Well, a few of them were just me being a dumbass (I prefer 'Deth to Metallica
any day), so don't worry about it. :)

You're right, stole is a bad choice of words, as they did give credit. Let's
just say that they should have had the decency to come up with their own
material if they wanted Mustaine out of the band.

People have mentioned the "Cliff 'Em All" video a few times. I haven't seen it,
so I don't know, but as I said in a previous post, McGovney (who was their
original bassist) claims to have been at the scene when Mustaine was booted and
his talking about his equipment and such, so it sounded to me like Mustaine left
before Burton came. I could be wrong. If so, McGovney must've been in and out a
couple times. Just for everyone's knowledge, the original members were:
Vox - Hetfield
Drums - Lars Ulrich
Bass - Ron McGovney
Guitar - Lloyd somebody, Mustaine
That's according to two sources. Who knows, maybe it's wrong.

Whooa!
I still cannot believe it! I was at the show in Hamburg, Germany on Dec. 7th.
You know, a friend of mine and I just were there hours before the show started
and right next to the club there was a chinese restaurant. As you might
already guess, we thought 'Man, maybe they just hang out and eat s/th.' So we
just looked carefully into the restaurant, and YES there were Derek and James!
Fucking amazing. Actually we entered the restaurant, knowing that they really
do not like being disturbed while they are at lunch. But hey, will I ever meet
them again? So we went in there and asked them very politely to give us an
autograph. They denied and said they when they come out the would sign
everything. As they did! Actually only James. Derek was in a real hurry and
Myung was sooo quiet and cool I almost didn't even notice him. But I was a
little shocked how small (God, forgive me for this insufficient comparison)
James physically really is. On stage he looks much taller. But musically
almost nobody will ever be greater. Derek is really freak, concerning his
clothes. Actually he could do some perfoming for Calvin Klein etc. REALLY
cool!
The show was SOO unbelievanle, I think I just stood there most of the time
with an open mouth! I saw DT on their AWAKE tour once. But it was even better.
Everyone who still bashes Derek for his playing--> Go and see him (a)live!
Sometimes it is hard to tell if that's a guitarsound or a f***** keyboard!
BUT the best thing was at the end. As usual Met. I. But Mikey announced right
in the middle that we were about to hear a WORLD PREMIERE!
Gues what! Derek and Petrucci put on some cool sunglasses and they had a new
singer: DEREK ! He did some cool ass kicking rock thing accompanied by the
other members. The crew and espescially James were standing right on the side
of the stage and were smiling and laughing on and on! That was really cool.
Then they restarted Met. right where they stopped before.
So, that's for now
Gotta chill out

in these last few jams, this has got to be the most times that Ron
McGovney's name has been mentioned. anywhere. ever.
ok, on another note--anyone know exactly why dt has never opened for a
larger band? someone mentioned megadeth, and that fantasy set me
a-droolin'. i would think that dt would seriously explore the
possibililty, given the potential for exposure. of course, there
probably aren't too mant bands that they could open for--given the
stylistic clashes that would be inevitable. 'course, if big wreck could
open for dt, why can't dt open for someone, even if there are
differences?
like megadeth (wow, what a show...).
i know they would sacrifice set time, but in the long run, it might
prove a wise sacrifice.

Hi there,
Around October 1st, I sent out my $15 check to the New York address listed on http://www.rsabbs.com/dt/fanzine/ .
As of December 9th, today, my check has not been cashed (I can check my account history online).
I sent an email to Neil Elliott regarding this two to three weeks ago. I have yet to receive a reply. This is why I am sending this email to the Jam...he seems to reply to messages there. I also cc'ed it to two accounts at Compuserve that seem to belong to him. Neil, if you receive this email a full three times, I sincerely apologise! :)
What I really want to know is whether this is normal? Does it take so long to cash the checks you receive for the fan club? Or has the post office lost the thing? Should I send in another $15 check??
And...the most important question of all...will I get the DT Christmas CD? :)
Thanks! Josh Wingell

