All I meant is that one's first impression of a new song can change with

Presently, I think LIE is a great song.

Anyways, what's with the new Crimson Glory album?
It was supposed to be out in May. What's going on?
There are 1000 people on this list, someone must know!

Does anyone have news on Vauxdvihl's new one, "ALIENATION"?

Does anyone out there in Ytse-Land know where I can download a scan of
the Mike Portnoy/TAMA ad from several past issues of Modern Drummer? I
have the actual ad pinned up at my desk at work (which got a compliment

a .jpg or .bmp. Any ideas? Also, does anybody know if TAMA has a
working homepage or not? I am a TAMA-owner myself and have been looking
for their homepage for a couple of years now. Am I just looking in the
    wrong places?

Please E-mail any suggestions or ideas to me personally -- thanx!

This is my first post. I saw Fates Warning last night and, only one thing comes to mind....Ray Alder. O.K. the rest of the band was excellent too. I have never seen a tighter band. How can you screw up when you have a drummer as good as Mark Zonder? The keyboardist could've been better. Did anyone else noticed that he was faking the fast piano piece on parts seven and eight? It was actually sequenced. The piece started before he did. Did I mention that Ray Alder is the man?

Divine Regal was really good too. Excellent prog band. They seemed to be very young. The vocalist sounded alot like Midnight from Crimson Glory. Their drummer was really solid, and sang excellent back up vocals.

All I can say is that FII will be Dream Theater and that's all we have to know. You know there is a variety of songs on every album DT put out. Let's see : WDADU: Status Seeker ... cool tune, like Another Day from I&W Afterlife ... metal song like Pull me under I&W OAMOT ... progressive at it's best I&W : Take the time ... progressive Learning to live even more prog Metropolis pt. I an epic Surrounded (my favourite) Another Day ... mainstrean commercial (hehe flame me :)) AWAKE: The Silent Man ... great balad mainstream commercial The Mirror ... heavy, groovy, has a great piece following Lie succesor to The Mirror ... also heavy LSOAD ... great harmonies, great guitar, everything 6:00 The first time I really listened to DT was this piece and it knocked of my feet ... ACOS: Also en epic As you can see, there's something for everyone on all albums, it's just what you prefer. As far as production goes, I would say, that the best production was on ACOS, followed by AWAKE, while it could have been better on I&W if David Prater would let the band to get some word in it...

hey, what's up all? I'm still recovering from Thursday's Fates concert that I went to in Jersey and yes Fatez was awesome, but I'm not recovering from Fates. I'm actually recovering from listening to the greatest opening band that I ever heard opening for a group! The name of the group is called Divine Regale! I totally loved them and instantly went out and bought an album from tehm. Just before I checked the web and actually found some info about them. I'm just copying and ppasting exactly what I saw on this page about Divine Regale. I definitely think this will interest you guys.

    Divine Regale

    Ocean Mind Metal Blade Records

Following in the footsteps of bands such as Fates Warning and Dream Theater, comes another "progressive rock" band - Divine Regale from Dover, NH. In fact, "Ocean Mind", this sextet's major label debut, sounds a lot like that first Dream Theater album: melodic, musically complex numbers emphasizing both guitar and keyboard leads and "deep" introspective lyrics sung by a vocalist who sounds a good bit like Geddy Lee at times. In fact, a lot of influences can easily be picked out of the band's music. The title track brings to mind an image of Rush, Dream Theater and Styx all rolled into one, while singer Dwight Hill does his best impression of a "Warning"-era Geoff Tate in the beginning of "Shadowed Words Forgotten".

This is not to say that Divine Regale is completely derivative. On the contrary, there's a lot of great hooks and intriguing songs on this album. Also, unlike many other bands in their genre, they seem secure enough in their musical abilities that they do not feel compelled to show off by instrumentally meandering about for what can seem like forever; they say their what they have to say and then move on to the next song. In fact, with the exception of the disc's closer, "Forever Changing Winds", all of the tracks clock in at six minutes or less, something which does not currently seem to be en vogue with progressive bands these days. Granted, the band still has a way to go towards playing down the influences somewhat and developing a sound that is more of their own, but for a debut release, this disc is pretty f***ing impressive.

