    >>He (Mark) played drums on Kevin Moore's new album - Chromakey (or something)

Joey Vera also is contributing to Chromakey, and Kevin supplies vocals.

    >>They have a permanent keyboardist now (forget his name) and plan to keep
    >>him and not hire a second guitarist.

The tour keyboardist is Ed Roth, but it is not clear to me that he will
    be the permanent keyboardist.

    >>They are hoping to do a second European and US tour later tis year in some
    >>more not-so-out-of-the-way places.

Another US tour! I am psyched! With the new DT coming soon, 97 is a
    year to remember!

No... and I'm kinda curious why you ask. The band members are all
pretty standard folks. Portnoy is Jewish, Moore is Catholic, and the other
members of the band are various flavors of Christian. In fact, the flaming
heart from Images and Words was a direct copy of the SHJ.

            Hi all!!

Wow, what a week. It's been about as good and bad as it can
possibly be, all at once. I'll just share the good because the remaining
bad doesn't really affect any of you.

The really good: The 4x CD burner works so fuckin' well, I'm in
heaven!!! And, Experience to Extremes' first 15 sets or so shipped on
time. Expect them in your grubby hands soon, early birds!

The AWESOME: For you folks, anyway. My prices are to be lowered.
Watch my update page for the full skinny on this. It won't affect any
orders currently in the mail, so those of you who have them going out,
don't sweat it. If you were waiting to send monday, all $25 discs are now
$20, and the difference carries over across the board. There weren't many
people caught in the overlap, so hopefully I won't upset anyone by this.

This has been made possible by several things. First, I got word
that the CDR labels were jamming in peoples' car stereos and in
magazine-style multi-CD players. So I'm dropping them, and while that
leaves the discs looking rather boring, it saves you about $1.40.
Secondly, the price of media has dropped a lot over the past few months.
On the scale of the number of copies I make on a daily basis, it
represents around a $2.20-$2.40 savings per disc. Thirdly, Gilbert sales
tax got lowered slightly. More on my page about that. Finally, I'm
dropping about a dollar in profit from each unit. I don't foresee problems
with this because the volume of sales will make up for it, plus as the
price of media continues to drop, it will cover for the missing dollar.

This price cut makes Prism Records order prices standard across
the board, whether it's for one of my custom releases or one of the
Italian boot replicas. I also think they're easily the best prices in the
world for collectibles of this nature, at last glance. I hope this makes
my buyers happy... this means YOU! :)

On other notes... Virtual Songs and Critical Mass are now sold OUT
and there are no current plans to put them into replication. Also Scenes
from a Memory is sold out and IS now available as a CDR replica. It even
has the original packaging because I was given like 500 extra liners! :)

Anyway, tons of thanks to all of you who bought (and are still
buying) my sale stuff during the emergency, and thanks a million to those
of you who have been patient through all this delay and hardship. You're
    the greatest.

Dream Theater "Mosaic" orders will open 8/23/97. Tracklistings
will be posted shortly. It's a single CD.

Updates: I've added some more available stuff in the new update
also. Veteran Jammers already know what to look for. Those of you who just
joined this mailing list, you may wish to take a look at the web site
mentioned in my signature below. I think you'll enjoy what you see.

Yeah, I went to this whore house just a couple of miles ...... No,
seriously, this is a good idea.
This will keep all you shredders busy 'till the new DT CD arrives. But,
    what about all the
drummers, bass players, keyboardists, harp players, violinists etc. out
    there ????

I downloaded the YNM, and I instantly knew I shouldn't have ! This was not
    the kind of
song I would connect to DT. This doesn't mean the song sucks, i'ts just
    different ....

Anyway, I'm still going to buy Falling Into Infidelity ..........

Actually, tempo and time signature are two totally different things. 4/8 is the same thing as 2/4, and so a tempo of 80 bpm in 4/4 is exactly the same as 80 bpm in 2/4. Changing the time signature does not change the tempo. Let's break it down a little further...

80 beats per minute = 1 1/3 beats per second = .75 Hz Think of the tempo designation as a frequency. In the case of 80 bpm, in one second 1.3333... beats (quarter notes) have gone by, reciprocally, one quarter note takes .75 seconds.

Now, if you have a 4/4 measure in which two quarter notes take place in one second, the tempo is 120 bpm. Now change the time signature to 4/8. Now how many quarter notes take place in one second? Two!

So in fact, sequencers keep the time/tempo distinction exactly as they should.

    > So, when calculating the > tempos > for sequencing, you should keep in mind that a sequencer's tempo is > always > in quarter notes per minute and not in beats per minute.

So what's the definition of beat?

    > a number, and not with the corresponding note value. In a 6/8 piece, > for > example, you'd want to measure in dotted quarter notes per minute, since > that is the beat value in 6/8.

Well, I guess you kinda have to do some math there. A lot of the time people think of 6/8 as 2/4 with a compound meter (triplet subdivisions), when in fact, it is just 3/4 with the accents on the 1 and the "and" of 2. But a lot of the time the tempo marking is given as a dotted quarter note being equal to a certain number.... A dotted quarter note is 1.5 times the gate length of a quarter note, so to translate the dotted quarter note tempo designation into its "sequencer-friendly" equivalent, multiply the dotted quarter note tempo by 1/1.5 = 2/3.

This is exactly the debate that people had gotten into with the intro to The Mirror a long time ago.... People had all these crazy time signatures and whatnot, when it was simply just 4/4 and 3/4. And no, the tempo does not change.

Hope this helped anyone that may be interested in this stuff. Now back to your regularly scheduled cussing by people with free email accounts.....

    Brian

That would be "indefinable". Then again, I've heard it defined pretty well. The definition was "120% pop-rock".

Given that the guys are 11, 13 and 16 years old, I see nothing wrong in that little identity crisis. After all, they're actually pretty good at doing whatever it is they're doing. Give them a couple, no, ten years. Let's judge grown up musicians instead of kids who aren't graduated high school yet.

As for those who got the idea that I worship Hanson, you're wrong. :-)

Their next single will be released under the name of Nos-Nah, it'll be called "BBB-Mom". The record company will fire the two elder kids and hire some new musicians, a 31-year-old and a 61-year-old dude.
