            Yes...the show is this Friday at Sidekicks (2139 Broadview Road)
    their phone is (216) 749-7555 and there should still be plenty of tickets
    left. I am not sure where Sidekicks is, but it is supposed to be "7 lights
    north of Brookpark road". Anyway, it should be a great show with all of
    ApsoG being played, though, be warned there are 3 other opening bands, so
    Fates may not go on until 11:00 or 12:00...but at least we get and hour +
    of music..for a reasonable price!

      Local releases are a lot more expensive than imports in Japan (weird
      but true). They have to release albums earlier in Japan, and make them
      a bit more special, in order to sell local copies at all. It sucks for
      people anywhere else, because they often have to pay through the nose
      to get the extra stuff :-/ Usually, the extra stuff is also released
      on the singles, though... Marillion's "This Strange Engine" has two
      extra unplugged tracks on the Japanese version... They were released
      later as bsides on the "Man of a Thousand Faces" single. The Japanese
      version of Fish' "Sunsets on Empire" has a bonus track that was also
      released on a single in the rest of the world. Of course, this is not
      always the case.

      Well, there's a sample from "Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure"
      in there somewhere... Most of it was taken from "Wayne's World",
      though...

      James' real first name is actually John... They figured three John's
      in the same band would be too confusing. James also considered using
      the name Kevin, so there'd be two John's and two Kevin's in the band.
      Mike Bahr was supposed to be the second Mike, when they considered
      him as the producer of Awake...

      They got the symbol from a misprint of the WDADU cover, when they
      were still using the name Majesty. Some of the letters got printed
      over eachother... They kinda liked it and started using it as their
      symbol. It has no real meaning.

      to set them on fire for fun. He once accidentally burnt down his
      parent's house that way. The barbed wire is kind of a warning for
      kids not to "try this at home".

    Fates Warning Review Pt. 1 (In 12 parts)

            I dragged a good friend kicking and screaming to see Fates Warning in Champaign, IL
    this past Tuesday. It was a 2 hour drive from here in Chicago to the now deserted (summer
    session has ended and fall session begins in 2 or 3 weeks) U of I campus. We met up with a
    big time Rycher friend who lives on campus over the summer, and walked around, stepping over
    tumbleweed, and occasionally hearing the wind whistle through the vast, barren college campus.
            On the way down, I expected there to be a lot of people waiting for this show... the
    campus is usually extremely crowded, and this is the only bar in town that plays metal shows.
    I was mistaken.
            After waiting outside what looked to be a tiny little club for about an hour past when
    they said the doors should open, we were finally ushered in and carded (19 and over) to get
    in. The club was bigger on the inside than it seemed from the outside. The stage was
    acceptable, about 3' tall, and spanning from wall to wall. They had a desk at which a man was
    selling 2 Fates shirts, both a little disappointing, but also acceptable. One is Gray with
    blue lettering, saying "Fates Warning, a Pleasant Shade of Gray" on the front upper left
    (badge style) and in big letters on the back it said "Let Nothing Bleed into Nothing" on the
    top, and at the bottom, right over your ass, it says _This_ Shade of Gray, or something to
    that effect. The shirt seemed to have been designed by whoever designed the shirt Ray was
    wearing... his was green, and on the front, across the chest it said "Train of Thought" in
    yellow, and on the back it had "Deliberate" n big yellow letters printed right at the
    bottom, again, right over your ass. The grey shirt turned out to be the wiser shirt to buy...
    read on for why. The other shirt is black and long sleeved... it's a cooler looking shirt,
    with a new "Ford" looking Fates logo repeating down the right sleeve. Pretty similar in other
    aspects, as I recall. I'll be seeing them again on Sunday, so anyone who didn't get a shirt (I
    don't think they were offering them at some of the other shows)

    As I said, the shirts are cool enough, but very little graphics (I vastly prefer the design of
    the Ytsejam T-Shirt). I will be happy to buy as many shirts as anyone needs, but in this
    situation, I can't mail them to you until I receive payment. Contact me for further details.

