Thanks to those of you who responded to my question about a week ago
concerning which album people with a "lyrical" approach to listening prefer.
The response was not overwhelming but essentially confirmed my initial guess.
With one or two exceptions, most people who focus on vocals (including my gf)
preferred Awake as the album with the most vocal variety and "color". I still
prefer I&W, but then I listen to the instruments more than anything else, and
I think songs like Metropolis, TTT, and Learning to Live are almost
untouchable - they've been chiseled into a special and elite place within the
musical corners of my brain. Oh, and Surrounded is one of the most
ass-kicking rock ballads imaginable. Who woulda thought 5/4 could sound so
    damned smooth?

    cheers,
    -Neil.

Hey! Let's stop the American bashing! Just 'cuz we're stupid doesn't
mean we can't kick everybody else's asses with the world's most powerful
    (and gay) army!

    >:D

And 'em Canadians don't need any shit either. Two words: Flying Caribou eh.

And the Brits...they had the Beatles for cryin' out loud! Of
    course...they also had Oasis....

Anyhoo, what ever happened to that PETITION that I signed so long ago?
Did it ever get sent to Elektra? I think somebody should have spent the
money to print it out on paper and snail mail the thanged ding to them as
well. And when is that studio time that DT is scheduled for? Mid July?
Gosh that would suck. I live on the WEST coast with my friends from
Metallica and Megadeth (hell, us Arizonans keep running into the members
of Megadeth every so often), but I wouldn't mind seeing Petrucci and the
gang as well! TOUR THE WEST! TOUR THE WEST I SAY!

Ugh. Well, I think I've waisted your bandwidth enough.

BTW, what the hell is "waisted bandwidth" on an open discussion forum?

Debbie asked what the email adress for MTV was, the only one that I
could find was the one for M2, which should be fine. it is
M2MUSIC@aol.com. This is what I sent to them:

Many ppl out there do not like alterntaive music and we would like to
see something that we enjoy on MTV. First of all I would like to
request for you to play a Dream Theater song: Lie or Take The Time.
Second me and MANY others would like to see some other stuff played
like: Dream Theater, Queensryche, older Metallica, Tool, Rush, Megadeth,
Type O Negative, SavaTage ect. Please either bring back Headbangers
Ball or another show like it. Thanks

If you noticed I did not yell at them about how bad alternative is, I
just told them that I would like to see something different played. If
you are going to send something to them please do not start some crap
like "alternatice SUCKS!!!! FUCK IT we need something good!!! :-)" I
dont think they will respond well if we do that :-)

Tis true, jp clinic this thursday!!! WOOOO HOOOO!!!!!!!!! they wont be in
europe til a bit later this month. man, this sucks, DS and JP will be
giving clinics at the same time, same place, but not the same room because
it would legally screw them over.. something about members of a band being
present onstage together not under record contract or some weird crap. oh

Things I hate about playing live

-The hair always getting caught in my mouth and not being able to fix it.
-Local radio station announcers shouting "Are you here to party?"
-Tripping over my own cord and unplugging my bass.
-The inevitable farting sound from my bass cab, caused by a bad ground.
-The beer may be free, but it's only 10% beer, 90% water.
-When drummers screw up the beats and fuck up the rest of the band.
-As a bass player, I never, ever get my own monitor.
-People who always yell "Skynrd!" and "Slayer!"
-People who never yell "Dream Theater!"
-When the only other people in the club are the bartender and that ex-con
     who always plays pool.
-People always show up late for our rendition of Maiden's "Losfer Words."
-Dropping my pick through the cracks on the floor of the stage.
-"Oh we can only pay $500 tonight. Come back tomorrow for the other $200."
-Playing in the winter at clubs with no heat.
    -And most of all...
Nobody tapes my favorite shows for me while I'm stuck playing a shitty-ass
     gig.

Just wanted to share that with my fellow musicians.

