I don't want to insult anyone, but I just had my first FW experience
with APSoG, and I must say that I wasn't impressed even in the least.
There was a total of about two minute's worth of real composition on
that album, and the rest was minimalist plunking! Anyone else agree
with me, or am I alone?

That f***** sucks. I don't feel good either. I remember when
I first saw Michael Hedges at the Luther Burbank Center in
Santa Rosa. It was an incredible performance. His 'Aerial Boundaries'

Well, I couldn't get into Fates right away either.
It definately grows on you though. I don't know
if you're a musician but there are alot of neat things to analyze too.
Give it time. I think it took me a year to get into them.

Well I have the Lie and Silent Man Cd singles, TDoE, LitS, Subcon, and
Acoustic Dreams. But the most rare is a drum head cover I got when I saw
them in Europe in '95. When I caught it I didn't know what it was, when I
finally looked at it I guarded it with my life. It already had Portnoy's
sig on it. Then after an hour or so of waiting I had it signed by all
    members.....

It's proudly hanging on my wall.

i'm losing respect for terrible ted as he keeps up his ultra-conservative
blather......then again, he did say the words "FATES" and "WARNING"
consecutively this morning on-air......he was mentioning the Tiles/Fates
show sunday night near Detroit......of course, he did say the show was on
Friday, so whatever glimmer of hope i had dissipated.....then again, he
did play TILES in the background as he was reading his news.....and he's
been playing stuff from Merry Axemas as background music......ahhh, i'm
    all mixed up.....

    Subject: Rare DT unofficial stuff
    Message-ID: <348908C0.2984@goodnet.com>

I won't count CDRs here because technically they could be forged,
though I would know the difference at a glance. :) And once I'm painting
the CDRs, they will be as secure as CDs. If we counted CDRs, then the
rarest would be Mosaic (well, duh), since I've only made and shipped
    like 100 of them.

The rarest official DT stuff includes the 3" Tears single (probably the
rarest thing right there), then the Status Seeker and Afterlife promos,
then after that probably the WDADU longbox.

The rarest unofficial CD silvers of DT are definitely as follows:

    1. A Fortune Pulled Under - never seen it, possibly vinyl, possibly
vaporware. Submitted to the original DT boot discog back in '93.

    2. Dimension Shift - I'd say possible vaporware except that they had
this one at Tracks In Wax in Phoenix... and I decided to buy Dance of
Eternity that day instead (low on cash). And I've been regretting that
decision quite a bit. It was an Images tour show, incomplete, and that's
all I remember about it, though someone submitted full info on it for
    the old DT boot discog.

    3. Subconscious, Acoustic Dreams, Antiquities, Scenes From a Memory -
these are the CD silvers I did. 500 of each. No deposit, no returns. And
they're all GONE. Not a single one of any of the bunch remains for sale.
A lesser rare CD, When Dream and Today Unite, exists to the tune of 1000
CDs. I am running low on these, like fumes in the gas tank. Another year
from now, all of the above will be identically impossible to find.

    4. Tap The Rockies. The original silver is silver, but is NOT barcoded.
My suspicions that this is a painted CDR will be confirmed when I get my
CD painter. The packaging is pro, but as I know all too well, all you
need is a good print shop to make that.

    5. (not CDs) Rock'n'roll bubble gum cards: John Petrucci, Mike Portnoy,
Charlie Dominici. Don't know if there were ones for Myung or Moore. Back
in 199? I bought a pack of cards and got such glam luminaries as CC
Deville, Sebastian Bach, Jake E. Lee, Steve Vai, and Klaus Meine. Those
three members of DT were on the "checklist" card. I remember searching
for days for these cards at collectibles shops a few years ago once I
had "discovered" DT, but no luck.

    6. (back to CDs) Images & Tour and Runes. A glance through the
microfiche of Goldmine at your local library should turn up plenty of
confirmations that these existed, but apparently they weren't very
popular, because you don't see much of them now. And yes, I&T was just
the sound from LATM and LIT, and didn't have all the songs.

