The only reason "You Not Me" was made openly available to the members of
this list was so that 'jammers who had been waiting years to hear new DT
music could get a little teaser that might tide them over until
September 23. Negative comments about "You Not Me" at this time do
nothing whatsoever to support Dream Theater. This is possibly the most
critical junction so far in DT's career. Negativity is neither needed
nor welcomed, even in a limited-access forum such as the 'jam. Don't
look this gift horse in the mouth. Keep your complaints to yourself, at
least until everyone else has a copy of FiI on which to form their own
opinions and weigh them against yours.

I prefer Peruvian Skies, but then again, this is akin to asking whether
you would rather have a night alone with Neve Campbell or Pamela
Anderson. It's a matter of personal preference. And we know you're
married - that was a rhetorical question :)

    Wow!

The Jam is becoming fun again! Tons of bashing and flaming. And all about DT.

    > From: Joe Wright <jrwee@gator.net> > crap that is out there nowadays. I don't know if any of you guys knew > this but the song was co-written by Desmond Child. That probably > explains the catchy chorus, not that DT can't write one, but it's what > Desmond Child is known for. That could be why the chorus sounds so > different than the rest of the song. Of course this is all imo (except > for that Desmond Child part. I got that from the EastWest promo that > "You not Me" was on).

WHOOPS! Ok guys, I have to apologise to the band and Kevin Shirley and say Desmond Child sucks! *big grin* At least it's not our favorite band's fault.

But I'm still wondering. Usually you decide to use an external songwriter if you think he could help you with a song. Who the hell thought there was a problem with the original version. Shirley? EastWest? Really strange. There is maybe the best band I've ever heard and these guys think they need help from Desmond Child? Yeah, now they've got *two* big names to mention...

    > The great example already mentioned is with Another Day, can you judge the > rest of I & W on that one song ?

No, if course, and I'm glad about that. But who bashed the album? At least I was just complaining about this particular version of one song. Well, maybe two songs. ;-) And when I see the news quoted above I have a reason.

    > Whatever happend to our Japanese jammers ? > Do you guys know of the release date of FII in Japan ?

    97/9/25

    > this fucking kicks ass!!!!!! I hope we all keep an open mind and wait > untill the entire album comes out before we start jumping to any > conclusions... Thanks for listening... :)

Yes, that's for sure! Don't expect too much, though. It's still Dream Theater, but it's *different*. If it's better or worse is just a matter of taste.

    > "awesome". I'm sick as FUCK of hearing people basically say that whatever > was released would have been better if it was: Images & Words 2, Operation > Mindcrime 2, Moving Pictures 2, Master of Puppets 2, and so forth. I > imagine I'm being clear here even though the way I worded it above was a > bit sub-optimal. > > You Not Me is the best piece of songwriting DT has done yet.

If you referred to the part that apparently DT wrote themselves then I could agree...

BTW, I like Promised Land and Ride The Lightning better. And I was very satisfied with Awake. And I never cared too much for Rush at all ;-)))

Very emotional discussion here. DT should be proud of their fans - either they defend them no matter what they do or they are afraid that they might make a mistake. ;-)

    On with the show,

That's what it sounds like to me - more of a production thing than his style, although it IS different sounding for him. Progression is good. > >> Where the hell is Derek? Ummm, in the chorus he is playing these cool crunchy parts that _I_ can barely hear. Maybe it's my computer speakers, but I hear a bit of crunch underneath a blisteringly loud vocal track, and then the patented JP chord arpeggiations.

I guess I just don't like commercial mixes - I'm a "Balls and Chunk" kind of guy. > >I can hear the keyboards quite well. It goes a little back in the mix >during the chorus, but I can clearly hear what he's doing.

On a re - listen, I see your point. Yep, it's nipple time all right. We disagree.

    > >> And who mixed this thing? Cripes... The band has a guitarist and >> keyboardist, it'd be nice to HEAR them. >> > >I hope you're exaggerating here, because I can hear the guitars and the >keyboards VERY well.

I can hear them very well, if I block out a SNARE that's louder than the lead vocal track. Sorry, I hate this kind of "radio - friendly" production, so I bitch about it whenever possible.

