I don't know about that part, but there is a part in ACoS <in "The Crimson
Sunset" where he goes into 12/8 and hits the hat <or the splash--I'm not
sure which> on the second eighth of each triplet and his timing gets way
    off.

Great show indeed - I was there (also at DT's first Denver show in June
'93, at the same hall, the Mammoth on Colfax) and I also taped it off the
air (KBPI radio _used to_ be a good station), BUT I didn't find the Ytsejam
until the next April, so never sent any copies out. 'Course, if anybody
wants one now, I could prolly dub some. I was just listening to this tape
last weekend, driving back to Denver from Tennessee, and yup, James kept
saying "Ahhrroight, Denvaaaahh!" The DJ commented on it after they played
back the show (which was the following Sunday night). This was the show
where JM's bass rig died near the end of LSOaD - man was he pissed!

I remember everybody going "Who's the short-haired dude in the baggy shorts
playing keys?" - first time we'd seen Derek, and he was awesome, but sure
didn't look like a member of DT at the time. He did what sounded like a
false start on "Another Day", and James stopped it, then said something
like "By the way, that was NOT a Derek mistake", laughing. Another first
    - James managed to get the word "fuck" out over the airwaves, even though
somebody was trying to bleep him - they bleeped "fun" and James said "fuck"
right after that. Referring to all the equipment problems and the "thin
air" that was bothering him . . .

    "We're havin' lot of fu . . . (bleep) tonight . . . this ain't fuckin'
    working!"

And guess who opened for DT that night - yup, you guessed it - Fates! Ah,
    the memories . . . and speaking of memory . . .

For Boston area Ytsejammers, I was just looking at WAAF's page, and
they have a request link from their home page (www.waaf.com), so I
think its time to start bombarding them w/ requests for YNM. Should
try to get one person per host to do so... ;) although it would be a
fairly easy Perl program to auto-submit requests every so often... ;)

No offense, but if I have to go to those kind of lengths to find a mistake, I'll just call the damn thing right. :)

BTW, it is one of the OTHER knocks on the people on this list that they tend to pick apart DT's stuff looking for minute flaws. Simple way to counteract that: Come to grips with the fact that the band is human (well, mostly).

Hey, folks. I just wanted to take a minute to let you guys know that I have a new e-mail address, here at my new digs in Virginia. Someday soon, when I plow myself out from under all these jams I haven't read, I will post about the Fates show I got to enjoy earlier this month with Saveur, Madden, Pat, Taco Belhai, and everyone else that was there. (Funny how much Queensryche looked like Divine Regale that night. :)

So, the FAQ is in its new home, and you can use either of the addresses in my .sig to get in touch with me. And, someday soon, I will be all caught up with mail, and I might actually have time to respond to some. :)

Any news about a DT single being in record stores yet? If so, e-mail me. I don't want to miss that! :)

Just thought I'd mention what Mike's looking like these days, having met him at the Enchant/Fates show last Friday. Well, he cut his hair pretty short, like about halfway down his neck, and he has blonde streaks running through his hair. And instead of a beard, there's a kempt goatee. He was wearing a backwards baseball cap most of the night, but after the show when some of the Fates guys came out of the bus to say 'hi', Mike took off the cap revealing the blond in his hair.

Just in case any of you hair-freaks were wondering.

I don't know about the rest of you that haven't yet heard TAMP, but I have really high expectations for that song. I just listened to Not what you See on Savatage's DWD, and that song gives me goosebumps. I haven't ever heard a song with so much emotion in it. The only area where DT isn't my fave band is in writing powerful, touching, emotional songs. In this area, the 'tage takes the cake with songs like Old City Bar, Alone you Breathe, Believe, etc...

If anyone that's heard Tamp wants to compare it with his/her favorite "emotional" songs I'd be grateful.

I'm not really sure whether there's much here for Mike Bahr to agree with, but I'm sure he agrees anyway.

    Just curious

Anybody out there heard anything by Lake of Tears?

A reviewer just gave their latest a Record of the Month Award

They are available at Music Blvd and not expensive either.

I just ordered Episode from Stratovarius from these guys and I'm hopin to see it sometime this year. They weren't rated very highly in the category of "on time delivery" though. How have you jammers been making out with this company?

Hey Vince....Eddy Webb Sux anyway...I had to quit listenin to KUPD yesterday at work cause this moron kinda forgot that not EVERYBODY IN FOOKIN PHOENIX wants to hear ALTERNATIVE SHIT for 4 freakin hours!~!~!~! Think I'll E-Mail him now and ask if I can get behind HIM.. (if ya no wut i meen)

Someone said they remember when Awake came out how tracks 7 & 8 just grabbed them.....Shit, me too. I think I listened to those over & over about 2 hours straight the day I bought it (my wife ran over to the neighbors until I was finished) : )

I now feel that Awake is the finest recording that I have ever had the pleasure of hearing, and I ain't no newbie either. Been listenin to metal and prog stuff (and drivin my friends nuts) for about 25 years now (yes I am 38 years old) This is THE perfect album for me both in terms of production and performance. This is one of those discs that brings your stereo system to life...It even sounds sooo good on a mediocre car system like mine. I work with a guy from Iran who ONLY listens to Classical music. He hates all american music. We were listenin to Awake one evening and when SDV came on he sat up and listened very intently until it was over, then he played it again 3 more times. Hey Mikey..He Liked It! He said it had a beautiful classical feel and melody line..reminded him of somebody like Beethoven or someone. Kewl.

