Just to show you how much of a family this ytsejam really is, lemme fill
you in on something. Something that I'm sure has happened before and will
definitely happen again. See, back in about November of last year, I
posted to the 'jam about a band called Nouveaux. I subsequently got a
reply from one Dale R. Newberry. Well, Dale nad I have since become really
good friends because of the internet and the 'jam in particular. He's even
flying out from St. Louis and spending a weekend here in Phoenix with his
sister (who lives here) and myself, and we're going to the Megadeth concert
on Sunday. Any local (Phoenix or Tucson) jammers up for a ytse-JAM of some
kind, mail me and let's talk :) Are we all gettin' together before 'deth,
or what?!
Back on track...this type of this has happened to me quite a bit because I
find a lot of similarities between myself and other jammers. Musical
similarities, in my opinion, usually say a bit about a person's personality
and I've found that there are a lot more people like myself out there
(scarry fookin' thought, huh? :) Bottom line: The 'jam is a family, so
don't fookin forget it!

It looks like we have a winner. :) Brandon of the kingdom of Elhai
mentioned that there was an FM broadcast of a show from Denver on
11/22/94. I looked in the ol' tape bin and whaddya know! I had the show
and never even noticed it!! I used to do so much tape trading, I'd rarely
have time to listen to what I had. Anyway I popped in the tape and it
sounds _sweet_. I think I'll pick up Tap the Rockies (even though it was
listed at $32 in the ad) and offer it along with the rest of the stuff,
because it hopefully will not have some of the FM static and other faults
my tape has... such as that Pull Me Under and Metropolis are almost
entirely cut. So we don't know for sure that TTR is the Denver show, but I
think it's a little too close to be called a coincidence. :) I'll let you
all know how it sounds when I get it.. I'll send out the order tomorrow.
(I wonder if this was a really recent release. I had NEVER HEARD of it
before I saw the ad for it recently at the shop. And nothing from DT has
come out in a long time in the boot world. It may be new... if it's good,
those of you who are hardcore completist collectors will want to check
your local distributors for it. and hopefully you'll get it a hell of a
lot cheaper.)
A little bit of ironic trivia for everyone... on the tape sleeve
is listed the name and e-mail address of the person that sent it to me (an
old program called CaseLiner was usually used in trades to send the
setlists and such). Guess who it says I got it from?
Jeremy Haynes.
No kidding.
I don't remember _ever_ dealing with that thief in any trades.

I have never seen this much talk about one person on the jam. We've
discussed Mike Bahr more than Mike Portnoy.....Ah well, I wonder how many
new jammers have learned about Mike's projects and have bought CD's merely
because of the criticism he's received so much of recently? Bad publicity
is still publicity, I guess that's one good thing that could have come of
all this.....

any thoughts on Faith No More's new album? i just picked it up last night and i *REALLY* dig it. now, does anyone have any recommendations on the next FNM album i should check out? the only other material i'm familar with was that one tune "Epic" that got radio play several years ago. i dug the song quite a bit. oh, and i do have the first Mr Bungle disc (which rocks me severely), but i dunno if i'd count that as "FNM" material.

Anyhoo, how 'bout instead of saying, "I've been a member of this list for eight centuries, first as a monk, and then as Joan of Ark, and now a Ytsejammer...." we say how long we've been following Dream Theater? I mean, what was the first SONG that latched you onto the "craze" that most of us here feel when we press the PLAY button with DT in the spinner?
Yeah, I bought I&W first, 'cuz it had Pull Me Under and Take the Time, and they kicked ass, but nothin' prepared me...let me re-iterate that... N O T H I N G prepared me for that thunderous crunch on tracks 7 and 8 on Awake. The solo on Lie is like...perfect. :) I wish JP would do more of that light-speed legato/trem-pick/secret weapon technique kind of soloing, personally!
Anyhoo, I love all the songs I've heard from Dream Theater. Each and every one of them has something magical (like that psycho snare roll on 6:00's intro!, or well...too many highlights to point out, fuggit). From what I've heard off the new album, I think I'm going to enjoy this one thoroughly as well. It's definitely gonna be different than the others, but I wouldn't mean that in a demeaning fashion.
I mean, Another Day is far and beyond "different" when compared to "Space Dye Vest" yet both songs fit perfectly on thier respective albums (that's another thing that kicks ass! DT has congruity in thier discs! It's not the industry standard, "Well, make up a bunch of songs and slap 'em on there," ala Cardigans or Korn or....) and more importantly to my point, BOTH SONGS KICK MONSTER YTSEJAMMER ASS!
Does this make me a die-hard nerd w/o a brain who believes "if it's made by Dream Theater, it's the best?" or is it an open mind which allows me to do this? (Wow, my ass tasted pretty sweet with that kiss!) Give me a call, I'm here with Dennis Miller, and we want to know what you think.
I've been a member of this list for almost a year, but I think you'll agree, that doesn't mean shit. :) Yeah, I used a happy smile after the word shit, sue me. =>8^P~ ~ ~ That's just my pet peeve about a lot of these posts. And the actual term "pet peeve" is another, now that I think about it....

