This sums up my thoughts pretty well, so I'll take the point further. I
think playing what you listen to makes a big difference in whether you
stick with the instrument. From personal experience, I would recommend
starting with an electric, if you listen to stuff played on electric
guitars. If you try to start on an acoustic, you have to learn the basic
chords to produce anything pleasant sounding. These chords involve some
pretty rough finger positions for a beginner, although you definitely
should work on them. Often times, this short term inability will lead to
lack of interest (i.e. since I suck on this thing, I don't really want to
pick it up and play it). With an electric, I think it is simpler to make
fairly recognizable music very quickly, by playing bar and 'power' chords.
Power chords are played by only using two fingers, and are relatively easy
to pick up, therefore sounding pleasant and perhaps generating the
necessary interest to keep practicing. That's how it happened for me.

Now, most people probably have more self discipline for practicing than I
do, but I almost quit playing the guitar because it sounded so shitty.
Then I discovered that by playing along to Metallica and Dokken riffs, I
was actually making cool sounds with it, so I stuck with it. My buddy
started out taking lessons on an acoustic, and quit after he realized that
there was no enjoyment in playing happy birthday on an acoustic. Well
after I started playing electric, he bought an electric and learned how to
play, using the same 'play what I know' method.

There is one drawback to learning how to play like this. If you don't
progress, you'll always think Mick Mars is a guitar god.

Every other Led Zep song seems to be about tolkein. I can't name any
titiles because I really don't like them. I do know that there is one song
where they talk about Gollum and "the darkest lands of Mordor". Pretty
    blatant rip off.

Has anyone heard the soundtrack to the Fifth Element? I just saw the movie
last night (great fucking movie) and I had to whatch it twice. Once for
the action, once for the soundtrack. It's Arabesque in parts, classical in
others, and there is the coolest song that I havee ever heard, fusing opera
with techno. They samppled this women's voice and used it on a keyboard.
It freakin rocks. I'm defiantely going to pick up this soundtrack.

If you havn't seen this movie, DO IT! It's a liitle tounge in cheek in
parts, almost to the point of spoofdom, but it's still great. And I've
never heard music used better in a movie. Its' great, better the second
time you seee it. I do have a question though. Was this movie somehow
connected with the movie Friday (fucking horrible movie)? The two black
guys in the Fifth Element were also in Friday. One is great, the other
    (the president/Zues) is terrible.

    Thanx,

Just something very quick. Due to a financial hardship, i'm going to
sell my copy of Mike Bahr's ORIGINAL Cygnus CD's. As we know, only 1000
were ever made, and it's in PERFECT condition.

If you want it, and are willing to pay for it (look at Mike Bahr's
website for an accurate accuont on how much it's worth), please let me know.

First off, wearing all black is hardly a prog cliche or even a metal
cliche. It's a general artist cliche. SPeaking as someone who does wear
all black 90% of the time, I should know. ;) In fact, I was wearing my
signed white Touring Into Infinity shirt, and someone I knew came up to me
and said, "Chris, you're wearing a _WHITE_ shirt!" After exlpaining the
reasons, she accepted that it was okay. ;)

Secondly, the Mechanig WDADU version of "The Ytse Jam" indeed does not have
the drums begore the music starts. It begins with the first big chord that
everyone plays. There shouldn't be a name for the missing "intro" cause
it's just a few drum hits and lasts all of 2 seconds. Personally, I've
always thought of it as the end of Status Seeker, which just happened to
sound nifty as an opener for Ytsejam.

It's not a rip-off, it's just paying tribute to a great writer. There's that one
line you mention from "Ramble On" (the rest of the song really has nothing to do
with Tolkein, btw), and there's a couple similar lines here and there, but not
many. Far from "every other song."

The discussion of similarities between Enchant's Missing and DT's 6:00
brings to mind that some DT riffs remind me of other artists. We know that
DT liberally reuses their own riffs, but there's many instances where they
have reminded me of other bands (Like Rush, of course).

For me, Lines in the Sand had a couple of things:

    1. When I first heard the main guitar riff that starts at 2:05, it reminded
me of something. I finally figured it out. "Girl Goodbye", from Toto's
    first album. Very similar riff.

    2. This one's obvious, and I really liked the way they worked it in. At
5:58 in LitS, the keys start to sound like a Frampton song from FCA. And
then from 6:09 - 6:17, Petrucci slips in a totally Frampton-style lead. Cool.

Any one else notice these similarities? Any other examples?

Funny, the only track i never got into off of that cd is the title

Mind...its cool, bit its kinda cheesy too. However the last 2 songs are my

The bass was used on recent tours and albums, and it is in excell- ent condition. He is auctioning it off because he now has some new basses from Zon.

Monty Colvin (established bassist and painter for Galactic Cowboys material) has now released some of his original paintings (not prints) to the public. He currently has 5 different paintings up for sale. Costs represent time and detail involved.

Check out the Paintings portion on my GC page (URL in sig, and follow the links from there). All 5 are shown with scans, size, and price. As of now, these are single paintings (only one made of each), but more may be made if the demand is high enough.

    Thanks, Dan

All I can say about this cd: WOW. I really like it!! I have no idea when it's going to be released in the States, but get it when it comes out. I think it *resembles* Handful of Rain, but it's also better written songs I think. On the last song it's also got some more of those vocals like Chance has where Zak's voice is recorded a bunch of times singing different parts. Anyways, I just felt the need to blab about that real quick before I go to bed.

Also, GET Sevendust's album. It's badass. (I was listening to it earlier today and it jams.) Beavis (Wes Foll) http://www.america.net/~wfoll/beavis.htm ++The optimist thinks this is the best of all possible worlds.

    ++The pessimist fears it is true. /| / ||\ / || \ ______________ _ ______ _ __ __ //| || \\_____ _____| ||___ // |\ \/ / //_| || \ | || || | | || |/ ///|| \ / / __ || |\ \ | || || |__| || <//_|| / \ / / | || | \ \| || || __ || |\ \__ |/ /\ \ /_/ |_||_| \ || || | |_||_|/\ \ || / \_\ \ || ||/ \_\||/ \ ||/ \|