    7. The Dance of Eternity, Consciously Unreal. Easily the toughest to
find among all the boots suspected to still be in circulation.

Speaking of rare stuff, I happened to come across the "You Not Me" promo single today (Ged, I love college radio! :) Two tracks: "Edit" (4:16) and "LP Version" (4:58). The edit does some *very* weird stuff in the chorus, and the end is slightly chopped (like 2x instead of 4x or something). I'd make a .wav of it if I had the time and system resources (I don't even have an MP3 player, let alone an encoder). I suppose I could be coerced into making tapes of it for people in trade or something. It's not like it's better or anything, but it is different, and a must have for the true collector. :) -d ------------------------------------------------------------------------ The Digital Man \|/ ____ \|/ "640 K ought to be enough cmerlo@cs.wm.edu "@'/ ,. \`@" memory for everyone." -Gates d-man@dreamt.org /_| \__/ |_\ "He won't need a bed http://www.cs.wm.edu/~cmerlo \__U_/ He's a digital man" -Peart ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Maintainer of the Official Dream Theater Frequently Asked Questions List http://www.cs.wm.edu/~cmerlo/dtfaq.html

First, a reminder that the Atlanta Ytse-gathering info page is at www.crl.com/~vanyel/ytses.html. As often as we've played the "Damage Inc." cover on WREK-FM here, they really ought to cover that here. :)

The Masquerade's ad for the show in the current issue of CREATIVE LOAFING includes the 96rock logo, but as far as I know they aren't playing ANY DT. What pisses me off is that the station will get passes to give away (or more likely, keep for their deejays), yet we got no passes for the show to give away on WREKage, where we've actually been playing DT and pushing the show (and Fates, too). Oh, the humanity! Oh, the inequity!

The ad also includes a rather nice blurb: "The long-awaited return of internationally revered musicians DREAM THEATER" (with the band name in a generic font, nothing from Awake or FII).

Here's the little post I made to the newsgroup atl.general about the show. I decided to have a little fun, since most people here wouldn't know the name Dream Theater if it bit them on the ass.

    +-----------------+

    Subject: TALENTED MUSICIANS INVADE ATLANTA!

...no film at 11, but you can see and hear the whole story on December 16th at the Masquerade.

Who would dare invade this city, this bastion of mallternative mediocrity? Who would DARE sully this benighted burg when they get not a stitch of radio airplay (well, excepting WREKage)?

--They're the band whose members consistently place highly in worldwide musicians' polls in magzines like GUITAR FOR THE PRACTICING MUSICIAN, BASS PLAYER and MODERN DRUMMER. --They're one of the very few bands that progressive rock and metal bands the world over compare themselves against. --They're the band whose members taken individually are masters of their crafts. --They're the band whose online fans petitioned their label so hard, they released an EP "just for us." --Yes, they're the band who turned hapless reviewer Mitchell Foy's mind into a pile of mush (it's the only way to explain his idiotic review in POETS, ARTISTS AND MADMEN :)).

They are Dream Theater. They are one of the world's finest progressive rock/metal bands. You won't hear them on 96rock because they're more than just a tad more intricate and thoughtful than Skynyrd. You won't hear them on 99-X because they're about nine times as talented as Blind Melon. You've probably never heard of them. Your friends up in Detroit or Chicago probably have (they have GOOD radio up there, kidz). Your friends who play in bands might have heard of 'em if they stay in touch with the cutting edge.

On Dec. 16th, if the sound system at the Masquerade cooperates :), you can see and hear these modern legends for yourselves. :)

Child of the television age, eh? Heh heh. Actually, it'd be my guess that most people on this list are pretty well-read, when compared to the rest of society at large.

