    Bruce,

I sincerely hope that the new Dream Theater release "Falling Into
Infinity" will get serious air time. This band deserves a lot more air
    play that it gets.

These are accomplished musicians who went to Berklee Music School. They
have a following. You may want to check into a petition that over 2500
from around the world sent in to their record company, as they were
delaying the release. And this is from just people who have Internet
access! Imagine the total audience out there...

The petition worked, and several of the band members thanked us. They
already have a platinum hit from a few years back (Pull Me Under off of
    the album Images & Words)

It's time to let the music do the talking, Bruce. I've noticed that Rock
GIR 101.1 in New Hampshire has been first out of the gate with some of
the new stuff. It's time to take the crown back!!!

Here are some places to check if you like to surf the web:

The latest NEWS from the Official Dream Theater Page:

    http://www.rsabbs.com/dt/whatsnew.html

The Drummer's response to the petition's impact on the record company:
    http://www.prognosis.com/petition/portnoy.html

Thank you for taking the time to read this and I look forward to your
reply. I've listened to you guys since the 70's and always felt that
you've stayed with the harder rock audience longer than any of the other
local radio stations. Keep up the good work!

    Regards,

    Jon

First, you're reposting private e-mail. That goes a long way
    towards telling me you're a jag off(Don't worry... I'm an asshole). I
never thought anything poor of you, but that's just plain immature. Raise
the issues on the jam, but you have no reason to repost private mail.
Regardless of what comes out of this whole debate, I don't think
there's been a time when I've ever been disrespectful of you, or a time
when you've been disrespectful of me.

    > I really didn't want to put this kind of stuff public, but this
    > was such that I just had to post it. After this, I will exert all my
    > willpower to not respond to flames on the Jam toward me, because as this
    > post says, they are planned and deliberate and apparently the posters
    > don't care about what it's doing to the content of our favourite digest.

Second, that too is bullshit. What has been discussed is not
letting you sidestep all the issues, Mike. If you recall when Brian
posted his first on this issue, you answered with joking comments and
ignored the issues. You did the same with every subsequent post. Maybe
you just didn't feel like answering those kinds of questions... that's
your right, but we decided collectively to use our own rights to bring the
same questions up again and again, each time they became relevent, until
you actually addressed the issues that are pissing several jammers off.

    > That's what I'd have to say to equalize what you've said above. I
    > work two part time jobs, one of which is my CD business. The Ytsejam list
    > has always been and will continue to be my greatest market. I don't
    > particularly feel like taking a 50% pay cut in the game of life right now,
    > and why would I??

THIS IS THE FUCKING PART THAT PISSES ME OFF. That's why I'm
responding. You're looking at the fucking Ytsejam as your god damned
MARKET. MY friends don't look at me as their market. Thus, with regards
to the jam, I have no way to consider you anything but a businessman.
I will go on record as saying I really appreciate your trend of
moving your updates to a web page. That's how I feel commercial things
should be handled on the jam. It's not my list, and I'm not trying to set
any rules, but I'm entitled to my own visions of how I think things should
be. I'm not enforcing them, but passively, I am going to make it harder
for people to use the Ytsejam as a direct marketing tool.

    > > Chris Ptacek and others (myself included) will continue to publicly
    > > flame you for your frequent wastes of "jamwidth" (heh). And then your

This is something that Brian said that bugged me. I don't like to
flame anyone. On occaistion, I get out of control (mildly) and make
statements that I regret (and after talking to Joe Kruger, I do owe him an
apology). The intent that some of us jammers have is not to flame anyone
for this stuff, but to question it's validity on the jam, and question the
person who raises the issue. If you make it a public discussion, then we
have the right to do that.

    > I really wish you wouldn't.

The people who have been discussing this have not flamed you. I
can say that for certain. There were a couple people who did flame you,
but we did not directly encourage them (meaning, we didn't speak to
anyone about that). Flames are immature. In that respect, I too am
immature at times, and am trying not to let my anger get the best of me.

    > > Don't go posting about how some other bootleg manufacturer ripped you off.

