One riff in Track 4 resembles one from Take the Time. The one before John's
solo. Think this was intentional? I mean It's not the keys, and Kev didn't
    write the song anyway.

    Hey guys,

Just thought I'd add some more used CD's to the list I want to trade for
any cool prog, ie: Steve Morse, Marty Friedman, recent King Crimson, Kenny
Wayne Shepard, Spock's Beard, misc. DT stuff, or any other similar stuff.
BTW, I like most guitar wankers, except the Yngwie rip-offs:)

    Savatage--"Dead Winter Dead"

    Shawn Lane--"Powers of Ten"

King Crimson--"Thrak Attack" (live CD of improvs w/poster).

    King's X--"Faith Hope Love"

    Majesty--"Acoustic Dreams" (JUST KIDDING:)

This will probably be the last post I make about this, because I'd like to
keep this excess bandwidth off the jam, so e-mail me privately if you're
    interested.
    Later guys!

So, for whatever reason, I was unable to pick up the new Fates... All
right, my mom wouldn't let me borrow the car. <sniffle> You happy now?!
Go ahead, laugh at the baby, I don't care... I can take it... <bawl>

All righty, <knuckles cracking>, the points of this message are twofold.
Two points, that is, as in bipointary... Poor Oblieo, banished to the
Pointless Forest, only because he was different (no point), and with no one
to keep him company, but his pointed dog, Arrow. "Me and my Arrow, doo dee
doo dee dooty-doo-doo-doo, straighter than narrow, doo dee doo dee
dooty-doo-doo-doo, wherever he goes, everyone knows, just me and my
    Arrow..." Yah, ubertangent!

I've been talking a lot with this one kid in school a lot lately, and I
found out he had a lot of instruments for sale. Apparently, one of his
friends' roomates left in a hurry for whatever reason, and left a drumkit, a
guitar, a keyboard, and some other goodies behind. Pat, the kid I referred
to in the first sentence of this pseudoparagraph, then bought them off the
nameless friend for a horribly minimal sum of money. $60 for the entire
drumkit! Anyhow, now he's got them for sale, and, being a keyboardist, I
was curious to see what it was he was trying to get rid of. I asked for
some specs, and this is the message he delivered today on a quarter sheet of
    notebook paper (fringeless):

    "Yamaha Portasound PSS-540
    multi-programable Keyboard
    <scribble> PCM rythem/stereo"

His spelling errors, not mine... Does anyone know anything about this
'board? Would it be worth a few hundred dollars, while I continue to save
for a bigass Kurzweil or Korg? Better yet, what would be a good price to
offer him? I don't think he has any idea of its retail value. Private
E-mail would probably be the best option here. Thanks in advance to any
    "helpers"...

Ah, we've reached the second point. I finally made up my mind on a college,
acceptance papers sent in today. University of Maryland (College Park) won
out. Any 'Jammers in the area looking for a fairly decent keyboardist come
    autumn? <grin>

Aye, that be it, laddies. Quiz tomorrow, and no lining up at the door.

I think it's selling a heckuva lot more than the stores anticipated. (How
    could they, "Fates Who?")
I had to return mine ONE HOUR afterwards because of some broken plastic and
when I went over to get another, the other SIX copies I had previously seen
were gone. I got the last one.

Just didn't make the cut, I guess...I read somewhere (on this list, I
think) that Kevin was kinda miffed that it didn't get on the album. He
also wasn't too crazy about the fact that the samples had been left out

I agree. Folks, seems to me a CD like this is kinda rare and I think it
would "behoove" (hehehe) us all to show some interest in this particular
release and to make this interest obvious to others (e.g. record
companies) by spending some cash on it.

Herb is just a tough act to follow. I'm not saying his drumming is
technically super-difficult or anything, he's just got a very distinctive
(to me) style that identifies HIM as being the drummer. That, combined
with the chops he used to show on the albums makes him a special
drummer in my book and I don't think it will be easy to replace him.

Well, I marched into my local STRAWBERRIES music store today looking for
the new Fates...and to my suprise the guy behind the counter ACTUALLY
KNEW WHAT THE HELL I WAS TALKING ABOUT! But he said that it "wasn't
on the morning shipment" and would be coming in on the "afternoon
truck".... So I went to work, and after 9pm I stopped back only to find
out that THEY ONLY GOT ONE..REPEAT ONE...COPY OF aPsoG in for the
ENTIRE STORE! That is so pathetic..one copy of that, and 400 copies
of the new Spice Girls... What is this world coming to!!! Anyways its
great to hear all these great reviews..I'm pretty psyched myself to
    hear it myself!

