I'm a proud owner of the Rocktron Chameleon, which I have found to be the
best solid state preamp out there, and I seriously like the Voodoo Valve.
However, that's not even talking about Rocktron's greatest preamp. I
tested this preamp, head-to-head with a Mesa/Boogie TriAxis for about 40
minutes one day, through the same equipment and I have to say I thought the
Rocktron kicked it's ass. That's a BIG statement coming from me. I love
Mesas. The preamp was the Rocktron Pirahna (You're right Ed, it rules!).
More tight gain than a barrel of 'deth :)

Not much, but it's a fact that a lot of Jammers and prog-lovers
in general really love her music. I checked out her music 'cuz
I kept reading about her on the Ytsejam and Freaks mailinglist.
      (That's the Marillion mailinglist).

You say that like it's a bad thing ! ;-)

Uh... They were considered to be *the* prog band of the 80's, dude.
IMO, their album Brave ('94), is one of the most *brilliant* albums
*ever*. It's one huge 71:08 minute long epic concept album. Some of
our fellow Jammers think it's "boring", but they probably put it on
intro-scan and gave up on it, right after.

Dream Theater usually "kicks ass" and grabs you by the throat, from
the get go... Marillion is more subtle... Their music is all about
moods and building up to brilliant instrumental breaks, rather than
just trying to "rock yer nadz". (hope the Ytse-slang helped a bit).

    > They remind me of what people describe old Genesis to be, even
    > though I've never heard old Genesis. (shrug).

Marillion's first albums were often compared to Genesis' early albums.
Brilliant stuff, btw... Both early Marillion as well as early Genesis.
That's when Peter Gabriel sang for them, and Phil Collins did what he
      did best... play drums.

    > I'd say that if you want to buy an album, dig around through the UK

Misplaced Childhood is a classic. That one's also a concept album.
I think Clutching is even better, though. These are both with Fish
on vocals, btw. He left Marillion in '88 (and is touring in the US
right now). Steve Hogarth (their current singer) is very different
      from Fish, though.

Maybe you should first pick up "The Best of Both Worlds", a double
album with Fish-era songs on disc 1, and Hogarth-era songs on disc
      2. Let me know which songs you like best, and I'll point ya in the
right direction :-) Btw, I was one of the people who made up the
name for that cd ! Got a nifty print of the covers, signed by all
the bandmembers, Fish, the artists and the manager as a prize :-)

    > You'll grow to love the rest quickly. :)

If you give their albums half a chance, you'll probably love them.
Listen to it LOUD with the lights OFF, btw. It helps.

Hey, I've been on this list for awhile, but this is my first post. :) So
anyway, here goes. I am a music major studying theory, and I can suggest
"Music: in Theory and Practice" as a good beginner's theory book. It isn't
commonly found in any bookstore, but your local library MAY have it. Some
schools use it as a theory textbook. Anyway, the authors are Bruce Benward
and Gary White, and they do a thorough job in explaining first the basics and
fundamentals of music, as far as music literature and notation, and then they
cover the more advance topics such as chords, scales, modes, tonality,
harmony, intervals, texture, etc. If you have an analytical mind, you
shouldn't have too much trouble understanding theory. Good Luck!!

Anyway, I think LiveCrime isn't available anymore. Proably the only way

ok ok...A Past & Future Secret is fine BUUUUUTTT ..:)...i'd let em listen
to either The Bards Tale (song makes me weep each time) or to Mordred's
Song...ok so it;s not THAT acoustic but my ex still loves it each time she
listens to it...and her cookie is Jungle/Drum'n'nBass (puke) but then
again she loves Stratovarius' "Babylon" <grin>..
    Rage....hmmm....ermmm.....i'd go for the Instrumental-Orchestral
    version...muuuch nicer...More songs.....hmmmm.....<rummages through CD's>

Skyclad:"Moongleam And Meadosweet" from "Wayward Sons Of Mother Earth"
Annihilator: "Crystal Ann" from "Alice In Hell"
    Y.J.Malmsteen: "Crying" from Trilogy

I;m so pissed off.....I dont recall anyone mentioning Crimson Glory!!!DOH!

Not tottaly acoustic byt everyone who's listened to it(and I mean
    EVERYONE) loved them

    ]From their "Transcendance" album

    -Lonely
    -Painted Skies(lovely lyrics)

    and fom "Crimson Glory"

    -Lost Reflection(damn moody song)

BTW...I "hear" C.G. are preparing for a new album with the original
line-up (hoorey!) minus Midnight (DOH!) with someone named Wade (eeh?)
replacing him.....cant remember the title offhand, too bored to start
X-Win to find out...anyone got more info on that?

I sure don't. I tried to point out that talking about strong and weak

the music should speak for itself, but someone keeps insisting that
there is only one 6/8 measure or something.... ;)

I usually work from around 7:30 to 4... Hah! Seriously, I usually think
of a groove or melody or something when I'm away from instruments, like
when walking down the street or something. Then when I get home I'll
program it into the sequencer and jam on it, revise it, develop it,
    etc..

The only people who actually think/post about stuff like that ("correct"
placement of strong and weak beats, sequencers' tempos being inaccurate,
etc.) either don't write much or are just plain nuts. ;)

Where? With whom?) a great singer with an absolutely unique (some might call it strange) style (Don't know any other singer with a comparable style. Anyone?) and a huge ... umm, what's it called in English? A huge range or tones (???) which makes it interesting too. His melody lines are=

sometimes so ... unusual and varied you first have to get accustomed to. = At first listen you often think he doesn't exactly hit the right tone but that's just him and I love it this way. It never gets boring. Once you kn= ow him, his style and the songs you simply get addicted. The songs are great: Quite heavy, progressive and somewhat dark (but stil= l very melodic in its darkness).

For me *these* were and still are the *real* Fates Warning. I like the newer FW stuff too but for me it's a different band with a completely different sound now. Gone is John Arch's fantastic voice and gone is that=

so typical (sometimes rhythm, sometimes leading) guitar sound which was somehow dark and light at the same time (don't ask me how that worked!). Unfortunately...!

Ok, let the flaming begin ... ;)

    Cheers! Mak

Actually, yes! And they're right here, in my hands :) ! I just bought the tickets for the September 11 and 12 DT concerts that will occur in Santo Andre (Aramacan). The opening band will be the shred trio Dr. Sin.

Also, there will be Mike Portnoy and John Petrucci clinics in Sao Paulo, no dates confirmed. The tickets are being sold in the store called "Aqualung", inside the "Galeria" mall (30 bucks, 27 dollars). They accept student cards, which cut the price by half.

Unfortunately, there are no dates yet for Sao Paulo or Rio (I know there are a lot of fans there), but what can I say? They're coming! (I knew you were right MP!)

    Life is good.

I'd suggest "Space Dye Vest", too, at least the intro. I was actually playing that in the car one day with a friend of mine who said in the beginning, "this is pretty. Is someone going to come screw it up?" No, she's not a prog fan. :)

You'd be an asshole if you played anyone "Acquiantance"! How that tune got on that otherwise fine album I'll never know.

    >Any others? Let's hear the suggestions!

Try "21st Century Schizoid Man" from the first King Crimson album. If she doesn't run away, you may be able to make some headway. Musically, that is. :)