    > They didn't rip me off, I use "ripped" because it's the common

    > Example in a sentence: "I ripped a few songs from each of my DT CDs to
    > make a single CDR for the truck with all my favourite songs on it."

Bullshit. We know that too, but in the context it was discussed
two jams or so ago, that's not how the term was used. You may consider
rethinking your wording if you don't want confusion here, but the way the
word was used was more like "Ripped Off".

    > I no longer have to. See http://www.goodnet.com/~durnik/boot.html
    > Grin... and it was never really _hard_, just time consuming and expensive.

It's not my place to judge whether bootlegs are wrong or right for
everyone, just for myself. That's why I'm really pleased to see this take
place. The web page updates save bandwidth and save bullshit. I still
like Mike's real posts... just not the equinox or bootleg sales posts.
Further, I think these Subconscious auctions and cd sales should go on via
web pages. Just include a URL. Wouldn't that be easier anyways? But
that's just a suggestion, not even a request.

    > Nothing is going to happen. It's a free country. I don't smoke and
    > I don't like it when others do so, but what right do I have to tell them
    > to stop when I could just as easily move aside. I don't expect the world
    > to revolve around _my_ needs, you see.

And what happened to respecting others? I don't think it's a lot
to ask. You don't see Brian selling his demo tape on the jam, do you?
He's an amazing guitarist, and I don't think there's a jammer on this list
who wouldn't be blown away by his tape, but if he even did that, he only
posted once to say it was done, and to give a URL where you can get the
tape. He's not spamming us over and over and over and over like some
    people.
Again though, for the most part, I don't have a problem with the
"Bahr Bootleg" situation. Just when posts buzz around about the boots
that aren't telling us where to get the info we want if we want your
stuff. Since you recently began the web page, and have been handling
updates by merely offering a URL, I have no gripe.

Mike, if you want, I'll be happy to discuss this more off the jam,
if you have any problems with what I'm saying. Brian, myself, and the
others have no intent towards posting from out of nowhere on these issues.
Only when things upset us. That's fair, isn't it? I know it's not one on
one, but thats the nature of such a large discussion.

Since some of you still (like myself) love '80's rock, plus there are some musicians/vocalists that you like on the tribute, here it is:

The long-awaited AC/DC Tribute CD, Thunderbolt, is completed and will be released before the end of the year. Here are the cuts and artists involved: 'Whole Lotta Rosie' (vocalist Steven Pearcy, guitarist Tracii Guns, bassist John Alderete, drummer Jay Schellen, guitarist Bruce Gowdy), 'Back In Black' (vocalist Joe Lynn Turner, guitarist Phil Collen, bassist Jeff Pilson and drummer Simon Wright), 'It's A Long Way To The Top (If You Wanna Rock N' Roll)' (vocalist Lemmy Kilmister, guitarist Jake E. Lee, bassist Ricky Phillips, Wright and Morley), 'Sin City' (vocalist Jack Russell, guitarist Mark Kendall, bassist Sean McNabb, drummer Bobby Blotzer and Gowdy), 'Night Prowler' (vocalist/guitarist Dave Meniketti, bassist Tony Franklin, Wright and Morley), 'Shake A Leg' (vocalist John Corabi, guitarist Bob Kulick, bassist Billy Sheehan and drummer Pat Torpey), 'Ride On' (UGLY KID JOE), 'TNT' (THE LAST HARD MEN), 'Walk All Over You' (ANTHRAX with Dee Snider), 'Little Lover' (vocalist Sebastian Bach, guitarist Warren DeMartini, bassist Billy Sherwood and Blotzer) and 'Highway To Hell' (QUIET RIOT).

No, please, instead of doing a favor to just one 'jammer, please do the same favour to lots of 'jammers: if you can, put those sound files to donwload on some homepage. If you don't know how to do this, tell us and we'll try to help you...

Ok. Now for some NDTC message (maybe this will help the 'jam has less flame wars): are you guys interested in photography?? Do you know some good introductory book on the subject that I could buy from, say, Amazon Books or Stack Books??

    Thank you very much, Roger...