I'll just make my statement now and get it over with. I would never accuse DT of "selling out" - any band that opens a cd with "A New Millenium" hasn't sold out. I _do_ believe that they are under pressure from EastWest to have commercial success with this album, and I think bringing in Desmond Child is all the proof I need. Somehow I don't think DT would have done that on their own...
But that's my opinion. I, personally, can't wait to hear it, and have none of the feelings I had about two of my other favorites that have released CD's I didn't like. I think this will be a good one...

That asshole probably got that show from me, along with 9 other tapes. He returned none. Anyway, I got that show directly from the jammer who taped it from the radio. I can't recall the jammer's name, but this was the first bootleg from the 'Waking Up the World Tour' that I think was available, other than audience recordings of the northeast shows. The DJ ramble at the beginning, "I don't know whether we snuck in, or if they let us in because we're so cool, but we have it for you." The show is definitely from Denver, but James keeps calling it Den-vah. Great show.

Heh. New YTSEJAM rule after about 9/30: All DT posts are OFF-TOPIC. :)
I fear it already. I was thinking about it in the car yesterday. The thing is, I remember when Awake and ACOS came out, there was a lot of discussion of the material, a lot of interpretations, and a LOT of dissenting opinions on whether the stuff was any good or not. I think that when people look back, they're only remembering the *good* old days. The flames and bullshit were always here, it's just that the memory of a truly good post sticks in your head more than an inane flame. (I still vaguely remember some theory posts from my first month on the jam. I almost unsubscribed because it seemed like everyone on the list was WAY too musically advanced for me. :))

Send offers. I originally paid $49+ for it.
I'm only asking $30, since it's been awhile and I need to get rid of it. Price includes me paying the shipping.

You know, I was at the clinic JP held here in Tampa, and I was listening to the new songs and I'm like "well, that's excelent songwriting, but I don't see him really going at the jugular with his guitar playing...". Which he doesn't - this might be the less guitar-shred record so far. But then he plays those two songs he did for the video-game (I don't remember the name and I'm not a big game fan anymore), and I went fucking nuts! Both songs kicked total ass. Me and John Gilbert, the other jammer from the Tampa area, both agree that someone should make a compilation of guitar music in video games... this could kick some serious ass, and bring some attention back to guitar players who can play... And since JP's songs were 1.5 and 2.5 minutes long, which I assume is probably the average for game songs, on a CD like that, having 70 minutes of music, you could crank 35 songs in it :-)
>Anyhoo, I love all the songs I've heard from Dream Theater.
Ditto. It took me a while to get into some of them (especially the Charlie era stuff and the mellower stuff in I&W - I was seriously into thrash when that came out :-)). But now I think DT is one of the most perfect bands out there... I can't think of any other band that combines shredding with emotion so well... though Angra comes to mind :-)

Hello
Anybody who cares to listen to some new music, check out those MP3's I am partly responsible for generating. They're at Mosh's site, specifically ftp://progmetal.gmsnet.com/incoming/vsp/ and the directory includes the playlist for WinAmp. It's an entire instrumental album and the files tend to be pretty big. (They're 44,1 KHz, 16 bit, and the songs sometimes clock over 7 minutes.)
The band (or rather the project, as the name insists) is called VSP Projekt and the music was recorded in 1988. I can't classify it in any way, but I guess it has its place somewhere on the jazz/fusion shelf.
If you check them out, let me know what you think. :-)
