         Hi,

Ok, I wasn't going to post but just like everyone else I have to say
some stuff here. I finally listened to it and I like it..

         NO STOP - DON'T SKIP.

Ok, those still with me - I think the production sounds good, the
bass and drums are in your face which can't be a bad thing and I can
here everything else just fine. For those people bleating about
selling out - just go and listen to it again - check out the riff just
after the first chorus. Listen to the heavy guitar, the cool
descending keyboards backing it up - quite bold for a "commercial"
track. I get the impression that this is as commercial as there gonna
get - I also think that this is the song that kept "Where Are You Now"
off the album (correct me if I'm wrong MP - private Email?).

Also listen to the drums - if this was out-and-out commercial we
would be listening to a straight 4-4, but listen to them (yes it's
still essentially 4-4 but...) they are more syncopated than a
syncopated thing - again quite bold!

           Nuff said...

           I'm thinking about getting a 4-track porta-studio (probably the
Yamaha MT50 - that's as much as I can afford) - any advice?

         Cheers,

            Dave (a UK Jammer).

In order for this analogy to work, wouldn't the members of DT have to
dislike music? Or did I just miss something?

Hi (again), It's interesting that Steffen mentioned U2 because, when I heard the "It's alright, it's OK" bit in YNM (I think that's the lyric - oh shit, a spoiler) I thought JLB was gonna say "She moves in mysterious ways...". Boy am I gonna get flamed... Also (please don't hunt me down like a dog...) I've always thought that "Lifting Shadows" leant towards a U2-ish sound. Just my thoughts, Dave (a UK Jammer).

And I'm damn glad to be reporting it, given what's happened lately.

Well, Chung Ng the awesome Ytsejammer is now the owner of my Playstation, I find myself owning distinctly fewer Magic cards, and I'm negotiating deals on the Star Wars and SNES stuff, and on the up side..

...my new CD burner arrives Friday. 8x read, 4x write. Instead of struggling with the ol' doublespeed, I'll be naked, clueless, and fe-e-e-eling good. (Anyone who knows where that quote came from deserves a free drink). And it only costed me a crushing $880. Ah well. It happens. The sales more or less covered the cost of the unit, and the speed means I won't lose as much shipping productivity as I thought.

Now on to the semi-bad news. In a way, I can honestly say the CD burner thing hasn't affected shipping AT ALL. This is because, thanks to the UPS strike, the Post Office is limiting everyone to four outgoing parcels per day. Since Melissa and I team up, that makes eight. So far over the past few days, every day it's been eight videotape packets from Melissa's projects, and she's still got more to send!! Ironically, once I get the 4x burner, I'll be making CDs WAY faster than I can send them. Hopefully UPS will get it together. I will be more careful than ever to include as much stuff in single packets as possible at a time. So to those concerned about their packages... I can honestly say they're gonna get there as soon as possible. :)

Ironic sidenote: I'm moving again. Lease ends in 2 months and this apartment complex is mediocre at best. I'll be staying in Gilbert, though, and also forwarding mail and phone, so the transition should be fairly seamless for the most part. Expect it in November or thereabouts. Finally I get to move into a house... rented, but what can you say. Finally I'll have a decent-sized office to work in. About damn time. :)

Since my main PC isn't making CDs at the moment, I've taken the time to appreciate the various arcade, SNES, NES, and related emulators available on the web. Imagine my delight that SNES97, the PC SNES emulator, is compatible with the ROMs I copy with my Super UFO SNES console copier! These programs are very well made... especially Multi Arcade Machine and NESticle (what a name). These programmers should be working for the biggies, not making PD stuff at $10 per reg. I highly recommend any of you who like video games to check this stuff out. I've been loving every minute of playing the original arcade versions of Tempest, Black Tiger, Galaga, Stargate, and Joust, as well as enjoying everything the home systems have to offer.

    - Mike Bahr - durnik@goodnet.com - http://www.goodnet.com/~durnik

A final P.S. I don't know if I mentioned it before on the Jam, but one of my customers made a hardware (storage) donation a while back and I'm fairly sure he wishes to remain anonymous, however this is my strange and probably insufficient attempt to give him some of the gratitude he deserves in a public forum. So to you, mr. X, thanks VERY much!!

I don't mind you bitching at me, but get it right, Itch. :)

Hey, that's why I call this the BitchyJam - if we didn't have something to complain about, we wouldn't be happy.

