'Twas me. I left the lab almost immediately after the song ended, and
couldn't get "6:00" out of my head after that. I couldn't even remember
anything about "Missing," other than it sounded *so* much like "6:00."

    Maybe it's just me.

I was going to respond to this earlier, but decided against it. However, after
reading the following, I can't help myself.

    > Back in those very early days it probably had been all those Eastern
    > Algonquian societies who easily could have gotten rid of them, they weren't
    > those Spanish conquistadores

Let's state the facts here. The English, unlike the Spanish, Portugese, etc.,
didn't just come over here and start slaughtering people. They coexisted with
Native Americans for a time. They eventually became caught in the middle of
various inter-tribal wars and suffered greatly at the hands of various tribes,
which spawned the tragic "Indian policies" of the British, and later the
    American, government.

    > ... w/out being supported by Natives they
    > simply hadn't survived their first winter

I've never understood how people could buy this bull. Um, the English that came
here weren't blue-blooded royalty. Many of them had been farmers all their
lives. The Native Americans introduced them to some new crops, such as corn, and
some new planting techniques, but the English were far from helpless.

. and many regretted that they
    > were patient w/ them way too long to only have their hospitality exploited
    > (politely speaking here).

See my response to the first quote. Many tribes were not "hospitable" by any
    stretch of the imagination.

I'm not saying that the English were Saints, far from it. However, they don't
deserve the reputation for being helpless idiots who decided to slaughter people
    for no good reason.

Well, to join the thread (really, I'm not trying to make MFP list...
just have alot of different replies to past few jams...).

I have a German import of WDADU on Mechanic Records. The back liner
of the CD has the person being branded w/ the Majesty symbol, and the
CD itself has song titles listed on the bottom in a sort of brick
wallish sort of layout. I got it between Feb and April of '93, back
when there were only a few import shops ni the country that had it...

Also, about the Megadeath post... well, I have been stuck listning to
the radio on the way to and from work this week (normally listen to
CDs) and let me tell you, WAAF is overplaying the hell out of the new
Megadeath song. I hear it every day dboth driving out to and coming
home from work... and to tell you the truth... it sounds sort of
grungish to me... (might also be b/c it is played in the middle of
hte smae 3 or 4 other grunge songs every day)...

If I'm not mistaken (bad short-term memory :), I think it was the take on O Come All Ye Faithful (can't recall the exact name of the track). I got it last year or else I prbably would've snatched it up :). Oh, and to whoever it was that posted something about seeing part of a Savatage video where they started a show with Taunting Cobras, I saw that entire show at a record fair once not terribly long ago. I am kicking myself for not buying it (low on cash, though).

    Hey y'all,

I just heard Alan Ayo, the night DJ on 96-rock here in Atlanta, mention about DT tickets for the Masquerade show. Pretty wild! I was coming home from work in this shitty rain listening to 96 and all of a sudden I hear something like "...we have [so-and-so] and [so-and-so] tickets... and we have tickets we're gonna be giving away for Dream Theater at The Masquerade on Dec. 16."

Whoooahhh!! My mouth just dropped to the floor mat :O Shocked, yet pleased that at least one station has taken time to mention DT instead of the "Rolling Fossils" for once. About 20 minutes later, Ayo stated again "...we're still gonna be giving away Dream Theater tickets later especially since we've had so many calls about them coming to town." Cooool!!!! :) Even though they didn't play YNM or BMS afterwards, it was still pretty sweet to hear their name on Atlanta radio finally!!!

    Take the time, Brian

Btw, local DT fans: Email Alan Ayo at aayo@96rock.com I e-mailed him about an hour ago requesting YNM or BMS. Tomorrow I'm gonna request a classic, like PMU :)

Well, this was brought up before...and i believe someone mentioned thats its a total coincidence. They hadnt heard 6:00 b4 they wrote it..then someone brought Awake into the studio and they were left blabbergasted.

And it plausible...since really the only real similarity is that it starts with drums alone, followed by keys with a guitar-sound..ok, maybe i'm stretching 'only' here, but the point is, that the drum groove is totally different, and the keys melody as well.

Prog rock cliches? The one and only..CONCEPT ALBUMS. I really hate it when bands do concept albums with weak story lines. The only ones that really mean something to me (and could be made into a book or movie, IMO) are QR's O:M and Marillion's Brave and MC...with Tage's Streets and DWD coming in close (they tend to get rather corny at times).

I think it doesnt matter if you start with acoustic or electric...its still a piece of wood with string over it. Most parents say the 'acoustic' spiel, because it costs less money...and if its just a passing fad with the kid, they wont have lost that much money... So the only consideration is money. Remember if you buy an electric you also have to buy an amp...I started out with an Epiphone strat and a Crate GX-10...cost me somewhere between 300 and 400 bucks if i remember well.

