Oh, so I should just like everything a band does and not have personal tastes? What am I, a sheep? I mean I only have I&W and I love it and everything else DT has ever done has sucked raw, but yeah I'm a DT fan! :)

Yeah, the dudes in Fates are way cool... they don't usually say much... pretty quiet guys, but they're extremely cool... except for Joe DiBiase, he was the most outgoing... but he's not in the band anymore...

...And the worst summer ever continues in full swing.

Not only did my CDR drive fail, which I can at least replace (it should arrive sometime before the next century if the UPS strike ever ends) but I'm finding that about the last 200 discs I made before the failure are completely unplayable. These batches are predominantly comprised of Virtual Songs CDs.

If you find yourself in possession of one of these duds, there's not a lot you can do except send it back to me for a free replacement. I offer my sincerest apologies here, although I don't know that they mean anything because this entire thing has little to do with me OR the shipping process. :(

I stand to lose approximately $2,000 through this unwanted ordeal, and though this won't halt CD production, it will slow things down horrendously. So please, I absolutely beg you, don't ask when your CD will arrive. I no longer know for certain, and I cannot even honestly estimate. 2 weeks worth of burned discs are faulty, and it will take 2 weeks to replace them, and in the meantime 2 weeks worth of production will not take place, for a net loss of a month's work.

Anyway you already saw the "Mike's sale" post in which I'm basically selling off my worldly possessions to continue making CDs, because it has become my livelihood and I'm not particuarly interested in a career change, despite my ridiculously bad luck lately. I was going to release Mosaic at $20 due to the dropping price of media and the elimination (at many requests) of the CDR labels, and I still intend to at least try to manage that, but I can't say specifically when or how. I will release the tracklisting of Mosaic this week... since my CDR replacement drive is en route, there's not much I can do on this end but create the master discs for the next few releases, and just kick the cat a few times and maybe watch some TV. Arggh.

On the up side, this should not delay the release of Experience to Extremes beyond the original release date. I've got Polt backing me up on this release (thank GOD). And the first batch will ship on the exact day of release, 8/11.

I'm sorry to bear this bad news, and I hope you will all bear with me as I struggle through these catastrophies.

The production is bad on YNM??? You've been sticking your head in my JBL Pro PA Speaker too long... those 4000 watts are eating your ear drums... or you bought your sound card from Swap Meet Louie...

The production is fucking great!! Get a real fucking sound card... then listen to it...

As far as I can tell on this low bandwidth MP3, the production is already better than Awake... this is speaking purely of dynamic range, clearness, etc... if you're saying you don't like the sound... well, that's a whole different story...

This is the whole song (except whatever was edited out, but as >I said, you stuck 7:30-8:00 of Metropolis in there I still wouldn't like it very much)

Yeah I did say that I HAVE NOT heard YNM, obviously you have that disease called 'selective reading' :)

    >I'm no audiophile, but the mixing of the instruments is quite audible >regardless of the quality of the recording. After all, the source of >this recording was the CD. Also, while the tone is less crisp than on >the CD, I can clearly hear that Derek is not very prominent in the mix, >MP's snare is too loud, and that I don't like the way JP's guitar >sounds.

Yeah whatever, still dosen't have CD quality though.

    >Anyway, if you're saying that I can't judge the production because I'm listening to it as >an MP3... then by the same token are you going to say that people who buy the album on >casette (let's just assume people do) >can't give a sensible opinion on the production, because it's not as >high quality as the CD?

Oh no I am not, twist words which ever way you like mate...... It's just the same to say, if you listen on your $50 portable rockbox at work then take the CD home and play it on your $2000 Marantz system. Of course there going to sound different. I bought the 'Dance Of Eternity' boot a few years ago, I thought it sounded average at best on my shitty sony midi system, last night I put it in the CD player of my recently purchased Marantz system and now I have a totally different and much higher opinion of the album.

No offence Lars, just a difference of opinion, we're all entitled to them, as I have said twice already wait untill September 23rd before you crucify the band and producer.

    Not long now...

Why it is I walk into a music store and find used Dream Theater CD's....

Some poor fool must've turned on the radio once upon a time and heard "The Silent Man" and thought "Whoa, this is a smokin' REM kinda band! Acoustic guitars rule!" and bought it...not expecting that mind-blowing ton of triplet crashes in the song following it.

Or another person heard "Another Day" and thought, "Wow! A saxaphone player too? Must be a contemporary adult band or something...I should get it for the office...." and didn't quite get it when he put in the disc 'n heard Take the Time rattle out of his his $2 stereo system.

