    Hey -

    > Well, thanks to Mattew Teiper, I've heard "Tales from the Thousand
    > Lakes", "My Kantele" and "Black Winter Day" (I already had "Elegy"). I
    > think that "Elegy" is as good as "Tales from the Thousand Lakes", but the

Wow! Personal mention in the YtseJam? I gotta call my mom and tell I've
finally hit the big time! :-) BTW, you are quite welcome, Roger. Glad ya
    like it...

    > AMORPHIS RULES!!! Elegy was released May of 96 though man! GET IT! It
    > rivals "Tales..." as the best album. My Kantele is the new EP that was
    > jsut released, so wherever you got that, I am sure you'll find Elegy
    > there.

Absolutely no argument here! This is one AMAZINGLY talented bunch of
musicians. And, what's more, they write killer songs! If you already have
"Tales...", you will freak out at how good "Elegy" is. I know there are some
out there preferable to "Tales", but I think that "Elegy" may be one of the
most perfect albums I own. Well, almost perfect... I wish the growler didn't
make an appearance in the middle of the title track. IMHO, the song is too
godlike to muddy it up with completely undiscernable vocals. However, the
rest of the song is sung, quite well I might add, by the clean vocalist, and
to me, "Elegy" is one of those songs that take me to a new level and make me
all "warm and fuzzy", as was discussed on a thread many moons ago. :-)

All in all... if you haven't checked out Amorphis, I highly recommend it. If
I had to try and categorize them, I would call them progressive folk death
metal (man, that conjures up some scary-ass images, don't it? :-D )

That's it for now... Peace! Matt T.

Chris emailed me when the Progday/FG fiasco started on rec.music.progressive. We had a little chat. I asked him if it was ok for me to put FG on my tape trades which he replied that that was ok. And why did he have problems with 10 CD-Rs being made for radio promotion????? *shrug* (I didn't bother emailing him anymore since the whole conversation started to get convoluted.)

    >With >that same note, i'm not happy that FG isn't playing ProgDay. It's come >to my attention that FG is not the only band that has had copywright >problems with Peter Renfro. Seems this guy is in it for himself, and not >for the music. Not good.

I beg to differ. I know Peter only from my experience from last year's Progday. As far as I can discern, he is in it for the *music* not the money. He was in debt in the thousands of dollars from last years festival, and he's still pulling one off this year. Now, if the man must have a strong ego for him to steeped in credit card bills in order to put out *another* festival.

In a related note, there is a lot of esteem on the Ytsejam for Mike Bahr. He has pressed *thousands* of CDs, and *he* is doing it for the money (a meager salary) *and* doing it for the love of music. Peter Renfro pressed only 10 CD-Rs for radio promotion. He did not consult FG over this, and got torn to pieces for it. Shall I make shit hit the fan over on rec.music.artists.kings-x for Mike Bahr's _Acoustic Spirits_, and make him look like a money laundering crook? <evin grin>

NAHHHHHH! (Mike Bahr, I wouldn't do such a thing. Looking forward for Acoustic Spirits! ;)

I hope to catch them again at tonight's FW show in Mt. Vernon (thus completing my "Trilogy of FATES" (saw them in CT and NJ). I missed them at the CT show (thanks to the ohhhh so pleasant traffic on the Whitestone Bridge). Also wanted to catch SOUNDSCAPE cuz I liked 'em at "ProgNite" in NYC months and months ago but I heard their latest "Discovery" and its kinda boring. Anyway, yeah DIVINE REGALE was a great opening band for FATES...too bad their newest was sold out so I bought their first EP "Horizons"..great stuff! Lead singer is a dead ringer for Scott Weiland but light years ahead of him :-)

Thanks, > Kevin.

