haven't listened to it in a few days/weeks, so i don't recall if it is
actually acoustic, but it kicks all ass and beyond, and if ever i could
figure out how to makes .wav and put it on the web page, this would
without a doubt be the background music for it.........

I know there has been some discussion here about gtting Dream Theater on
the Radio by bombarding the radio stations with requests.
In the past, many of you have suggesting trying to get them on Dave
Letterman, Leno, etc... However, this effort never eally materialized
since DT did not have any new material.
Wouldnt now be a good time to start organizing something like that????
Look at the overwheliming response that East/West had with the
petition. Perhaps someone close to the band or management, could tell
us what timing would be appropriate to start writing. Otherwise, my
suggestion woudl be to start writing to Leno, Letterman (And Paul
Schaffer), Conan, etc... on the 23rd (or the 24th since I will be too
busy listenting to the new album).
Maybe someone could take the initiative to organize something like this.
Just something to think about.

Michael Pomerleau

Hey, relax. =) I know something about music, I play (at last try to)
the guitar myself, and can't understand most of it also. =) (I NEVER
understood the difference between compound and simple meters...)
> 2 - Some friends of mine (including my girlfriend) that don't

When I hear that (and it's often, really), I just say "Get a life!" and
keep on listening my stuff. =)
Besides these you mentioned, here are some more (some have already been
mentioned by other, I know):
- Shadow Gallery, many stuff from Carved in Stone.
- Savatage (as someone said, stuff from DWD and Edge of Thorns), and
some stuff from Streets also (see "Believe". It's electric, distorted,
but even my mother loves that one! =) )
- Queensr˙che: many songs from Promised Land (Bridge, Lady Jane,
Someone Else?), and, o'course, Silent Lucidity.
- Why not part IX of APSoG???
- Joe Satriani, yeah, this guy has lots of cool stuff. =) "Always with
me, Always with you", "Tears in the Rain", "Thinking of You", and there
it goes...
- Deep Purple has some cool one you could get too. Wasted Sunsets,
Sometimes I Feel Like Screaming, The Aviator...
They're not all acoustic, but they're all great tunes.

> On theory - it's interesting to see the discussions on the 'jam, and I > have a question for the other musos here - do you guys really think > about this stuff when you're writing?
Not really. Most of what I've been argu ... er ... discussing (grin) has to do with notation, which is simply transcribing the music so that it can be played again later. Since a piece of paper is not a recording, there are all these rules so that someone who has never heard the piece can play it with a reasonable degree of accuracy. That's why all the discussion of meters and such has been so convoluted.
When writing, write what you want, how the music sounds right to you. But, knowing the throy can help you to explain what you are doing to someone else. And, as we all know, having a common language between people helps greatly to one's ability to communicate. That's all music throy is. It's not telling you _how_ to write, but telling you, once you've written something, how to describe it accurately.
The point where theory can help in the writing process is when you come to a stumbling point. Knowing what is often done, in terms of chord progressions, rhythmic feels, etc. can help overcome writer's block.
Now, as a keyboardist who uses computer sequencing heavily (we don't have a bassist or drummer yet) I often do have to face meters on a regular basis, and often break the rules (gasp!) because it's much easier to tell the computer to do a rhythm that repeats every six beats as 6/4 rather than putting in all these alternating measures of 4/4 and 2/4 (which is as it should be most of the time) -- but, if I ever need to do a real transcription of the song, I will go back and correct it.
And here comes brian again (hi!)
>I sure don't. I tried to point out that talking about strong and weak >beats for abitrary measures/time signatures is kind of silly and that >the music should speak for itself, but someone keeps insisting that >there is only one 6/8 measure or something.... ;)
heh. I'm not saying that you can't write music like that, just that it probably _isn't_ actually 6/8.
>I usually work from around 7:30 to 4... Hah! Seriously, I usually think >of a groove or melody or something when I'm away from instruments, like >when walking down the street or something. Then when I get home I'll >program it into the sequencer and jam on it, revise it, develop it, >etc..
Sounds like how I work. Funny that.
>The only people who actually think/post about stuff like that ("correct" >placement of strong and weak beats, sequencers' tempos being inaccurate, >etc.) either don't write much or are just plain nuts. ;)
I'll take the just plain nuts, option. ;) While I've only completed 2 songs right now (only been working seriously for about 4 months) I've got 3 more cooking well, and about 8,000 on the back burner, including (counting) 5 concept albums, two musicals and an opera. I tend to write lyrics first, which is why I have so much stuff.
Also, I'm a computer programmer, and I've been using various MIDI software for about 10 years now, longer if you count pre-midi stuff. I just notice the various idiosyncracies of software a lot.
I go shut up now.

