Well, I love John Myung's bass sound, and the chorus is good... but
otherwise... well, no comment. <sigh> At least this will probably get
them some airplay though - this is by far the most repetitive DT song
I've heard. If songs like this help to score DT some commercial
success, then I"ll glady live with them. I just hope the >10 minute
songs are more prog than this.

Hey, is this SLY "Strapping Young Lads"?? Well, I saw the video
for "Detox" (is it the name of the album or of the song?? I can't
remember) and it seems really nice for headbanging... Man, I didn't hear
anything like this since Metallica's "Blackened"...

It's a bit noisy and a bit industrial, but it's interesting.

    Yeah!!

The moment you've been waiting for: The first Shirley-sucks post. Ok, maybe it wasn't *his* fault, but I need a scapegoat now!

Why? I just heard the MP3 of "You Not Me" and it sucks. I'm not one of the progressive-hardliners who can't stand simple songs or something. It's because they totally ruined a potential hit-single!

Maybe some of you remember or even recorded the demo version during one of the clinics some time ago. Listen to this "old" version again, then to the studio version, and hear the difference. The original version was a kick-ass, groovy, heavy song. But now, the radio-samples which gave the song this cool industrial-touch, the simple but fitting singalong-chorus, all gone. Instead they did it again, inserted a boring standard chorus that doesn't match the rest of the song at all. (Listen to the different keys! Sounds like another song!)

Wake up, you listen to the chorus when you hear a song in the radio. But no one will care for a whimpy chorus like this! Maybe they want to stay under- ground?

Ok, maybe I'm wrong, maybe Kevin Shirley is the master of puppets and knows how to feed the masses, and I'm just one of those fans he said he didn't want to make this album for.

But I think the demo version was more catchy, heavy, accessible, and coherent. The song still has some strong moments, but the studio version sounds more like an early demo as the demo itself.

DISCLAIMER: This is my very humble opinion, so please don't feel offended. I never said you suck because you possibly like this song. It's not the song itself that sucks, either. It's just this VERY strange and weak version. I just want to know WHAT HAPPENED!

Now I don't DARE to imagine what happened to masterpieces like Lines...

    Shocked,

    hello.

Just thought I'd do a quick review of the Fates Warning gig August 3 at Shanahan's in Lafayette, La.

    WHOA!

Starting at the beginning, a few friends and I loaded up to go down to Lafayette and find Shanahan's. After driving there we came upon a little club that turned out to be Shanahan's. Not a very fancy place. We saw a dude on the phone(who turned out to be the keyboardist Ed Roth) but the parking lot was empty so we went and got some grub and got back to the club, where a small group of fans had gathered at the bar while Fates were in the playing area doing a sound check. I was actually kind of bummed at first because they were doing APSoG pt 7 and I thought I'd missed half the show. But no...they left the stage and Queensryche "Promised Land" played for a little while.

No opening band and Fates came on at around 10. The crowd was not very big but the club itself wasn't big so it was pretty full. There were actually A LOT more people there that knew fates than I expected. I fully expected there being my friends and I and the regular few people who hang out at these shows but there were people there into Fates. Pretty cool.

Anyway, the show....It was GREAT! The setlist was (and I know this has been posted before but there was some questioning so I'll post it again: 1)APSoG 2)Life in Still Water 3)Face the Fear 4)Monument 5)11th Hour 6)We only say goodbye

Ray Alder said after APSoG that they usually leave and come back for encore but the place had nowhere for them to go so they'd just stay up there and play. And play did they....whoa. Mark Zonder is something to watch. People were yelling "MARK ZONDER IS GOD!!" "MARK ZONDER!!!" and stuff all night. Ray's voice was great too. He hit some HIGH notes and sounded pretty good for most of the show. He even jumped off stage and stood by us while trying to get Joey Vera's attention acting like a fan. The songs were pretty faithful to the recorded versions. Frank Aresti's solos were generally replaced by Keyboard solos which I thought were ok but one of my guitar player friends didn't like. Bass was really good and he had some nice backing vocals too. Small stage for them so it didn't allow them to move around much. Really cool band and a cool show. Man, I can't get over the fact that they actually came to Louisiana! I had my doubts all the way up until I saw them jamming on stage. They didn't have any shirts or anything like that for sale. The crowd was really into the show (watching in amazement at Mark Zonder a lot of times) and it was something to remember. Now i need to see DT live...