He has that really great "timbre" to his voice that so few singers have (at least I think so)..It sounded great and came across perfect live..how is "Ocean Mind"?

also, how FUNNY was that very first band at Club Bene??? Think they were called "Disgraced Race" or something? A disgrace indeed!! To have a song chorus that goes "Bitch....Slut..Cunt...Whore" is quite an accomplishment indeed! I REALLY liked the singer for "Proud Flesh" (horrible name though), and I didn't pay attention to "Frostbite" cuz I was wrapped up in stalking SYMPHONY X by that point :-)

Hope its just as great a show tonight too...and where the hell is DT at these shows? I'm still waiting for Arch and Petrucci to come onstage and play "Fata Morgana" damnit!!

Tonights my first FATES WARNING hat-trick!!!!

cheers, Carlo (aka Fates, aka YtseStalker [or is that Chris P. :-p

My favorite is their first album,"Angels Cry"..."Holy Land" is very good too, but it has more "Brazilian influences"..."Holy Live",a live 6 track EP should be a good one too to start with, because it has my favorites tracks from "Holy Land" and a wonderful version of "Carry On"...But I htink you should buy first "Angels Cry"...:)

All the Angra CD's are great, depends on what you like yourself, if you are into the heavier side of prog, I'd start off with 'Angles Cry', if you like more complex and mellower then 'Holy Land' . Those are the two full studio albums, along with their number of EP's.

Angra discography: 'Reaching Horizons' - Demo CD, re-released with 3 extra songs including a 'speed' version of 'Wuthering Hieghts' 'Angels Cry' - Debut album, includes the regular version of the Kate Bush classic 'Evil Warning' - 4 track EP. made up of 'Angels Cry' tracks 'Holy Land' - One of the best albums ever made, a strong CD with lots of variety, showing off their Brazilian roots. 'Freedom Call' - 6 track EP, contains the cover of JP's 'Painkiller' and an awesome orchestral version of 'Stand Away'. 'Holy Live' - 6 track live EP, recorded in France on the 'Holy Live' world tour.

I do believe that they have signed a deal with Sony/Columbia in the US, so there CD's will be a lot easier and cheap to get hold of in the future.

But makes makes for a real challenging time sig. I don't think they've used it yet, though.

    > I was just wasting half an hour on downloading EVE MP3 file from the > RSABBS site and i got very disappointed. It sux.

And I'm quite sure you'll be fond of the "lyrics" if you loved Eve so much. Funny thing is, Eve's one of my prized DT songs. After showing someone The Mirror/Lie, I show them Eve, and they're like "no way this is the same band." heheh. Do the words "talent" and "versatility" mean anything at all to you? I didn't think so. (oh, whoops, I'm being a dick).

    >I need some help. I want to get an Angra CD but which would be a god one >to start off with? Sent private e-mail, or post to the jam for all to see.

Advice #1: if you like speed metal with lots of shred, start with Angels Cry. Advice #2: If you like progressive, orchestrated arrangements, buy Holy Land.

That's the way I hear 'em, and I luv em both. :) I like Holy Land more, actually.

    Later!

When me and Pat entered the club, I saw Mark walk out. I was going to follow him and say hi but he went to a telephone to make a call so I did not bother him. Then after the show we were talking to the guys from Divine Reagle and as I'm talking to the bassist, Mark again strolls on by. Damn, I missed him twice.

He was so damn awesome. I have that much more respect for the man now. And he was very cool with the fans after the show signing autographs. Jim Matheos wasn't really into the autograph signing as much as Ray was. But fortunately I got both of theirs on my "perfect symmetry" booklet.

Did anyone notice the guy selling flowers during "the 11th hour?" How ignorant.

    Hi, Mark.

(this is being both posted and e-mailed -- finally my server seems to be working well! :-) )

Well, I think that you should get the "Angels Cry" CD first, since it is song oriented. You'll discover that this first release is something along the lines of Helloween's "Keeper of the Seven Keys" era, with a bit more classical music influences (not much, but a bit more, specially noticeable on the last song, "Lasting Child"). It has a very good cover of Kate Bush's "Wuthering Heights", the theme from the movie based on the novel with the same title, written by Emily Bronte. This is one of the songs where Andre Matos singing is incredible.

