    >King James

King James was a project put together by a couple of friends in L.A. in 1994.
Rex Carroll and Jimi Bennett. These two guys recruited Robert Sweet and Tim
Gaines (formerly of Stryper) to do the rhythm section, and a fine job they did
too. I picked up the self titled release through CD Universe @
     http://www.cduniverse.com
This is the only release to date from them. Its pretty good. The opening
track scores in at 5:45 and is straight ahead rock with a few twists. Cool!!!

    Glen

BTW: This is my first post. If anyone actually reads this on the jam I'll be
amazed and pissed. Because I have been trying to figure out how to get
posted. If all I had to do was hit reply I'll feel really STUPID. And Oh!!!!!
All you guys bitchin' about wwhose country is the best,STOP!!!!!!! Can't we
all just listen to the DT and get along!!!!!!

w00!!!! what an amazing clinic. Not only was JP around, Derek also did one
before petrucc' and later they got together and jammed. Derek i must say is
one of the coolest guys in the band, very friendly, casual, talkative, i
wasnt expecting him to be so outgoing and cool. Also played two songs i
hadnt heard yet that are new DT stuff, which are You Or Me (i think) and
Hollow Years. i REAAAAALY hope to hear HY on the new disc, that one had my
spine in chills. :) saw some jammers there as usual. hung out with aaron
happe, talked to dale newberry for a while, saw pat griffin- was planning to
say hi after the autograph signing but you split, sorry dude! :) as for
John, it was phenomenal, and he's a really cool guy. I wont indulge into
detail, i'll just say the coolest part of all is when John and Derek jammed
Prince! WOOOOOOOO!! to all you there i didnt see, know, recognize,
whatever.. hell, drop me e mail anyway , i'll talk to anyone who was there.
    :)

Hrm. I just don't get it.

As much as it's out of the way for any fans (except me), why would a
band like Queensryche play in Pocatello, ID? It's a small little
pissdump college town for cryin out loud.

(Fine by me, it's a 1 hr. drive from here. :)

    WOO!

I'll get details and stuff tomorrow since I know there are a few
scattered Idahoan jammers on here that probably like QR as well.
Anyone know off the bat whether this is a little warm up tour where
they'll be under that one name "Death on Wings" or something? That
would be way kewl to see them playing in a little dive bar like the
1st National where it would be like a 1 to 1 show. I still like the
big cinematic show like Road to the Prmised Land, too, but this could
    rock verily. :)

Take Hold! (Sorry, had to be done. :)
"And lo cameth down from the mountain the wombat
gaveth the blessing of life unto Australia. Thus
spaketh he 'dweefle' and it was good. O, how the
divine blessing of his teaching scoureth the land
and yea, harken unto he the herald of the Divine
Being 'dweefle' and harken unto thyself the message
of the wombat, and ye shall gain everlasting peace."

    For obscure lyrics:
I have Gillan's "Glory Road" tape. At the end, two guys are yelling at
eachother in some fake language. (If it's a real language they really screw
it up). The words go something like this..."You Scnmickerah Schnootin'
Gwablah Smelyer lak shmab spatwoolg...etc" The other guy is yelling back
"eeh! oor ah ah ah greeeeeee!" If you ever see this in the store, it's
worth ten bucks just to make you laugh when you're in a foul mood.

    It IS 9/8!!!!!!!!!!! Count the eighth notes!!!!!!!! 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9,1 2 3
    4 5 6 7 8 9....
It can't be 4/4 and 5/4 because they are playing over eighth notes that are
being laid down so superbly by MP. Watch the Live in Tokyo video and listen
to the studio shots when KM is playing the Surrounded part, you can hear the
click track in the back ground clicking the EIGHTH notes. Eights notes = 9/8

Thank you.....................sorry I couldn't let it go no any longer!

    A couple questions for everyone...

First, does anyone know if Andre Matos has an instructional video out? My singer wanted me to check all my resources...He's sick of working with the Jim Gilette vid. :) I know Angra's bassist and one of the guitarists have released vids. Just curious.

Also, any information on the name of the last track on Sanvoisen's 'Exotic Ways' album? I've been trying and trying to find out, but there's minimal information on the band ANYWHERE.

    Help me.....please?

Well, I just got back from a four hour round trip to see John and Derek play at McMurray Music in St. Louis. I'm sure that others will post, so I'll just list some highlights...

Guy: "What's John Myung like?" Derek: "You know, I've played with John for two and a half years now, and I just met him last week."

Derek: "When I solo, I approach it like a guitarist would. I generally look for the sounds that have... um.. what's the word I'm looking for...? Balls."

John: "Uh... Hmmm... have to think of a question here... Ok, what's being done to the guy on the cover of our first album?" Me: "He's being branded." <John tosses me an Ibanez hat> "Is that Harry Connick Jr. on the cover?"

John: "Ok, for a shirt. How many instrumentals has Dream Theater done? And you have to name them..." Guy: "4. Erotomania, Ytsejam, Eve, and... and... oh shit, what's the other one... Bombay Vindaloo!" Me: "What about Showdown? Moonbubbles? Barfbag? The Ressurection of Ernie?"

John: "How many watts are the speakers I'm using?" (I think this one was a joke) Guy1: "100!" Guy2: "80!" Me: "one point twenty one gigawatts!" (Back to the Future ref... :)

New songs showcased: Burning My Soul, Lines in the Sand, bits of Just Let Me Breathe. (heard those already) John also played along to Hollow Years (new one to me). I believe it had vox, but they were drowned out.

