The acoustic bonustracks on the new versions of the Savatagealbums
are easy to explain:
They're acoustic in the sense that the only instrument is acoustic
piano, plus the human voice of course. Zak and Jon have switched
around and sing each other's songs. I only have Power of the Night
and Fight for the Rock, so I don't know who sings those unreleased
songs.
I honestly don't think those bonustracks make the new versions
worth getting. The albumcovers look the same with no additional
stuff, and the soundquality is not improved, i.e. we're not talking about
remasters here.
I have to admit that "Sleep" is interesting to hear with Jon
singing, accompanied only by piano instead of guitar.
FATES WARNING:
I know I should probably shut up and not talk about APSoG, but here
goes my opinion anyway:
1- The music on the album is not complex in the sense that it would
be fast or anything like that. But the rhythms and time signatures
are intricate and Mark Zonder's drumwork is impressive. I know
that it is hard for a band to play this kind of music together
without screwing up. All the syncopations between the instruments
makes it hard to play.
2- To me most of the complexity of the music lies in the moods it
creates. It can be compared to Pink Floyd, Marillion and music by
bands like that. ASPoG is subtle and has lots of nuances. That's not
anything that beginner garagebands do. Feel the music. Relax. Think.
3- If the only complexity you have ever heard is the middle section
of Metropolis and the album Control and Resistance by Watchtower you
simply will not find ASPoG complex. That's safe to say.
4- Try playing along with ASPoG straight through and see if you can
do it just like that. I don't think so, but I don't want to underrate
you either.
5- Opinions are just opinions. If you don't like Fates, sell your cds
and give up on them. Don't worry...:)
FREAK KITCHEN
Yes, Freak Kitchen is a very good band, and one of the hidden
treasures in music. The guitarist is incredible and very original,
too. If you're a guitarplayer you will most likely find it
interesting to listen to Matthias Eklundh. He's one of that rare
breed of musicians that do their completely own thing.
I like FK's sense of humour. Why don't more bands in this genre
have lyrics with a bit of humour, irony and sarcasm in them?
I love the album Appetizer. Spanking Hour sounds a bit too polished
to me, but the songs are still good.
Why don't they ever tour Finland?
I'm open for discussion, not for flamethrowing. If you don't agree
you simply just don't agree. If you think I'm stupid that's your
opinion. No need to tell me I'm an asshole, I know that already.
Don't bother telling anyone else either, because I don't think
they're interested.

Hi all
a bit late possibly, but none the less valid: people intensely wanting to
get into some music that they clearly don't like ("Oh shit, what's wrong
with me, I don't like A Pleasant Shade Of Grey, somebody please help me
to understand this album"). Also include liking band X because a member
of you favourite band happens to like them (a.k.a. the sheep syndrome).
Also include trying to "convert" lesser mortals to prog ("Alleluja brothers,
another soul saved from the bonfires of indie/grunge").
Some people on this list never fail to amaze me with their lack of respect
for other people - some people like Bjork (me, for example), some people
don't, but suggesting that her career should be ended by using a 40 lb
hammer is nothing short of incitement to murder, which just happens to
be a criminal offence in many countries. Probably the same people who
rejoiced when Kurt Cobain and Shannon Hoon died...wankers.

yup, i was there....
no-ones mentioned portnoys COMPLETE freak out half way through the 1st
song LITS, when he was having real probs with his vocal mike crashing
into his face...he completely lost it with his tech and started smashing
up his percussion setup (wind chimes etc)...but in a way it was cool, cos
Ive NEVER seen him play as aggressively as he did in the following few
songs, he was adding loads of chops into the songs which I'm sure he
would not normally do..and also it pumped him up in the ytsejam and i
swear he did the best solo Ive ever seen from him. I think the rest of
the band were a bit phased, there were a few confused faces around...
Last nights gig was, for me, 1000 times better than the awake tour which
I didnt really enjoy (partly cos the forum is a shit venue IMO), and I
am really looking forward to their return. It started a bit dodgy but by
the end they were REALLY rocking...
highlights:
new millenium: for only a year on the stick, myung RULES! Its cool to
hear the stick played in a rhythmic context rather than as a lead
instrument, plus JM managed to get a really full bass sound which Ive not
heard from the stick before- very cool...
voices....WHY didnt they play that more often last tour (or was i just
asleep?)
PMU & metropolis...what can i say, absolute classics..i dont think they
will ever write songs as beautiful as those again (i hope they do).
nightmare cinema - because they played "perfect strangers" which I think
is the cover they do best.
lowlights:
missing the end off "scarred" - thats my fave bit of awake - i feel
slightly cheated ;-)
ACOS - we in the UK never got to see the ACOS shows because they
completely overlooked the UK on that tour, so we only got 2 snippets of
ACOS, but what they DID play was simply awesome.
LITS and the 2nd song (which I cant remember- too drunk) : they looked
distracted and a bit "another day, another gig".
all in all a welcome return to a criminally undertoured country, although
JLB said they were going to do a proper tour next year, which is nice....

