interesting name for a band, corey (i think)
that reminds me....for anyone reading this before 12 PM saturday the 5th
of April, you're all welcome down to the Diag on the University of
Michigan campus in Ann Arbor, MI for little party they like to call the
Hash Bash.......I'm going to be far, far away, but y'all are still
    welcome.....

that bit of news aside.....couple more thoughts on new QR
    1) how come the cassette lines sez copyright 1996? Is that on the CD
    liner as well?
    2) About the song "Get a life": on r.m.a.q. there's some talk about some
huge fan club debacle, overzealous fans or something......dunno about
that, I thought they were talking about tabloids, and tabloid TV, folks
like Geraldo......especially with that camera click/exposure noise at the
end.....i figured they were doing a two song, antimedia rant with
"cuckoo's nest" and "get a life"

oh, and did i mention that I saw 2001 on a huge screen, in full 70 mm
glory (whatever that means) earlier this week, and I just got done seeing
Blues Brothers on a big screen as well? I'd say that's a pretty damn fine
week of movies (big screen), wouldn't you agree?

I agree with this. The exact lyric is "The grass is green and then you tell me it's
red. Keep your thoughts and ideas locked inside your head." I don't know. I know they
can write better lyrics than that. (Though the music is stellar as always.) As for the
"Shit" part, it sounded to me as if it was thrown in just to raise eyebrows.

Just saw Geoff Tate on PI. I was a little disappointed that he didn't
say much. In fact he only said one thing throughout. That sounds like
something I would do - sit back and observe. Still pretty cool
though...I guess. It's really the first time I've seen any member of a
band I listen to except in a video or something. So maybe I've been
given insights into his character. Anyway, I wonder if he'll be inspired
to write something after this experience. Do you think JLB will make any
appearance like this after the new album? :)

I can't believe I wasted a half hour of my life waiting to glean some
pearl of wisdom from the step-uncle of grunge. Except for one off-topic
comment about e-coli-tainted beef in Seattle, Geoff Tate sat in apparent
bewilderment and disillusionment at host Bill Maher and his fellow
panelists. The topics of conversation were obviously way over Geoff's
head, because he didn't even respond facially to anything. He looked
baked and bored, and that's kinda how I felt after enduring this show.

The high note of the broadcast: Tonight's PI poll (conducted among
audience members) asked which would you rather attend: Opera received 33%
of the vote, and Headbanger's Ball received 67%. Maybe someone at MTV was
watching and said to himself, "Hey, we used to have a show by that
    name..."

I am far from musical and basically have ignored the time sig. debate, but
for those that have the Portnoy Instructional video, doesn't he explain his
parts on Surrounded? And doesn't he say they are 5/4? I know he talks about
his thoughts on at some point. Perhaps he is playing one sig and the band
another? Perhaps that could settle the debate. Take the time.

    To: ytsejam@ax.com
    Subject: Kevin's motivations
    Message-ID: <199704050714.XAA16139@ichips.intel.com>

    Someone said about Kevin:

    >But there's a certain magic to Images and Words that I really missed.
    >Until I heard the new Fates, that is.

Could some kind souls out there that have heard the new Fates album
elaborate on this a bit? I kind of freaked when I heard that Kevin's
work on the new Fates album reminded people of I&W, especially when
everybody had been led to believe he wasn't interested in that type
    of music anymore.

The reason I'm curious about this is because I've entertained a pet
theory off and on for a while now about Kev's true motivation. Whenever
I take a step back and look at all of Dream Theater's albums as a whole,
I see a pattern emerge. At one end of the spectrum we have WDADU,
which is the most "proggy" of their released albums. At the other end
of the spectrum we have Awake, which is the heaviest of their albums
(it certainly contains some complex prog elements, but there are far
more straightforward song elements and places where JP simply cranks
up the 7-string and lets the balls and chunks fly). Then we have I&W,
which I think lies in about the middle, and combined progressive and
metal in such a way that I don't think will ever be matched again.

Granted, this isn't very wide of a spectrum, and I'm not saying that
WDADU isn't heavy or that Awake isn't proggy, but when I listen to
the enormous influence that Kevin had on WDADU, and then the greatly
reduced influence he had on Awake, I can't help but wonder if it was
this aspect of the band's direction that he disagreed with. Instead
of doing slightly-funky-slightly-experimental things in their songs,
they were taking a more straightforward approach.

