I don't have the new Queensryche album. 'CAUSE I'M POOR.

I don't have the new Fates Warning album. 'CAUSE.

There once was a chicken who, upon seeing a great 8-lane highway of bustling traffic, scoffed aloud to his henhouse pals, "You call that a highway?" He then proceeded to cross the road with such blazing speed that for a brief second, all traffic stopped to gaze in wonder at this marvelous beast.

"Impossible," the other chickens whispered to one another, "no normal chicken could do such things..."

This chicken quickly became bored sitting on the far side of the road, so to pass the time, making sure to wait for a fleet of triple-trailer semis to clog up the 8 lanes of already busy traffic, darted across the highway once again without breaking a sweat.

Strutting up to the henhouse, he boasted to his henhouse pals, "As I said, this is all very rudimentary stuff. Are you sure this is supposed to be difficult?" He then proceeded to scratch with his beak in the dirt, drawing plans for a great 24-lane highway reserved only for the quickest of all birds, the roadrunner. "I'd design roads for chickens to cross, but they'd all get run over, so why bother?" he said.

And once again the rest of the chickens became uneasy with this one chicken's unnatural abilities. "He's not a chicken," they muttered, "or if he is...he must be in league with the farmer."

Unfortunately this chicken died the next day from a heap of troubles. All of his feathers fell out, his beak became brittle and cracked into a thousand pieces, and his legs ran away with themselves. The end.

Marillion - This Strange Engine This album is beautiful, especially the title track which is a stunning piece of progressive work. Mellow and tuneful and just pleasing to listen to.

Bruce Dickinson - Accident of Birth I've heard two songs from this so far (it's out on May 23rd in the UK) and they are great. I think this album will be his best solo album. Adrian Smith's guitar work is wonderful!

So you made it all the way to the end, now eh? I was listening to it for the first time and read a message about the clock when I was in part 10. The message referred to something about part eight so I thought I past it un-noticed. 10 minutes later it scared the shit outta me.

Well, once again the jam shows how difficult it is for some people to express dislike without turing into a giant throbbing penis.

Ray Alder can sing. I think he sings better than James Labrie, certainly in terms of enunciation. There's no dancing turtles on any fates CD since John Arch left, and any such species in those days are there because that's the actual lyrics that John wrote. He was inclined to such things, it seemed. ;)

Chris: I think he meant that YES hasn't done anything original since 1980 ??

Yes, it sounds like a 50 minute death march at times, yes, Ray can put quite a bit of emphasis on the lyrics (they deserve it!) rather than a strict melody that has nothing to do with the words, and yes, there are few to little fireworks, but that's what Fates _IS_ABOUT_ -- that's what they do. That's why they are my 2nd favorite group, for when I want moody, insightful and mature metal. No 16-year old virtuoso on amphetamines could write music with the emotional insight of any of Matheos' songs. Even though I prefer DT overall to Fates, much of "our friends from Long Island"'s music is technicality over emotionality (I think LtL is an amazing exception to this)

Yeah, so some people don't like it. I think women in veils are unattractive, but you won't find me wandering through the middle east shouting "Take it off, baby! You look ugly in those robes! What idiot thought of that?" -- yet that is what some people feel is their right on a mailing list when many others have expressed an opinion to the contrary of their own. Anyone who posts such obvious tomes of ire deserve what they get in response. I did it a while back (remember that one? oof) and while I was upset at the time (Sorry Chris P) and I still believe as I did, I realize that I was wrong to post what I did here, at least in the way that I did.

Everyone makes mistakes. Few can admit it. I shut up now.

This has certainly been an interested 24 hours!

I'm not going to go back into any arguments (this has been taken to private e-mail...finally), i've noticed something that makes me, well, not too happy.

If one doesn't agree with the norm, they are crushed.

I made a post, combating the many, many claims about how great this new album is. I bough the cd. I sat. i Listened. I commented.

One of the big problems I have with Adolf Hitler was his ability to crush the minorty. If someone didn't agree with, he bullied his way over things. The same type of mentallity happened here.

Most (and not all, mind you) of the responces were downright horrid. This is for a specific reason: People can't accept alternative points of view. This was clear on IRC last night, where i was put on the defensive time and time again for my dislike over 55 minutes of music.

Rather than accept the fact that i may not like the same things you are, i'm not in a (rather stupid) flame war with someone who decided not to read my post but to comment on it nonetheless.

"..quick to judge, quick to anger, slow to understand. ignorance and prejudice and fear walk hand in hand."

this "letter" is not for people to comment on, and i'd rather if you didn't. just think about it. i'm not saying this for any other reason than this: what kind of newsletter is the ytsejam without alternative points of view.

it takes a certain level of maturity to understand that i can respect your beliefs and still not agree with you. it's a trait that (i'm afraid) some members of this (not-so) esteemed orginazation don't have.

