To Eckie and all,
I think OK Computer is awesome. There's little if no technical
brilliance, but the writing is outstanding. I've never heard such wacked
chord progressions that work. I really want that albom. It desimates the
last one.
Can someone e-mail me URL's for Focus, Yuli jon Roth, and Michael
Schenkar? I love these guys and I want to see discographies so I can plan
on picking up this shit. IMHO, Focus' Hocus Pocus makes Gary Howey look
like a poser. Be well.

yes, it is just as good, but if you're expecting something in the same
up-tempo vein, you'll be disappointed. most of it less beat/percussion
oriented. it is superb music, however. if you have an open mind toward
music, you will love it.
by saying that she is a great musical researcher, i am referring to the fact
that much of her music are highly researched and documented poems or works
of renaissance/celtic/middle ages literature which she then sets to music.
one example is a musical version of "the lady of shalott", which is on her
previous album, "the mask and the mirror" (which is also superb).
so, basically, she's not only a musician, but somewhat of a musical
anthropologist as well. she travels quite a bit not only performing,
but researching music.
all of this aside, i highly recommend "the book of secrets". be aware,
however, that she is not a rock musician, and the bulk of her music is
not rock-oriented. "the mummer's dance" is, however, a fairly decent
representation of the types of sounds she uses (though to my recollection
it doesn't have any harp in it, which she uses pretty extensively).

I've got lots of boots but don't think any are real scarce with the exception of Conciously Unreal-think Bahr said that was a tough one to find-and Majestic Harmonies which I havn't heard anything about as to how rare it is. Most likely my rarest item is my color silk Awake flag that's decorated w/ the Lie single pic-at least it's the pic on my particular Lie single. Or if you remember Mike's bass heads during that tour, that's it. By the way, if any of you out there w/ I&W posters don't want them any more I'll gladly help ya out=)

Have fun at the record store. This is one of the most amazing albums I have *ever* heard, bar none. Anyone out there into ethereal vocals in the vein of Enya - but with a LOT more substance behind them - owes it to themselves to go out and buy this album. She is, IMHO, *THE* female performer out right now.
As far as her being a 'musical researcher', the linear notes of her album are as interesting as the album itself. She basically goes on these musical pilgrimages (sp?) and writes songs based on her journeys. 'Book of Secrets' chronicles her voyage to discover Celtic music, not just from Ireland, Scotland and England, but from the Celts in Greece and Italy and even the Middle East. Amazing. I have yet to listen to this album and NOT be blown away by it.

My ears, my friend, are perfectly clean. As far as I'm concerned, I'm all set with listening to second-rate DT.

Thank GOD that someone agrees with me on this. I thought I was the only person in the United States who thought that Bjork is why animals eat their young. I saw her in concert with the Sugarcubes with PiL and New Order (two GREAT bands), and they were the most inept, pathetic act that I have ever experienced (and I've seen Fluffy). She hasn't gone anywhere since then.
All her problems can be solved with a 40lb. sledgehammer in the base of the skull.

Kerry King wasn't ever in Metallica. He was with Megadeth for a short while when they first started out.

OK, within all this DT vs FW crap thats been going on, i still havent found what I'm looking for (no pun intended). I think Clark was looking for this as well...where are the complexities that everyone talks about? No, I'm dont mean fast supershred solos, or crazy unison riffs. I KNOW FW arent DT...I'm not looking for another DT. But really, everybodys saying that we have to listen a lot to FW to find the 'hidden complexities'. Well I've listend to APSOG for quite a bit, and aside from parts V, VIII, and XI..i'll ad part XII to that as well because its a pretty nifty ending, it still sounds like a bunch of rather simple songs tied together by fade-ins and fade-outs.
Now is the awesomeness found in the lyrics maybe? THat'd be understandable, since if i dont relate to the lyrics i wont be 'getting it'. But I'm really looking for a rather in-depth explanation of what makes APSOG such a work of art. Maybe even if i still wont like them that much, at least i'll understand why so many ppl love this album so much.
take care, Ernesto