The reason I mention this now is because I've heard how the new material
doesn't sound as complex or proggy (I haven't heard the new material,
so take all this with a big fat grain of salt). This would continue
to conform to this trend. The only thing wrong with this theory is
Kevin's solo material, which would suggest he got tired of the entire
genre altogether. But now that I hear about the new Fates album, and
how Kevin seems to be back to his old tricks, I've started wondering
    about this again.

Could it be that his solo material is simply one way of continuing
the experimental, "out-there" style of song-writing he craves? Perhaps
Dream Theater simply wasn't being daring enough anymore, and the style
of music he had on his solo demos simply reflected the best music he
could produce on his own while still being something completely different
(I doubt he would try to write Metropolis Pt. II with a sequencer).
When he heard FW was going to record a nifty 55-minute song, perhaps
this daring style of metal was just what he was looking for. So
where many of us thought that Kevin had moved on to different musical
desires, perhaps it was the other way around and Kevin saw that DT
was starting to move away from the wild, cutting-edge stuff they did
    in their early days.

Or maybe he just needed to eat. 8^)

Of course this is all extremely wild speculation, and remember that
there are rampant IMHOs placed throughout this wherever I refer to my
view of previous albums, but I would really like to hear a more
in-depth analysis of Kevin's contribution on the new Fates album.
Does it really bring back memories of I&W? Does he really sound like
his old self? Because if he does, then I think it just proves that
not a one of us have any idea what's going on in that poor boy's head. 8^)

Ok, enough rambling, sorry for the length, opinions welcome, flames
    promptly ignored.

Sorry about this reply if it's been covered, I'm about 30 jams behind... Anyway, Nuggetman mentioned the web ring he's doing, and he said something about the graphics on my Ytsejam shirt page. I just wanted to clear up that the front graphic on the front was printed from a rendering done by Chris Hailey in Washington. I do do graphic design and some 3D rendering, but that one was not mine. If you want to see some of what I've done, the URL's in my sig. I'd be happy to do a ring logo if one hasn't been made, but if you're looking for something rendered, talk to chris, I don't have the time to devote to modeling right now. Let me know...

Turn left walk about 100 meters go up some stairs and there you are. The front door of the Markthalle! All without waiting for any lights or anything *grin*. Anyone crazy enough to fly to Germany to see the tour drop me a line. My apartment is quite big and I might be able to put 1-2 people up for the show.

Also about FW touring with Conception and Elegy. I have heard semi-official word from people in the know that on August 28th here in Hamburg Stratovarius will start their tour. The co-headliner will be Conception and the opener will be Elegy. So I don't know about these 2 bands being with FW, but who knows.

Of course there are also rumors about Strat and Gamma Ray but Gamma Ray is a long way from finishig the album (only one song recorded) so who knows about this tour either *shrug*.

5 days until DT in Nuernberg and then Munich! See some of you there.

    Hi,

Via this list I became curious about Savatage. So I bought Handful of Rain. What a great band; gotta have more!

    Hi guys,

In a magazine I read an advertisement of a JP Guitar Instructional Video. Is it any good, and is it two hours, as stated in that ad?

George Kirk about the new QR :

I was also disappointed (not angry). I TOO got into it later ;-) Listened to it 25 times in 7 days :-) Hated it at first, liked it after 3 listens, got hooked on it after about 10 (I think). My guess is a lot of people hate it when they first hear it, and immediately bitch about it on the Jam... Later, some of them get into it but never have to balls to say they were wrong. People who love Dream Theater should know you can't judge an album on a first listen, or a band on (part of) one album. _____

I'm not with DTIFC, so I haven't read the actual interview. I think it could be that James was joking about working with Alex Lifeson, because of how much Rush was against the Rush tribute "Working Man". Just a thought.

I posted about starting a Ytse-Asshole form on my homepage, a few days (or a lot of digests) ago. I just set it up, so check it out :-) I really hope this will take some of the flaming off this list. Not that I'm expecting it, but you never know until you try :-> Here's what I put on my page as an introduction. You might wanna read it first, before voting :-)

The form can be found on http://www.prognosis.com/itchy/ from now on. Right now, it's just an experiment. I might take it down next month, if no one's interested. We'll see...
