It's called "Sarajevo 12/24" because it also appears on Savatage's album
Dead Winter Dead.
As for what song it is, the first 0:55 is "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen,"
the rest is (approximately) the "Carol of the Bells".

"Sarajevo 12/24" first showed on Savatage's "Dead Winter Dead," but I don't
think that's what you meant. :) The Christmas carol that it's based on is
called "Carol of the Bells." It's a really cool song which has seen lots of
remakes over the years; one of the more interesting ones (aside from TSO's
of course) is by Chip Davis' Mannheim Steamroller.
Very cool to see TSO advertised on TV. Anybody wanna place bets on how long
it'll take before it sells out this year? :)

Anyone who received/recorded the Realaudio concert, whether into DAT or cassette (DAT obviously preferred)... please get in touch with me if you have the time, as I'd like to make you an offer for your master tape (one that would certainly involve you getting it back as well).
I just got back to reality after a blissful 1st anniversary weekend with Melissa. And holy shit, do I ever have a lot of mail to answer. I imagine it will all clear up soon enough.
Queensryche: Visions of Another Time is ready to ship; I'm just awaiting the liners. Other than that, it's locked and loaded. I've got about 30 CDs of it already done. I think everyone will really dig this one. With the exception of the tape side/section changes, each track progresses seamlessly into the next, which is something I can do with music now that I have a sufficiently good computer to do it with. I shall continue to "properly" master these CDs to the best of my ability in the future. Yes, this does involve recording the entire thing onto an 800-meg WAV file and manually segmenting it (AECC won't cut it), and without a P-200, I wouldn't even attempt it. (and it's STILL slow!)
Props to the fellow who chimed in about Anastasia. I actually went to see it _again_, and I'm now convinced it's superior to most, if not all, of the Disney offerings of recent years. Only Beauty and the Beast rivals it, with a critic's honorary high mark to HOND. i wonder what Dream Theater would sound like playing pseudo-Russian melodies in their prog-rock arrangement?
Anyway take care all... I'd better get cracking on replying to all of you. It may be a landslide of mail, but I wouldn't trade it for an empty mailbox, no sirree. :)

Wow, Mike.
You're right. It is really a pain in the a$$ to do this. You have to listen to this big WAV a thousand times to see where you should cut the WAV... This takes a lot of computer "power" and if you don't have a fast computer, fast hard disk and lots of memory, you'll have to stop your other activities for a month. :-)
If you plan to do some noise reduction, then you're lost... And when we're talking about those bands that do those damn long songs such as Dream Theater, things just get worse. :-)

No, no. I actually heard it before Dead Winter Dead (and I only heard this album once, when Marcelo Vanzin brought the CD here at home). But now some kind (thanks Jay, thanks Vinnie, thanks Phil) people told it's called "Carol of the Bells" (I knew it had other title :-) ). Thank you all!
BTW, the first time I heard this song was when I downloaded an S3M file from the Internet, I think in 1994 or 1995... It consists of 3 Christmas carols (well, so says the text file that comes with the song) and is very cool. I have it right here with me, if you want to hear (I can put it on my homepage).

Funny, I've got the same two discs in my changer now also. After seeing DT in concert the other week in DC, I've been in a prog. metal only mood. The following discs are what I've been listening to in my car:

I agree that when listening to Rush, I tend to lean towards the older albums, although I think they reached a secondary peak in the Power Windows, Hold Your Fire, and Presto era (the more recent albums are somewhat disappointing in comparison).

Back from my turkey day break. Now I'm back at school and way behind on jams....
I happened to pick up 2 new CD's, but they aren't DT, so I will only say a brief word, I promise. :)
1) ReLoad by THAT band. I don't really like it because it's THAT band and this is what they have become, but the recording quality is sweet.
2) Days of the New by Days of the New. KIIIIICKASS! If you like bluesy yet also jazzy acoustic sounds, but with AiC-like vocals, this is for you. It's sweet stuff. I've listened to this CD like 6 times already, whereas I could only listen to the previous CD only twice....
Guess that's all from the guitar-playing freaky gurl today. :)

Your scribbler Mitchell Foy seems to have problems with the purpose of reviewing a CD (Dream Theater, Falling Into Infinity). It seems 'virtuosity', or even a reputation for it, is a bad thing. Apollinaire said 'talent without genius is nothing', but genius without talent is nothing too. If Foy finds talent in a band so off-putting, maybe he should find some other employment. Given that none of GnR, Asia, Cinderella, Extreme and Rush find any favour with him and he doesn't mention any other band he might prefer so we can get a context, maybe he should stick to a form of music he knows something about - presumably talentless, ephemeral, sampled drivel, to take the opposite of what he doesn't like.
According to Foy, are you supposed to be 'over-boistrous' with 'cojones', or are you supposed to be 'wimpy'? Where is the pop-rock he mentions? It's hard to take a review seriously which is so inherently contradictory and agenda-driven. What's the point proving that people who don't like prog rock, don't like prog rock?

On another note, does anyone else think that some very good guitarists tend to get worse with age? Why should that be? I'm thinking of:
Ritchie Blackmore - peaked 2nd half of 70s Yngwie - Superb debut album, dropped off from 'Eclipse' onwards Tony Macalpine - still good, but doesn't 'grab' me like the older stuff And a lot of guitarists I don't know mentioned on the 'jam whom everyone says are past their prime (Michael Angelo?)

Cool :). I only wish MTV US played some of that good stuff! Though I am getting spoiled watching The Headbangers Show on MTV Latino. I only wish they played less thrash and more prog. *sigh*. Though, they did MENTION Dream Theater. One of the bands they interviewed (in Spanish) said the words Dream Theater in a sentence. Now if I only understood Spanish. I'm pretty sure they were talking about the bands influences, though. I think. They could be talking about the bands they hate the most. If only I knew a bit of Espanol (beyond that word), then I could tell you. *sigh* They did play one of Death's more recent vids off of Eternity last week. That was a nifty song. I kinda liked that one(forgot the name of the song totally. Oh, and the most interesting videos played on a heavy metal video show? Led Zepplin's Whole Lotta Love, and Deep Purple's Perfect Strangers. I still think DT does a better version of that than Deep Purple does.