In short, if you're a fan of bands like Fates Warning, Mercury Rising, Rush, etc., this is a disc that will probably be a welcome addition to your collection.

see what I mean guys? I have no idea where I took that from, but it was something that I found on the web and for anyone that had yet to hear these guys, I totally recommend you to check out a Fatez show where I think they're opening still or just buy their stuff and hear for yourself. I know that I'm happy that I did. :)

I had second thoughts about answering this but here goes:

I said: > "All the new stuff I have heard is quite superb and varied as usual and > I have no doubts it will rival I&W as my all time Fav CD."

    You replied:

"it goes both ways.....you haven't heard the CD yet....you haven't heard the final song versions, you haven't heard the production, and to say that this will be your favorite album of all time, based only on past liking for DT and earlier rough versions you may have heard is as ridiculous as saying DT has sold out and Kevin Shirley stinks on the basis of one compressed computer file.........

frankly, i'm not sure what bugs me worse, folks panning DT based on 4 out of 80 minutes, or total blind obedience (oh, it's gonna be good. How do i know>? It's DT....It's gonna be my favorite album of all time!)"

I cant believe some of the negative-minded attitudes on this mailing list. I said it would rival I&W on what I had heard. Fair enough things might change from the Fix shows but Shirley would have to rival Genghis Khan as a butcher to ruin the new material and I am basing MY opinion on substantially more I.e. 6 songs (albeit not the finished versions) than the majority complaining about YNM who have heard only this song and have decided to judge the whole CD on one song. If Kevin Shirley and the band do ruin things then I will personally e-mail you and tell you I was mistaken but DT have earned what in business terms is called "Goodwill" from me. I have followed them since '89 and nothing they have produced so far has dissapointed me therefore I have no reason to think they will dissapoint me in the future. They are one of the few bands whose new CD I would buy even if I was yet to hear anything off it (amongst these are Kings X and Spock's Beard) - reputations do count for me - these bands have earned my respect and support, I aren't a fickle person. This Partha is called LOYALTY not blind obedience. This is where you get hypocritical, you accuse me of making assumptions about the new CD and then YOU yourself make assumptions about me - I.e. That I follow DT blindly and obediently - when you dont even know me. However if DT let me down (Like IMHO the last Rush and Queensryche CD's let me down) they would lose some "Goodwill" and I would reserve my judgement and not buy any future CD's until I had heard something of them. I am (In my mind rightly so) excited about the prospect of the new CD, hope it will be their best and I make no apologies for that. I always hope that when any band I like bring out a new CD it will be their best. This is called positive thinking. If this offends you Partha I'm sorry, go and sit in a corner and have a moan and perhaps dont buy the CD for fear of being classed as blindly obedient. Like Itchy has said there seem to be a few people on the Jam who are waiting for DT to make one false move so that they can whine and bitch. This is really sad considering I thought this mailing list was supposedly made up of some of the more "hardcore" DT fans.

I certainly know what "...bugs me worse" - it is negative-minded people.

and to all the people who have only listened to YNM 2 or 3 times and written it off all that I can say is that if I had had this attitude then I would never have discovered Rush or Metallica because I disliked both when I first heard them especially "Master of Puppets" which is now one of my all time fav CDs. DT like other types of music which will stand the test of time does not always have an immediate effect on you but can suddenly hit you after 5 or 10 plays. I know a lot of bands I have liked in the past and whose CD's I have liked straight away now sound very dated and down right bad.

1- I just got Cakewalk 5.0 but version 6.0 is already out. Does anyone have the complete program?

