Well, every December in Pensacola, TK-101 plays the crap out of "I
Believe In Father Christmas." The most notable track I've heard on TK
(besides the first time I ever heard Pull Me Under) is YYZ+drum solo
from Exit...Stage Left. I heard that at about 3:30 AM back in February
of this year. I haven't ben able to listen to this station since I
moved, though. As far as Yes goes, they like to play "Long Distance
Runaround" and "Siberian Khatru" (I think that's a particular DJ's
preference, though) pretty regularly on TK-101. It's a shame that
there's nothing to listen to in Auburn besides a CD player....

    Take care, everyone,
    Mark

Before I post this, I must say I am NOT a vocalist, nor do I pretend to be any kind of authority on how to fix your voice. I do however, know a couple of things that you may find helpful (or even completely useless)

If you're sick: I've known 2 excellent rock vocalists who, when they were sick and had to sing, would hold their head over a humidifier with their head covered in a towel before the show. They both swear it works to loosen everything up and get your voice clear.

Showtime - sick or not: Lemons and peppers (like jalepeno, etc..) may not be a good thing to eat the night of a show. They both make your diaphram constrict which can completely alter everything for a good vocalist. Ever get the hiccups from eating something with a pepper or lemon in it?

Anytime: Avoiding swallowing sharp or coarse objects such as Jax, thumbtacks, steel wool, small cacti (or large cacti for that matter), and fishing lures. Although the temptation is strong for many of us, the use, abuse, and ingestion of these types of objects can really put a damper on a long night of singing your favorite King Diamond covers. There ya have it, vocal tips from a guitar player ;)

PS - Placed my advance order for FII today from CDNOW, and for the 30 days I can be found under a tree next to my mailbox. For anyone here who doesn't know how/where to order it, just go to my web page and there is a link to order any official DT release. FII is only $13.96 plus $2.49 shipping if you get it there.

Ok, I've set up a page on my Web site totally dedicated to getting DT airplay. However, it's looking a little scarce. If we're going to write to all the radio stations around the country and request DT, EVERYONE needs to do it. WAAF is already there... I think they're a good place to start. ;)

Please submit your local radio station (college stations included) in the form of callsign, frequency, city, state, e-mail addy, and Web page to me, and I'll make sure it's included. Oh, and try to send the program director's e-mail if possible (since we all know the DJs are mostly monkeys ;) Everyone else: MAIL THESE PPL! This only works if we all do it.

Any doubt? O'course they DIDN'T win. MTV sucks, so do their watchers and the people who PAY to vote for the clips. (I don't know in the US, but here, to ask for some video or vote for something on MTV, it's a 0900 phone number, that is, you have to pay, and it's not cheap.) Is there anyway of reaching his boss or something, or is he the only bum that reads e-mail in that shit? Man, is that a way of getting new listeners to your radio or what? =) I hope the rock radios here will play DT... I've already bought two CD's with them, and they're very reliable. The first CD arrived in one month, while the other got here in 15 days! (I'm Brazil, they come from the Netherlands if I'm not wrong, not to say about customs and stuff...) Their price may not be the cheapest, but they have some rare stuff there, the S&H is only $3 bucks for international shippings regardless of the number of CD's. And, at least for us brazilians, they do something cool: they lie about the prices of the CD's, so the customs won't charge you any tax and stuff. =)

Hi all! I just wanted to say that all the stuff I wrote about MP's drumming mistakes, wasn't written to "offend" him, or any of his fans ('jamers). I just wrote it to make a point: he's humen. I never said he's a lousy drummer. never. I just tried to make some people understand that. people who wrote that is impossible for him to make a mistake, and we think he made one, that's only because we're to dumb to understand his music. We, as much as he, can make meestaiks. that's all I guess. Hagai Sadot

That would be Gary Hoey. Our local rock station here in Portland, Oregon, 101.1 KUFO, has "monoige-a-troi"(sp?) weekends, where they play three back-to-back songs by artists all weekend long. It's pretty cool, although like most of you I don't tune in to the radio alot. I have heard Gary Hoey a few times, and they've played this Low Rider song, as well as his rendition of Linus & Lucy, Wipeout (yeah, the surfing song), Hocus Pocus, and my favorite of all them, "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring" by Bach (this song rips! 8^).

Speaking of radio, I emailed Al Scott, the music director of KUFO yesterday; I have sorta high hopes, because over the last year or two KUFO has slowly been getting harder and a little more "out there". Among the triple-shots they play on the weekend, I've heard Tool a few times ("H" kicks! =), and they've started playing really old Metallica lately.

Wow, this is too wierd. Just as I went to cut-n-paste the email I sent to him, I got a reply! Ok, so here's my original email plus his reply at the bottom.

    ---------------

    Hey Al!