    > It's perfectly okay to dislike the new album. Subtlerage did it > before you did. But saying that there's no change, and the album is > repetitious is just plain incorrect. As well, saying that the band is > unoriginal (since 1980) is a falsehood.

actually, saying the above statements constitutes an opinion. i only showed my distaste for the band and music to the extent that i did because i didn't feel like getting into a flame war, and i knew that the fanatical FW fans would go apeshit if someone gave a dissenting opinion of it. and to be honest, it's not really that important. and hell, it already happened.

i definitely think you FW fans need to relax a little bit. i think Syrinx's post was honest; the intensity of his distaste for it was as high as your raving manic reviews of how it's the best thing in the world. if you build something up so high, and put it on such a high pedastal, you're nuts if you think someone's not going to agree, and perhaps even want to knock it down a bit...

it's all just opinions. lighten up.

right on. or how about when we saw 5 BILLION disliking posts of HItnF. it was like the other way around. i say: GO ON AND HATE IT! as long as its pushing the mainstream of a situation, i never seem to have a problem with it. now if i saw 5000 posts about people who hate it, then there'd be a different story. but hell, one guy dislikes it, i think its good for the floor.

when i first heard real audio samples prior to buying it, i thought it was gonna be a 54 minute snore. of course, my high points on the album are ray alder. i didnt get to hear much of that on the .ra files. the guy blows labrie away in my ears, he's fantastic. the rest of the music just swirls behind him. ~Rip

Hey, does anybody know where the DREAM THEATER discussion list is? I accidentally signed up to this one, and it's a random shotgun of shit I don't really give a rat's ass about (well, 'cept for Fates), all on account that I thought this was the Dream theater mailing list.

I know it's tuff to discuss a band when they're not currently putting anything out on the market, but don't I care what you "meant" to say in a post flaming some other guy for his musical tastes. I'm just addin' shit to the fire with this post myself, and while I understand TOTALLY (trust me, I got kicked off the Megadeth mailing list 'cuz I wrote one one liner email about Dream Theater instead of MD) that we're allowed to discuss related information here, I'm getting tired of finding 100 new messages a day of bull shit blah blah blah blah blah about not finding a new Fates CD in 57 different stores across the nation, or people stabbing punk fans or alternacrap fans in the back by calling them cock sucking morons like the elitist trend-followers I tend to have an aversion to.

With that out of the way...

could somebody email me a list o' cytes of where I could possibly find sound files of the new material? ('specially that pin ball game clip)

Sorry 'bout this whole post, but I can't get to sleep, and I really wanted to tonight. Direct any hostile flamers towards my address at eckie@asu.edu

Greetings friends, You know, it struck me why maybe there are so many damned flame wars here. I think at least half of the people who subscribe to this list are musicians themselves. We, the musicians, believe in whatever we believe in very strongly. It's part of the passion that allows us to make a statement to the public, our pets, our friends, or whoever takes the time to listen to us. Civility often gets overlooked in these passionate outcries. I'm not sure if that's beautiful, frustrating, or beautifully frustrating. Though there is a wide population of musicians here, each one of us is different, has different ways of saying things, and has different prefferences. No one should be knocked for an opinion. It's OK to try to convince them otherwise, but not be saying, "You're wrong and that's the end." Maybe, "I disagree, here's why, and you don't have to buy it, but there it is." I hope we can some day surmount differences. By the way, I'm starting to like Awake even better than all the other alboms. It's really grown on me. I like the rawness and the pure shred at parts. Be well. Matt B

Thank goodness for cool indie record stores! I went to my favorite mom & pop store on my lunch break yesterday, thinking to myself "I hope they've got the new Fates.. MAN, do I hope they've got the new Fates..." When I arrived, I was greeted by a spiffy promo copy for 4 bucks! Nice. And yes, I *will* be purchasing the official release, lest I be Ytse-slagged for depriving the band of their due royalties, but I simply couldn't resist the promo for now.

As for APSoG: wowie zowie zip a dee doo dah!!! There's all sorts of amazing shit in there which will take many, many listens to digest - everything from big-time Floydian influences to a riff which reminds me of Black Flag's "Sinking" (anybody know what I'm talking about?). This puppy along with Brian Wherry's demo will keep me OH so very happy until we're blessed with new DT! Boo-ya!

    Asleep, yet so afraid...

P.S. - Any bands/musicians interested in having their material reviewed in my upcoming e-zine, get your ass over to http://www.grinmedia.com/zeeen and find out where to send your stuff. P.P.S. - WHEN is DT gonna cover "Bat Out of Hell"??? This must happen before I die, do you understand me!!! :)

Ok, Ostrich and Gordon have given their opionion. Obviously they are just posting to start a flame war with the rest of the jam. They could have just said they didn't like it in a civilized manner (like a couple of jammers did) but to say it like the way these two did, they just deserve no respect from anyone.
