That's like saying that if someone "likes" to shoot heroin or
practice self-mutilation, it's "good" for them, even though it's destroying
them. (This is an extreme analogy, for sure, but it's valid.)

Maybe I can get some other discussion going on here so I'll give it a try.
Heres my ranting and ravings, everytime I read a story about James LaBrie by
a fan, how come it comes off like he's a complete asshole? I don't think
I've ever read one good fan experience with this guy. Does someone want to
share some cool James stories with me so I don't end up not going to their
concert because I think he's an asshole. I'd hate to think someone that
talented could be like that. Thanks.

Well, speaking from experience, Italian Catholics (like my father's family
and the Petrucci family) often feel a sense of relief when a loved one
passes on, especially after a long battle with illness. There's a sense
of comfort in knowing that the person has stopped suffering and moved on
to a better place, and the friends and family that are left to grieve
sometimes do so by celebrating their loved one's passing into heaven.
It's analogous in some ways to a traditional New Orleans funeral
procession, but less jazzy. :) So, John might have been celebrating the
fact that his father's pain had finally been taken away.
Personally, I love the song. It's very uplifting to me. Next time
someone close to me passes away, that's probably the song I'll turn to for
a little support.

December 29, 1995, DT played the Birch and I was fortunate enough to get
backstage and meet them. I said something to James about how cool it was
that the band would spend the kind of time they did with their fans after
the show. His response was, "Well, we wouldn't be here if it weren't for
you guys, eh?"
----Huge big-time thanks go out to Rick "Spine" Audet for recommending the band Mr. So & So to me. He sent me a couple of .wav files, and after the first listen, I was immediately hooked. (I have put these files, of the song "Tick-A-Box," on my ftp site: ftp://digital.dreamt.org/pub/so-n-so.) I ordered the CD "Compendium" from CD Connection the next day, and it got here on Friday, about a week and a half later. Holy shit. Everyone here that likes Yes, old Rush, and Spock's ought to take the time to download these samples. They're just incredible.
I've been thinking really hard about how to describe these guys, and I haven't come up with anything, because they really don't sound like anything else I've heard. Everything's pretty major-key and happy. They keys and bass are way out front, but the guitarist gets his licks in. The songs are very long, averaging about 10 minutes each. There's a certain progginess about them, in that they slip in and out of 4/4 here and there, but gracefully. They're like Spock's but less weird. One song, "Hobson the Traveller," reminds me in ways of both "Red Barchetta" and "By-Tor and the Snow Dog."
Hopefully, I've interested you enough to d/l these samples. It's worth it. These guys are incredible.
----
So, last night, my band Nine Miles (with fellow jammer Richie Rivera on drums) played in a battle of the bands on campus here at UVM. We lost, and it didn't matter. This was the greatest show I have ever played. We managed to squeeze three songs into our 20-minute slot. But during, and especially after, each song, people were just *screaming*. The crowd was going nuts. Even the crunchy hippie types were into it, doing that white-girl dance. And even with a singer that's only been in the band for a couple of weeks, we played extremely tightly. Everything came off without a hitch. (I didn't even screw up on the keyboard parts. :)
Prog is NOT dead. Start a band, and play some prog for your friends. We just might be able to start something huge.

White on dark blue. Never creased but it *does* contain some imperfections. If there is any question about said imperfections, ask me. Nothing that would make it look less than stellar on someone's wall though. Definitely a collector's item. The first jammer who responds gets it (will the benefits of ack mode pay off yet again ??).

I havn't heard the new album, but I've heard a song or two on the radio (BTW, for all you jammers in the Minneapolis area, in case you havn't heard, we have a real station again! X105 -- it replaced Rev105. They even have a Metallica hour at 10pm every night it seems...). Anyway, I was watching the St. Louis vs Detroit hockey game today, and during a break in the action, the PA system played "SIgn of the Times" (or whatever it's called). I was pretty impressed.. Now if they'll only play DT... :) Chris

Hey Dr. Mosh - Very nice FW guide...
They replaced singer John Arch with Ray Alder and thus their style began to change. The change from No Exit to Parallels is because of Mark Zonder adding his influence to the music. But I would add a note - Mark Zonder was formerly with a band called Warlord. They have a couple of albums and a video out. Deliver Us (1983) And the Cannons of Destruction Have Begun (1984). The 2nd being the soundtrack to the video. I have all 3 - Hard to find stuff though. If anyone has stuff to trade and is interested, let me know. Lerxst-NJ@msn.com

But Howard Stern is on Bob 101 now, so at least in the morning "Bob rocks!" Tell Tom Bernard to start working on his resume since he'll need to find new work soon, if he wants to continue to work in radio that is. Maybe he can intern at Howard's station in NY (wxrk).
Here in the SF area we have a station called ksjo that has "Mandatory Metallica" every night at 10 and "Hard Core Hell" at 11. The best two hours of radio in the bay area (except Stern of course).

