    Hi everyone,

Well, I'm going to do a mini-review the Progressive Video Montage now.
I've had it for a week. But I only found the time at 3am last night(this
morning?). Anyway, it's got some cool songs. Monument was on there... :)
They chopped up the solos so the song sounds like it needs some Drain-O.
Some people have been saying that TSM sounds crappy. Well, it does! :)
But, since I couldn't put any sound on, I had to wear headphones. I
start to think this suc--Oh my gosh, it's echoing! There is this cool
echo effect on TSM video. It's more than likely just from the recording.
But it's pretty cool(at least to someone who hasn't slept in the last
    day or so).

    It's question time:
-Why the hell is there closed caption for MUSIC videos? I noticed that
only some bands have them. And I Mother Earth had the best captions out
    of them.
-Is there two videos for Live's White, Discusion? I remember the video I
saw on last Sunday's 120 minutes being *very* different.
-How does the last video effect YOU? It's just so complex on so many
different levels. One being why didn't Melissa hide the video camera
when Mike and his friends were totally blisted? ;)

Good going, Trev. Did I deprive my brain of oxygen? My fingers were so
numb that I thought wordprocessing was too much for me, so I quoted Bafu's
ENTIRE message just to add nothing to it.

    Keep up the good work.

    Hey all!

I had a girlfriend a couple years ago, whom I introduced to Images and
Words. She played piano, so it was easy to impress her with the musical
ability of Dream Theater. I just started counting off times and such and
she'd be impressed. If course, her favorite was Wait for Sleep, but she
    also liked surrounded I think.

Anyway, out of the CDs I own, here's what I would introduce to a girl who
I wanted to impress prog music on her: (of course, I need a girlfriend
first to be able to do this!!) Assuming she's not much of a headbanger
and doesn't know about prog at all....

Surrounded and Wait for Sleep, off of IAW
Lifting Shadows off a dream, the Silent Man, from Awake
Eve and To live forever are also good ones....

    Other bands:

Crystalline dream; Don't ever cry, just remember; and Alaska,
from Shadow Gallery's Carved in Stone.

Almost anything from Enchant's "A Blueprint of the World", except
Acquintance. You'd be an asshole if you played her "Acquintance"!!

"Hearts" off of Yes' 90125 (maybe start with this one, cause it's a love
    song, too)

Any others? Let's hear the suggestions!

My .02 on this would be -
Easter (Marillion) - killer song. I've never played it for anyone that
    didn't like it.

Stand Away (Angra) from "Freedom Call" - a very, very intense version of
    this, with orchestra.

Bright Eyes (Blind Guardian) from "The Forgotten Tales" - great acoustic
and orchestra version of this, with Hansi doing clean vox throughout.

Don't Ever Cry, Just Remember (Shadow Gallery) - contains electric, but
a very passionate and melodic song.

Just about any Fish - era Marillion.

Someone Else (Queensryche) - 'nuff said.

All I can think of at the moment - if Angra's "Make Believe" didn't have
the crunch guitar in it, I'd say that, as well.

On theory - it's interesting to see the discussions on the 'jam, and I
have a question for the other musos here - do you guys really think
about this stuff when you're writing? I know I don't - if we hit a rough
timing spot, we'll figure out the counts and Strong beats to work out
transitions and such, but we write the melodies first, then rely on
theory if we can't work it on feel. How do the rest of you work?

How about "Mama" by the Spice Girls...
         No, not really.

What about "I'll Never Get Tired Of You" by Kings X - my wifey thinks
that's great - but then she likes Megadeth so I can get away with
         playing the heavy stuff.

         Short but sweet...eh?
(thats the message not me, or wifey, although we are, probably...).

There's also Operation:LiveCrime which is a box CD/video set of
a concert they did on the Mindcrime tour in Madison, WI. One of
my favorite videos out there, by far. That basically does the
entire album straight through. Obviously, it's not a music video,
but it definitely a must-have if you like that album.

