    *** Some Spoilers ***

    Hey folks.

Just got back from Fates Warning at Jackhammers in Schaumburg IL,
(12/5/97). It was quite the show!
There were 3 shirts available, all new for this leg of the tour.
One was like a fleece-looking kind of pull-over, in black with a FW
logo on it. One was tan, with 4 band pictures on the back and
various art on the front (Very cool) and one was a burgundy long
sleeve shirt (The coolest thus far).
2 opening bands at this show. The first was called "Lou something
or other." It was like an Italian name, beginning with a G, and it's
not important... what IS important is that they were annoying and not
very talented. Their guitarist made Kirk Hammet look like he uses
the wah pedal modestly. They sucked ass.
The next opener was the first real surprise of the night. They were
called "Rebel Without Applause," which most everyone thought was a
stupid band name. They are EXTREMELY good. Power grooves, similar
to Pantera at times, and similar to Megadeth at others, with a
soul-ish vocalist (something akin to Doug Pinnick). They were heavy
as hell, with a great, great drummer. Their tightness was enough to
knock you off your feet. Their album will be out in February. If
you see it, check it out.
Tearing the RWA gear down after their set, I noticed some very
depressing music on the PA... and something was very familiar.
Having never heard it before, I can't be positive, but I sincerely
believe that we were hearing Chromakey (Kevin Moore, Joey Vera,
and Mark Zonder). Sounded excellent, whatever it was.
Fates came on, and just RIPPED IT UP! The keyboardist is right on
(FINALLY!) and the band performed as well as I had hoped. Perhaps
better! They played through APSoG flawlessly (Despite a bit too much
flanger on the bass at one point... Joey was having a tough time
changing it with his foot... had to have the roadie come on stage to
fix it). The REAL treat, though, were the 2 encores!!! They played:
At Fates Hands, The Eleventh Hour, Acquiescence (from Ivory Gate of
Dreams!), Point of View, and Monument! What a set!!!
Perhaps the coolest thing of the whole evening, was that I had my
digital still camera with me! I managed to take 58 pictures at the
show! Joey and Ray both clearly saw me taking shots (I had heard
from a reliable source that they don't mind that sort of thing) and
just smiled, posed and gave me the thumbs up! Rock and Roll! After
the show I made sure to go thank Joey for being cool with that sort
of thing. He said he doesn't mind it at all unless there's flashes,
which he said piss him off. He basically said as long as you're not
being a distraction to the other fans in the crowd, and as long as
you aren't taking flash shots, he doesn't mind cameras at the shows.
Bootlegs may be another issue altogether (No, though I wish I did, I
    did not bootleg this show).
Anyone wanting to see these pictures in a hurry (before I edit them,
and crop to make them all look as good as I can) can get the better
    ones at http://www.prognosis.com/livefates
I'll make this into a web page soon, so it won't just be a cheesy
index. Please note that these are very large, and some are very
blurry. As I say, I'll go through and edit, and make a real gallery
of the better ones. Please, though, if you're going to take any of
these shots, don't use them on your web page without asking first. I
still have the original copies, and this was a lot of work, so I'd
like to be the one who presents them on the web for everyone!
            Enjoy, and take care.

BTW, Ytsejammers, I just thought you'd want this info... respond to
me personally, and not to the jam, if you want me to see it.

Hey, I suppose it all depends on where you're from - it's almost impossible to get any DT or FW in South Africa. You can order Awake, wait 3 months for it and then pay the equivalent of $45 for it. I try get all my stuff in Europe but since I only go over every 6 or 9 months it can be a real pain. I have a bootleg of WDADU, but no-one here even knows how to get hold of it on order, Can someone help me out with a mail order address? What you guys call rarities we call impossible. Anyone have an idea whether DT will ever come to darkest Africa? There's a fairsized fan base here who would kill to see them live. Thank God for liveconcerts.com!

Hello all, Just putting this out there for those who didn't see it the first time around: Well, its Xmas time, and I need money, so I'm putting up three Mike Bahr creations for sale: Critical Mass, Darkest of Winters, and Precious Things. All three are sold out, so this is the only way to get originals. I figure auction format is the best way to do this, so I'll take bids up through Monday. Starting prices: CM-$50; TDoW-$25; PT-$25. All prices will require an additional charge of $3 for shipping and handling. Let the bidding begin. _______________________________________________________ "Luminous beings are we, not this crude matter..." -Yoda, the Jedi Master _______________________________________________________ Andrew Forcier a.k.a. With all this talk of the most collectible items I thought I would throw in my little treasure.