shortly after the first ytsejam t-shirts went out, i wore mine to a Dixie Dregs show here in vancouver, b.c., (jordan was playing keys with them and i heard he was going to be DT's new player so i wanted to see if he noticed the shirt). I was surprised that Steve Morse wore a very cool DT shirt with a large majesty logo on the front. Anyways, after the show, while talking to some people who've never heard of DT and wanted to know what that weird symbol was on steve's and mine shirts was, this woman came up to me and asked me where i got that shirt. i told her it was from the ytsejam internet mailing list. she looked surprised, and asked me to come with her to meet someone. to my huge surprise, she introduced me to her husband, James! At first i thought he was going to beat me up, because he thought someone was making a profit by selling unauthorized DT shirts. he was asking me who made them, and how much they cost, etc. But when i told him who we were and how big fans we all were, he started lightening up. This was shortly after the awake tour had been announced, but the cd didn't come out yet. He told me about the new album, and how excited he was about it. I told him some stuff that i read on the jam, that he didn't know, and he said, "you guys know everything! i bet you guys know whenever i go take a shit!" Anyways, he was really cool once he found out what we were all about. Until then, he didn't know about the ytsejam. I told him he would be getting an ytsejam shirt soon, and that he would see a bunch of us on tour. He said he was looking forward to it.
and when i went to the malibu '95 xmas show, and me and rachel got back to where the meet and greet was, james was again very cool. he chatted with us for a few minutes, and was very polite. He remembered the incident at the dixie dregs show even. (at least he said so :) ).

Yes, it *is* indeed them. They went under the name "Sons of Thunder" and they were a parody band sort of making fun of all the cock-rock/ party-band-type acts out there. They played a new GC original song called "Don't Hate Me Because I'm Beautiful" (or sometimes called "My Bloody Valentine"). The song is not on any GC CDs or b-sides...nor do I expect it to show up on any in the near future... :)
They got the cameo in the movie through their current management at the time (Concrete Management), which is also how White Zombie got their cameo.
They didn't go under their real band name because it would be...um...bad for press. Seeing as they were pretty much making fun of the band, it wouldn't have made sense to hold the GC banner... :)

Jammers, I love music and am looking for some help. I LOVE DT (Esp I+W, but the other stuff too) as most of you do. I also LOVE Shadow Gallery. The new FW is pretty darn cool, but I don't like their old stuff very much. Rush is pretty awesome too. Marillon IMHO really bites. What else is good music that I'd like? I have gotten referrals to both Marillon and Majellon <-- really spelled wrong, and QR and didn't like them very much QR was OK. I'm not trying to start a war, just asking for some help. I would love some ideas on some new cds because I+W, Awake, Carved in Stone, and Live @ Marquee, and all of my Rush are all getting old after about a million times listening. PLEASE help me, OK? Thanks to anyone who helps. The Laminator

So, the "new big thing" is turning into the "techno revolution." My god, I hope the States get a clue and listen to at least some of the stuff overseas (hell, even Mexico has better techno than we do). I can't stand American techno, and I haven't heard much of British/Euro tech to make any judgements on it, but as a guitarist, I'm scared.
Even LESS talent will be required to make millions! Go ahead, now you don't even NEED an instrument! Write your songs in the comfort of your own COMPUTER! No need for theory, no need for technique. No inspiration either--just a computer, some alcohol, and some big ass speakers. Dread the very day that you hear a remix of Eruption, because IT WILL HAPPEN (if somebody still hasn't done it yet)!!!
:P
Okay, so I'm bein' a little closed minded about the whole techno thing, but I'm just one of those people who are into the "real thing," ya know? I don't find any fun in going to a show with a bunch of pantywastes pretending to play guitar, with a CD playing for them through a bass amp. None of that corporate trend shit for me thank you very much. >;D
Speakin' of music...
I just saw Airheads, it's a great movie IMNSHO, and I recommend it to any practicing/performing musicians out there! I tell ya, if the petition doesn't work, we should follow those guys' example! AND Lemmy has cameos all over the film! Check it out!

Man, this list has turned into a madhouse... but!! It could be a good thing, it could be a bad thing...
Let's put it this way folks, if an album like APSoG produces such heated arguments, it must've done something and somebody right. If it was just a lame ass, half baked album, most people would be saying "oh, that's an ok album...", but no... it's creating a flurry of activity. Some of you are like "FUCK YOU DIE!!" and the other side is "FUCK YOU, IT SUCKS!!"... hey, don't you think that's what Jim Matheos was aiming for?? To create some kind of statement with music like that... :)
Obviously Fates is not for everyone... but if it was, would we Fates-heads still be Fates-heads?? Probably not... but on another side note... Chris Ptacek is kicked out of the Fates hardcore club cause he didn't get his Fates on opening day... :P