2- In my computer sequencer, I filled one measure in 4/4 with 4 quarter notes and one measure in 4/8 with 4 eight notes. When I hit Play (with the tempo set at 100), the notes in the 4/8 measure sound they are half of the lenght of the notes in 4/4. But should all the notes sound they have the same lenght? Isn't 4/4 basically equivalent to 4/8 to the listener?

My question is regarding the Evil Warning EP and the Reaching Horizons CD. First, can somebody send me an exact track listing of both of these? Secondly, does anyone know where I can find a CD of Reaching Horizons? I don't think I've seen this advertised anywhere.

Feel free to e-mail me privately, or if you feel that it is Jam-worthy, feel free to post there. Many thanks in advance for your help!

Two bars of 4/8 will sound just like 1 bar of 4/4 if places in the same tempo. 4 notes in 4/8 equals four eighth notes, and 4 notes in 4/4 equals 4 quarter notes. If you put two 4/8 bars back to back and insert 4 quarter notes, you will get the equivalent of the 4/4 bar. To make a whole note in 4/8, you have to tie two half notes between bars, etc. And you wondered why they made you learn fractions in grade school. :)

    Hello all,

I'm writing with a heavy heart tonight because I've just witnessed one of the lowest points a magnificent band such as FATES WARNING has had to endure. I just saw them at the "Lowdown" (fitting name!) in Mt. Vernon, NY and it was a slap in the face to this band that gives me endless inspiration.

This little hole-in-the-wall piece of shit bar was pathetic! Whatever dumb-ass booked this tour for them should be dragged through the streets in their underwear! (I was later told he was fired by FW)

To begin with, the stage was about a foot (a whopping 12-inches) off the ground, the ceiling was about 15-feet, there was a HUGE friggin' bar right IN FRONT of the so-called "stage" so that there were at most about 20-25 people in front of the stage (basically just standing there since there was practically no stage!) and everyone else had to fill in the sides of the bar and the back..so that there was a huge oval in the middle and all the fans filled in around it...it was ridiculous....and very painful to watch :-(

Gone was all the furious intensity I had when I saw them in CT and NJ...this was just plain sad. People in the bar were being assholes and screaming shit out during the quiet parts (sometimes the bar-crowd was louder than FATES). The PA was a joke; as well as the setup. FATES had to come in the main entrance, down the stairs, and onto the stage in plain view of everyone. They had to have a tech clear away people in the crowd so that they could make it to the stage.

And why the hell does a generic 80's hair band band called "Livesay" (and I thought "Proud Flesh" was a stupid game) get to play for an eternity but DIVINE REGALE plays for just 30-minutes?!?!?! This bar is a worthless piece of monkey-shit......right down to the fucking darts!

I even chatted with the singer, guitarist, and bassist (on separate occasions) for DIVINE REGALE (super nice guys!) telling them I saw them at the previous shows and couldn't believe FW was playing this death-trap bar. Shawn (bassist) was telling me how FW fired their tour manager because of how shitty he set up the whole tour and just in general how upset they were about the whole deal...there was no food before the show etc.. It was a just a sad sight.

I had my video-camera with me so I could finally tape a show the way I wanted to see one..with all the solos zoomed in, etc. Dwight (singer for DR) said he had no problem with it but Jim Matheos would probably have a problem with it. Later on, he actually sought me out in the bar and asked me NOT to tape them because their was no either band would be able to come across good in this hgole-in-the-wall. He'd rather have a good bootleg of them floating around instead of this pathetic place. I agreed so I put my camera back in my car.

All in all, DIVINE REGALE put on a pretty good set and were really cool to talk to. FATES WARNING soldiered on despite the absolutely HORRIBLE conditions. They played great considering the atmosphere but cut the last encore (Face the Fear, We Only Say Goodbye). I mean this place really has to be seen to be believed! Maybe 100 people there tops. DISGRACE!!

Well...there is some more depressing stuff about FATES that the singer from DIVINE REGALE told me but I'm dead tired now and need some sleep so I can recover from one of the most horrific concert experiences of my life :-(

FUCK THE "Lowdown" in Mt. Vernon!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
