God forbid DT be socially aware! That would suck if Dream Theater wrote
songs about shit they have to deal with day to day. I mean, if they did,
then that would be their way of getting back at the record industry for
screwing them over for so long.

Haven't seen any reviews of the Copenhagen gig on dec. 6th. Not much need to mention that they were great - have they ever been anything else? But a few funny things to brighten up your day perhaps?
It didn't start out too well. When James came on, the mic. was placed at the side of the stage so Petrucci had to show it to him. James immideately turned sour. Which luckily didn't affect his singing. He was great all the way through.
Petrucci seemed to have fun. He laid down on Derek's rug for a while, and then he sat down next to Mike behind the drum kit.
Mike played a nice drum solo, and was just as energetic as ever.
Derek seemed content up on his rug. He played out of key once, Petrucci gave him a funny look, but he just kept on playing, probably on purpose.
The silent man was...well, silent. But you could hear his playing loud and clear. He did smile once though, which was nice.
James didn't have the best of nights. He sounded good, but during the encore (Metropolis), some stupid f****r threw a beer up on stage, and some of it spilled on James's shirt. Fortunately, a long instrumental passage followed soon after so he had time to go backstage and cool off. But he was not happy as he walked off the stage. He didn't make it back in time, so we had an extended improvised little jamming session. And after the song, James said something about smashing the guys head in, if he had the guts to stick around, which I'm guessing he didn't.
But overall, it was just great. These are the songs I can remember they played: ytsejam, pull me under, metropolis, under a glass moon, voices, scarred, snippets of ACOS, new millenium, peruvian skies, hollow years, burning my soul, lines in the sand, just let me breathe. Hmm, might have forgotten one or two but I don't think so.

Indeed, I am a kitchen freak. The guitarist is very good, as is both their albums (Appetizer & Spanking hour.) I've tried getting the jam interested before, but there has been no response so far. I know this was talked about a little a few weeks ago here on the jam. I hadn't heard any Angra at that time. Well at Powermad Thanksgiving weekend, I purchased Holy land and Angel's Cry.
I dont see how anyone can say that Angra is a DT clone. Sure Angra is prog metal but that doesn't make them a DT clone. There might have been 5 seconds in one song where it might have resembled DT but other than that, Angra is not a DT clone in my opinion.

Oh well. I say, too bad Chris "Madsman" Ptacek is unsubbed for a while. He would truly enjoy replying to this. Me, I just think it's a shame people keep saying the same thing over and over and over and over again. Everything that was on this post has been said before. This only shows that EVERYTHING in music is subject to oppinions. I think Fates' music has a lot of complexity in it, and I love it, but I have to admit that they're not breaking any new ground with what they're doing. Maybe that's why people think it's not complex - but go ahead and try to play all those drum parts exactly like Mark plays them, or sing those vocal lines and see how well you do it. That's what complex means, right? Doing something that not everyone can do?=20 I appreciate Fates Warning for what it is, the collective effort of a bunch of guys that are just doing what they love and writing songs that I identify with. If you don't like them, fine, but why do you have to justify the fact that you don't like something? If I start writing here why I don't like the Barbie song, do I think anyone would care? If I write about why I dislike Nirvana, would anybody care? So why should I care if other people don't like Fates Warning? If all the people that don't like Fates Warning (or Dream Theater for that matter) started to post to this list, we would probably all clog up our e-mail accounts and the dreamt server would go down. So, who cares. If you don't like FW you're part of an overwhelming majority. Leave us minorities alone. Of course, that is all IMHO, don't take me too seriously :-). Two things... first, no I would not say that that's what complex means. Secondly, I don't find Fates' music to be all that technically impressive, either. Zonder sounds good, but not mind-blowing to me... although I'll admit that I'm no drummer and a drummer would be better qualified to make that judgement than I. But I've never been particularly impressed with the guitar playing, either... solos are fast but nothing I haven't heard a hundred million times, and they all sound so lifeless anyways, like "we're a metal band, here's where the metal solo goes". I know that last sentence is all totally subjective, so take my opinion for what it's worth (not a whole hell of a lot to a lot of people on this list). But no, I said this a couple weeks ago and I'll say it again: Chops do not equal musical complexity. Intricate composition is more what I think of when someone says that the music is complex. Chops are worthless alone. If you want proof, come over and hear me play sometime. I can shred, but I still suck.

I tried to make that clear in my last post. I normally don't, but the implication from a few people here lately is that if you don't get Fates, it's beyond you. I think that's silly, but if it IS true, I want to get it. No one seems to want to help me out though...