            We expected a lot from the opening band... we had heard rumors about this being some
    great prog band from a local town, and were pretty pumped. Disappointed that it wasn't Divine
    Regale, yes, but pumped nonetheless.
            Let me tall ya, folks, the band was called Hate Choir, and there is nothing worse. I
    would rather have been bleeding from my right nad all show than have to sit through that crap
    again. This band couldn't decide if they wanted to be D.R.I., Slayer, or Black Flag...
    whatever they were doing, they were doing it wrong. They repeatedly insulted the crowd for
    not enjoying their music (I use the term loosely) and played worse than anyone can imagine.
    This is beyond bad, folks. I am absolutely not shitting anyone about this, but during their
    set, I actually started thinking "I would rather be watching the Spice Girls live or Coolio
    live than this" and I started some creative visualization, in hopes that maybe I could make
    myself hear Spice Girls and see Spice Girls, and not have to endure this unpleasant shade od
    pain. They were too powerful... I failed.
            When the torture ended, one of the main guys in the Fates crew came down to us in the
    crowd and said in sort of a whisper, "What the fuck was that?" He didn't look like he was
    joking... he looked as though he truly didn't know. Unfortunately, I couldn't answer him... I
    didn't know for sure either.
            During the opening act a few more people came in and we almost had what looked like a
    crowd there, but I realized there were maybe 3 layers of people by the stage... the place was
    empty. I spotted Mark Zonder in the back of the room signing autographs, but figured they'd
    be on soon, so I left him alone, and kept my spot at center stage, fondling the left monitor
    (which I was pounding to pieces with my fists during the show).
            Fates came out shortly after, to some level of applause. During the sampled beginning
    of the song (Everything before the "So where do we begin" is sampled, like DT did with PMU and
    Metropolis when I saw them, to add effect when they come out on the stage) Ray took a
    disappointed look around the gathering, and said into the mic "Now don't yall crush each other
    to death out there." Jim Matheos looked depressed at the small number of people waiting for
    the show. We found out later that there were only 93 people in attendance.
            The sound effects built up to a peak and Ray said "Ooooooooh feel that tension
    building! Spooooooky!" just joking around. He was proving to be very good at getting a
    response from the crowd, even before he started singing.
            They broke full on into APSoG, and I have to say, I haven't been so impressed with an
    execution in my life. They sounded at parts JUST LIKE THE ALBUM, and at other parts BETTER.
    It was truly stunning. The band far exceeded my picky expectations. If you don't like Fates
    Warning, you should consider shelling out the $10 and seeing them on this tour, to see if that
    doesn't change your mind. It is something that I feel completely honored to have seen, not
    unlike the first wave of the G3 show in Chicago (Which was the show the guys all said in a
    Guitar Mag interview was their favorite). There's no way Dream Theater is better than this
    band. Maybe equal (I dunno) but no one is like this band, and no one I've ever seen has put
    on a better show. They had no fog, minimal lighting, and no tricks or anything... they made
    all of the effects with their instruments.
            The crowd of 93 startled the hell out of the band, because we were all completely
    raging and screaming at every break. It was pure energy in there. Mark Zonder commented
    later that it was the loudest 93 people he'd ever heard. Everyone there was a Fates fan, and
    everyone was singing along, especially during 11th Hour in the encore, when Ray held the Mic
    stand out above us.
            They continued through, and during the heavier songs, about a measure before Ray would
    come in, he'd run to the mic and go "BEEP" and just hop back grinning. We were just DYING.
    After a flawless performance of APSoG, the band stood there catching their breath, as we
    screamed for an encore. When the crowd calmed and Ray was about to speak, the guy next to me
    yelled "ONE MORE TIME!", and Matheos looked like he was gonna fall over laughing. I think
    they really appreciated the enormous crowd response... I think this music is being very poorly
    marketed. I think this could appeal to ANY fans of contemporary rock/alternative/prog/metal
    music.
            They played 5 more songs: Life in Still Water, Monument, We Only Say Goodbye, Face the
    Fear, and The Eleventh Hour, all of which were perfect, with the exception of the keys taking
    Frank's solos. The keys sounded great, but there's no way you can really replace a raging
    guitar solo with a keyboard solo. I've never heard a band pull that off well, and I've heard
    it attempted several times. I thought the keyboards and bass were excellent. Very well done.
    The guitars were even better, and the drums were amazing. Still, Ray shined above them all.
    Ray Alder is easily my favorite vocalist by a long shot. I think any of the Alder-haters on
    this list would change their opinions if they saw them on this tour. Full on AMAZING.
            I don't think I missed a word, singing along with the band. I was going completely
    psycho. I sang the LaBrie harmonies as loud as I could in Life in Still Water, and tried to
    add any harmonies that I didn't hear Joey Vera singing (he was the only one doing backing
    vocals).

    I checked on the back of my ticket stubs for some concerts, and nearly all of them have a clause on there that says that taping or broadcasting the shows is illegal. But this is all just semantics, really. Call yourself a taper if you want, it's still bootlegging. I don't know why you attach such a negative connotation to *that word*.