Why there are used Change of Seasonings CD's for sale, I'll never understand...I like that song about 10X more than APSoGgy.

On another note, I have another grand puba god of the albums in my collection: Savatage's Edge of Thorns! If you're on this list and STILL haven't bought it (I think I'm tha last one tho...) you're REALLY missing out on some great music.

Fates Warning's comprised of great people. If the singer was willing to light a fan's cigarette during the show, I'm pretty fuckin' sure he'll sign your CD covers. :) Actually, after the Phoenix concert ended, the tour bus was sitting outside of the club (funny, the tour bus was much larger than the club itself) and they were signing autographs there.

Oh, and finally, I just bought BLOOD. Not the most technologically advanced 3D shooter (ala Quake), but definitely one of the best! I like this one more than Duke Nukem 3D actually....heh. "I have a doll with needles 'n I'm wishin' you were dead..." The TON vid kicks ASS too!

I just want to ask anyone who knows:

Did they let Desmond Child have any of his cheesy input on any other songs? I sure hope not. I haven't heard YNM, but I can tell you that everything I've ever heard from this Child fella in the past has been incredibly lame. Very slick bubble gum pop-type stuff. Yuck. He probably talked KJLB into wearing leather pants again. The bastard!

Seriously though: Something tells me the song is actually pretty decent. I've loved all their other stuff so far. In fact, I've heard seven new songs (not the album versions obviously) and they're all great. A few of them are BRILLIANT. I know that I will be in pretty good shape on September 23: headphones on, lyrics in front of me, jaw dropping, mind blowing up!

Take it easy everyone. Let's all relax a little bit. -Jon Dery

Wait, that happened already.

Everyone who might have skipped this the first time it came through, read it now <sorry, skadz, to repost something for no onther reason than that, but it bore repeating>. John<McCabe>'s right. This IS the album that will decide some things for DT. I don't know if this was the point you were trying to make, John, but if this is how they need to hold on to their label, well, alright then.

    I haven't heard YNM.

To us, they're Dream Theater. To them, they are Dream Theater but only to a certain extent. Otherwise, they're just John Petrucci and Mike Portnoy and etc., etc., and they have wives and kids and they need to make a living. If they decide that they can do this by going for a more "radio-friendly" sound, then so be it.

I'd like to hand all the nay-sayers out there a recording contract on a major label, then threaten to take it away from them if they didn't make more money and see what they would do.

..and all you wise-guys who say you'll walk in order to salvage your great artistic integrity, I'll...I'll...I'll flatten you like a pucking fancake! :)

    > Could someone tell me who this Desmond Child guy is? What songs or bands > was he in, in the past?

As for what band, I don't know any. I think he co-wrote a lot of bon Jovi songs during their heyday <You Give Love a Bad Name, I think> as well as, I think, Joan Jett's "I Love Rock 'n Roll" and "I Hate Myself for Loving You."

Ok, Have any of you cavemen heard the other songs? Well let's break it down shall we. Burning My Soul I think it's great. Better than great it's da bomb! It's got a real smooth heavyness about it. "Oooooo but the middle part is gone now it sucks" Hmm wake up! When the song ends listen to the middle then or is that too hard for ya caveman. So all in all I'd have to say Burning My Sould is good right? I think many of you would agree. Next Just Let Me Breathe. Ok another good song with a killer prog middle part. I like this song alot it's pretty cool right? "but what about YNM I mean it can't be good cuz YNM suck's and there sell outs now". Wake up cavemen. Next....Let me see Lines In The Sand. Well basically the whole song is there all 12 min minutes except the first 1 min keyboard part and what do I think of this song. I'd have to say that it's pretty close to the best they have ever been. This or LTL. I also think many of you would agree with me right? I mean the song is just well what you would expect. "but YNM is muddy and stuff and the album will suck because of that Kevin guy" wake up cavemen! Next hmmm we got Peruvian Skies. This song is just BLISS! melodic hard and happenin with much prog and craft to it. It's even longer than the demo version nothins cut. I think many of you would agree right? I think so. "But there doing a 180 and well they need to make money and ummmm well thats what MP said" Wake Up CAVEMEN! Fellow Jammers I could go on and on about this whole thing. My point is screw this little song that came out ok just forget about it. If you hairy wooly apes just had any and I mean any common sence there is no reason in the world for you to think this next CD will not be up to par. I mean as far as Prog and Emotion and Melodies whatever... so again I must feel sorry for alot of you and hope you do evolve in the next few months cuz this CD is going to rock I promise you that. So please shut the pie holes Jon