Does anyone know where or if this set is sold anymore????? I let
a friend of mine borrow the video (which I bought for $5 at a
flea market) and he moved or lost it or something......

I'll prolly regret typing this, but ... have you considered the following ?

Blind Guardian - A Past & Future Secret (My song of the end) Rage - In a Nameless Time (Lingua Mortis version)

Not really sure if they are progressive or not, since I am another of the ppl who got no idea about music... I just listen to it :)

    >How do you know how much money the band has?

Oh come on man, are you serious?? That was a weak attempt to downplay the obvious fact he doesn't NEED to tour and that he is wealthy.

To think that they have been financially unaffected by the commercial success of Empire and Promised Land, combined with all the sales from Warning, Rage for Order, the EP, Operation Mindcrime, Operation Livecrime, and all the foreign releases that we don't see, is to fool oneself.

    >> Fuck, if I took all of the vocalist reviews in here as gospel, I >> wouldn't think there were any good singers. > >But I thought you said most of the reviews of Geoof were "stellar." > >Steve Z

Yes, the email reviews I receive from people actually GOING to the showS in ALL different states around the tour have been great. But I guess I should not listen to them, and I should just rely on the opinions of people who only saw one show, or heard an RA of it.....you must be right. By the way, how many QR shows have you been to on this tour?

I'm not going to bother the Jam with a list of reviews, but I am prepared to email you reviews from many shows from different people, as well as people that have been following them from show to show. It really doesnt matter though, because if you weren't dissin him someone else would come along and do it ;)

Well, I went today to the store where I buy all of my CDs. It's a little street-corenr kinda shop. Well, I ask the owner if they have any Marillion CDs, and expect to the usual "NO, who are they?" answer.... (Prog isn't very polpular over here).

Apparently, the shop owner is a HUGE Marillion fan.... Got all of there CDs.... He even named the shop "Fugazi" and used the band's Jester logo as the shop logo....

So I bought "A script for a jester's tear"... It ROX....

I wanted to buy "Fugazi" too but didn't have enough money...

Thank you all for the reviews...

My favorite rhythm guitar sound, for >comparison, is the rhythm sound on Metallica's "Metallica". You can tell >which albums by Metallica were used with a Marshall dist and which ones >weren't. Jaymz had Mesas from '85 on.

Actually, I think that Marshall was just a spare - it wasn't on when I saw them. I got a pretty good look at Jim's rig while we were setting up (sometimes it's nice to be the opener - you should have seen Yngwie's rig!), and here's what I saw being used:

Mesa / Boogie Mark IV head (I _think_ it was a IV - the III and the IV look a lot alike) At least two Yamaha SPX 90's or 100's or 1000's - they all look alike form across the stage.

That's all that was on. I found it kind of odd that he had that huge rack and only used about five spaces worth of stuff (no wireless, even - not like he moves much...). I guess when you have someone else to carry it...

The again, he may be changing his rig around during the tour - a short conversation I had with him seemed to indicate this...

And skip Rocktron - for the money, they're OK, but Metallica actually uses TC Electronics processors. I'm sticking with my Quadraverb until I can afford a TC G-Force - it's the best there is.

The only signature sound I noticed was that PRS sound - I can tell when someone is playing one of those suckers a mile away - the harmonics are different because of the scale length...

    OK, I've babbled enough...

Maybe they would like Queensryche's "Silent Lucidity." It's one of those "nice & tender" songs. :-)

There may also be some Genesis that she would get into.

Rush - different strings, presto Alice in Chains - no excuses, nutshell, got me wrong, heaven beside you Queensryche - silent lucidity, hero (pretty much acoustic), bridge, out of mind, one more time, I will remember, the killing words (unplugged), the lady wore black (unplugged...killer version!) Fates Warning - island in the stream, chasing time, the road goes on forever Steve Morse Band - a delicate balance, foreign exchange, slice of time, modoc, the whistle Extreme - more than words King's X - the difference, legal kill, life going by Stratovarius - forever (beautiful song)
