very industrial. in fact, the reworked song originated from derek fookin
around with industrial drum patches on his korg. i like it more than the
    original, personally. =)

but john arch, now there's one cool guy :) j/k =)

but seriously, what about james labrie in winter rose? that was more cheese
than most cows can make all year (and i KNOW my cow facts ;) Charlie
dominici on the other hand, was never in any cheesy bands i know of.
Charlie and John Arch also hold somewhat the same vocal styling (though i
like charlie more) DT and FW kind of have the same vocalist bloodlines i
    guess :)

    > What can we do to get music stores and music
    >resources to pay attention to prog?

get more listeners to spend their money on them. the reason stores dont
want to carry prog is because people dont want to listen to prog (or maybe
not that they dont want to, just that they've never heard it) I'd think
stores would at least order ONE copy of a new album, granted.. but if they
dont think they're going to make any sales, i can reason with them not
ordering it. I personally dont view the new fates any different (as in
"better" or "worse") than the new soundgarden, but the problem that arises
is they arent given the opprotunity of equality to the general public.
Stores are gonna order 500 copies of Down On the Upside and 1/2 a copy of
APsoG (ok, maybe a full one:) and in turn no one is ever going to hear about
APsoG because most likely a fan or two will come in and sell out their stock
rather quickly, while the 500 copies of DotU continue to sell, but also
    continue to catch peoples' eye.

Therefore, i propose we get all 1000 of us together, get some artillery,
masks, grenades, and go down to mtv studios and take the place over for as
long as we can hold it out. we'll all bring our best videos that mtv
aholics never see and give their skull a little drill-work and open their
minds. after this we'll all go to jail, but i bet we'd sure as hell make
the news, and the music we fought for would be in the papers for quite a
while. just think about it :)

I went to Best Buy at about 3:00. About eight copies of APSoG. + some
inside out, Night on Brocklin, and Parallels. WOW. fairly impressed with
the selection here. However, As I was driving to my next stop, I opened The
CD and it fell in my lap. The inner plastic circle was in shatters. Took it
back, and the replaced one was the same way. Anybody have this problem?
Maybe the box of 'em were dropped.

Haven't heard it yet. Gotta go away for a few hours and the player in my
    car is broke.

Also picked up DT's WDaDU. They had four copies of this (and the Silent Man
single.) This is the fourth time in seven years I've bought this one. If I
lose it this time, I give up. But this one's on CD so I might have better
    luck.

    Hey there.

Today is the day that many of us have long waited for. The new fates cd!
    As such:

    last night:
Blockbuster#1 "yeah, we're getting that tomorrow."
Blockbuster#2: "oh yeah we'll have some tomorrow."

    Cool, I thought.

    This morning.

On the way to school I make a stop to Blockbuster to pick it up.
"huh? No, we got two on order but they won't be in for a few more
    weeks."
    GRRRRRRRRRR....
So I decide to stop by another shop on campus that usually gets cool
things in on release dates (Nevermore, Lemur Voice).
    "Baits what?"
    "Fates Warning. With an F."
"Oh...no there's nothing here about a new disc."
    GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR.....

So I head off to classes disappointed and anxiously awaiting getting the
    funk out of there.
Finally, classes are over. I head down to this other CD place that
always gets stuff in on release dates. The dude there tells me he
thinks it got delayed for another week!
    GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWLLLLLL!!!!!!!!!!!!
Disappointed, still I move on. I use my cynical nature to disbelieve
this dude and stop by Blockbuster #2 on the way home. There I see my
brother. He tells me he saw the new fates at the store in the mall.
    YES!

I head down to the mall and see it!
    YES!!!

more gripes and praises coming soon....

For those asking what this song is like, and how it differs from the
    original CiaW, here you go.

It starts off with the opening riff, only about 1/4 or so the original
tempo, maybe even slower. It's hard to tell what it is, but for some
reason it sounds familiar. The drums are going along with the riff, and
you start to pick up some sort of industrial sounding drum sounds... very
metalic. After a bit, this clean guitar riff comes in, very neat - I
can't tell if this is in the original or if it's new, but it's damn cool.

James comes in, singing the first verse a lot slower than usual and
pausing where there weren't pauses before. On first listen you can't even
tell what song it is until he's sung a few lines... and even then you have
    trouble believing it.

The prechorus kicks in followed by the chorus, and you can tell what song
it is by this point, because even though it's slower, James still sings is
    the same.

Then after the second chorus is the part of the song that in my opinion
just kicks ass. There's a slight break, and you hear Mike hit the sticks
together quickly, preping the band for an abrupt increase in tempo. The
return to the songs original speed for the instrumental section, but this
time around, the band is playing off one another, with the bass, keys, and
guitar taking turns soloing on the riff while Mike comes in between them.

After the instrumental section, the song slows back down again, and
continues that way until the end. All in all, it's a very cool song, and
the instrumental section sounds great. If there's still time to order The
Darkest of Winters from Mike Bahr, DO IT, you don't be dissappointed!*

*no normal person has ever been dissapointed with a Mike Bahr Production.
If you are disspointed, you are abnormal, and statements such as "You
won't be dissapointed" do not apply to you.

I hate (*really* hate, actually) to say this, BUT I am afraid that I
    know
the answer to your question and it does not involve any tricky
    mathematics.

Can you say snip-snip-snip ?? Songs like Lines in the Sand may (now)
be over ten minutes but if you cut out those "long boring" instrumental
parts, it could become a nice concise 5 minute song. Uuuugggghhhh.

Remember, I am not sure that this guy has had experience with
producing bands like DT who can write songs longer than 4-5 minutes.
I like Aerosmith, for what they are, just as much as the next person
but they are so different than DT. My vote is that since they have
developed these songs over quite some time and they seem mature
that they self produce the CD and use the money that they were about
to waste on a producer to let them sleep in their own hotel rooms when
    they tour.