Oh, and when you go to a store, go with a guitar-playing buddy, to be sure you buy a good guitar (within the price range).

(and never buy a Hondo!) hope that helps, Ernesto

Also, what's a good brand of guitar > (either electric or acoustic) to learn on? > Well, I guess everything depends on two things: 1)why you want it and 2)how serious you are. I've been a drummer for about 11 years and while we are a fun bunch to have at parties, it is often difficult for us (okay, ME) to communicate musical ideas to other musicians (my best line was "Play something that goes like (singing) la-la-la-la. Got it?") So, almost two years ago I decided to broaden my horizons and learn another instrument. I decided on guitar because it was portable (something which I really appreciate after lugging my drum set in and out of my car) and because I wanted to be able to write songs. I didn't want to be the next Satch, Vai, or JP. I just wanted to know enough chords to compose the basic skeleton of a song. I too went through the acoustic/electric debate. But I knew that if I got an electric, I'd need to get an amp, and then a distortion pedal, and my wallet would never forgive me. So I bought an acoustic for $100. What's also important to note is the electric and acoustic seem invoke different moods. For me an acoustic is great for coming up with ballads and more pop stuff (which is where my sensibilities lie anyway). An electric (especially with distortion) make me want to write something with more "balls and chunk," so to speak. If you want to write the latter, an acoustic usually doesn't give an accurate representation of what it will sound like on an electric. So, I guess what I'm saying is that it depends what you are looking to do. Personally, I'm content with writing the pop stuff and letting a "real" guitar player do the heavy stuff.

    Greetings ye 'jamanoids...

Dale inquired: >Okay, I've been meaning to post this for some time, but never did get >around to it. Anyway, I've been wanting to know if anyone could give >me any info on any bands (prog or not, even though most would fall >into the prog genre)/songs/etc. that have references to works by >J.R.R. Tolkien or C.S. Lewis (i.e. King's X's Out of the Silent >Planet).

I know you said to send this to private email, Dale, but I wanted to send this to the list because the ones I'm mentioning *everyone* should know about...

Two albums by Glass Hammer. The first one, entitled "Journey of the Dunadan," is a concept album based on the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy by Tolkien. It takes a few liberties with the story, but the music is absolutely top-notch. Tons of great keyboards ranging from ambient walls of synth sound to searing Hammond organ solos, with a powerful bass guitar sound (very reminiscent of Geddy Lee's playing), and some great guitar solos. The vocals run the gamut from good to strictly average, but the musicianship is outstanding. Get this NOW; it's just back in print and it's available at the band's site http://www.glasshammer.com/ .

Glass Hammer's second album, entitled "Perelandra," is if possible even better than "Journey of the Dunadan." This one leans heavily on C.S. Lewis's works, mostly themed on his "fairy tales for adults" series (_Out of the Silent Planet_, _Perelandra_, _That Hideous Strength_). The keyboards here are very majestic-sounding, and the album overall is even better sound-quality-wise than the first one. Less guitar soloing, but more keyboard soloing, and a more introspective, cooler feel than the first disc. Combines the best qualities of Yes, ELP, and prog-era Genesis. The vocals have also improved a great deal. The lyrics are very thoughtful stuff, well written. "Perelandra" too is available through the band's homepage.

If you like Glass Hammer's stuff, try out the other projects by DeArqe and Schendel: Wyzards, a heavier prog-rock band with lots and lots of guitars, and TMA-2, a project that the two of them call C.A.F.E. -- "Concept-Ambient-Fantasy-Electro." Needless to say, both discs are also worth getting. They aren't Lewis- or Tolkien-related, though, so I'll quit raving about them for now. :)

    Cheers, Phil

Ok, I'll listen to it once more doing some more serious analysis, but I don't remember any "Karn Evil 9" bits there... :-)

    :-)

    Haha! :-)

Well, power metal is something along the lines of Angra, Helloween, you know, those more melodic stuff. Some call it melodic heavy metal (perfect example: Helloween's "Eagle Fly Free"). Usually with uplifting lyrics.

I agree. BTW, talking about Anna Lee, don't you guys think it would be better if the first appearance of Petrucci in this song didn't exist? I find it strange. I don't think it contributes to the song. I actually think it detracts from it...

Well, I actually solved and didn't find anything funny, like those "Love Me" equations (which were what I was trying to find), but I'm passing thru a weird moment in life, with all kinds of warped thoughts. :-) So, it wouldn't be surprising if I made a mistake here:

    DT(t-10) > FW(t-8) => DTt - 10DT > FWt - 8FW => DTt - FWt > 10DT - 8FW => t > (2DT + 8DT - 8FW)/(DT-FW) = 2DT/(DT-FW) + 8

    if (of course :-) ) DT-FW != 0

I'm surely missing something here and making myself and idiot in front of 1,000 people, but that's life. :-) I'm getting used to it.

    []s going to bed (it's 3:57am), Roger...
