"lines in the sand","peruvian skies" and "trial of tears" will be on the next album
that takes 53:30 minutes and he also said that it will be four more songs

The same EXACT thing happened to me about an hour ago....
except for the fact the all there was was the APSoG album
and nothing else.....Fates did have its own bookmark
            thingy though.........

First impressions....people shouldn't look at it
automatically as one song.....just sit and
take it in.....maybe it'll come together later ....

Anyway, parts II and 3 don't do anything for me,
part 4 and 5 (which I'm at right now), are FUCKED!
Zonder is driving me nuts right now.....very cool
stuff......only less than halfway throught but
            its definitely starting to build.....

I can already tell its not going to be like ACoS, but
I can tell I will enjoy this a lot...

Lemur Voice does this to me. I love their album, but there are things I like better. Still, when I find myself humming or just having random riffs going through my head, they are ALWAYS little snippets of L.V. Why? I have no idea. Quoth 2486...And now on the use of the Gustav Holst Mars riff at the beginning of DWT (the epic piece on the CD). Yes I still think it's there; It's quite distinct. And the 'tage song that uses the same riff is 'Prelude to Madness' on HMK. That 'tage Riff is a classical song by composer Greig, (died in 1908 or something). "Hall of the Mountain King" is the name of it, but 'tage renamed it and gave the subsequent song this title.

Reply...Sorry to rip you on this one, but 'tage DOES use the Gustav Holst Mars riff at the beginning of PtM. The main part of PtM is, however, Grieg's HMK, which is also the title of the following song on HMK.

Grieg's HMK is actually part of his larger 'Peer Gynt' (sp?) composition (opera, I believe?). Rick Wakeman also uses the famous HMK riff on his 'Journey to the Centre of the Earth'. I've also heard the Mars riff in a Metallica piece, but I can't remember which one (on one of the live CDs?).

I'm a fairly well trained layman when it comes to classical music, so it'd hard to get this one by me!

I wanna complain about poor planning for the Ozzfest in Detroit. They sheduled this show at Pine Knob, which I have only been to once, but if memory serves correctly, they can fit about 6K people there. Last year I saw Ozzy alone in Kalamazoo last year, and he sold out the show with about 8K people. Ozzfest is a much bigger event, and it is in a much larger area population-wise, and it gets an even smaller venue. WTF? I woke up early last Saturday so I could tickets. I went to Hudson's because I figured that were wouldn't be as many people there as there would be at Harmony House, and there were only 5 people in front of me. The stupid girl who was running the ticket computer didn't know how to run the damned thing, and by the time she got some help the whole fucking pavilion was sold out. Only lawn was left. I haven't been so pissed in a long time. Same fucking day I was only able to get lawn for the Rush show. So now I'm gonna wait until next Saturday when Chicago tickets go on sale for the Ozzfest. I think it's called the New World Music Theater or something like that. Does anyone know how big this place is? I hope bigger than Pine Knob. Seated shows suck. The best shows are always general admission.

How else is CiaW different from CiA9TG? Someone said it was slower. Does it have the same lyrics? Does it really have an industrial influence? Just curious.

I'm thinking about going to the Steve Morse show at St. Andrew's. Backstage would kick ass. Later

So, I got down to Vibes, the CD shop in Burlington. (Yeah, singular.) Ran to the metal section. No Fates section. Shit, where did it go? So, I asked the counter person, and she found it for me in the hardcore section. Whatever.

I went up to the counter to pay, and said to a different counter person, "You know, this isn't hardcore." He said, "Oh, believe me, I know. I don't know why it was there." I was shocked. "You know Fates?" "Shit yeah. I've had a copy of this for a while now. Love it." I said to him, "You know, I was in here last week to ask if you guys would be carrying this, and no one here knew, or had even heard of Fates." "Doesn't surprise me," he said, with a touch of sadness, and went to turn down the techno-crap that was playing. As I left the store, counter person #1 turned it up again.

So, ok, part IV kicked my skull in. That's amazing shit. Part IX just started. Part XIII sounds incredible - KevMo's at the top of his game. I'm going to listen to this non-stop, probably.

For those of you that haven't heard this yet, and are deciding whether to get it, there are quite a few parts of this that remind me of "Inside Out" (the only other Alder disc I have). This is beautiful stuff. Dark, but beautiful. Joey V kicks ass on the fretless.

The lyrics are intense. "walked alone last night/cold streets of could be anywhere" It doesn't get a whole lot better than this.

OK, later. I gotta go ingest this. -d

    Brian-

I agree about Inside Out, in fact I think it completely sucks. My personal favorite of theirs is "Awaken the Guardian". "Spectre Within" also kicks ass. "No Exit" and "Perfect Symmetry" are pretty good - a lot more progressive and less metal-ish then their earlier efforts. I think that I am personally prejudiced against Ray Alder (the singer) 'cause he and I are from the same city (San Antonio), and I remember him from this cheezy local band before he got picked up by Fate's. I guess that's a dumb attitude for me to take - oh well.

    Greetings ye 'jamanoids...

Attempting to find the new Fates Warning today, I got the following reactions/answers:

Blockbuster Music #1: "Sorry, it looks like we didn't order any copies of that." Blockbuster Music #2: "Fates Who?" (after explaining, and spelling, the band name): "Hm. No, I don't show any copies in inventory. Sorry." Camelot Music: "I don't think we'll have that in till the end of the month. You sure today was the release date?" Sam Goody Music: "Never heard of them." (when pressed) "Let me check...*clickety, clickety* We have 'Chasing Time' and 'Parallels.' No 'Pleasant Shade of Gray.' "

Finally went to Best Buy (the farthest away from my house). Looked in the "New Music" section; nothing there. Looked on the "New Releases" board; no mention of FW. Looked in the Rock section -- ONE copy of "Chasing Time." Nothing else.

Getting angry now, I look on the cart I see with tons of new stuff that needs to be shelved. On the bottom shelf, alongside thirty-odd copies of Beck's "Odelay", I see *two* copies of "Pleasant Shade of Gray."

I take it to the counter, and they can't ring it up at first because it hasn't even been entered into the computer yet. (It was 12.00 noon when I went in).

What does it take to get people to recognize prog music as a viable alternative to alternative???? Everywhere I go, everyone I talk to, no one knows what I'm talking about when I mention Lemur Voice, Magellan, Symphony X, Dream Theater, Fates Warning, Nevermore, Angra, Glass Hammer -- the list goes on and on and on. What can we do to get music stores and music resources to pay attention to prog?

    Grrr....

Sorry, just got a *teensy* bit frustrated after crisscrossing town looking for one lousy CD. Not that it's lousy -- "Pleasant Shade of Gray" is an excellent disc, from the three or four listens I've given it so far. What's the deal with that damned alarm clock at the end of the disc, though? Very teeth-jarring....

    Cheers, Phil

The last time I saw them, they played 2 sets of Metallica stuff and then 3 or 4 original tunes. The original stuff was pretty ballsy.