Apologies for making a current events post but...

Has anyone checked out the coverage today's events in Peru have gotten
on CNN's website? All that's being reported is that shots were fired,
explosions were heard, and apparently some of the hostages have been
rescued. Then the article immediately jumps into a discussion about
turmoil in the Peruvian Cabinet this week. What about the rebels? What
about the hostages? Did anybody get hurt? Killed? I'm sure we'll hear
about it eventually, but I'm telling you, check out www.cnn.com right
now - the coverage smacks of Orwellian censorship.

You know, some of us complain a lot that we have to pay high prices for imports, but domestic CDs are getting pretty dang expensive. New Fates was $17.99(plus tax!) FUNK! (not that I mind paying that for a Fates CD but still that seems like an awful high price to pay.) The prices are constantly going up! A high price used to be, what, $15.99 for a cd? GRRR.

Wow. I'm griping about prices now. Weird. Yeah, yeah, yeah I know the story "they charge what you'll pay."

Chickens are cool- stupid but cool so I'll add my chicken story...

There was this chicken who lived on the streets so it never appealed to him to cross the damn thing. He was a rock star who took large amounts of drugs and made all the other chickens rant and rave about how good he was. He gets frustrated, ends up in a chicken church, starts to believe in the almighty chicken god. Finally, one day he sees a chicken lying in the gutter and decides this isn't the life I want and decides to change his ways. Damn it, I can't do this, its DT Chicken from the Savatage album Streets. Someone else can pick up on this and make one cuz I'm just not creative enough.

Stabbing Westward are a good band but the only songs I could get anything out of were "Shame" and "I Don't Believe"...oh, and of course, my absolute favorite "What Do I Have To Do" (killer song)

Queensryche is coming to my town (Darien, NY)..at least this is what I heard and if its true, you can bet your ass I'll be there providing tickets don't sell out. YES, I am excited!!!!!!!!

About Fates Warning, I never cared for anything with Ray Alder except Eye To Eye. I was never a big fan of John Arch either but I own a couple of their old CD's. I got to say, when John wants to sing, this man can belt out a classic but unfortunately, only certain songs live up to my expectations (Soldier Boy, Guardian, The Apparition) and the best I ever heard him sing was on "Damnation". As for the Scenes From A Memory disc (Only A Matter Of Time)...damn, when I first got that CD, I got the biggest headache off that song although its still a classic to hear.

    Sorry for the long post.

The finale to a now cluttered jam.

After griping about all it took to get the new Fates, I think I should put this in:

IT WAS ALL WORTH IT! MAN THIS FUNKER ROCKS! And I've only heard it once! It scared me at first with the industrial stuff but then it was back to good ol' prog metal. After hearing SO many style changes by SO many people this year, it was refreshing to hear a band stick to their roots and continue to add depth to it. A truly superb disc. I'm not the best at reviewing and I know a lot of reviews will come so I'll leave you with this: BUY IT!

later ( and sorry for cluttering up the jam with a record THREE posts in one day!) Phillip Cool cd of the YEAR: Fates Warning "A Pleasant Shade of Grey"

I just found out some startling news. Mike Bahr is scamming us all... this band that he's selling cds from is not DT! It's called Majesty (wait till the other band Majesty finds out) and it's all DT cover songs! So send your Acoustic Dreams, Antiquities, Subconscious, and anything else to me as evidence. I'm building a case here.

    > I wanna complain about poor planning for the Ozzfest in Detroit.

And we really really really do want to listen to you complaining about it. J/K. I have pity for anyone that deals with that for concert tix... but then, I paid something like $45 a ticket for my scalped general admission G3 tix... so I don't feel TOO bad for you.

    > Chicago tickets go on sale for the Ozzfest. I think it's called the > New World Music Theater or something like that. Does anyone know how > big this place is?

It's in Tinley Park, right by me. Fucking HUGE. But I don't think it's the size that's the problem here... it's your luck. You'd better buy your tickets early, and bring a rabbit's foot. :)

    > The best shows are always general admission.

Amen > The Digital Man... Is a bastard. I can't find the cd anywhere in Chicago!

    > I agree about Inside Out, in fact I think it completely sucks.

Okay. Let me balance this by saying I think it's PHENOMENAL. Fates is my favorite band, and Alder is my favorite vocalist. Inside Out is IMO, better than Awake. Just wanted to weigh in against your opinion. :) No offense... I totally respect you hating the album.

    > personal favorite of theirs is "Awaken the Guardian". "Spectre Within" > also kicks ass. "No Exit" and "Perfect Symmetry" are pretty good - a > lot more progressive and less metal-ish then their earlier efforts.

Well... I agree with the "More Progressive" part, but I think No Exit is the most "metal-ish" of all Fates stuff. Very 80's, and it would kick ass if it could be re-mastered. I recommend buying Parallels first, and if you think it's too light, get No Exit. I'd recommend the new album, if I'd heard it yet!

    > think that I am personally prejudiced against Ray Alder (the singer) > 'cause he and I are from the same city (San Antonio), and I remember him > from this cheezy local band before he got picked up by Fate's.

That sucks dude. He has a great voice!

Everyone keeps creaming about this band called Fates Warning. Who are these people? Are they like Dream Theater or something? I've never even heard of this band. Are they hard? Like metal?

Even though I have only herd the disc once through I slap the name a "classic" and a "Masterpiece". I am SSOO pumped up about it! I love how dark it is!! I would have to say it goes along with some of the best CD's ever like with Awake, I&W and the masterpiece ACoS.