Derek and John also jammed together to Purple Rain and Sammy's Nap (a tune John wrote while his daughter, Sammy, was sleeping one day). SN was mostly guitar soloing (with key accomp) over a fairly constant drum beat and synth riff (on DAT). It contained a few snippits of Lines in the Sand and Where Are You Now for those who have heard them before.

To close the show, John played two songs from the Sega Saturn game Necronomicon, which he says is out now in Japan. If you haven't heard these songs yet, they were availible at one time at www.mesaboogie.com and may well still be there.

I also ended up with an Ibanez shirt for naming the first new song he played at the clinic (Burning My Soul).

I got to talk to both John and Derek after the clinic, and gave them both complimentary Ytsejam shirts. They're very nice guys, down to earth, not the least bit egotistical. They were friendly thought the whole clinic, answered as many questions as they could. All in all, it was a very cool experiance.

I met Richard Warren there, but I didn't notice others with ytsejam shirts on (I think I was the only one, which is why he approached me. Most everyone else had a tour shirt on).

One final note, Derek said that at a recent meeting with the recording label, they mentioned that they recieved our petition. It (according to Derek) totalled over a quarter of a million signatures and was refered to by the label as "the single largest show of fan support we have seen for a band." They hope to be in the studio shortly after the Euro shows. Derek says the new CD is "sooner than you think." It was also inplied by John that it will only be a single CD, but he did go for the audience suggestion of a second CD with Metropolis II (The Miracle This Record Came Out), now totalling 25 minutes.

    Well, until next time...

    Hi all

what, Dream Theater content in one of my posts? Well, sort of, see if you can spot it.

Yesterday I bought an album that I'd been eagerly awaiting for a long time, and this little beauty will almost certainly be in my top 10 releases for 97, regardless of what else comes out. Neil's top tip: go and listen to "The More Things Change" by the mighty Machine Head. We had to wait more than two years for this thing, and it's so good, I'd have been ready to wait even longer. This album grabs you by the balls (or whatever the Ystejammerettes have), gives them a good hard squeeze, swings you around in the air a few times and then throws you against the wall - but being a good masochist, you come back for more. This album is just throbbing with energy, it's full of evil, dirty riffs, screaming guitars come at you from all directions, and Rob Flynn's vocals leave you with the feeling that you've just got to go out and break something. Apropos vocals, Rob has obviously learned a lot while touring with the last album, because his range and style have become a lot more variable. Also, the new drummer, Dave McClain, is more flexible than Chris Kontos was, although just as mean and brutal. The only bit of the album I don't like is the intro to the 9th track - the sound of a dentist's drill, but this could be because I'm in the middle of a root canal job at the moment! This is not an album for a romantic night in near the fire with the girlfriend/boyfriend and bottle of wine, but if you want an album that makes you want to pick up a couple of semi-automatic weapons, go to McDonalds and wipe out all the staff and customers, then this is an album for you. I'm already looking forward to May, when Machine Head will be touring in Germany with Napalm Death as support. If you eat hamburgers, you have been warned!

All this talk of Machine Head brings me to another point. What's the difference for you guys between 'hard' and 'heavy' stuff? Examples: My Dying Bride are definitely heavy but not hard, whereas Helmet are hard but not heavy. Any ideas about where the border is? Another example: Pantera are hard and sometimes heavy. Get the picture?

So where was the Dream Theater content? Easy: Mike likes Machine Head, and James likes Napalm Death. And I got my tickets for the Gross Umstadt gig yesterday.

stay safe and happy listening Neil Gallop (nga@software-ag.de) Currently playing: Chris Squire - A Fish Out Of Water

Historically, all compound meters (read: anything where the top number is a multiple of 3) are done where the beat is on a group of three of the notes as defined by the bottom number. er, I mean 6/8 has two beats, each beat being a dotted quarter note long. 9/8 is three beats. That's the classic definition. These days it's a bit looser, but if you take a piece that has five beats followed by four, i.e. intro to voices, surrounded, etc, and show it to your average music teacher, they'd say that 9/8 is not the best choice of meter. Notice I didn't say WRONG, I said not the best choice. The function of the meter signature is to give the person performing the piece a sense of where the beats are, and since compound meters were invented for a specific purpose, it would be much clearer to have the other type of 9 rhythm as alternating measures of 4/8 and 5/8 or however it's divided.

However, if the notes in the 9/8 measure are barred together in such a way to show that it is indeed 4/8 then 5/8 or whatever, that goes a long way to alleviate the problem. It would still add something to the readability to have it split, tho.

Hiya ! I don't know about the tv-frequencies in other countries, but I'm able to hear the one that comes out of the tv's in Finland. And I can't hear the noise in Space-dye vest.. maybe my hearing is selective ?? I can't say anything about that Q.ryche song 'cos I haven't listened to that album in a while. Maybe I'll listen to it someday and see if I can hear that sound there. Michal asked how do I know what my upper hearing limit is. Well, ever HEAR of hearing tests ? I've been to those for so many times. Maybe you should take one too so you would know your limits ? Just a thought.

Sebastian Bach: I think he's got great lungs and I like his voice. When I sang a lot and when I started, I used to sing to Skid Row. I remember how tough it was to keep singing as long as Bas did. Now it's not tough at all anymore, 'cos I've practised..

Warrior Soul: I've been a fan for about 7 years now.I really think they have powerful songs and some message there too. I love the songs Punk and belligerent, Hero, Lullaby, The losers..I would recommend this band if you're an open-minded person, not just into progmetal. This band has partysongs, lovesongs and all between. Give them a few listens ! Come walk with me we'll go to heaven.. Later, Satu