I dont know about his bass playing, but I've always understood that Burton was who taught James all about harmony and stuff...so if it werent for Cliff we would've never had songs like MoP...In fact i remember reading somewhere that he was the guy with the balls in tha group. Think about it...the other 3 guys were going around with belts made out of bullets looking like a bunch of metal poseurs, and here's this guy wearing bell-bottoms...hehehe. And in concert he was the life of the party, if you see 'Cliff 'em All'. Then after he died, Jaymz had to take over as a real 'frontman'.
Ok, enough talk about this,:) Ern

All of my info on the satanism came from the MegaDeth faq so I guess the faq facilitators are in error. Allthough the impression I got was that Dave felt that Witchcraft was indeed real, and even dangerous. I never did see anything that would indicate he supported witchcraft, it mainly said things like he used to like that shit and now he feels that it's wrong. He wrote about his experiences and one of the songs is indeed about a hex or a curse that he felt really bad about. I believe that song was listed as "In My Darkest Hour" in the FAQ--I could be wrong. I don't really agree that Dave is a "christian"... If so I haven't heard anything about Jesus in his songs. (not that I really want to--but Christians who write music usually write about their spirtual inspiration)

Who the hell is Lorenna Mckinnet? What is Mummers dance? What is the Book of Secrets? I never said anything about that...

I'd have to say that my rarest DT item has got to be the rarest of them all: an original, still sealed, MAJESTY DEMO TAPE.
I got this as part of a complete Majesty "Press kit" from their old manager (from the majesty till WDADU days) about 1.5 years ago...
Cool stuff really, I'll have to scan it all into my webpage someday.

here's my two cents to the Fates Bashers.........
with all this talk of the complexity of Fates Warning and the complexity of Dream Theater some of you have been propented to give Fates a spin.... I will warn you right now don't expect Fates Warning to sound like Dream Theater because they ARE NOT DT! Fates Warning has their own unique sound as well as style.. and besides we've already got enough bands out there copying our beloved DT stylistically.. but sorry Fates is not one of them.. If you want the flashiness of Petrucci's style listen to Fates back in the day of John Arch.. pick up a copy of Awaken the Guardian and you will not be dissappointed.. Just don't expect Arch to sound like LaBrie...
Jim Mathoes is much more laid back now..but that doesn't mean he can't play.. clean out your ears and maybe you will hear the complexity of APSOG...but like others have posted here..don't expect it to hit you over the head...it takes sometime to sink in...if you want music that you don't have to think about .. go listen to MTV.. i hear Metallica is on right now...

>AlternicA is by no means progressing... they are playing rockabilly >with a little crunch... That SNL performance was the biggest >spectacle of how far a band can go down... that isn't METAL... >that's a load of dung...
Two points. 1) Selling out is not progress in music, it's progress away from taste and towards the bank. 2) What Metallica is doing is not progress. Just because it's different doesn't mean it's good. Just because it's different doesn't mean it's progress. In fact, I don't think it's really that different from a lot of crud already out there. Yes' 90125 is still a boring album, even though it was different.
>That's fine... I'm a die hard subscriber to the "Retardica has sold >out" school... Portnoy is correct in his judgement...
Which is why I'm not so worried about DT going the way of Metallica, Genesis, Yes, ELP, Rush, Queensryche (although you gotta hand it to QR....I like Empire and PL, even though it's not metal or anything)....etc, etc, etc. Portnoy seems like he's too adventurous to be a part of a sell out band, and I think the enthusiasm he has (why the fook do you think they call him Animal?) will inoculate, if you will, the other DT members against the lure of big $$$.
To the guy who thought he was talking to Myung's brother....uh, yeah. Right. Just like xdtvoc1 was Dominici.
Re VDGG....I have Godbluff and Pawn Hearts, and both are excellent...really insane stuff. Take early Genesis, take out the whimsy, put in all the gloom and doom you can find, add a sax player, subtract a regular guitarist....and make it is dissonant as possible. The vocals are truly bizarre (cross Geoff Tate and Dave Matthews) but they fit perfectly. R. Fripp of King Crimson guested on Pawn Hearts...P.S. VDGG doesn't really have different phases....the two I have are from different phases, and they sound pretty close to each other...I don't know about the compilation albums, but I tend to avoid those (cf. the FW debate....most FW-haters heard Chasing Time first, I think)
