I don't know if this is related or not, but it's pretty cool: If you play a
note and at the same time hum the 10th through the instrument (the 3rd up an
octave), the combination will produce the 5th in addition. One wind
instrument player playing a major chord. Fun to do. It's worked for me on
    trombone and flute.

Hey folks. Hope everyone had a happy and safe turkey day. (I know I did. :)
Just thought you'd all like to know that Big Wreck is going to be on Rockline
next Monday night, December 8th. (As the cliche goes, check your local
listings.) Hopefully every question that they field will be asked by Jammers
(if anyone could do that, we could :). You know, stuff like "So, what do you
think of John Petrucci's playing?" and "Are you grateful for being given the
chance to tour with a band like DT who has such a rabid following?" Stuff
like that. I'd kill to hear that. Mark your calendars. :)

    > people in the US?

Well, just like any holiday, there is the traditional meaning, and the actual
    meaning.

The tradition started way the fuck back when, when the pilgrims from England
were spending their first winter stateside. They hosted a dinner for
themselves and the Native Americans, and everyone gave thanks for basically
surviving the winter with food and tobacco to spare. So, traditionally, we
Americans are supposed to gather on the fourth Thursday of November to
commemorate the spirit of those pilgrims in that first winter, and give thanks
    for everything that we have.

Naturally, the holiday (like most, for most people) has lost its meaning.
Nowadays it's about traveling great distances to see relatives we're going to
see at Christmas anyway, gorging ourselves on turkey, stuffing, and cranberry
sauce, getting loaded on wine, and watching football on TV.

    Cynically,
    -d

    Hello Superheroes of the World,

a big thanks goes out to THE MAN, to shares his powerful life
with us. He is in a class of its own.
Now we know, where's the home of a __real__ HERO: Right Here!

While I was reading the message of a man who got lessons in
High School Wrestling, I had a vision and I'd like to share it
with you all: Isn't there a guy out in America who did four
Touchdowns and is married with a girl from Wanker County?

And I asked myself.: Is it a bird, is it a plane or is it Al?

    No, it is BAHRMAN!

If he is real, why is he living in the US wouldn't it better he
would stay in the Iraq for a while ?
Ooops, No, let him stay in the US otherwise he will arrive in China.

Is he the man who makes CDR´s with his Laserbeam-Eyes, only
    reinforced by a prism ?

Is he the man who can make the world a better place, only
with his sword of justice ?

Is he the man who turns water into beer, only with
    his words of wisdom ?

Is he the man who brings peace to anyone, only with
    the power of his mind?

If you see him, don't stand too close to him. He can take you out
with only one punch from his merciful hands. Hands that could heal
wounds in seconds. If he beats you he can heal you too.
    Isn't it a wonder???

If it happened once, it could be happen again, couldn't it ?
    Somewhere, sometimes we will know.

I would like to support my favorite hero, who's always on a (impossible)
mission if he is driving around in his very expensive Bahrmobile, so
please tell me where's the place where I can order BAHRMAN (TM) Merchandise
Products. My kids felt in love with the Skydiving-Bahrman and the
Mr. Cheese-Bahrman dolls after the commercial appears on TV.
    Any help is appreciated.

Last but not least I would love to know whether he is living in his
Bahrcave(TM) or will it be necessary that we must build him HIS

    Hey guys,

Just thought I'd post a quick review of Merry Axemas, considering there's so much talk about TSO these days. To put it simply, this album rocks. It's very diverse, but the standout performances are by Kenny Wayne Shepard (funk version of Rudolph...complete with Hammond B-3 solo), Eric Johnson, Steve Vai, Brian Setzer and Joe Satriani. It's cool because every song really bears each player's signature stamp. Eric Johnson contributes one of the most amazing recorded performances of his career with "The First Nowell." Worth the price of the CD alone. In general, this album is really strong. All the tunes are very tastefully done. This is a good disc to put in the changer with TSO and Take 6 (if any of you are into a cappella vocal music, the harmonies on this album make Galactic Cowboys look like kindergarten:) BTW, to the guy who was asking about Hotei, he is a Japanese pop star that was supposed to be on the Japanese release of Merry Axemas as a bonus track to sell records. Since he gets a lot of offers to do the Japanese bonus track gig, he sort of played hard-ball with Steve Vai and requested he be on the international release. That's why he's on Merry Axemas in the states. His playing is a bit lackluster IMHO.

    Later all!

    Hello All-

As many of you know liveconcerts.com recently broadcast a live DT concert. The broadcast was on sunday at 6:30 ET. I also had to drive 10 hours to school that same day. Because I did not want to misss the concert I came up relly early, but just in case I did I emailed liveconcerts.com and asked the manager if and when the DT concert was going to be archived. He said that as of then (about a week before the cybercast) the show was not going to be archived. He said that in order for a show to be placed in the archives, liveconcerts.com must get the permission of the band, which at that point they had not done. Dont know if they are planning to or not, but just wanted everyone to know that not every show gets archived.