    Next Order of business --

I received my WINTER ROSE CD today from a place called
Terrible Ted's Imports out of Michigan:
    Their homepage is at: http://members.aol.com/terteds/terrible_teds.htm
    email is TerTeds@aol.com
So the CD is an import..ONLY released in Japan..Cost me $32.99 + shipping..
but BOY WAS IT WORTH IT! For those of you who love 80's metal/rock
this is a fantastic piece of work....And now without further adieu, I
reprint (without permission of course :) ) the liner notes from inside:

      JAMES LABRIE
"Hey people, here it is. I can't believe it's over 8 years since Rich
and I recorded this material. The band was Winter Rose and without
going into detail we came so close to getting signed but it didn't
come to fruition. It must of been our Creator's master plan,
otherwise I wouldn't be in the greatest band in the world today,
Dream Theater (said with the slightest hint of modesty)
Well on the subject of DT. I would like to say a few words to the
beloved DT fans. Our decision to release this material was based on
the fantastic number of fans who had copies of WR in its rawest form.
As tribute to your dedication, we cleaned things up a bit and remixed
this material for you. Stylistically, it is not DT. --not even close.
It is a completly different side of me and another form of expression.
Let us not forget that this is the same music that blew the other DT
members away and helped to place me as vocalist, which I have proudly
been for the first 6 years of many more. Enough said; I hope you
            enjoy the music.
[part paying tribute to his bandmate Rich deleted]
To my beloved DT mates --John, Mike, Derek, and John: It's been
a great ride so far. This is only the beginning of our ascension to
the top of the world's biggest roller coaster.
[sentimental part about his wife deleted]
TO THE JAMMERS ON-LINE: KEEP JAMMIN'. TAKE CARE AND I HOPE YOU LIKE
             WHAT YOU HEAR!!
                -Cheers, James LaBrie...

Well, there ya have it! Personally, I like to think I have a 1/1,000,000 th
to do with getting this material rereleased. When I saw James on the
Awake tour I spoke with him about the WR live tapes I had..we discussed
the band, the members, and the music...Anyways, the track listing on this
CD has already been posted here, so I won't repeat it..I'll only say that
this is an excellent CD, and is as much a part of DT history as any
    other pre-I+W release...

Actually, I thought Sausage was the maiden incarnation of Primus. I saw
them open for Helmet and Rollins Band in the summer of 1994, and they were
incredibly tight and superior to the time I saw Primus open for Rush
during the Counterparts tour. I'd hope that Jay won't play differently
"in the context of Primus", and that he will bring his own style to SF's
"suckiest" band. It would be like Derek having to play Kevin's keyboard
parts note-for-note, with no room for interpretation or originality.

    Hey,

I checked out a free performance by Rob Eberhart Young (Or was it Ron?)
at Borders bookstore today. He's apparently playing at a bunch of
Borders around the country, so keep your eyes open for it. (Maybe at
Barnes & Noble too. . .) He described himself as "I used to be a metal guy, now I'm a new age guy". He repeatedly referred to Wil Ackerman (The
founder of Wyndham Hill and now Imaginary Road record labels) to having pulled him out of a "heavy metal garbage can". His music was pretty kuul,
it was just him on an acoustic-electric with delay and chorus, new-agey sounding, but with an edge and a straightforwardness to it that comes from
his metal background. His cd, Sticks And Stones, is worth checking out, especially those of you in Rick's Yanni/Tesh Fan Club. (He does some
duets with Michael Hedges and a few other people on it as well.)

    Party on,

    DJ Kuul A

Okay, y'all have my curiosity peaked with the talk of CIA9iTG. How can I get a
    copy of Darkest of Winters?

On another note, I'm going to get rid of Inside Out and pick up PSOG since
    everyone seems to love it.

On yet another note, I just finished removing my makeup after the KISS concert
(my ears are ringing like mad), and I can only say that this night has probably
been the most exciting night of my life. I'm not a HUGE fan, but these guys just
completely RULE in concert, period! And it was only $35 - there a whole lot of
concerts that are more expensive than that.

Tickets for Ozz Fest June 10 in St. Louis go on sale this Saturday
(April 26). No word on prices for this show, but I imagine it'll be
    comparable to the other dates.

    Hello all,
Man, I know I'm behind the times. I just saw "Crossroads" for the first
time tonight. Geez, did Vai ever suck? He was playing Bad Horsie's intro
riff in the movie. The whole movie was just ass-kicking. Tons of awesome
guitar stuff (I'm assuming from Vai himself) all throughout the movie, and
the end scene where Ralph Macchio (sp?) "beats" Vai is so damn cool. I'm
taping only that part of the movie. That scene is classic. If you haven't
seen this movie yet, go check it out. If you like Vai or just the shape of
the guitar in general, you'll love this movie. :)

Peace and love, and good happiness stuff, ~Vince
