    Jams,
All this talk about not being able to find the new Fates... Got
mine Tuesday at 11:35 at Media Play. They didn't yet have it on the
rack but it was in a stack on the counter waiting to be put away.

I asked the geek chick (orange hair and flannel) about it, got
stared at like I was an alien as she walked away to straighten Spice
    Girls...

That's when I decided to look on the table in the back and that's
where 8 copies were stacked and stickered. Grabbed one, went to the
checkout and they said they couldn't sell it yet cuz it didn't have
an anti-theft attachment to it! So I took it back, grabbed Michael
Weiland's sister, and asked her to put one of these things on it. She
reluctantly did and I got to tour the damn place one more time. All
this so the other geek could take the plastic off and run it over the
    scanner.

Does this sound intelligent to anybody or do thieves naturally
alert the check stand they're about to steal something on their way
out or what? I don't understand their paranoia.

As far as ranking it with the other Fates, I'll have to wait cuz I
need more time on it. I can say I like it and did so right away, but
    how much I don't know

I noticed last week that #59 PT had been received. Mine's #60 and
haven't gotten it yet. Those that haven't already posted that they
got theirs yet, could you let us know where we are with this? I don't
want to bug Mike about it yet because who says mine's been shipped
    yet?

       Wilmo
Waiting (im)patiently for the new DT in whatever form or length
    distributed

I still think that Brad Gillis' is funnier: Ozzy, Night Ranger, and a solo
album with the likes of Derek S, Gregg Allman, and Carmine Appice, to name
a few (and that's all on *one* disc!).

BTW, those of you that don't own Gilrock Ranch (the aforementioned solo
album) ought to. Not like I've been listening to anything but APSoG
lately, but it's still a neato disc.

Good to see you like this now. I think it has some of their most
masterfully creative works. I mean, the hooks had me on it for six months
non-stop - of course, I didn't start REALLY listening to this one until
last year myself. So those of you who never liked Hold Your Fire that much,
go dig it out and hear it again.

Well, so far no one's done much to explain why Queensryche's music is of the same caliber as DT's. Look - I'm not trying to convince anyone that they suck - I'm trying to get someone who knows their new material to explain to me the subtleties of it that I am apparently missing.

Here are the responses to date:

in Jam#2498 The Digital Man said: > >You're missing the fact that everyone likes different stuff.

I agree - that's why I asked for someone who likes something "different" than I do to explain their perception of it to me.

in Jam#2500 rickbond said: > >Put away the hairspray and make-up...they did. ;)

What does this have to do with music???

Maybe my tone was caustic in my original post, but that's no reason to get defensive. I tried to make it clear that I really used to like them, and would like to understand their newer stuff. Maybe you're thinking - "Well go buy it and listen to it, asshole!" Ok, that's fine - but I'd appreciate a slightly more cerebral incentive.

And look - here's another jam member who seems to have an opinion somewhat similar to mine.

in Jam#2500 Lars Hellsten said: > >Oh, I did get the new Queensryche, and a couple of songs were really bad, >as I expected, but there are a couple of good songs (my favourite after a >few listens is definately "You"). But I do think the album is a regression >from their previous albums, and it certainly won't be getting rotation in >my CD player the way all their other albums are. > >I can understand them writing 3 or 4 songs like this (I would love that), >but filling up an entire album with them? What the fuck's up with that? A >couple of the songs (Get a Life, etc.) are just terrible. After all the >reviews I've read here, it was a little better than I expected. Still >sounds like grunge though, I hear a lot of Stone Temple Pilots, >Soundgarden, Nirvana, and Pearl Jam in some of the songs. Fuck. I can't >believe I'm actually mentioning those bands in the same breath as Queensryche.

ok, here is my interp. on it..........Basically, I think the lack of responses (and the actual responses) comes from what you had said....let me explain...(wish me luck)

you're basic take on the situation was that you enjoyed the old QR (Rage for Order, Warning, etc.) much more than the O:M to present. I *think* that a lot of people on the 'Jam think the opposite, where O:M and Empire were more of the favorites. Not that there's a hatred of the older albums, but I think that that's where the basis of their semi-"proggy" status arises...

The hair reference deals with the fact that the older albums (first 3 or so) were more along the lines of metal....