As an oboe player, I can tell you I've never heard of a PROFESSIONAL oboe player using this technique. Most professional wind players of any sort do NOT use the technique. Breathing is a normal function, and as long as you don't breathe like a horse or something, no one in the audience seems to mind. My teachers have never mentioned circular breathing to me ONCE in all my time playing. PLus, air support is a big deal in winds, so circular breathing isn't great for this; if you want a solid wall of air support, this sneaking air in and out is a no-no. And embouchure integrity at least on the OBOE would be screwed to hell by something like CB, very true.

Aside from breathing, there is the whole muscle tension thing...did Watrous ever talk about that?

Ooo, speaking of all of this, I have a concert this Saturday....

Should've made meself clearer. I wanted to know if anyone knows for sure when Fates will be playing the Outer Edge (which is located in Marietta, about an hour from where I live; I'd guess about twenty, thirty minutes from Atlanta).

I just found it interesting that 99X, a local radio station, the Outer Edge itself, and Creative Loafing all seem to think that the FW show is on Dec. 3rd when they won't actually be here till the 14th (that is confirmed, by the way; Ticketbastard has finally put tix on sale for that date, though I can't get any more info because their website seems to be fucked all the way to the ionosphere).

And people wonder why I get so fraggin' uptight about prog bands not getting the respect they deserve. Sheesh...

    Cheers, Phil

Well technically, Marietta IS the Atlanta FW show. Marietta is in Cobb County and is about 10 miles outside Atlanta city limits but is still considered "Metropolis" Atlanta :)

Btw, if anybody could give me some info on FW I'd be appreciative. I have NEVER heard their music and how closely related to DT are they? As long as they're not death metal (a la King Diamond), I'll be fine! Not a real fan of that genre.

The only band I've ever seen at The Outer Edge fairly recently was... (y'all are gonna laugh...) ...RATT!!! Don't blame me, Vaiman talked me into going ;) Actually it wasn't all that bad, except Robin Crosby wasn't with them. Pearcy still looked the same but [drummer] Blotzer's trimmed hair gave him the impression of an overaged surfer. Felt like we were in 1985 all over again!!! (Memories...) I think Ratt is STILL stuck somewhere in that "era of hair".

I'll stop this thread from spinning any further... but I just can't wait for the Twisted Sister reunion (yeah, they rule, huh huh!! :)

YES YES YES!!!!!! Yeah, that's actually not a terribly complex technique, but it is difficult to pull off correctly. I've come close, but never have been able to get it right. For anyone who digs some great jazz brass playing, check out Bone-ified, by Watrous. I caught him do a show with the SIUE Jazz band and some concert band back when I was in high school and have been blown away by him since. Also, another great musician that has a really cool, casual personality. Probably the smoothest tone on a brass instrument I've ever heard.

Marietta (or "May--retta" as it's pronounced by the local hicks) is really part of Atlanta. It's a suburb like, 10-15 minutes north of Atlanta proper on I-75. When I first heard the album (cryptic), I thought I heard some Rush or Queensryche in it. Weird I know, but that's what I thought of. I was like, "hey, Megadeth is dipping their toes in the progressive waters! cool!" I personally think that Megadeth and DT should go on a tour together...I think they would perfectly complement each other. I'd like to hear Dream Theater do a version of Anarchy In the UK with Megadeth as an encore song and then they could both do Pull Me Under (with Dave M. singing the "PULL ME UNDER I'm NOT AFRAID" part)

Yep, same here. I've yet to hear a bad Megadeth album. Well, okay, Killing is My business wasn't so hot, but hey, I have the version with the Nancy Sinatra song, "These Boots" which kicks so much ass that it made the whole album worth listening to! hahah HELL, Just hearing Dave Mustaine yell "are ya ready BOOOOOOTS!" through his teeth is enough to make me love the album! Beavis (Wes Foll) http://www.america.net/~wfoll/beavis.htm ++The optimist thinks this is the best of all possible worlds.

    ++The pessimist fears it is true. /| / ||\ / || \ ______________ _ ______ _ __ __ //| || \\_____ _____| ||___ // |\ \/ / //_| || \ | || || | | || |/ ///|| \ / / __ || |\ \ | || || |__| || <//_|| / \ / / | || | \ \| || || __ || |\ \__ |/ /\ \ /_/ |_||_| \ || || | |_||_|/\ \ || / \_\ \ || ||/ \_\||/ \ ||/ \|