I'm interested in hearing differing opinions. In my mind the production on I&W removes it from serious consideration for a perfect recording (suit on) A recording is half performance and half production and neither can be sacrificed if the intention is to convey an accurate reproduction of a musical event in your listening room. For the same reason your Hi-Fi setup should be audiophile quality as well if you are to be able to judge a recording properly. Okay I'll stop ramblin now

Pedro Prado keeps writing stuff about how MP misses a beat in Metropolis between 2:07 and 2:08. First off, my husband and I are both drummers, and the neighbors hate us! I hate to tell you this, but we listened to it a few times (actually, I played it about 10 times), and we came to the conclusion (he faster than I) that MP is just playing a two measure rhythm *IN 4/4* and does not miss a beat. He merely plays a pattern within the time span of three eighth notes four times and ends with a pattern within the time span of four eighth notes and winds up at the end of two measures. In other words, he would play in 3+3+3+3+4, which equals 16 eighth notes or two measures of 4/4. This is perfectly acceptable, since the rest of the band is still playing in 4/4 and they all catch up with each other at the end of that section. I really hope you get to go to one of his clinics because he goes over the fact that the band writes music in sections, and they each basically play in whatever time signature they want to within each section and meet up at the end. Did that make sense? Of course, I'm paraphrasing what he said. But anyway, Portnoy's right. :) Hope this helps!

To give you an idea... 'Mouth to Mouth' sounds like something out of The Real Thing, and 'Collision' sounds like its out of Angel Dust. AOTY is pretty much like a collage of all their other albums, so if you liked the whole album, you might as well get all of their CDs.

    >mean, what was the first SONG that latched you onto the "craze" that most >of us here feel when we press the PLAY button with DT in the spinner?

Definitely Metropolis. At first I was simply amazed from a technical standpoint (shit, I was showing the instrumental part to all my friends), but that made me pay more attention to the whole album.

    >You know, I was at the clinic JP held here in Tampa, and I was listening to >the new songs and I'm like "well, that's excelent songwriting, but I don't >see him really going at the jugular with his guitar playing...". Which he >doesn't - this might be the less guitar-shred record so far. But then he

]From what I've heard, while the solos themselves are a little more laid back, he still plays some really fucked up shit during the instrumentals. Especially when he's doing unison stuff w/ Derek.

    >Vince: If their record label isn't going to get behind them why should we? > >

You need to reply saying : "Because they're good. Or are you just a greedy black hole that only plays things when the record companies pays ya? Huh?"

    :D

    >Well, I listened to it again and I still think he misses the timing. I >would ask you to listen it again, and pay attention to the mark of 2:07 >going to 2:08. It's a VERY soft missing, but it's there! Mark the timing

Well, if you've ever used a sequencer. there's this thing called quantisizing. It makes music sound more 'human' by adding 'errors'. If somebody played everything straight on the beat, it would sound like a machine...and it's pretty much impossible to play everything perfectly on the beat (unless you're Mark Zonder:). Those 'mistakes' are what make music 'human' and gives it groove.

Yeah, if it were only so simple. KUPD's the valley's ONLY hard rock/metal station still in the biz out here. If _I_ had to give up KUPD, that'd leave me with the options of 2 alternative stations, 1 really festering hip hop station, and about 50 country stations (not including the Mexican channels!) Not an appetizing palette. Of course, there's always that huge fuckin' pack of CD's sitting in front of my radio...

Yup. Anybody else notice how many prog guitarists are named Steve? Howe, Hillage, Rothery, Vai, Hackett...

    > Here are whom I regard as the best prog dummers out on the scene in > recent times (and of what I've listened to...) > > [Peart, Portnoy, Zonder, Craddack, Soffera]

It is a federal crime to mention prog drummers and skip Bill Bruford. :) Keyboard Magazine, in Oct 1993, had a list of nine qualities a band could have; it's a prog band if they have 5 of 9. Number 6 was "Bill Bruford was their drummer at some point." He's played in Yes, UK, King Crimson (see below), National Health, etc etc etc. He's one of the few rock drummers (though his solo stuff is jazz) that I'd say could out-play the above five, though not by much. (IMHO, for those that don't realize it's implied.)

And speaking of Bill Bruford, he's currently in King Crimson, who have a 'double trio' lineup at the moment: two guitars, two basses, and two drummers. They do some weird-ass shit like this on "Thrak," specifically the song "Sex Sleep Eat Drink Dream". I can't follow it myself (damnit, Jim, I'm an engineer, not a musician!), but r.m.p claims one trio plays in 5/8 and the other in 7/8, and they meet up 35 eighth-notes later, or something like that.

For those that might want to try the album, I suggest finding somewhere that'll let you try before you buy. They go from Beatles-esque to what can only be called "Progressive Industrial Noise" on this disc, so it's hard to compare it to anything else.

One of very few CD's that I can still listen to like it was the first time. In fact I think I'll go glue that magazine into my CD player now.