After you've digested this album, I recommend getting their "Freedom Call" EP, which contains 6 songs (the brazilian edition has 8 songs, including 2 from a live apparition at FNAC, in France). It has a cover version of Judas Priest' "Painkiller", an orchestral version of "Stand Away" and one of my preferred Angra songs, "Reaching Horizons". Incredible.

Then, you may get "Holy Land". It is a very good concept album that has some nice tunes, but there's no song that is evidenced more than the others. All songs are equally good.

Hmm..okay, I'll tell you, but *only* you. You have to go to the top of Mount Fuji and unearth the golden monkey shrine. Inside it's left nostril will be the tail feather of the rare PIPSQUACK bird. You must then walk to South Africa to find the nest of this bird, which happens to be composed of the original analog studio tape of the "complete" Eve, the lyric sheet (which has been stained with pizza sauce by Mike Portnoy) and bat guano.

Note: this may take more than a half hour. More like 45 minutes.

Oh, did I just post this to the whole JAM? YIPES! Okay, everybody, please look into the light....

HEY, SPOILERS! DON'T READ THIS!!!! SPOLIERS!!!!!!

    This concert was flawless.

APSoG is as powerful live, if not more so, than through your headphones. <I did miss the alarm clock, though.>

I will begin with Jim. He should be very proud. This song may be the "Monument" of which he spoke on the last album. His playing was great. Who needs to shred when you can make such powerful statements as he makes in this song?

Anyone who doesn't cry like a baby during Part VI <at least on the inside> needs either a doctor to check his ears, or a couch and a therapist. It <everything: Ray's singing, Jim's lyrics, Jim's solo> is probably the most beautiful thing i have ever heard.

Mark Zonder ticks like a clock. A big, loud, bad-ass clock. Most impressive. The most talented rock drummer ever.

I was pleasantly surprised by Joey Vera. Good bass, good background vocals <how does he sing with that pick in his mouth?>. He was really awesome and great to watch, too.

The keyboards were OK, at best. Commendable, though, that the set went so well with a big keyboard problem in before the set began. Good recovery.

Finally, Ray Alder. Ray didn't sound as good as he does on the CD--he sounded one hundred times better AT LEAST. He sang technically. He sang aggressively. He sang emotionally. He sang musically. He sang artistically. He sang things up. He put tenutos on key notes. He went from a raspy scream to a melodic whisper and back seamlessly. He could not have been better if it were the first night of the tour.

These guys have more fun up there than I have ever seen. The all look happy to be there and they were very gracious to us after the show.

Ray is the man. He could beat up James LaBrie with one hand. :)

OK, i was ,as they say in your language, 'thinking' the other day, and made a conclusion out of the next 3 facts (ok ones more of an opinion, but i think most will agree):

1)The new material is some of the catchiest stuff DT has ever written. A lot of it is still complex and all, but after the first listen (at the Fix shows) i found a lot of the melodies stuck like sonic glue.

    2) The music industry is in a doldrum right now. Grunge is dying off, and no trend is really being exploited...it's kind of an everything-goes deal.

    3) Pop is making a come-back (Spice Girls, Hanson, etc.) "Huh?" you may ask. Think about it. When was Pop popular (redundant statement)? In the 80's! What was also popular in the 80's? See what I mean?

Conclusion: There is a fair chance that FII will be DT's brekthrough album; their 'Moving Pictures' or 90215 (or whatever that Yes album is called).

And because of that, I am proposing a plan. In case this happens, and DT become popular, we must either a) all go to Voices and hide it's existence. b)hide the Ytsejam's existence and let the new ppl go to Voices. OR make a whole new ytsejam for the new 'fans'

Why do I say this? Have you been in any popular band's mailing list? It's HORRIBLE! If you think the Ytsejam is in a bad state, check out Tool's list (the only one I'v been to) ...and i've even heard worst commenst in this list about the Metallica, Pantera, and Marylin Manson lists.

So, basically, we should have a fall-out plan in case DT 'makes it'. Any one agree?:)
