I've notice several people asking how they could record streaming RealAudio.
Now, I'm not advocating piracy here, but if you'll check the newsgroup
alt.binaries.cracks on any given day, you'll find a RealPlayer crack that
allows you to record any audio/video that's streaming to it using the
player's Record button. It will save in .ra format, which is far less space
consuming than .WAV files (albeit, lower quality due to compression).
BTW...this will work regardless of whether the broadcast is "downloadable"
    or not.

I had company visiting for Thanksgiving when liveconcerts.com broadcast the
DT concert on Sunday, so I missed it. It looks like liveconcerts is about a
month behind on their archives, so I guess I'll have to wait a little longer
until I can record it. I'm sure they'll get it online soon. They have a
pretty nice selection of concerts in their archive. I listened to about 45
minutes of The Fixx show at HOB in Chicago. I had forgotten how much I
loved their guitarist's rhythm stuff. Is there anyone else out there who
got into _Shuttered Room_ during the early 80's? Good album for a "New
Wave" group...._Reach the Beach_ wasn't bad either. After RtB, though, they
wen't downhill really quick. Cy Curnin had been designing mens hats for the
past few years, but his voice still sounds pretty good on this reunion
    concert.

Enough NDTC...sorry for the Fixx tangent.

    Keep 'jammin'

    Hello fellow ytsejammers!

Just got back online. My net had been broken for 3 months.Found only
about 400 jams awaiting in my mailbox...Anyway,I think that the new
album is great. Not as good as Awake or I&W but great, nevertheless.I was
wondering are any of the finnish jammers thinking about attending DT´s
gig at Helsinki next year?I´ll definetely be there in the front
row.Bought my ticket today.Oh,Mike Portnoy is on the cover story of
Modern Drummer.I found that article to be very informative.

Sounds like a great double-bill! Best one since Enchant opened for Fates
here in the SF Bay area.

I just got the latest from Divine Regale, "Ocean Mind". I had never heard
them before, except references on the web. So this is my first, quick
    impression.

They will definitely fit in with Fates. Musically, they are similar to
Fates, Queensryche, and Crimson Glory. Vocals are interesting. They have 2
singers, the lead singer is very similar to Midnight from Crimson Glory,
and the second singer (the drummer) does a very good Geoff Tate imitation.
Like I said, I have barely had a chance to listen to them yet, but I'd give
them a thumbs up at this point.

I must agree here. this CD is a must have. The last track on the CD has
special meaning to me. I had a certain theory of what the song means a

I was listening to Trust (Megadeth off of Cryptic Writings)
on the radio a few days ago and it startled me how the
guitar solo sounded so much like Dream Theater to me!

The part of the song is at 2:57. It starts off with some
samples (very DT - turn up the volume and listen to the
samples - very cool!) and then goes into a cool little
(yea little, right...sounds like it would be a pain in
the ass to play!) acoustic solo.

Am I the only one that hears DT in that? Or maybe
I am hearing Megadeth in DT? Either way, Cryptic Writings
is an awesome album...as is just about every other Megadeth
    album I have ever bought.

    Later,
    Josh

Circular breathingis nothing more than a novelty. Unless Im playing piece that wasnt designed for the trumpet (a drawn out violin solo or something), its pretty useless for anything except impressing your friends or sneaking some air when the music says you arent supposed to.

My question is, why would someone WANT to hold a note 47 mins?? I get up to 5-7 minutes on a trumpet or digeridoo and just get bored...I could have been listening to DT in that amount of time!

And CB is much moredifficult on woodwinds, as it is tougher to maintain embochure integrity while compressing metered amounts of air.

Whatever...Watrous rocks though. Saw him do this concerto for two trombones by himself using a crazy humming technique exclusive to brass that i know is REALLY hard. Amazing player.

There are a few exceptions, though. > I actually gained an increased appreciation for Ytsejam and Metropolis > when I started to learn those, because I paid even more attention than > usual to all the individual parts. Has anyone else experienced this > phenomenon?

Definitely. W/ me it seems to depend on the individual song, too, though I can't fathom the relevant factors to it. It also at times occured w/ original songs of the respective band I played with (though only if written and arranged by others, not by myself). I guess it might have something to do w/ too much messing around w/ stuff, so that whole structures somehow *felt* arbitrary. I somehow have to keep an appreciation for a *song* as an organic whole, not just almost freely exchangeable parts. To me personally it is also important to make a song somehow mine, if I didn't do the writing then still it's my very own interpretation of it. 'acourse this is something that won't work in the context of a band lead by someone who wants to have authority while not being an authority (so much on the etiology of my saxophobia :-)). One of the bands I enjoyed being in most actually only did covers of *very* inhomogenic material ranging from chansons to punk, though somehow the actual interpretations sounded very homogenously and unique (maybe like "speed folk" :-)), just as if we had written all that stuff ourselves. Also I hardly ever copy stuff note for note, maybe for learning purposes, but then I try to take it apart, fool around w/ it, and put it back together again, just the playful approach :-) (maybe I should add I'm kinda socialized as a jazz and fusion player, and I firmly believe in impro, jamming and all this nice stuff :-))

Also it had been kinda my obsession trying to fathom what actually is going on the minds of different players while performing. Also w/ respect to teaching... I mean we all know this "which notes can I play over which chords" approach, but is this what's going on in our brains as we are soloing (or "only" improvising a bassline)? Have students to content themselves w/ statements like by gaining experience it *somehow* gets more automatized? Questions... <sigh>

    Cheers,

    Heike the Terrible