I guess I am lucky. A few years back when I first got into Dream Theater I found a vinyl copy of WDADU. Was their only one pressing of this? It carries both the MCA and Mechanic records logo. It says Pressed by MCA for Mechanic records... Or something to that effect. I think I got it for $5 and its in Mint condition.

Time for me to write a concert review too...

    Yesterday I saw Pantera/Coal Chamber/Anthrax.

Coal Chamber: Honestly, I liked the CD but I haven't been listening to it much. But I don't know, seeing the stuff live is kinda weird... because when I saw them playing live, I thought... man, this sucks... the guitar player only plays the same 3 or 4 chords all the time and doesn't know how to play any leads. Most of the time he stays on this down tuned E chord for the whole song. The chick bass player can't play for shit and makes it really obvious that the thing is coreographed. The drummer can do his shit, he's good in a Dave Grohl kinda way. And the singer... he's a bad actor. He makes it obvious that he's acting up, that's not him up on stage. His voice is cool though, I just wish they had songs where he doesn't repeat the same fucking phrase like 124 times during the song (this is the way it has to be.... this is the way it has to be.....). You know what? These guys, collectively, have less talent than Nirvana. And I hate Nirvana. I guess that means I hate Coal Chamber now.

Anthrax: Man these guys rip. I had seen them before playing with Fight in Atlanta (awesome show too btw). Frank Bello always amazes me, he and Scott Ian really are the life of the party, Charlie Benante is great as usual (I think he outperforms Vinnie Paul SO easily), and John Bush... I didn't like the guy at first, I always preferred Belladona... but he rips. John Bush has one of those cool cool cool COOL voices, and he knows how to use it. He knows how to work a crowd. Perfect show. These guys are still around because they love what they do, and it shows.

Pantera: OK. I'm gonna be eaten up for this one, but I'll say it. Pantera sucked. The sound got bad again (it was never good, but during Anthrax it was not in the way of the show and you could hear everybody fine). Maybe it was because of the 16 Randall heads and cabinets laying on stage (by the way, none of the Randall heads was turned on. I'm pretty sure Dimebag had a few Marshall heads back behind that wall of Randalls - I've seen it when I hung out backstage at Obituary, people do that crap to get money from the companies, but they don't use their stuff, just the cabinets). Rexx also had 16 Ampeg cabinets, and I bet he does use those Ampegs :-). Phill was really fucking drunk. He started preaching his redneck bigot philosophys that took no long to really piss me off. Why is it that he has to talk for 10 minutes between songs? I left after 45 minutes of their show, and they had played like 4 songs by then. It completely sucked, and there were more people leaving when I left. If Anthrax hadn't been so fucking awesome, I would have felt cheated. But Anthrax was worth the price of the ticket alone.

    That's it for now...

I'd like to believe you're alone. :-) 1) I don't see the minimalism you're talking about 2) APSoG is obviously an album that requires many listenings for one to be able to really "get it"... give it a few more tries (maybe on a rainy day... it almost changes the whole listening perspective...) My fave track off the CD is 12... I really love that little guitar patterns that repeats throughout the song... kinda reminds me of something Roger Waters would write... (wait, he did, it's called The Tide is Turning! awesome song btw) :-)

Well, I'd be happy to know what exactly James is saying there. It seems to me:

"Just hang on a second" "Let me study the (your??) language before you talk to me(???)"

I don't remember exactly by heart what he said, but it was along these lines and I'm not sure what he speaks after the word "before".

I believe this speech is related to the Kobe earthquake in Japan that occured in early 1995 while DT was touring over there. The Japanese guy is probably asking the crowd for a moment of silence for those that lost their lives in the quake. I can't be positive of this since I don't speak Japanese, but I really think that is right. C-ya,

What do you mean by "minimalist"? New Age? If yes, I don't think we can even start to argue, since our point of view of the album aren't related at all.