Mark Bredius says:
> Uh... They were considered to be *the* prog band of the 80's, dude. > IMO, their album Brave ('94), is one of the most *brilliant* albums > *ever*. It's one huge 71:08 minute long epic concept album. Some of > our fellow Jammers think it's "boring", but they probably put it on > intro-scan and gave up on it, right after.
I'm getting sick of your attitude. I've been on this list for years and we've all noticed you always have to point out that anybody who (god forbid) doesn't like Marillion must have A.D.D. or doesn't have a true opinion. Get it through your head, Marillion is a preferred taste and I think they're boring as hell. They have musical talent and are a hell of a lot better then %90 of the stuff I hear on the radio these days but most of Brave is just yawning keyboards and Steve Hogarth babbling about some girl. I listened to it 3 times and I actually WANTED to like it because I consider myself open minded. I own everything from Mozart to Coltrane to Pantera. There's only a couple melodies that hold my attention, "Lap of Luxury" being one of them. The rest of it just goes through my ears and nothing happens. It's like they're trying to be super subtle and dramatic with the concert album but nothing ever happens musically.
If this pisses all you Marillion fans off, then good, it should. I want you to realize that other people don't like Marillion. Music is subjective. I don't care if they're considered the prog-band of the 80's or if MP likes them. MP also likes rap and I can't even name any other prog-bands from the 80's. The way I see it prog died after the 70's and DT started to bring it back in the 90's in a new shape and form. This is all my opinion, flame away.
On the opposite side of the field I just received my package of both Angra full length discs and Spock's Beard's Beware of Darkness. I'll sum it up quickly. Angra is probably my new favorite band. Yes, they're that good. Technically they're just as good as DT and I think what makes me like them even more is every song is packed full of powerful melodies that blow my nuts off along with great technical passages whereas a few minute things from DT have always annoyed me (Another Day, Labrie trying to sing UaGM live...).
I can't describe their sound, you guys who don't have the discs probably have heard the descriptions already anyway. The most unique thing I've noticed is that they play speed metal songs in.......major keys! A lot of the vocal and guitar melodies are clasically influenced. I also happened to buy a Mozart disc last weekend and I noticed some of the influence in the progressions and melodies. It's unlikely a DT fan would be dissapointed with this stuff (then again Itchy says all DT fans will love Marillion) so go buy it now and help Angra break into the US. It's a disgrace that a band this talented and original doesn't have a record contract in this country.
As far as Spock's Beard goes just about any progressive music lover should like these guys. They're not metal, but they're full of good soudns from the 70's like Hammonds and Mellotron. Chock full of good riffs and melodies, I love every song except for the last one, at over 16 minutes it loses me sometimes, a bit too repetitive. Definitely worth the money I spent on this though. Support these guys.

Maybe cuz it has some of the kewlest damn drumming I've ever heard. Paul Craddick is a drumming genious. I still can't get the cymbal rides and shit at the beginning of The Thirst figured right. I'm getting close though, after nearly a year.
Hrm. Does this have to be prog or just rock? If anything else, put the acoustic versions of Return to Serenity and Trail of Tears from Testament's Live at the Fillmore. Then go for The Space and/or Kayleigh by Marillion, Nobody's Hero by Rush (did I miss this?), Sleep and All That I Bleed by Savatage. Love is on the Way and All I Want by Saigon Kick. Pure by Enchant, and I'm too lazy to dig around for more.
Anywho, they're not wholy acoustic, but they all pretty much start that way. And for a Scooby Snack[tm], put Sister Christian by Night Ranger. KorgX3 KorgX3@cyberhighway.net

How was it you described it? "stupid keyboard crap rock?" or something like that? Can't take the piss I substituted for you milk and now your Cheerios taste funny. It has finally happened. PT is here!!!!!!! This is Mike Bahr's best production. Innocence Faded live rules. James sings excellently in it. The quality of all the tracks is excellent. The only thing I hate is James' voice cracking on LSOAD on the best part of the song. I hate it when that happens in the PPV video, and I hate it here too. Anyways, he sings great through most of the CD. The Myung songs rule. Well, that's it. BTW, I also got the new Pantera. It's great. Anselmo doesn't have a fighting chance of reaching those high notes from the first CD, but that's OK. Alrigth, bye.

You should buy Jim Matheos' solo cd (not to be confused with Mr. SubtleRage's work by the same title) "First Impressions."
This cd is simply outstanding. Matheos' guitar work is quite touching, and Charlie Bisharat shows that there is a valid reason for learning to play the violin besides impressing your grandmother with chopsticks or Mary Had A Little Lamb.

But do they really dislike the use of any distorted guitars? Or just when it's dominant in the mix? Or are these the Jon Secada/ Luis Muigel-listening type? Because i've knownn a couple of girls who instantly fall in love with JLB's voice the minute they hear AD. Other than that, I have nothing more to add to the recommendations that've been given...but what I think you should do, is show them that music w/ distorted guitars can also be beautiful...hmm let me think. I want to say LtL, but that's so long...although you can alway try. Be sure to show them the lyrics though...definitely show' em Surrounded.
and if you can't convince them, tell them they're wimps who can't stand a little agression:)
