    Ahoy,

    >are awesome. The only problem that i have with HitNF, is that there are
    >no really good, flashy guitar solos. Everything else is absolutely

Yeah, I agree... I love the solos on O:M and Empire... this one just leaves
you hanging... that's not to say I don't like it - this is a great album...
but every song, you're waiting for the solo, and it never comes, or at
least dissapoints... about the best solo I found, IMO, is on Reach... it's
about the most O:M sounding solo on there, but even it is not very long,
energetic, nor diverse.... but picking one, that's my choice. The
songwriting is still great, but it certainly is a different style. Oh well,
there's always O:M! By the way, has anyone ever seen the video promo for
O:M? it's called "Video Mindcrime" or something like that... it's really
the band jumping around playing some tracks from the album, showing off
some cool 80's moves, and also has a lot more video from the actual story
of the album. It's still pretty cool to watch, and is pretty well done too.
    Anyone seen this?

That's right. You should also have noticed this same sort of high-frequency
sound at the intro to Queensryche's "The Mission", when the channels on the
TV are turned (rotary dial) and there's a preacher/evangelist speaking the
words "...reach deep into your heart, and your pocketbooks, and take His
hand." The squeal, which I think is generated by the raster beam drawing the
images on the phosphor, is around 15- or 16-kHz. You'd be surprised as to
how many people actually cannot hear up that high in frequency. I once did a
little test with some friends in my high school electronics class (circa
1987). The classroom had computers all around the room, and I turned some of
the monitors on, and left others off. Then I asked the friends to tell which
ones were on (no image on the screen and no power indicator). I was
surprised that some of them could not hear that pitch.

Now what I'd really like to know, is if anyone can heard the sonic frequency
generated by security system motion sensors. You know, like ones you see
mounted up in the ceiling at your favorite jewelry store (or anywhere else
you might've seen them.) They're definitely higher in frequency than TV's,
but I'd like to know exactly how much, because I CAN hear that shit. Always
have. 19 kHz maybe? Maybe I should be tested. Maybe not.

On the live show thread, here are some bad things that have happened:
    - Spilling gas all over your equipment.
    - Accidentally cutting your hand open and trying to act calm and finish the
show with blood gushing all over everything.
    - Starting the floor on fire.
    - Hitting your partner with a bullwhip.
    - Falling down and wrecking your propstand, sending equipment flying everywhere.
    - Two Words: 'Drunk Hecklers'
    - Two More Words: 'Screaming Children'

well, I suppose these things happen more often in a juggling show than a
rock show, but hey, they're nasty nonetheless! Oh, and don't forget the best
and most common thing : kids who keep yelling 'Hey, I can do that!'.

    Jam

Hi there. Just a quick message to say that the new Ytsejam
"Most Frequent Poster" and "Domain" lists are available on
my homepage. 380 posters, 1723 messages and 114 URL's this
         month. Check it out :-)

Just had an idea (uh oh!!!). What if I put together a form
on my page, where you can vote for the Ytse-Asshole of the
month ? Instead of flaming someone on the mailinglist, you
vote for them on my page. At the end of each month, I will
be able to make an official list of Ytse-Assholes :) :)
Instead of responding to flame-bait you just go to my page
and paste the message's header (FROM:, DATE: and SUBJECT:)
in a form. I don't think anyone in his/her right mind wants
to be known as an Ytse-Asshole. Maybe this helps to avoid
those countless flamewars :-) Like I said, just an idea.
I'm serious about this. Lemme know what you think, ok ? :>

The 2 cd set, does have major wicked packaging. A REALLY
REALLY REALLY well written biography as well is included and
as usual, the cd artwork is great. I think the great thing
about Angra, is that, besides the amazing quality of music, so
much effort has gone into the packaging of Holy Land. It's the
best piece of work since Maiden's Best of the Beast. I'm still
trying to Find Reaching Horizons, as well as the earlier
releases...oh well, maybe it'll be on the livedisc coming out.

same here, but insert the word beer instead of gas...

