Hey, all...I'm treading water here...I'm trying to catch up to the Jam
and I'm almost getting there =)
Re prog cliches: the 20-minute phenomenon. Ever notice there a LOT of
songs right at about 20 minutes or so? Yes is really bad about this.
Close to the Edge: 18:50. THe whole Tales From Topographic Oceans album
is four songs, each roughly 20 minutes. Gates is 22:55. That That Is is
19:19. OFB has Seasons....23:06. Genesis has Supper's Ready (22:58), and
probably some others (never been a Genesis nut)....Rush has Hemispheres
(18:something) 2112 (22:something)_and some others I'm probably
forgetting...ELP has Tarkus (20:35)...etc etc etc. The weird thing is
that songs in the 14-17 minute range are rare...Tull has Baker St. Muse
(16:40), Yes has Awaken (15:38), the Wait For Sleep/Learning To Live
suite is 14:01 (that's one composition...two tracks, but one piece, in
my mind). (How do I know all these times off the top ofmy head? Being a
DJ does that to you.) I don't get it....maybe it's because 20 minutes is
roughly one side of an LP. (Songs in the 9-10:30 range are very common
in prog too.)
Somebody mentioned Megadeth's Cryptic Writings....I haven't heard beans
about it...is it like Countdown and Youthanasia? Or isit like R.I.P. and
Peace Sells? Or is it totally something else?
Re getting started on instruments....as a drummer lemme chime in with
the observation that nobody should try to learn an instrument who isn't
serious about practicing maniacally for the first few years. Once you
develop chops you can slack off some (but not much!). I found it was
easier for me to practice my ass off if I was playing on a decent kit. I
dunno if this true for guitars, but for drums it's very true: on a
high-quality set, you just don't need to play with a lot of force to get
a lot of volume. On a shitty set, it's just quieter. Also, take snare
drums. A professional caliber snare (say a Pearl 14 x 8) will run you
about 120-170 bucks (good drum sets are expensive, ladeez and
gents...mine's snare/double bass/three
toms/hihats/crash/ride/china/splash and it's probably worth 2,800-3,000)
whereas a comparable shitty no-name one will run anywhere from $20 to
$80. The cheap one won't feel the same way. You'll play differently. In
my lessons recently I've been working on double strokes (specifically,
roll breakdowns...I hate these things...good chop-builders but boring as
shit) and on the shitty public set, I can't get them with my left hand.
On the sweet expensive set my teacher has, I can get them no problem.
The point is: if you're serious about being good, don't get something
shitty because you won't be able to play right on it. Don't get anything
expensive just yet; get something in an intermediate price range. I
don't know for sure, but I assume this applies to guitars and other
instruments as well as drums.
Okay. All for now. I'll be back. ;)

Anyone else know which particular song he's talking about? I dig
Zep, but I'm not terribly familair with their entire catalogue (i.e.
I don't own anything by them). Like I said, too, no matter how great

A review of the recent Fates Warning show in SLC:
First of all, if it wasn't for my brother, woot, I never would have heard
about the show. I couldn't believe the lack of publicity. Even the City
Weekly, which covers every club and bar in the city, didn't have the show
listed.
Anyway, they played a little dive called Ichabob's on 666 S. State. I
had heard some bad rumors about this place, but the sound turned out to
be great, and it wasn't too crowded. The tickets were only $10, which
makes me wonder how FW is planning to make any money on this thing at
all. I would be surprised if they broke even. I called the place and
they said there would be two opening bands and FW should start about 10.
I planned to arrive at 10, since most local opening bands suck. As I was
looking for a parking spot, I saw Mark Zonder walking down the street, so
I found a parking spot as fast as I could and sprinted over to where I
saw him in hopes of getting an autograph before the show, but he must
have gone back in the tour bus.
I went inside and the second opening band was just starting, and I was
pleasantly surprised by them. They weren't a regular band, just four
guys who got together to open up for FW. They were all very good, and
the bassist was playing a 6-string. He must be a Myung disciple.
Ichabob's is not a very big place, and there were only about 100 people
who showed up for the show. I think that it is criminal that a band with
talent like FW is playing a joint like this, but I didn't complain
because I was about 10 feet from the "stage" so I could see everything
very well.
FW started just after 11. The concert consisted of APSoG in its
entirety. The band put on an absolutely breathtaking, astounding,
indescribable show. Jim is a very laid back guitarist, with no jumping,
dancing, foot-tapping, or even facial expressions evident. Joey was
similar, but he moved around a lot more, stepping up for background
vocals and such. Ray was spot on all night, and Zonder was going nuts on
the kit. I guess that the whole event has to be experienced, it can't be
described.
Overall, I was very impressed with the absence of artifice or pretense in
the performance. There was no light show, no cheesy theatrics, just five
guys trying to keep the focus on the music that they are making. APSoG
is a very sincere, heartfelt, emotive piece of music and the band did a
great job of transmitting that in their performance. I wish that DT
would play a small intimate venue like this when (not if) they come to
Salt Lake.
After the concert I waited around for about an hour trying to get
autographs on my liner notes, but I only managed to get Ray's. The rest
of the guys stayed in the bus. I really wish that they would have come
out for autographs, and I am not really sure why they didn't. There were
some concert shirts for sale, but they were only accepting cash, and I
only had about 10 bucks.
If you have a chance to see these guys in concert, DON'T MISS IT!! If
you do you will regret it. The guy who I was going to go with decided to
stay at home with his ball and chain instead of going to the concert, and
he will regret it for life.
DT skipped Salt Lake on the first leg of the tour, but FW's great
performance will tide me over until DT comes here next year.