Haven't seen any reviews of the Copenhagen gig on dec. 6th. Not much need to mention that they were great - have they ever been anything else? But a few funny things to brighten up your day perhaps?
It didn't start out too well. When James came on, the mic. was placed at the side of the stage so Petrucci had to show it to him. James immideately turned sour. Which luckily didn't affect his singing. He was great all the way through.
Petrucci seemed to have fun. He laid down on Derek's rug for a while, and then he sat down next to Mike behind the drum kit.
Mike played a nice drum solo, and was just as energetic as ever.
Derek seemed content up on his rug. He played out of key once, Petrucci gave him a funny look, but he just kept on playing, probably on purpose.
The silent man was...well, silent. But you could hear his playing loud and clear. He did smile once though, which was nice.
James didn't have the best of nights. He sounded good, but during the encore (Metropolis), some stupid f****r threw a beer up on stage, and some of it spilled on James's shirt. Fortunately, a long instrumental passage followed soon after so he had time to go backstage and cool off. But he was not happy as he walked off the stage. He didn't make it back in time, so we had an extended improvised little jamming session. And after the song, James said something about smashing the guys head in, if he had the guts to stick around, which I'm guessing he didn't.
But overall, it was just great. These are the songs I can remember they played: ytsejam, pull me under, metropolis, under a glass moon, voices, scarred, snippets of ACOS, new millenium, peruvian skies, hollow years, burning my soul, lines in the sand, just let me breathe. Hmm, might have forgotten one or two but I don't think so.
Can't wait till next time...

Ok, I listened to about the first 25 minutes of APSOG today. I did it right, too. I just laid down and didn't do anything but listen. And I still don't get it. Not the music, which I kind of enjoyed, but how people can talk about the incredible complexity of this album. Yes, I only listened to just under half of it, but unless the second half is DRAMATICALLY different from the first, I would call this music simplistic before I would call it complex. I can definitely see where that person was coming from when they said it sounds like minimalist plunking. There is just nothing about it that struck me as "complex". The whole thing has a rather thin sound to it... there's just not that much going on. Not that there's anything wrong with that, like I said, I kind of enjoyed it, but I just don't hear any complexity. I was listening for recurring themes and stuff, too, and the ones I heard didn'tseem all that clever or ingenious. Actually, so far I've only been talking about the instrumental music... I honestly don't want to piss people off with this but I just have to say that I think Alder's melodies are hideous on this album. When I first heard APSOG I thought the vocals might be better this time around but if anything I think they're worse. I mean, to each his own... I'm all for music that breaks conventional molds and does new things. I can appreciate a spirit of experimentation in music, in fact that's why I listen to alot of the stuff I do. But every time Alder starts singing, I couldn't help but think of myself on guitar when I'm improvising and trying to be really melodic, but I'm just sucking that day and I can't get anything going, and I just play these pathetic long, drawn out lines that never go anywhere. Like I said, I don't need his singing to sound like every other prog vocalist, but it really sounds like he's just noodling, really really badly, all of the time. I think he's a good singer, too, but I find his parts on this album to be absolutely painful. I guess Fates just isn't my cup of tea. Fine, keep it to yourself, alot of you Fates fans are probably saying. Well, I would, but I feel the need to respond because some people on this list seem to think that they have some gift that allows them to grasp the greatness of this band while the rest of us are too stupid. I believe that there are people who really love this stuff, but whatever it is about FW that appeals to you, I'm just not buying that it's because this music is so good that it's "beyond" me. I have to conclude that this supposed "complexity" is mostly a myth. It's just not there, folks. I don't see how Fates is any more "progressive", whatever that means, than old Metallica, except for maybe that they segue all of their songs together and call it one long song. I can see the flames coming already, but if you want to be more constructive you might try instead to tell me wherein this supposed complexity lies... I'm still trying to find it myself, since no one has really answered this question since Ernie and I originally posted it a few days ago. -Clark

:-) Well, I used to prefer Metallica to Megadeth, but now I'm not so sure. Let's call them tied with Dream Theater now my preferred band, followed closely by Opeth. The only bad thing: I have over 30 CD's by Metallica (I'm not even counting videos) and only 2 by Opeth.

I'm not sure here, but I think that the order of the facts is this: "first" line-up: the one you described below, then Mustaine on lead, then Cliff, then Kirk (cool guitar player, until he cut his hair -- he should be fired -- can you Samson from the old biblical stories? :-) ), then Jason.
BTW, "Cliff 'em All" is cool. The only problem: it should be longer. Only 90minutes of video aren't enough to document many years of a band. But maybe I'm weird, for I prefer songs longer than 20 minutes. :-)