Anyway, Queensryche seems to be a band that a majority of the people on here enjoy - if you don't consider them prog, which I kinda don't, then that's fine....some people wouldn't consider I Mother Earth prog either.....I think where QR relates with DT is more along the lines of musicianship rather than style of music. Both bands have an incredible emotional (and I don't mean crying) impact when you listen to their music. Unfortunately, that isn't there (for me) anymore with the new album, nor is it there for me in the older songs.......

I hope that clears some stuff up for ya...........

    -Al

p.s. - by the way, IME's singer leaving SUCKS, I thought that he was an integral part in their sound (not writing-wise, but perofrmnace-wise.....hopefully, they'll be able to get someone of the same caliber (hey, David Lee Roth is still available......

On what do you base this statement? I know plenty of people who love Dream Theater and the Sex Pistols. Personally, I go through phases. One month it's all DT and progressive edged bands, and the next month, I won't touch them - instead listening to the Wildhearts and Honeycrack. If anyone has seen my bootlist, it contains about 40 Dream Theater items, but 90% of the remaining 500 items are 80's metal (Kix, Vain, Spread Eagle). Dream Theater can surely move me, but there are times when I need 'Nothin But a Good Time' to pull my spirits up.

In regards to Queensryche's new album, someone said:

    >Put away the hairspray and make-up...they did. ;)

What an immature remark. I'm not going to try to pretend that hairspray and makeup have anything to do with making music, but Queensryche is obviously in a slump with their last 2.5 efforts, so who's to say that maybe a little makeup and hairspray wouldn't help them. I sure miss kick ass albums like O:M, The Warning, and Rage for Order. Michael Wilton should start writing again. For now, I'm not going to waste my money on new album. I'll wait to get it used for $1.

OK, this is way off topic, but I thought I'd ask here before trying elsewhere since I know there are some Pittsburgh Penguin fans out there... Are there any hockey fans out there who taped last night's (4/23) game? I'd really like to get a copy of it -- it was one of those rare moments (especially if you're a Penguins fan) that comes along only a few times, and I'd like to be able to see it again. (spoiler if you're saving it to watch) I was watching it and Mario Lemieux's goal was right out of a movie script:

The Penguins are winning the game 3 to 1 and are out-playing the Flyers, but everyone knows it may be Mario Lemieux's last game ever at home in Pittsburgh, since they'll have a hard time beating the Flyers on their home ice. With a few minutes left, the fans start chanting "MARIO" and holding up their signs in appreciation for everything he'd given to the Penguins and Pittsburgh. Mario had missed some chances to score earlier, but no one cares -- they're just happy to be able to see him one last time. With 2 minutes left, the crowd is now on their feet, clapping and still chanting MARIO. Then, with 64 seconds remaining in possibly his last game ever in Pittsburgh, Lemieux tips a Flyers' pass as they come into the Penguins' zone. Ian Moran gets to the puck first and he passes it back to Lemieux who takes off with it, a Flyer right behind him. As they race down the ice, my wife and I are on the edge of our seat and I'm thinking "My god, this is it!". Lemieux somehow manages to stay a step ahead of the Flyer as he closes in on the goal. Suddenly, he makes a classic Mario move faking the goalie almost off his feet and sinks it, right between the goalie's legs. My wife and I are screaming along with the crowd -- what a moment. The crowd threw hats and cheered for at least 10 minutes. Mario had performed his magic once again. The crowd wouldn't quiet down even after he skated to the center and waved. Now, I certainly want the Penguins to win the series, but if they don't... what a way to end a career. He's the amazing one. Thanks Mario.

I don't know why I didn't think to tape it, but if anyone has the game, I'd really like to get a copy. That moment kind of reminded me of when Cal Ripken beat the consecutive games record -- both Cal and Mario had played the same city for so long and are such nice people that everyone loved them and were able to share the moment. Sorry for interrupting the DT content. Thanks for any help!!

"It was just appreciation for everything I've gone through over the years in Pittsburgh," Lemieux said. "The fans have been there for me through a lot of tough times here in Pittsburgh. You never know what can happen in Philly, so I was just expressing my feelings toward the crowd and how I feel about them.

"It was just a great moment. When I came off, I started crying. It's the first time in my career that I did that. It was very emotional."

-- Steve Chew - schew@tis.com - http://www.clark.net/pub/iz/home.html Speaking about Mario Lemieux: Snow summed up the reaction of a generation of NHL goalies when he said, "Every time he comes down, it's, 'Oh my god, it's him.'"
