Okay, I've been meaning to post this for some time, but never did get
around to it. Anyway, I've been wanting to know if anyone could give
me any info on any bands (prog or not, even though most would fall
into the prog genre)/songs/etc. that have references to works by
    J.R.R. Tolkien or C.S. Lewis (i.e. King's X's Out of the Silent
Planet). I don't care how cliche, cheesy, or cool it may be. It's
more for research purposes than entertainment. Please e-mail me
    privately. Thanks.

Let's see there are so many.......

    6. Songs telling us to look deep inside ourselves to solve all the worlds and our
    own problems.
    7. Songs with multi-part titles (either with several titles within a single song or
a song in several parts or acts).
    8. The term "virtuosity" applied to every prog review.
    9. Concept albums (even if I do love them)!
    10. Lyrics containing as many 4 and 5-syllable words as possible.
    11. This sentence at the beginning of a prog album review or advertisement, "This
band has a devoted, almost cult-like, fan base............"

I just found a CD by Iced Earth and I Almost bought it. The reason I
didn't is because they looked (and I seem to remember them being death
metally. I like prog metal but I just can't get into the death style
vocals. Somebody recommended a Death (Human, I think) album and I couldn't
stand it. gave it to some dude in australia for free. Can anybosy help me
with describing these guys? The CD is supposedly inspired by a comic book.

    To Mike,
Have you got the money I sent you for the Echolyn tapes yet?

    Megadeth,
I'm glad to see the discussion of DT/Megadeth connections. I think
Megadeth walks a line between experimentalthrash/quality metal/and prog.
Cryptic Writings is brilliant as well as Marty's new solo album (it's his
best one yet, absolutely amazing). I like the keyboards on Cryptic
Writings and I'd like to see Megadeth bring a full time boardist on board.
An interesting Megadeth story. I used to take guitar lessons (I play bass
but I thought that guitar might help with my songwriting) fro a guy in
Joplin, Missouri named Johny Rose. The dude has got to be around fifty and
is an sbsolute smoking guitar player. When Megadeth came into town for the
Reckoning Day tour Marty did a clinic and challanged the best guitar player
in Joplin (Johny Rose) to a duel. Johny kicked his ass (though he was
sweating and was working his ass off) Marty just shook his head and after
the duel he was wandering around the store looking for Rose to ask how he
    got so good. Pretty cool.

PS-the remix of Almost Honest on the Mortal Combat soundtrack SUCKS. I
can't believe Megadeth let that jerk turn a great song into second rate
techno bullshit. And that song is the first single from the soundtrack! Oh
well, at least it's good publicity for Mustaine and crew.

As to whoever said that they learned guitar parts to other people songs and
felt that they could then write similar stuff I'd have to give a big maybe.
I play a lot of piano parts by Bach on my bass (6 string) but I'm not shure
that I could write something that would stick around for hundreds of years.

    Thanx,
    Seth

No scientific evidence. The MOL theory is based on empirical observation.
I would need to submit a thesis and design a statistical study to confirm
it. Maybe get a government grant for the study. Actually, I might be able
to design a scientific study using human guinea pigs. Would need to
control their exposure to light, and objectively measure their "horniness"

Actually this may help the theory! A relationship started when hormones
are at a low point may be more stable. The relationship would have to be
based more on real compatibility and affection. Not just hormone crazed
    humans bumping into each other.

I forgot to mention the that relationships started in the MOL hormone phase
tend to be of the 9 1/2 week variety. Very passionate at the start, but
they fizzle quickly. Would make sense if the people are acting out of a
primal, hormonal urge. Most animals that only mate during these MOL-type
periods tend to avoid the opposite sex for the rest of the year.

You should REALLY check out the video version of TLF. If you play guitar or

I have been into FNM since the "Epic" era and I must say you should check
them out. AotY is REALLY "different". What I mean is that they go through
a variety of styles. Some songs almost sound punkish, while some have
proggish tendancies. I think on the whole, you'll like the album a lot.
Also check out their "big" album "The Real Thing". That's probably they're
    best shit.

Well, I sorta agree here, to an extent... I got DWD first, which was what saved them, but then I got HoR, I got to Taunting Cobras, and was sorta scared to listen to the rest of the CD, this song seemed soooo bad, but the rest of hte CD is good... I still skip TC every time I listen to the CD, though...

Well, I never really noticed it at first either, but the opening does sound alot like it, especially the keyboard... but I don't know that its quite as much as what whoever (again, I think Merlo) said...

Guys, I'm not sure how on topic this is in relation to DT but it definitely is on topic in relation to music. I've been thinking about buying a guitar and learning how to play. I've never played guitar at all (other than the one or 2 chords a friend of mine taught me a week ago). I've played some other insturments like piano and sax. Anyway, my friend insists that to really learn to play well I should first learn on an acoustic. However, he says that it's easier to learn on an electric and that while that option is tempting it's better to start with the acoustic. Another friend of mine just bought an electric and is learning and says that you're much better off with the electric since you can always make the electric have and acoustic sound so the electric is more versatile. So lemme ask you guys, which is better to first learn on, electric or acoustic? Also, what is a good price to play for a new guitar (either electric or acoustic) for a beginner. Also, what's a good brand of guitar (either electric or acoustic) to learn on?

That would be The Dark Saga--based on the Spawn comics. I've got it, as well as Burnt Offerings from a year earlier.

No, there's no real death vocals on it. The low stuff is whispery, not growling. There's not much vocal talent to be heard, though. And Burnt Offerings is a little more death-vocal-ish, but still isn't as "Cookie Monster" as Death is.

My brother thinks they sound like Gwar, if that helps. Kinda pseudo- progressive thrash metal. I came to metal music from DT, rather than vice-versa (as most people here did) so I can't come up with a comparison of my own. :-(

If it helps, I also bought 'Symbolic' by Death and sold it back to the used-cd-shop I bought it from because I couldn't hack the vocals. Same for a Cathedral disc, but I kept the one 'My Dying Bride' disc I bought.

I'd say go back and get it if you can.

Would that be like the Packers, or like the Colts? ;-)