Now a little DT content. Is it just me, or is JP getting more and more into the wah pedal? If you look at the progression -

WDADU - very little, and not real noticeable. I&W - a bit more, but mainly using it set in one position - maybe these two are using EQ to make it sound like a 'half - cocked wah'. (Yeesh - I'm setting myself up with that statement!) Awake - Wah solos are _very_ conspicuous - maybe because he got the rack wah? ACOS and YNM - Wah used conspicuously in the rhythm parts of the song.

I'm not saying this is a bad thing, just something I've noticed.

it goes both ways.....you haven't heard the CD yet....you haven't heard the final song versions, you haven't heard the production, and to say that this will be your favorite album of all time, based only on past liking for DT and earlier rough versions you may have heard is as ridiculous as saying DT has sold out and Kevin Shirley stinks on the basis of one compressed computer file.........

frankly, i'm not sure what bugs me worse, folks panning DT based on 4 out of 80 minutes, or total blind obedience (oh, it's gonna be good. How do i know>? It's DT....It's gonna be my favorite album of all time!)

Those of you who have been on the jam for over a year might remember an ambitious nut-brained guy who started a guitar transcription of ACOS project but never finished it. That nut-brained person would be me. I must apologize for disappearing on those who were working on it with me. During the past year I have:

changed jobs twice, moved twice, crashed my computer twice, (man I don't like the number 2!) . . .

But I guess the real reason I dropped from sight is that Warner Bros. threatened to sue me if I distributed the finished product. Go figure...they have the rights to the music...are never going to publish the song...yet if anybody transcribes it (even though they _do not_ sell it), they sue. We live in a messed up world.

Anyway, I want to finish this project. I know from reading the Jam that about 3-4 other people are working on this (and maybe even finished it). If that is the case, please let me know. I have 100% of the guitar and bass worked out -- about 30-40% input into the computer (guitar only).

If anybody who worked on the original project wants back in to help me finish this, please email me at vaughn_b@popmail.firn.edu ( bvaughn@snowhill.com from Aug. 7-18). If any of you who have been transcribing it want to help out or send me what you have, please let me know.

Here are my tentative plans for this project:

    By: Accomplished:

August 18 ASCII Tab for guitar of complete song MIDI file of the complete song to practice with

Aug. 18 -- Sept. 1 Revisions and corrections of TAB by fellow Jammers

Sept. 1 Decent graphical copy of guitar TAB ASCII Bass Tab part of complete song

Sept. 1 -- 23 Revisions and corrections of bass TAB

Sept. 23 :) Production quality guitar and bass TAB Revisions to MIDI file

Of course, you keyboardists and drummers would best be serviced by getting the MIDI file and some MIDI player with notation ability to get those parts.

I originally was going to make the MIDI file from scratch, but Mark Peters has been working on this and doing a good job ( http://www.auburn.net/~swifty/dt.html ). I was going to help him complete it, or revise his finished project according to the transcription.

Alas, the threat of Warner still looms in my mind. The only solution I have is that I will have no names on the transcription (at least not mine). This is a shame due to the different workers involved. If anyone has any suggestions about how to handle this, let me know. Part of me says they will never find out, but then again . . . I may have several people serve as points by which to get the files. Yet, anybody who would want a production quality guitar and bass TAB would have to get that direct from me (for reimbursement cost). I am still hoping to be able to get a production quality TAB with musical notes. That is still pending.

If I get real brave, I'll even send a copy to Petrucci. (He knows we were working on it, and seemed flattered at the time.)

Finally, I am looking for somebody with some web space for DT to work with me in putting up some revised MIDI and TAB files of DT. The TAB files would mostly be those songs _not_ published by Warner (ACOS, new projects of WDADU, Bombay Vindaloo, etc). Let me know if anyone is interested.

    Thanks!

    Brandon Vaughn vaughn_b@popmail.firn.edu ( bvaughn@snowhill.com from Aug. 7-18).

I've got a question for you all.

What are the best car cd changers from your experience? My wife wants one for her car. I've got a JVC 12 disc changer in my car but I'll never get one again. I've had too many problems with the JVC. Problems like the cartridge locking up. (The last time my QR PL and my Jason Becker Perspectives got abused but luckily they play without skipping). Other problems include the changer getting confused and skipping cds so that the only way to play the skipped cd is to pop the cartridge and put it back in.