Well, it's a little late now, but also for future reference, it might be worth the time to listen to the entire message on the answering machine. I called Club Kaos that day (Friday) in hopes of reserving a ticket for the truly insane Dr. Mosh (hey, we "truly insane" ones must stick together, no?) as he decided at the last minute to come up from L.A. And if I remember correctly (being warped, my memory is often distorted ;) ) the message began something like....

"Directions to Club Kaos are at the end of this message." so I held on just for kicks, and indeed the directions were there. I, however, did not need them. I got my directions off the web using an address finder and looking at the lovely map that is provided along with the address.

Okay, so since I'm here, I'll comment a bit. I made a point of picking up a copy of Jim Matheos' "First Impressions", since a kind Jammer mentioned it in one of last week's posts. Wow! This is great stuff. It's Mr. Matheos playing finger-style acoustic guitar (the guitar tone sounds too bright to be a nylong string (classical) guitar, yet he plays it like a classical guitar. He is accompanied by cello and violin on some of the tracks, and solo on the rest.

It would have been nice to meet Chris Oates, but I didn't realize the guy who so coldly said "That's right." when I noticed his older Ytsejam t-shirt and said "Hey! Ytsejam!" was actually Mr. Oates. I found out later. Sorry we didn't meet.

Yes, Mike Portnoy was there. Yes I got to chat with him for a bit. Yes he is very cool. His wife Marlene is cool too. Not a surprise. :)

And again, got to hang at everybody's favorite late-night eatery Denny's (ugh!) with Mosh, his very cool pal Joe from L.A., Steve Yanos, and Matt Guillory. Those guys are fucking *blast*, if I do say so myself. Looking forward to the next Club Kaos extravaganza.

And to cap off a fun-filled weekend with Mosh and Joe, we (as Mosh mentioned earlier) ran into Steve Perry (of Journey) at a diner in downtown San Francisco. Fun fun.

On another note, I took Aaron "DJ Kuul A" Silverman's advice and went to check out Fish the other night. Goodness! I'm not even a Fish fan and the show he and the band put on was one of the most kick-ass shows I've seen in a while. Nor have I seen such an enthusiastic and dedicated audience in a while.

As a fellow music theory nut (and a third-year student), I found myself wondering the same thing a few years ago. The scale in question is the fifth mode of the harmonic scale, which is called Phrygian Dominant.

I don't know of names for the other modes derived from Harmonic Minor, but a few are neat to me. The third degree is a major scale with an augmented 5, the fourth degree is Dorian with an augmented 4, and the sixth degree is Lydian with an augmented 2.

None of these modes are very stable, of course, but they're interesting to my ear.

This is serious horse shit from both of you. These are publicly relevant issues in a public forum. And you would never speak to me in person, in private, the way you wrote in private e-mail. I don't take kindly to people saying things on the net that they know damned well they wouldn't dare say in person.

his flame *did* deserve that kind of response, imo. i've seen far worse on this list, so who cares :-)

lets get back to bashing mike bahr and thrashing dream theater...

    ;-) _____

to finish off this complete and utter waste of bandwidth, here is my take on the whole bahr controversy...

Fact 1: as long as there are die-hard fans, there will be a demand for boots.

Fact 2: as long as there is a demand for boots, people will keep making them.

Fact 3: some bootleggers don't give a shit about the quality and contents of their bootlegs, as long as they sell.

Fact 4: mike bahr seems to care a lot about the content *and* the quality of the boots he releases.

with mike bahr, those who are interested in boots at least have a source where they know they

    1) are not going to get ripped off (no cd). jammers trust him. 2) won't end up with a recording they already have on another boot. 3) get the best possible sound/cd quality.

and if you don't like bootlegs or are dead against them, just don't buy them. it's as simple as that.

the best way for artists to stop bootlegging is to release official boots themselves. fish does this, and it seems to work really well. marillion also does this, but they're a lot less prolific than fish at it... :-) anyway, since dream theater is not going to release official boots any time soon, it's good to have a bootlegger who is on 'our side'.

    To Chris Ptacek :

"you never get over it... you get used to it". :-) _____