Having said all that, I like the song - this bodes well, since I generally like singles the least out of every album.

Ya know, I don't post much, but I did notice this...First it's years of "when are they going to release the new album?" "the record company sucks cuz they won't make the new album" "why does it take so long for the new album" blah blah blah Well, it's here, and the majority of posts is all bad news! I haven't heard ANY of the new stuff, I couldn't get the mp3 to download yet, I haven't heard any of the Fix for 96 stuff, nothing...I have a feeling that I'll like it! After all, it IS Dream Theater! I have never heard a band compare to Dream Theater... they are obviously in a league of their own and will stay that way for a while. :-)

As for Beavis and Butthead getting cancelled.... MTV did NOT cancel the Show... the creator, Mike Judge said that they had their time and it was time to move on. There were already 30 episodes made that will still air, and no more new ones will be produced. The possibility for movies in the future is there...

Does anyone care that the shit they talk on this list is read by > YNM is so bad that even if the remaining 10% was the second coming of 7:30-8:00 of Metropolis, the song would still suck. And as for your comment about Blind Melon fans, well, Blind Melon suck so much that I don't see how fans can possibly be disappointed.

When you release music of the quality DT has released in the past, you have some pretty high expectations to live up to. Just like when sports team with a lot of talent underachieves, and puts out a sub-par product, they should expect to be booed. And it's always hysterical to listen to fans who call up open line radio and say people should continue to support the team and go to games and keep their mouths shut.

And don't think it's only Grunge Theatre (Oops, did I write that? That should draw some flames... :) ) fans. I recall a lot of whining when Queensryche released HitNF... and if FII is as bad as HitNF, you better unsubscribe for a few weeks when it comes out.

I'm grateful for the new music, because I'll buy the album and go to DT's concerts and support them just like I always have, and if I'm spending money supporting them, I think I have a right to complain that a song sucks. But as I said before, if the majority of the new album is good, and if YNM helps make DT a little more successful, then I'll live with it, and just not listen to this one crappy song.

Anyway, this doesn't change the fact that this is mostly Kevin Shirley's fault. I'd put Kevin Shirley in a fucking Trash Can. The only good thing he did here was make Myung sound awesome.

    > You Not Me is the best piece of songwriting DT has done yet.

Whoa, that's a pretty strong statement. And not true according to YOUR criteria, Mike... this song doesn't age very well with me at all - I listened to it about 3 times and now I can't listen to it anymore. I think Rush may be becoming my new favourite band, because their songs age much better than DT's... and I've been listening to DT for so long now...

    Hi...

I got this nice sensation... the chorus of YNM won't leave my head... I usually hate it when that happens, because 9 out of 10 times it's something I heard on the radio that gets stuck and I can't think of anything else... but it's a lot nicer when that happens to DT. Some other DT songs did that to me in the past, actually almost any in IaW can have that effect. I think the new song is still aging pretty well in my head. God, I love those harmonies. SOme CNG@tcco.com dude said that he saw in Guitar Player that Kip Winger blamed Beavis and Butthead for their downfall... it was Reb Beach, not Kip Winger, but I'm sure Kip could have said the same. And Eckie... they're gonna substitute Beavis and Butthead for The Real World Part 999. The cast is gonna be a raver, Kim Thayl (you were wondering what he was gonna do now), Hannibal Lechter, Margareth Tatcher, the Spice Girls and an ytsejammer. Who do you think Hannibal will eat first? Ack. Enough of NDTC :-) It's all about yoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooou... not meah.....

The only problem is that since there are not "affinity groups" (like on PlanetAll), you have to search for each person you want to add individually. Plus, I would think it would get a bit unwieldy if you had an ICQ menu with 100 people in it. :)

I know much has been said 'bout that, but I'd like to add my $.02. I use Mediamatics MPEG for Windows, and it works fine (you can get it at www.mediamtics.com , I think). Taking a look at www.mpe3.com can help, they have lots of links there. I also use MPG123 for Linux, and it works really well. If you have any Unix system, get this (the link is at www.mpeg3.com ).