First let me say that I've been a fan of yours for quite some time. You were a great voice on a great radio station, down in Eugene on KLCS. A couple years after that operation tanked, I moved up here to Portland and was overjoyed to hear your voice on the air again (not that I can hear it while I'm at work, but it's the principle of the thing, ya know? ;) I remember in the last few months of KLCS' existence, you would lament late at night that there was probably nobody out there listening to you. Well, I was there and your show was a welcome backdrop to my late-night suffering while in college.

Ok, is that enough sucking up? Is my nose good and brown now? Good. Because not only are you a cool DJ, but I just found out from your website that you're also KUFO's music director. So I wanted to run a small request by you. My favorite band in the whole world is releasing their new album on September 23, and the word on the 'net is that a single has been released and is making it to radio stations in various parts of the country. I just heard today it was recently played on a station in Minneapolis, and I would love to see it get some rotation here in the Portland area.

The band is Dream Theater, the new album is called 'Falling into Infinity', and the single is either 'You Not Me' or 'Burning My Soul' (original rumor was that the former was going to be released first, but the latter is what has popped up on a few radio stations across the country). I know this wouldn't be a huge stretch for KUFO, because I know that their last big single, 'Pull Me Under', get a moderate amount of airplay on KUFO back in 1993.

It may seem silly to worry about getting a band radio airplay (it's not like I'm going to miss buying the album when it's first released), but this is a semi-organized movement by an internet mailing list called the 'ytsejam', which has over 1100 members worldwide, and is dedicated to the discussion and dissemination of information about our favorite progressive-metal band, Dream Theater (FYI, 'ytsejam' was the name of a song on their first album, and is Majesty spelled backwards...their band name before discovering it was already taken by another band).

The ytsejam played a big part in getting this album released, by organizing an online petition last winter asking Dream Theater's label, Elektra, to hurry up and get DT's asses in the studio to record an album. This petition ended up containing over 2,500 signatures and comments, and was several hundred pages long (you can view it at http://www.prognosis.com/petition/current.html). The word from DT's drummer, Mike Portnoy, is that this opened their management's eyes, and they started recording a couple months thereafter.

The reason I'm writing to you now is that it appears the label still isn't getting the hint that these talented musicians need to be promoted, and it seems that some radio stations are ignoring them because of that (one comment was recently forwarded from a DJ that said, "their label isn't supporting them, so why should we?"). I realize that radio is a business and that the bottom line is what ultimately rules, but all of us feel so strongly that if this great band was simply given a chance, that success would follow based on their excellent musicianship and talented songwriting, despite the lack of any promotion, and despite the fact that they're not grunge and therefore not "in". By doing what their label should be doing and promoting them to our local radio station, we the fans hope to make this latest album a smashing success and force the label to open its eyes so the future of Dream Theater is never in doubt again.

I know this all sounds kind of nutty, and I don't blame you if you simply think of me as another fan-geek. But I hope you can see some parallels here between Dream Theater and a couple other bands that are in your regular rotation...Met"AL"lica and Rush. Rush was a cult favorite before finally breaking out with Moving Pictures in 1981, and I'm sure you're very familiar with Metallica's story...an underground hit for years, once 'One' and 'The Black Album' gained mainstream popularity radio couldn't get enough of 'em. I'm thrilled that KUFO has started playing the old 'tallica songs on a regular basis, and I would love to see you live up to your namesake of "cutting edge" and promote this band while they're still living by the skin of their diehard fans' support.

So that's it. When you get the new Dream Theater single, give it a spin or two. I and several thousand other people would really appreciate it.

P.S. Sorry for making this so long. =) Have a great day!

Wow! That took me about a year to read. Yeah, I dug those Eugene days at KLCX. For us to play the new DREAM THEATER it would have to be a hit first. We don't break a lot of records here at KUFO. If you listen, all you hear is really familiar rock tunes. That's our deal...just the hits. It's not rocket science, but we do have a responsibility to our listeners to stay on the air with our format. If we played a lot of songs that just one or two people were into...nobody would listen. That's not to say that Dream Theater won't be a hit...but that's what it'll have to be before we play it. Thanks for listening....you rule! AL

    Ok, it's me again...

So there ya go. As we all knew by now, radio sucks. =) Note that I'm not including this guy's emailing address (although it's not hard to find on your own), because I don't think mass e-mailings are going to do any good (and besides, he did answer politely and wasn't a dick like that other guy). We've already made one DJ hate Dream Theater for the rest of his life, and I don't see how any music director would be swayed by a request from someone across the country.

HOWEVER, if there are any Portland area 'jammers, then by all means send this guy a quick email requesting Dream Theater. Now that I've broken the ice and he'll (hopefully) remember the name, then maybe we can show that there's more than "one or two" people who want to hear the single here in Portland. You can get Al's email address from www.kufo.com (or email me and I'll give it to you). PLEASE be polite, and you might want to consider not making any mention of this email from me. In other words, make it look like you're just another Joe on the street who wants to hear his favorite band. He already knows that there's an organized fan-base, now we just need to show him that the rest of John Q. Public cares.
