    Ahoy,

Hey 'jammers! I finally got moved in here at college and got my net access
hooked up. I'm only writing this to say, "Hey - I'm back... and it is
cool." Is there any world-breaking news that I have missed during the past
3 days? Respond private if you feel there is something that I can't
possibly live without knowing. Thanks -

I was just wondering if anyone out there has seen the Lilith Fair show. I
missed it when they came by NYC. It sounds like a great event...and cool
place to meet women. I read that some of the shows were 75% women...
Besides, Sarah McLaughlin is very cool.

    Hi there!

Well, that's my first posting to the Jam, after a long time just reading it.
I don't know if you all know this, but I don't think so:

In I&W Album MP loses the timing (I dunno if that's the right word)!
Just listen to Metropolis since the 2:00 minutes mark. Pay attention to the
beat, it's just snare and bass drum, one after another. Exactly at 2:06 he
starts missing the timing, and the most hard missing happens exactly at
2:07 going to 2:08. Just listen to it, marking the time, and you'll be able
    to listen it.

Yes, I know it isn't something HORRIBLE. Actually, I'm just making a comment.

Note: I hope you could understand, because, as you could see, my English is
    not perfect.

    See ya'

Mike, that is the weakest pile of bullshit I've seen from you to date. I
lost some respect for you when you actually went so low as to post private
mail on the jam intentionally (hell, I got chewed out by a couple of people
a few months ago for doing that *accidentally*), but this is ridiculous...
just admit it was wrong to post it to the Jam, and fuck off. We don't want
to hear your stupid excuses. Now I know there's no laws that say Internet
e-mail is private, but obviously it's common practice to keep private mail
that way as a common courtesy.

Private mail is private mail. If they wanted to post those messages to the
Jam, don't you think they would have? Just because YOU think it might be
appropriate to address the issues they brought up in private mail ont he
Jam doesn't give you the right to post THEIR mail publically. You could've
addressed these issues without quoting what they wrote to you in private.

And getting back to your excuses, why don't you just stop replying to
people's messages if you're going to dodge the points being made? Whether
people would say what they say on the net in preson is totally irrelevant,
and furthermore, it's not something you should take exception to. The
Internet IS NOT A NATURAL WAY OF COMMUNICATING! That's the way it is and
will be. Deal with it! Don't try and force people to act differently than
they would when they're writing to you just because they "wouldn't say it
to your face". That's just as annoying as politically correct people who
take offense to just about everything, when none was intended. On one hand
you've preached your disdain for PC zealots on the Jam, and now you're
    being exactly like them.

BTW, I'd have posted this privately... but you obviously can't be trusted
    to keep something private.

The jam used to be more like "your family" and now we are "your greatest
market" ???? YUCK !! When I first read that, I wanted to puke !! Your
Greatest Market has reportedly supported you through school, into a
truck and had to have subsidized your purchase of a lot of really cool
electronic equipment. We deserve a lot better.

Mike, you seem to have changed. It used to be "Mike the cool dude who
helps us out by making CDs". Now, you seem (at least on the jam - and I
quite clearly dont know you in person) to be quite bitter. Quick to
judge, quick to anger, slow to understand, if you will. When you get
criticized in public (even negatively), I would pause for a minute
before immediately re-loading and think about the lasting effects of
your actions. Remember that in life, cool people get treated like cool
people and businessmen get treated like businessmen. You can only wear
both hats if you carefully disguise one of them.

C'mon Mike !! Please return to your old self !!

    First off, it's McLachlan. Thanks.

Second, I didn't see the show, but heard it kicked serious ass. :)

Third, the trick is not to look for a woman who merely likes Sarah
McLachlan, but to find one who also likes Dream Theater. Then what you
need to do is open her ears to Enchant, Angra, Symphony X, Fates
Warning...you get the picture. Do women like this even exist? Yes, but
they're about as rare as the DT boot "Images & Tour!" Damn I wish I could

The excitement of the Fates/Enchant show in Fremont has faded a bit, it being
Monday and all, but I would just like to add a bit to the comments of Chris
Oates ("meter man"), and Dr. Mosh...

Enchant went on really late, without more than 10 minutes to soundcheck, but
played a great set nonetheless. I think their music is fantastic in a live
setting; for some reason I think this talented band loses a little bit of its
luster when imprinted in 1's and 0's on a CD. Regardless, they were fantastic
live. They were having some problems with equipment, I think due to the
club's sketchy PA system, and Ted (singer) and Doug (guitarist) were getting
frequent electric shocks (!!). Both were visibly pissed off during the show,
and Doug's anger lingered for the entire evening. I saw him later and he was
in a foul mood, which he apologized for while signing my Wounded CD - he
mentioned something about "never playing here again," and "getting shocks up
his ass all night". He had also cut his hand at some point. Still, the set
was impressive (albeit short - the whole show was delayed about two hours, and
I think Enchant had to cut a song or two) and I was psyched to be able to pick
up the "Time Lost" EP. They played tunes from all three discs. Oh yeah: and
the thrill of seeing one MIKE. PORTNOY. on stage again (playing with Enchant
on AIC's 'Would') after so long was quite a natural high.. MP was really laid
back when we spoke to him briefly after Enchant's set.

Heard a little bit of FII, including the non-MP3 version of "You Not Me", over
the PA system before Fates went on. Unfortunately, the PA system's EQ must
have been set to MEGA-BASS with not a hint of treble. All I could hear was
Myung, the bass drum, and a little of the lows in James' voice.

