There's a Symphony X site at http://www.zero-mvp.com/art/SYM.html that
has a sound sample from each of their three albums. In addition, the Heady
Metal site at http://headymetal.simplenet.com/ has a couple of different
samples.

DT has covered the Mission: Impossible theme on several
occasions. I don't know any place that has it in mp3/ra,
but it is on several boots (WDATU?). I don't remember for
sure which those are right now. But I know someone else
does.

As far as I know, the only "standard" accent in 5/4 is on beat
one.
Ah, you seek syncopation in DT music, do you? Just listen to
Portnoy. If he's not playing bass cymbal snare cymbal, it's
syncopated. ;)
But seriously, let's see... I'm working from memory, so some
of these may be better examples than others, and some of them
may not be examples of syncopation at all.
Intro of PMU. Petrucci is playing straight 4, Portnoy is
playing syncopation
Instrumental section of Metropolis, especially Moore's solo
and the riff that gets passed from person to person. I'd be
willing bet that Portnoy wrote the rhythm for that riff.
The Mission: Impossible theme is actually a pretty good example
Intro to Voices. This could be argued as just being strange
time sigs, but play it for one of your radio listening friends
and tell them to try to follow the beat. :) Laugh when they
fail miserably.
The Ytse Jam. What's that? You say you don't *have* WDADU? Go
ahead and get a copy, I'll wait right here for you. Ah, I see
you're back. It's worth the trouble to find isn't it.
Intro to 6:00, Portnoy again.
Really, if you want to hear the difference between a straight
rhythm and a syncopated rhythm, just compare a standard, no
talent drummer's grooves to one of Portnoy's grooves.

highly recommended from just about everyone.

Yes, there's a lot of DT versions of the "Mission: Impossible"
theme. For instance, "Uncovered" by Kobra Records has a VERY fast version
of this song. Some Mike Bahr boots also have slower versions of this song.
And just as a side note to Mike Bahr, he says (on his homepage)
that "Guitar Talkin'" has ripped him off getting the acoustic songs from
"Acoustic Dreams". I don't think that this is true, since the "Guitar
Talkin'" boot has things (the artists chatting) that are *not* in
"Acoustic Dreams".
See you later, Roger...

Cool, finally some keyboard talk on the Jam!
I've played both of these machines, and I have to say that the JP-8000 rokz some serious nadz... much better than our man Derek's Korg Prophecy any day :) If there's any synth players out there who are trying to decide on one of these retro analog-style synths (Yamaha ANX1, Nord Lead, Korg Prophecy) I have to recommend this one. The knobs and sliders are enough reason by themselves.
The VK-7 is also a great Hammond-replicator. A lot nicer than the XB-2 from a few years ago... great action...

DT has done a version of it a few times, both live and way back in the studio. It can be found on Lost In The Sky (Italian Bootleg -- you can probably get it from Mike Bahr) and assorted demos and whatnot. There's an mp3 of it at the official DT site (http://www.rsabbs.com/dt/newstuff/sounds.html) but I doubt it works because none of the other mp3's do. (I can't get them to work right, anyway)

Pedro, I think you have been led astray at some point in your life, hopefully not by someone here on the ytsejam. ;) Accents are defined, both their placement and magnitude, by the musicians who write the music that contains the accents. Asking where accents were NOT supposed to be is like asking DaVinci where the plates were supposed to be. You get my drift?
If you have more questions like this *please* ask them, because if you are letting things like where accents are *supposed* to be get in the way of you writing the music you want to, you're missing the boat and you need to get on that boat!! Ya know? Kick it!

Check out their first cd then. It's only available directly from Magna Carta. I think it is very good as well.

Wounded is good as well.
since you like Enchant and SG, check out Magna Carta's tribute ablums. SG and Enchant play on some of the Yes, Genesis, Pink Floyd, and Rush tributes.
>Finally, can anyone recommend other prog groups in the vein of Spock's >Beard, Enchant, or Shadow Gallery? Would I like Lemur Voice or Angra?
LV is good. You might want to check out Magellan and Altura both of Magna Carta. Another great band is Divine Regale.
If you want a really good "power prog metal" cd then check out the cd by Division called Paradise Lost. It's available from their web site: http://www.crosslink.net/~division/ I got this cd about 3 weeks ago and its been my top played cd since then. They dont have keyboards but I feel they have a unique and fresh sound. After my first listen I didn't really know what to think but obviously this cd grew on me and grew fast. Definitely worth $10. Check it out.