this is primarily intended for German or European jammers.
I am giving away a pair of backstage passes from the Dream Theater
concert in Offenbach on the 2nd of December. The passes are unused
(i.e. they still have the peel-off strips on) and in perfect condition. =
They
are printed on black cloth, and have the majesty symbol, the infinity
symbol and the pairs of binoculars on them. The words 'back stage' have =
been blacked out to prevent abuse next year (the text on the pass says
'touring into infinity 97/98'). As I said, I am giving these away. First =

Message-ID: <25c226b7.3487d7d3@aol.com>
..especially when you're waiting for a DT show to begin. Here are some things
that I remember about last night in Bonn (includes spoilers, I guess):
Vanden Plas: The music was really good, but, boy, do I hate the singer... I
mean, I don't know the guy personally, but I really couldn't stand his stage
acting. Urgh. Sorry...
DT's set: Of course they opened with LITS, and I'm *still* not convinced that
this is a good idea. My fears about the crowd were fortunately unfounded.
There was no shoving and the whole venue didn't seem to be as packed as it was
at the show in April. Still, I think most people need a little time to really
get into the music, so they should save such a long, intense epic for a little
later in the set. IMO. This was my last complaint about that topic, I promise.
:-)
They also played (though not necessarily in this order): BMS, Voices (with the
intro of ToT, I think), TSM (electric version), UAGM, HY, that Puppies on
Crack thing, Lie, PS, JLMB, PMU, Ytsejam and NM. Metropolis was different
again. No 'Discotheque', no 'One', but they inserted a part of some other
song. I just know that I knew the melody from somewhere, but I couldn't
identify it. Maybe someone else can help out. The ending of the song was
played by Mike's drum roadie (at least I guess that it was him).
There were no parts of ACOS, and they did NOT play Scarred. Damn. :-(
The overall performance was just incredible. I think everybody in the band was
better than ever before (ok, Mike has always been an animal at the shows), but
the one who impressed me the most was John Petrucci. He was just everywhere,
running, singing, headbanging and, uh, playing guitar. :-) It was hard to take
one's eyes off him.
I think even those who don't like FII that much would have to admit that the
live shows just keep getting better and better. It was simply amazing!
I almost forgot that there were a few guys filming the show (or parts of it),
so maybe there's another live video in the making...
At least one date of the full European tour next year seems to be confirmed:
The band is going to play at the Philipshalle in Duesseldorf on the 13th of
March (that's what it said on the posters), so mark your calendars...
One final request: Could somebody in contact with the band please ask them to
make the lyrics of Speak to Me and The Way it Used to Be available in some
way? I seem to enjoy DT's music so much more when I know the words.
Take Care,
Andreas Berger

Hi everyone,
I've been to the DT concert in 'Den Bosch'. I have to say they played brilliant, the sound was excellent and again James' voice was very good. It seemed they were having great fun. At the end of the show they played a bit of 'One' from Metallica. They have done that before, I know, but this time it lasted a little longer, with Pornoy doing the vocals. He asked James to do it, but James didn't want to. He just nodded his had. John Petrucci was going crazy with his guitar. James walked upon J.P. and put his hands around J.P.'s neck. Only then Petrucci would stop. Somewhere in March they will return I believe, in the meantime we'll have to do it with the X-mass CD

I saw The Fifth Element when it came out in theaters and I too was very impressed with the movie and ESPECIALLY the soundtrack!
So I went out and bought it right away. Well, I think the music looses something when it is not connected to the images you are seeing. For instance, the music that is playing while "Leeloo" is beating the living hell out of those guys is haunting...but more because it wasn't the type of music you would expect for a battle scene than for pure musical enjoyment. Whoever did the music for the movie was absolutely brilliant, and he/she really knew the scenes they were composing for. Really incredible.
I guess in much the same way that a movie scene doesn't seem right or exciting without the right mood music, sometimes music doesn't seem right without the right scene :)
Buy the soundtrack and listen to it...let me know if you feel the same way I do about it. I haven't listened to it very much since then.

I agree. A guitar teacher once told me that one of the hardest things to break is a bad habit learned early on. Not that starting on the electric implies this. Just that what you say about the acoustic (especially a classical) is true. My fingers bled at first (no it wasn't the summer of '69 :), but after a while, picking up an electric was DA BALLZ :) Of course, I still suck, but it's a little easier :)

I'm sure that TDoE and Subcon are up there. No one seems to have them, and those that do rarely want to part with them. (They also seem to draw huge prices.)
Lie isn't exactly common, and I'm hearing that the Japanese FII is all but sold out. Of course, most of these items are probably superceded by anything you may have on vinyl.
Then again, TDoW is pretty rare, since no one seems to be receiving it. :-|