If you had an interesting insight into the music, I should hope so. That's just about exactly why I'm here; to talk about how music gains meaning to different people. If Fates Warning appeals to some people because the melodies and rhythms happen to click with some part of their subconcious, then so be it. I will probably never understand this appeal, but that's the way it goes. All of us have musical likes and dislikes that can't be rationalized or even explained... certain sounds just appeal to certain people. But there are also quantifiable aspects to music, and if I'm missing some great and truly revolutionary band who has something new to offer me in terms of composition, then I'd like to try to understand that. I'm wondering which is the case with Fates.

Yeah, it's for real:). I got my ticket today ($23.50). I should warn people it sounds like it's not a very big place, and when I commented to them that it would probably sell out, they said it was almost sold out already! And the tickets only went on sale yesterday. So I'd recommend getting tickets right away if you're thinking about it.
This past friday I went to see Randy Jackson (of Zebra) with the Good Rats and Rat Race Choir (BTW, a good local band who're progressive, so people in this area might want to check them out), and someone there told me he heard Dream Theater are playing somewhere on Long Island on New Years Eve. If so, this obviously isn't confirmed, and it's possible he just heard about the Jan. 4th show and though it was New Years Eve. Last weekend I travelled to Copenhagen and Hamburg to see Dream Theater and Vanden Plas. Here's my little report:
In the train to Copenhagen I met fellow 'jammer Choon-Kang who came all the way from Switzerland and her american friend Matt who doesn't like Dream Theater that much but he had a pen and a paper so what the f... oops... sorry, I mean he was travelling with her to three shows anyway. In Copenhagen I visited a danish friend of mine who had never heard anything of Dream Theater before but after we had some danish beers he decided to join us for the show. When we arrived at the KB-Halle some minutes before the doors opened there weren't too many people waiting outside. And when Vanden Plas started to play (15 minutes before the announced show begin), hardly half of the hall was filled. The sound wasn't very good, kind of the destiny of an opening band... but it got better during their show, the hall was filling up and the audience reaction was quite good (well, is there any DT fan that wouldn't like a song like "Rainmaker"?). Then came DT. It was the 7th time I saw them and I'd say this time was the best! All were in great form and the sound was nearly perfect! The setlist was something like this:
Lines In The Sand / Burning My Soul / Voices / Under A Glass Moon / Hollow Years / The Crimson Sunrise / Just Let Me Breathe / Peruvian Skies / Pull Me Under / Scarred / A Crack In The Mirror / Puppies On Acid / The Darkest Of Winters / Ytsejam incl. drum solo / New Millennium / The Crimson Sunset / Metropolis Part One incl. other instrumental stuff and a short reprise of Metallica's One
After three or four songs the security took Choon-Kang's camera which she had smuggled in, but before that she managed to pass me the three films she had already taken. So if any of the band members is reading this: Next time get the poor girl a photo pass! ;-) James got pissed because of a guy in the audience who threw a beer on stage and said something including the words asshole/come down/kick your ass. I had fun. Ok, there's not much more to say about the show, it was just great. And my danish friend who never heard DT before was impressed, too, even though it must be very exhausting to listen to two hours of music you don't know with this intensity and volume... After the show I talked a bit to the Vanden Plas guys, I don't know if DT came out to talk to the fans later because we left after a while.
On the next day in the train to Hamburg we got to know two other DT freaks from Germany and Holland who gave me the confirmation that there are actually people who are way crazier about DT than me... My friend and fellow 'jammer Jason picked me up at the station together with four of my friends from Berlin who came to Hamburg by car. We had lunch and went to the Docks quite early, one hour before the doors opened so that we could get places in front. I met some more internet friends (hi Andy, hi Doug!) and of course Steffen who finally had finished the first issue of the German DT fanzine "The Mirror". Get it, it's great! Again the show was fantastic although the sound in Copenhagen had been a little bit better. They slightly changed the setlist and played "Take Away My Pain" instead of "Under A Glass Moon". But the best thing had yet to come: During the encore we got to see the world premiere of Derek Sherinian as DT's singer! They played a song which everybody thought to be some classic punk song but in the end it turned out they made it up themselves! Needless to say, they had loads of fun, as well as the audience. This time I had an aftershow pass but unfortunately DT didn't show up after the show... (they have become rock stars, you know...) Anyway, I had a great time and I'm looking forward to seeing some shows on the next tour! See you there!
Now I better stop making weekend trips and writing too long reviews about them, I gotta work!!