Anyhow:
A. Does anybody know what keyboard did Kevin Moore use to play the 6:00 intro? whay keyboard is Derek using for that part? This distorted hammond sound is just awesome....
B. I'm seriously considering buying a Korg DW-8000 (like Kev's) for about 800$ (mail form UK to Israel including shipments and VAT. the original price is about 450$). Is it worth it?
BTW I bought Marillion's "A script for a jester's tear" and no matter what you do, NOTHING sounds like good old Jupiter or Mini-Moog.....

Hi Everyone, Just wanted to give a small tiny bit of an opinion here. I went and saw the Fates Warning concert last night. Was great to meet all the Jammers who came...we were about half the audience!!! Sat thru a whole bunch of crappy opening bands. Just a warning: Never get directions from Dr. Mosh...great guy, tho. the last band before Fates, New Eden, was definately decent. Any one else who was there please correct me if I am wrong, but at the end of their set, did the singer say that they had just signed with Metal Blade Records? If so, buy them when you see them, they are more heavy, and the singer ( to me, at least) sounded alot like Dio. But if you are into heavier stuff, they are great. I want to comment on something that I read in my many backed up jams this morning.
> > ...People say they can't stand when Ray holds a note in the > > middle of a measure, and ends the measure with a really short note. They > > say this isn't a melody or something. > I like it when he does this...for two reasons. 1) it is different than you expect. 2) After seeing them last night, and seeing the crowd...you could tell who was there because there was a concert, and who was there to see Fates. All the little teenagers standing around...trying to sing along...but not able to anticipate the changes. Sorry, but it was funny as hell!! BTW- There was a jack ass there last night, drunk or stoned, I don't know, but he kept grabbing the singers of which ever band was ont he stage. Thank you to the two jammers who shouldered him away from the stage when Fates was on.
Had a great time last night, Despite Mosh's directions, Deidre Killam

On wed, aug 20th, I saw the tampa john petrucci clinic. It kicked ass basically. He played a bunch of the new songs like lines in the sand, take away my pain, a new millenium, maybe another one..It was a fun show, john was seemingly having a good time...especially with this one dumbass up in the front row asking him if he had pickups in his guitar. To finish the show he played the two short songs from the sega game, necrominicon or something....all i have to say is...HOLY SHIT! you guys gotta get this game, just for the 4 mins worth of music. The most prog ballz n chunk he's done, and with some industrial sounding effects as well, it can't be beat. After the show was over he hung around, signed pics and other stuff....It was something that is implanted in your mind and never erased.

Yes, they covered it. It's on InstruMental II and Subconscious (same version) and a live version on "When Dream and Today Unite" The last two are Bahr releases, so either he or any number of jammers can help you get a copy. > 2- LAST THEORY QUESTION (at least, for now) :) > Where are the accents in a normal 5/4 measure? > Can someone point some DT's songs where the accents > are NOT were they were supposed to be? > (ya know what I mean...the syncopation stuff)
In 5, there are two possible divisions of the beats. either 3 then 2 or 2 then 3. It's not a common enough meter to have only one standard. Same is true for the other uncommon (we like to call them complex -- we being prog-heads, it's not an official term) meters, such as 7, 11, 13 and such. Just come up with a division into groups of 2 and 3 and you have a just fine and dandy pattern.
Okay, places where DT deviates from normal beat patterns. First: The 9 part in the verse of Surrounded. They list it as 9/4 (I think) but's it's not a compound 9. There are actually 9 beats in it, and even then it's syncopated strangely. If you tap out the nine beats, you will notice that many of the strong notes do not occur on the beat divisions.
Second one: At the beginning of the instrumental section to Metropolis, the 13 part, they divide it into 6/8 then 7/8. The 6 (again) is not compound meter, but rather three goupings of two, making it look and feel more like 3/4. They called it 6/8, though, because the 7/8 meter which follows is identical to the 6/8 except for the extra note. To show this similarity, they notated it as 6.
Now, just in case people are going to denounce compound meters because of the above, :) Here's a few places where DT does do compound meters: The intro and chorus of Take the Time (the 12/8 and 9/8 parts) The 6/8 parts in Wait for Sleep (including the entire second verse) In Learning To Live: A lot of measures after the WFS part, and starting with the Keyboard solo and through the rest of the song it is mostly 12/8 with some 9/8 measures. That's all compound meter there. I don't have the Awake book, so this is all from I&W.
Have fun, knock yourselves out.