    > - Starting the floor on fire.

wow, I guess that would kinda suck... my experience with floors is singing (eyes closed), and feeling the floor suddenly start moving up and down. This, combined with the knowledge that you're playing in a 100+ year old house ewith about 200 other people on the floor below can be scary...

    > - Hitting your partner with a bullwhip.

you call this a BAD thing....when we play Half Naked, I kinda get off on it, not so much the bullwhip as my guitarist leaving the strings on top of the neck uncut and whipping me as we play.......ooooooohhh, feels so good......

another weird experience I had was that we were covering "Cowboys from Hell", so I took this guy's SuperSoaker water pistol and starting shooting the audience with it. As I was shooting it, I was noticing people grabbing their faces in pain. I didn't realize that the SuperSoaker was filled with VODKA, and I was shooting people in the eyes with that......kinda sucked for them, but I thought it was pretty funny.....

and the ultimate bad experience playing in front of a crowd...

    - playing in front of 2 people... - playing in front of a bunch of people who just STAND there...........

    hey all,

Just letting you all know that if you haven't gone to Doc's prog page, you really should. He definitely has a good comprehensive page dedicated to prog. It's a definite recommendation to those who are interested in other prog bands - it has sound clips, comments, and lots of DT and FW (he *IS* a FW freak - wait and see how many posts he puts up once the new FW is out! :P...).

    The URL is: http://www.gmsnet.com/progmetal

By the way, I heard some Lemur Voice clips on there and I must say these guys kicked my ass....I must have their stuff. Can someone E-mail me at the address below and give me some full info. on the albums they have (rec. co., #'s, etc.)

Okay, so I'm at Knights of the Round looking at what they have by Angra, and here's what I see:

Angra Angels Cry $21.99 Angra Evil Warning (Japanese) $18.99 Angra Freedom Call (German Version) $19.99 Angra Freedom Call (Jap) $48.99 <--------- Ouch! Angra Holy Land $22.99 Angra Holy Land (2 CD Germany) $30.99 Angra Holy Land + 1 (Jap Import) $27.99

Here's the issue: Evil Warning? What's that? Opinions on it's likeability? Also, WTF is up with the price on that Japanese Freedom Call CD? Holy Shit! Anyone know if there's a difference b/w the two Freedom Call versions? I have a feeling their prices are about as low as they get for this kind of stuff.

Thanks everyone who's been helping in this Angra pursuit.

Chris, You'll be happy to know (and please feel free to pass this all on), that I was at Elektra yesterday and they mentioned receiving the petition and were VERY impressed. (almost to the point of disbelief!!) I don't know what it's impact will turn out to be at this point, as they were already looking to get us started as soon as we return from Europe (say May) with a release probably in the Fall (say Sept./Oct.), but I think this really was a nice and much-needed slap in the face and reminder that there are SO many of you incredible DT fans out there patiently waiting. Thanks to EVERYBODY involved here on this. Mission accomplished and a job well done!! In the meantime (as always), as soon as I have CONFIRMED starting dates, release dates, producer name, etc. etc. You all will know.........Until then, look out Europe!!!!

In the newest issue of Bass Player magazine (May 1997), they review the John Myung Progressive Bass Concepts video. I thought I'd post a transcript of the review for all interested (hell, sure beats the current threads).

    John Myung Progressive Bass Concepts

This is the first instructional video by the Dream Theater "wunderkind," and it's a good one--although you'll have to leave your short attention span on PAUSE for the duration. About the first third of the hour-long video is devoted to a chord-tone lesson that's hopelessly boring to watch but extremely valuable from a theory standpoint. Myung goes on to touch on harmonics, left- and right-hand technique (killer exercises here), tapping, and his other-worldly, "backwards-mode" to scales. A 40-page booklet illustrates almost everything, in both standard notation and tab. A great look inside the mind of a unique talent. $49.95 from Rittor Music/Warner Bros., 15800 N.W. 48th Ave., Miami, FL 33014. (Karl Coryat) <end transcript>

Hmm, makes me wanna buy it immediately. Hopefully, others agree.

Take care and tempt not the fates,