    >This relates to prog in that, in many respects, progressive artists >took a genre (rock) and expanded the way it can be approached and >conceived. Whoa...deep shit, man. ;) Actually, that's an interesting point. Consider this: fantasy and sci-fi are looked down upon by most of the rest of the lit world as being kind of weird...prog gets looked down on by the music biz because it's...weird. Also, Tolkien is kind of the analogue of symphonic music in lit. When he was writing that crazy stuff, look what was happening in lit at the time. It was getting stripped down, very plain (not like pop music today, just different). He comes out and writes this funky epic about mythical creatures (and composed 11 WHOLE languages in the process!!) that was really long and used flowery language. Bands like Yes and King Crimson (the really early stuff anyway) resemble that closely...Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, and Aerosmith all put out their first album in 69, as did Crimson....the lyrics to In The Court are very flowery and poetic, and here's Plant yelling about being dazed and confused.

    >Adventures of Tom Bombadil" (or something like this). I've never read >anthing of this, but he seem to be very famous among RPG players, >since most of those people get information for their characters from >some of his books.

Lotsa RPGs are based on something similar to Tolkien...D&D....he wrote tons upon tons of stuff, and his son went back after his dad's death and sorted a lot of it out and published at least ten or fifteen thick-ass volumes of it.

(Something tells me this should all be in private e-mail, but such are the glories of an unmoderated list. =P )

Since everybody seems to be selling off CDs, guess I got a couple of duds I should try to get some cash back from. If anybody's interested in buying some, or trading something for em, email me. Echolyn--as the world Mastermind--Volume One and Volume Four: Until Eternity Voivod--Negatron (the only Voivod album I like is Outer Limits...did they do any others like that?) Savatage--Dead Winter Dead Genesis--Calling All Stations (warning: this recording contains toxic levels of saccharine) ELP--Live at the Royal Albert Hall (not bad stuff, I guess...pretty much the same as on the albums, just not as fast) Zappa--Strictly Commercial

I don't know how many of you like Dave Matthews, but the live album they just put out is a goddamned doozy. Wow. These guys can play circles around a lot of very good bands. Don't let the sales put you off, these guys play DAMN good music. Same with Phish, who also just put out a live album, which is almost as good as the DMB one.

By the way...what the hell does []'s mean?!? There's a couple of jammers who use that as a signoff...Rogerio? *lol* That's been bugging me for a while.

Belated congrats to Mike Bahr. D-Man, he's the new reigning Defender of Civilization. =P (P.S. No free shit? What's the world coming to?)

    >I dunno, I think I'd be too preoccupied trying "not to die" and I'd >forget all that stuff and just "run away really fast". :)

Heh heh. Me too. I'd at least grabbed a display or something and used that (from behind, of course...I grew up in the burbs man!)

    >I would like to support my favorite hero, who's always on a >(impossible) mission if he is driving around in his very expensive >Bahrmobile, so please tell me where's the place where I can order >BAHRMAN (TM) Merchandise Products. My kids felt in love with the >Skydiving-Bahrman and the Mr. Cheese-Bahrman dolls after the >commercial appears on TV. Any help is appreciated.

Heh heh. Mike, just hang out in record stores from now on. Not only will you not hafta bust your ass making boots, you get a lot more glory too.

Somebody try holding a goddamned drum roll up for 47 minutes. You'd die.

For me, when I leanr how to play a song (Metropolis comes readily to mind) it makes that much more amazing...I sit there and go "what the hell?!?" when I first hear it, and when I figure it out, I'm just as amazed, but in a different way.

    Whatever. Enough for now.

Quite a few songs by Zeppelin have subtle or obvious Tolkien references. "Stairway to Heaven" itself is an allusion to the Straight Path to the peace of Valinor (at the end of the Lord of the Rings, this is where "good hobbits" get to retire to :)). The lady of the song is, of course, the Lady Galadriel.

There's the obvious "Battle for Evermore" with its reference to (among other things) "the RingWraiths are out in black."