Fates went on near midnight (actually, as Chris Oates noted, they started at
precisely the time which is printed on the Enchant "Time Lost" CD). I won't
post too many details or the setlist, all of which has been done to death, but
they were fantastic. Ray is one powerful vocalist, Jim is one soulful guy,
Joey is a very tasteful bassist (and singer), and Zonder is a metronome on an
acid trip. I don't think the keyboardist fit into the band all that well, but
I think he may be just along for the tour.

Summary: Fates was on fire, Enchant was dead-on in spite of difficult
circumstances, MIKE. PORTNOY. was there, new DT was played during the break...
What a night for progressive music. And, with Paul Craddack, Mark Zonder,
and Mike Portnoy in the same building, what a spectacle for drummers..

It was great meeting all you jammers! Chris, Dr. Mosh, and everyone else
    whose name I can't remember..

    jam on,
    -Neil.

PS - Mosh: How'd that DAT come out? =)

Dream Theater content... I know its been there for those who saw
it, but I don't think I ever mentioned it on the Jam: if anyone's having
trouble fetching the You Not Me MP3 from Doc or Swifty's page, I've also
placed it in the sound page of the Prism Records page (URL in my signature
below). It's free for all to use. Goodnet is a _terrible_ server
speed-wise, so you'll want to try the others first, I think. I think we're
only on a friggin' T3, not an OC-3 or whatever the standard is now.

Take care all! New page update tonight or tomorrow!!

"You know what I hate? Boots that are more than 74 minutes on a CD. It's
a pain to have to rip the data from them onto my drive, and cut some
useless crowd noise until it comes in under the limit. It's so much easier
when the CD is shorter and I can just copy it. :)"

My view on the ongoing saga of Mike Bahr...

SHUT THE FUCK UP, ALL OF YOU! YOU, AND YOU, AND YOU, AND YOU!
What point is it going to serve if Mike quits advertising new CDs here?
What fuckin elated amotion are you going to get by ending this? Are you
gonna fucking orgasm when Skadz intervenes and say, "Fine, Mike's not
posting his lists here anymore?" I don't think so. This altogether is
bullshit. Everything's been so fucking peaceful then someone (Wherry, I
believe) says one thing, and the whole fucking jam explodes. You people
have wasted more "jamwidth" in the last month bitching about this than
Mikehas used up in the last 3 years of posting his info to the 'jam. I've
got 4 of Mike's boots, and I guess that's my fucking problem. If I wanna
blow $100 that way, I guess I lost out, heh? Strange though how I
remember seeing Chris Ptacek's name on the list for Precious Things CD's
right next to mine, though. Hrm... Fuck this. That's all you here from
    me about it.

Chris offers some good suggestions here. Unfortunately, not everyone
has web access, and not everyone has an http server to use, or the desire or
know-how to serve up HTML for what is normally a one-time deal. For infrequent
commercial postings from non-vendors, I think a limited e-mail policy could be
    acceptable to everyone.

I know that I like and take advantage of some of the offers made here
on the ytsejam - t-shirts, superior CD, bootlegs. But even I was annoyed
by those massive posts we used to get every day for window stickers that
    were like 50% blank lines.

I would also appreciate it if jammers looking to unload unwanted stuff
would offer it to the jam before offering it to the whole internet or their
local $2/CD trade-in place. I would much rather find something like
Lillian Axe's Psychoschizophrenia CD while browsing the jam than scouring
through stacks of mis-sorted CDs at the local shops and record shows.

Here is my proposal for a policy on commercial postings for
    the mailing list:

    1. Offer must be posted by a subscriber.
    2. Products must be Dream Theater or "related-band" related.
    3. Postings must be brief.
I recommend one line per item with quantity, description & price.
        Maximum number of items 15-20.
Anything other than that could be posted as a
"I'm selling a bunch of blahblahblah, email me at blah@blah
for details or check out my web page at www.blahblahblah"
    4. Auctions must be conducted off the mailing list. Postings
would solicit offers (to be given in private email) only.
Notifying bidders of current high bid must be done by
        private email also.
    5. Reposts/updates must wait two weeks. Maximum number of
attempts to sell same crap should be limited to 3.
    6. Subscribers limited to one commercial-type posting per week.
    7. Seller must post contact information for additional information.
        Examples: URL, e-mail address, newsgroup
    8. No reasons for sale necessary or, at times, desired. If a
subscriber is looking for a reason, contact the seller thru
        private e-mail.
    9. No justification of prices necessary or, at times, desired.
If a subscriber is looking for a price justification, contact
        the seller thru private e-mail.
    10. All communications with seller must take place in private e-mail,
not the mailing list. This includes: auctions, offers, counter-offers,
        flames, complaints, questions, etc.
    11. Complaints about the mailing lists commercial policy (once
implemented) must be directed to list manager.
    12. Abuse of policy should be reported to list manager. Supplemental,
private, flames to abuser are good too.
    13. Rules for commercial postings would not apply to tape trees,
tape swaps, offers for trading, offers for copying, offers
for finding rare stuff, and other acts of good will.
    14. Scams (offering items without delivering items) and scammers
should be reported to the list and the list manager.
    15. Postings like "I'm a dumbass and I just deleted the jam that
had an offer I was interested in. Could you please repost."
should be answered via private e-mail by the seller or
        some good Jamaritan.

What does everyone think of this? Feel free to comment, flame,
supplement, redact, ignore, enchance, re-write in bureaucratese,
    or whatever...