Oh wait, I can't play live, because there are no other serious musicians within about a 30 mile radius of where I go to school, and I'm too busy with classes in my real, non-music major to try to seek out other people who would like to do something just a little bit original, instead of play fucking Sponge songs (not that there's anything wrong with Sponge!!!). yeah right. Hrm. That's funny. I actually like the new album, and can still go back in time and pretty much rattle off every line from The Warning album. I've collected so many QR boots that people can't even give them to me anymore, and I only hang out with people who bear a striking resemblence to Geoff Tate. Gee, I must not be a true fan. Strange how they've "sold out" and I haven't seen a video or even heard their song once on the radio. Hell, Disconnected and Bridge were on the radio all the time after Promised Land came out. I still hear Silent Lucidity and Another Rainy Night all the time, and still I haven't heard a thing from the new album.

    Hi everyone,

to everyone that has a question about what Angra cd's to get.

The double cd for Holy Land, the second cd is a live acoustic concert recoreded at the FNAC in France. There's only 3 songs on it...the second cd is the japanese version of Holy Land, which has the extra song.

The BEST thing to do, unless your a total fanatic :) Buy the normal/domestic release of the cd...then, buy the Freedom Call EP. You get the japanese bonus track, PLUS 5 other songs, including a Judas Priest cover of Painkiller. Your lacking those 3 songs on that double cd set but well, taking this route, you get more for your cash. Of course, you can always just buy the entire damn thing.

I don't think that live at the FNAC disc is available on its own, at least I haven't seen it yet.

This mentality makes no sense to me at all. *I'm* paying money for a=20 product the band is selling me. I don't owe them a damn thing. If anyone = owes anyone anything, the band owes its fans a little allegiance. I'm not = =20 suggesting that a group of musicians should make any music other than the= =20 music they want to on account of their fans. But here's a thought I have= n

Clark, You totally misread the point.. I'm not saying you have to go buy the album, listen to it and love it. I was trying to say that you should support them in their decisions to alter their sound and change there style, and take the good with the bad no matter what. Not support them in a financial sense. But to go and verbally degrade a band for releasing an album that does not match up to his/hers own personal preferences or expectations does not make sence and I would be hard pressed to call that person a "true fan" . From a personal stand point, I don't believe a band owes there fans anything, I think it's the reversal. Plus, the only thing a fan should really owe them is nothing but respect... nothing more, nothing less Plus, if DT decided to go soft country, or POLKA for that matter, I myself, would respect their wishes and support them in their decisions.. I know I may not buy the album, but I certainatly wouldn't scrutinize them all to hell for it. I'll be a die hard Metallica fan for the rest of my life, but I just prefer their pre-Black album material. Same with DT if it ever comes to those circumstances.

Well, if the musicians have any REAL integrity, they will not listen to t= he record company. FUCK the record companies! FUCK THEM!!!! Write and play = the music you love, and if you comprimise your integrity and put out what someone else tells you......well that just shows what kind of a person yo= u are. Are you a whore and a slave to the money, or are you real???! Maybe thats why DT isn't in the studio right now, huh?? =20

Thank you for partially making my point, DT does not want to conform.. therefore they are not making money and puting out an album and are set on Elektra back burner.. it's a sad state of sorry affairs, but true none the less. . In the record business unfortunately everything is money now... it's no longer about the MUSIC, it's about money. Who do you think a company is going to prioritize.. the really talented band that went to school and learned their instruments who's album go gold, maybe platnum at best. Or the cheesy 3 chord garage band from NYC who's music is so simple and so boring and will relate to all the MTV brainwashed teens and who's album goes triple platinum. You kinda have to do what the execs ask you to do, or you may be without a job, may have a job but not making money (ie: what Elektra is doin to DT right now) which is worse than having no contract because you are bound by signature and can't go look around to other labels without getting sued. Or you breach your contract and get sued for a couple of millions of dollars. It's alot easier to say "FUCK THEM" and then to say it and actually do it. I'm not saying I agree with this bullshit ideology (and far from it, I want to see DT release a new album as much as the rest of you) but more simply. I was just trying to offer an explanation as to why QR might not sound like what everyone was hoping for.

No they didn't, and I'm sure if they did.. there would be far less bands out there. But if ya want to release an album and not break contract, than ya have to satisfy the big dogs. What, you think a band writes and records an album and then BAM! It goes into post production? Nope, sorry, not the way it works. That album is heavily scrutinized and listened to by the record company management, and if he/she/they doesn't like it or it doesn't think it will sell, then ya go back to the drawing board..and this process keeps going on until the band produces something that fits the criteria or sounds a bit more like what they're looking for. -ArchAngel