    Equipment that I recall off the top of my head:

    Guitars: Ovation steel string acoustic (most of which sound the same) and a PRS blue flame maple top body, with the bird inlays. I'm sure there's a model name for the guitar, but I don't care. :) Couldn't tell if it was neck through body or bolt on. He played through a Mesa Boogie head (which he had mounted in a rack) and a bunch of effects. I'll try to write down all of the equipment at the show on Sunday. He also had two Mesa Boogie 4 X 12 cabs that looked like the older metal grilled Rectifier cabs, but the logo said Mesa Boogie, and the Rectifiers say Mesa Engineering, I believe. Drums: No change in the kit from the last time I saw it on a poster... I forget the brand... GMS or something like that. A ton of cymbals and several electronic pads (He uses these extensively on everything from Parallels through APSoG, and I wouldn't have enjoyed the show so much had the sounds been absent). Bass: Huge Ampeg cab, and about 3 or 4 different basses. The only one I recall clearly was a Fender with a maple neck. He was on the other side of the stage for most of the show. He did crack out the fretless for a few tunes. Keys: Two Ensoniq keybards. I'll be sure to write down the models during the next show... I was too busy being dazzled by FATES WARNING to pay that much attention to those details.

    After the show, we ran out to the bus, to try and beat them to it. We failed... they must have made a break for it. About twenty people gathered with us though, and we presented a compelling argument for the band to come out and say hi. One of the dudes in the crew came out, and we accosted him, "Are they coming out, or WHAT?!" He told us not to go anywhere. Ray popped out and said in a squeaky high pitched joking voice "Whassup, People!" and then told us he had to do a quick interview and that he'd be back. A couple college reporter type people hopped up on the bus, and people were all mocking them like "I'm cool. I have a magazine. Look at me, everyone!" The crew guy came out again, and gave out a limited number of 8 X 10 glossy promo pictures of the band, one of which I managed to snag. I got that, two cd inserts, and (the reason why the grey shirt is better than the black one) my shirt autographed by the whole band. I'll be scanning the promo picture and putting that online (particularly because I think Mr. Kizer's gonna want that for his page) so you can all check it out and learn how to forge their names. My voice was shot to hell when I was talking to the band, and I told Ray I didn't know how he did it every night, since I probably couldn't sing more than one octave by the time they finished their set. He said that he loses his voice all the time after shows, but you can sort of feel when you're doing damage and when you're just working your limit. I think we turned what they thought would be a dismal night into a memorable one for them. I was floored, and Fates will remain my favorite band. I didn't see any jammers at the show. Very disappointing. One guy there has been following the Fates newsgroup forever, and he took what had to be some AMAZING photos during the show. He said he'll be scanning them and putting them up on his page and on the newsgroup, so keep your eyes peeled in the next couple days.

    Dude, what are you smoking? ALL CDs are encoded using 16 bits. CD = players can't handle anything else.

    Now DVD, on the other hand.. That'll be a whole new story. Assuming = audio DVD discs become a mainstream idea. I don't know if I could = imagine a 35 hour new DT release.. But I wouldn't be complaining if I = saw one!

    Someone asked about the closest person to a genius, Andre Matos, about his voice live. I was a little disappointed with the sound quality on 'Holy Live', but the vocals still sounded great. I doubt it very much if Andre does any studio overdubs, I have a video of him at a club show from the 'Angels Cry' tour and despite the bad quality his voice is spot on and hit those high notes with ease (specially during 'Wuthering Heights') and does killer versions of Maiden's 'Flight Of Icarus' and 'Wasted Years'. I have a CD boot called ' The Gates Of Holy Land' and Andre sounds great on that too, but the boot is really not worth buying, cept for the great cover of Manowar's 'Manowar'.

    Okay, I haven't read up on the specifics of the tech, so I'm pulling most of this out of my butt:

    I've never heard of a CD encoded at anything other than 16-bit, 44.1Khz. I think thew original post about increasing the length of a CD by using 13-bit encoding was a JOKE. Yes, you can save memory when sampling to a hard drive, but an audio CD must be at 16/44.1

    The whole debate over "resolution" vs "sampling rate" is kind of silly. Both contribute to overall sound quality in equal measure. Imagine if you graph out your sound wave on paper, with time in the x direction (as is usually done) -- sampling rate is your x resolution, and the number of bits (often called resolution) is your y resolution. Increasing the bits allows for smoother curves since you have a creater number of values for the aplitude of the wave, and increasing the rate allows for higer pitched sounds to be heard, since pitch is directly related to frequency, and you need at least 2 samples per wave period to be able to hear the sound. So, at 44.1 Khz, the highest frequency encoded is in the 22Khz range, and so on.

    Also, a 4x burner will not decrease the sound quality of an audio CD produced. Remember, CD burners were made originally for burning computer data, which, unlike audio data, needs to have 100% accuracy. You can overlook a small glitch in audio data and not even notice the difference, but an error in your hard drive backup and things no longer work. Now, early 4x burners mayu be more prone to errors, and thus result in more bad copies that have to be thrown away, but the good ones will sound exactly the same as the original. It's a digital copy, after all.