"Going to California" has a well-hidden reference: "Mountains and the canyons start to tremble and shake / The Children of the Sun begin to awake" --is a reference to the awakening of mankind/humanity in the Silmarillion (the "Children of the Sun"), as opposed to the elves and dwarves, who were there already. Tolkien likens us to the passing and waning of the day, since we are mortal, unlike the Fair Folk. There's also a line in the song about the gods and a "punch in the nose / I think I might be sinking" --which is a reference to the fall of the island of Numenor, also from the Silmarillion. (It gets whomped and then sinks.)

"Misty Mountain Hop"....well, gee, that's a toughie. Get out your maps of Middle-Earth, kids. :)

The song "Ramble On" is the one someone asked about. "In the darkest depths of Mordor I met a girl so fair But Gollum And the Evil One Crept up and slipped away with her...."

    There's more, but it's late. :)

    Hello all,

Here's a recap of one of the greatest shows I've ever seen... SPOILER MATERIAL TO FOLLOW

I knew the night was gonna go great based on the traffic on the way down to Schaumberg from Janesville... So we (me and two friends from Madison) end up getting to Jackhammers at about 6:30, and surveying the situation reveals that stuff is still getting set up inside. We decide to hit the Wendy's for nourishment, and while there I run into fellow paralleler Deebie Seeger and say hi. Nice meeting ya! We head back to Jackhammers and wait about an hour before they let us in. (and rather slow I might add!) While, waiting, I met up with ytsejammers MattyMo, DHP, and Ryan Good; nice seeing you all again! Time passed slowly, but we kept ourselves amused with talk about South Park and Spinal Tap, among other things. Upon entrance I camp out at a table dead center and right in front of the soundboard. This payed off extremely well, and I think you 'leggers out there know what I mean ;)

Anyhoo... the first opening band was GREAT! I didn't catch their name, but they were a cool band that played what I call 70's-Cop-Show-Funky-Music, combined with some heavy prog tendencies. A cool band complete with horn section! Highlight of their set, for me, was when they belted out a fine cover of Black Sabbath's "Sweet Leaf" Also very cool was a bluesy song called "Fat Woman Blues" or something like that!

Oh, I gotta add that this place had a very cool DJ, who played a great selection of tunes before and between sets. DT, Tool, Metallica, Megadeth, Tesla, Skid Row, Iron Maiden... this guy knew how to rock!

OK, next up was Rebels Without Applause... Woah, these guys kicked some major ass! As some of you know, this band has some former members of shred-metal-band extraordinaire, Cyclone Temple. How do I describe their new sound? Take the shred from CT, turn the all-out aggression down from 10 to 7, and through in a good measure of YO/Soul/Hip Hop and voila!!! Standout song was Booty and the Ho-Fish, and the dancing around of frontman and axeman, Greg Fulton... this guy can work a crowd! He can still shred with the best of them! I picked up their demo cassete, and they said they'd have a cd coming out next spring. Talked to Scott the bass player after the show, he's a real nice guy, said they were through playing any CT material when I asked him about it. Also talked about the drummer they have, man this guy is really good. Scott said the guy is as steady as a metronome, which he really digs.

Alright, I guess that's it; what a great night!

Oh wait... you all want to hear about Fates don't ya? :) Set list was the same as reported before. Jason did a nice job handling the keys, I didn't notice any screwups, and the sound was great. The band as a whole seemed to be having a good time, more so than when I saw them at the HoB show. Crowd size seemed smaller than the HoB show, too. Probably because tix weren't available until early this week. What else can i say??? They were Fates, and it was good.

Oh, and another thing, before Fates came on, we were treated to about 4-5 songs of what sounded like the forthcoming Chromakey cd. They sounded complete and very clean, with bass and drums. No mistaking Zonder's style! All of the songs played were not on the three song demo tape that was available earlier. So my only question is, when is the cd going to be released, 'cause I really like what I heard of it!!!!!

This show tops the HoB show in my book, because the opening bands were 1000% better, and FW sound was equal to or maybe even slightly better than at HoB. Plus the encore material was much better! At Fates Hands, The Eleventh Hour, POV, Acquiesence, Monument!

    NP: FW-APSOG Live, 12-5-97 :)
