    Hey peoples.
    Two things:

    1) Desmond Child, for those of you who are wondering, has written songs
for EVERYONE. A few years ago, he decided to put out a CD of all these
songs that he helped write for people and give it to them all for
Christmas. The CD had something like a 36-song tracklist with no
duplicate artists, and they were all HUGE names, like Bon Jovi, Madonna,
Cher, Michael Bolton (gag), etc. Maybe people here don't like him, but
the man knows his shit about writing pop songs.

    2) I listened to YNM last night on my shittier-than-thou machine, and I
really don't see what all the fuss is about, apart from the annoying
guitar tone in the beginning (I'm not a fan of the wah, though, so
that's just IMHO). I can't really comment on the production of it,
because my computer is so old it could barely run the thing, much less
handle it in stereo (and it still skipped) and my soundcard blows dogs,
but my general gist of it, not having heard ANY of the Fix for 96 stuff,
is that a) Kevin Shirley didn't do that bad a job; b) as a bass player,
I'm dick-so-hard that I can hear Myung; and c) DT wrote a SONG.

Let me say that again. Dream Theater wrote a SONG. ***What is so wrong
    with that***?

(/me adds heat sinks to his computer in anticipation of the flames to
    come)

No kidding! He is like the male counterpart to Diane Warren.
He put out a solo cd a few years back, as well. Too bad he didn't save
    his
best songs for his own cd.

I'm so tired of people using this as an argument. "Can you do a better job?" It's not relevant whether I can or can't, because I'm not a producer.

In a similar situation on a metal list, I was slamming Dokken's new album, and stating that I think I would have rather seen them stay broken up, because in the last 3 years, they haven't really done anything but tarnish the image I had of them as an awesome 80's metal band. So some guy writes a 3 page public disertation on how I can't do any better than Dokken. So I told the guy that the next time I saw Dokken, I would wait after the show to meet Don Dokken, and tell him, "You know Don, your new album Shadowlife is by far the worst album Dokken has released, it pales in comparison to other new albums such as Dickinson's AOB, WASP's KFD, Megadeth's CW, Slaughter's new one; but you know many people have said that it's way better than anything I've ever written, so you can rest easy." What kind of complement is it to say that Dokken's new material is better than anything that Kai fellow has released?

As fans, it is our job to critique, but it is not our job to do a better job. If the production sucks (and I'm not saying it does, because I haven't heard the album, and I wouldn't begin to form a production opinion based on an MP3), it is our job to say it sucks. And you don't have to back it up by producing a better album. Simply compare it to an album with better production.

Actually, no. I love the original version as much, if not more than the DT version. I really like the way DT pulled this song off, but mostly because of it's closeness to the original. Elton John is a musical genius, and Love Lies Bleeding kicks my ass.

Well, I was trying to get across(very poorly, I know) is that this is the album we'll look back upon in 5, or 10, or ZILLION(that's one day) years and say this was the break through album. Hopefully. :) I mean DT is trying out all these new things, and I'm really excited about it. But, people will take my view in different ways. Hehe, don't I sound like those snob type musicians who never tell you what a certain song is about. Oh no, MP don't read that! ;-) > I haven't heard YNM.

Hmm, maybe we should start a poll of who has and hasn't heard YNM. :)

Are you referring to my post? If you are I'll repeat what I was *trying* to say. Maybe I should say this three times. (j/k) I meant that DT is going to do some new stuff. Some prog stuff, some metal stuff, some simple stuff, some production stuff, some new instrument stuff, etc. I meant the 180 degree thing as this is going to hopefully be the album where we(the fans) will look back and say "Oasis sucks," or "I still hate MTV," or even "This is DT best album." Shit I forget the IMO. :) ___ > From: "S. Borzilleri" <magellan@u.washington.edu> > Subject: Basching, Holes, Tattooes

I'm posting my response to this on the jam for all you newbies out there. Anything directed at Chris P. with fuck or asshole, will either be one of two things. The other being Chris is going to make someone look like a complete fool! :) And I'll give the answer to the above example. One. :)

Ya know, I just realized something looking at todays jams..

As in the old plethora of "Another ???" titles, I think it's odd that DT = has a song called "Just let me breathe" when Take the Time's first line = is "Just let me catch my breath." =20

Anyways, that's a whole 2 cents. The new single still kicks ass. =20

hehe ...and the chorus says something to the effect of "open your eyes you can find all you need in your mind." or something like that.... but its very similar to TTT i mean.. to "close your eyes you can find all you need in your mind"

nothing like DTC to start the jam's fire-breathing machinery up again....knew the peace wouldn't last

About the subject, shut up already, I ain't talking about YNM, ain't heard it yet, not sure I want to.....I went through that hearing stuff before its released with test for echo last year, "knew" every song for a whole two weeks at least before it was released, thanks to the various .wavs flying around, and then I got the album and realized I didn't catch anything of the nuances that were in every song.......

I understand fully that folks like to think that they CAN tell everything about a song from a compressed file sputtering out of computer speakers. what sucks is that they extend those feelings to an entire album of totally unheard material, and expose us to that 'negative vibe' (oooooh. I'm getting really new Age-y here.....better reach for your crystals).......what makes it worse is those folks too damn willing to jump over anybody who offers a negative opinion.....whether they're commenting on just the single song ynm (which any listener is entitled to do!) or extrapolating their feelings to the entire (unheard as of yet) album.....

no there's no point to this post, I was just musing along, and i happened to have my e-mail open, and besides I haven't been well-burnt in a while, thought I might as well expose myself......waitasec.....that could land me in jail....never mind, I'll keep that part to myself.....

coupla thoughts.....I thought Desmond Child WAS in Bon Jovi? lessee, Jon bon jovi, Tico Torres (i think that's his name), richie sambora....forget the last two, but I thought one was Child.....

Ernie: about www.Dreamtheater.com......i mentioned it last year.....they used to have this WICKED looking dragon creature thing on its opening page....looks like that company is starting to do well.....

Just thought I'd ask again (I'm kind of nervous):

Did DC have ANY input on ANY other songs? It always bothers me when bands work with outside songwriters (Phish does it for example), but when I hear that DT has, It makes me very dissapointed. Music is the communication of emotion. Desmond Child's emotion is not relevant to DT fans- DT's is.

Again, I have not heard You Not Me. I'm sure it is not all that bad, but I want to hear Dream Theater's music not some other Joe's.

I'm just worried that he worked on other songs too. Nobody knows? Mike Bahr?!

That's pretty open minded of you. :) Desmond Child, like him or not, has his finger on the pulse of contemporary pop songwriting. He has been able to extend this into several genre's of music. I'm not a huge fan of his (I used to be, but I haven't been listening to anything he's been involved with for a long time) but I know that what he writes does NOT always sound the same. You're judging a book by its cover. And the cover says Dream Theater, so you'd better read through chapter 2112 by friday or you've got detention. I thought Bahr or someone else said that DT scrapped almost all of his changes anyways. Face it. It's possible for you (in general... not you Jon) to dislike a DT song. It's possible for DT to go in a direction you don't like. It's unacceptable for you to act like they're doing this to fuck you over... it's THEIR music... let them be themselves. If they bent to your suggestions, that would be no better then selling out to a record company. You wouldn't like DT if they played what people demanded. They have to play what they feel. > From: "S.