Next week: QUEENSRYCHE! September - STRAPPING YOUNG LAD!!! (and testament too)

    Hi

My english is not good :-)))))

DT have cut one of their best song's "Burning My Soul" ?!?!?

I'm new in this list. Have DT Cut any other song as well ?

Now I don't like MP anymore.

On the IRC Chat he said, they have only major changes on "Lines In The Sand".

    He is really a liar.

MP always says that, DT are against confirmity. DT do what only they like.

Ha ha ha. In 97 they only do what the producer and the record company want.

Cuts here cuts there, commerical Ballads and ....

MP also said : "Kevin (the shit main stream producer) is the right man for us.

Maybe he should work with DAVID FOSTER to have only 3 min Radio Hit and shits

    like that.

How could they cut the best part of the song ? It's really a shame.

Are you agree with me ?

We should maybe sign a petition for the band to record the complete 9 min

    of "Burning My Soul".

I'm really a big Dream Theater fan but I think in 1997, as the best Prog

band in the world, DT (specially MP) are in a worng way.

*cackle* Oh boy, am I glad I missed out on getting a good listen to the original demos/bootlegs? *boggle* Anyhoo, the album's not out yet, and yer callin' it sell-out trash, eh? I've heard (over the phone, through a computer file, yech) the mp file, and I thought it rocked...despite the very low sound quality. What shocked me the most were the vocals...they didn't sound anything like Awake or Images and Words! I thought some insane ytsejammer might have gone 'n assassinated James 'n gotten a replacement...but it kicked ass! I still need to listen to the full song though. I wonder who the stuffy posh voice belonged to "This is Dream Theater's first release in 10 years...."

    Yo!

I just heard You Not Me from the Swifty site, thanks to the tip by Dr. Mosh. It's an awesome song. The guitar is kinda back in the mix - drums and bass up front (I should say snare and bass), but I know I'll be able to tell all the sounds when the CD comes out. I love the harmonies. I think they're at least as good as the ones in To Live Forever (hmm I wonder if Merlo thinks the same thing). But you know what it reminds me of? Some Journey, of course, but mainly 80s Kansas, like "Play the Game Tonight" - the chord progression in the chorus is very similar in both songs. Of course, I love Kansas, so it's a good thing :) Overal I think it sounds like an 80s song, without all those reverbs and processors and eletronic sounds that were popular at that time. Or you could see it as just a great song =] Can't wait to hear the real thing, and all the other songs! This is gonna be so cool!

    ~KillMary

Now playing in my 25 CD changer... nah I'm not gonna type all that. And you don't care anyway! But I'm listening to Bruce Dickinson's Accident of Birth.

Alright... for all of you having troubles...

You CANNOT play MPEG 1 Layer 3 files through a normal MPEG player like Streamworks or the sort... you need to download an MP3 player.

You can get WinAMP from the following address... this is in my opinion the best MP3 player, but be forewarned, if you're not running a Pentium 100 at least, forget it, this program is very CPU and GUI intensive, you may experience skipping and clipping if your machine is not fast enough.

    WinAMP: http://winamp.lh.net

Also! You can get WinPlay which is more efficient, but not as fancy.

    WinPlay sources:

    www.mpeg3.com

If you have ANY problems... DO *NOT* e-mail me... I will probably ignore you... I ain't tech support... send e-mail to Chris Merlo if you have a question... hahahahah

There are players available for Linux and other versions of Unix on various sites... don't ask where... :P