them used and get my money back from you? We're talking about $75 that I've
spent on nothing. I'm a grad student. I could eat for a month on $75.

Well I've decided that trying to highlight semi-intelligent and hopefully
stimulating threads is a waste of time because people are so damn touchy.
All I wanted with my comments on escapism and lyric-adoption was to
stimulate some ideas or conversation.
It seems that most jammers have a knee-jerk reaction to anything resembling
constructive criticism. My point about escapism in the lyrics of I&W was
tempered with the point that I still believed the band had to progress but
not into the 'I hate this business and the world around it' type of stance
that bands like Nirvana found themselves adopting.
Ballads about child-abuse are so prevalent in the music world that I would
find it a refreshing schange to find a ballad about something like faith,
hope or even love (thanks Kings X hmmmmm)
Please just listen to what a caring, sensitive and deeply religous fan of
DT is trying to say, without responding with hints at crack-smoking. It's
offensive and immature. I thought the idea of the jam was to throw ideas
around and thrive on the common interest we supposedly have.

Ok, perhaps you did not read my email to the list? Did you just read
the subject?
I said that I emailed Neil 2 to 3 weeks ago and did not receive a
single email from him regarding my subscription. I just want to
know if the inept US postal service lost the mail I sent to NY.
Or perhaps it was lost on its way from NY to the UK? Or perhaps
the US Postal Service found a way to lose my email! :-)
I would not have emailed the Jam if I had gotten a response from
Neil. Yesterday, I saw that he emailed the list and was not
dead/on vacation/whatever, and it reminded me about the email I
sent to him 2 weeks ago. Since he replied to someone on the
list, I figured that this might be a better way to get in touch
with him.

It was mentioned to me by another person on the list that
this is probably a busy time for Neil seeing as how the new album
came out and it is Christmas time. He probably got a flood
of DTIFC requests. However, if I had not emailed the Jam
about this, it would not have occurred to me. Posting to the
Jam helped me out here. I just want to know what is going on.
Why do you have a problem with that?
Hell, I didn't even know that Neil was in the UK until you

Dave (a UK jammer) :) wanted to know if any other UK jammers were at last
night's London Forum gig. Well, I was! :)
It was my first DT gig, and all I can say is "

Wow. Just fantastic. Was that the Liquid Tension Experiment that was
playing before Vanden Plas came on? It sounded cool. Raise The Knife was
interesting with lyrics. Speak To Me souned cool, and The Way It Used To Be
was fab. (Any UK jammers got hold of the Hollow Years CD yet?)
Anyway, setlist was similar to ones already posted, including UAGM, Scarred,
snippets of ACoS, HY etc. Highlights for me were Voices, Scarred, Peruvian
Skies (just awesome...) and the Nightmare Cinema thingy.
Hope to see them again next year!

OK, a reasonable argument and OPINION. Understandable. Kinda
have to disagree about the Big Wreck comment, though....

Matter of opinion. I tend to agree on less of a level. I
personally think that APSoG is a great work.....as are the
songs mentioned above. My view is that is takes a lot of
work to make songs that long to keep a flow. When I heard
APSoG the first few times, it seemed very "broken-up". The
more I listen to it, though, the more it gels for me.
The rest of this paragraph, about FW fans being pompous, self-
righteous and turning non-fans off to even trying the music
out is pretty true....but people say the same about us Dream
Theater fanatics and prog fanatics in general, so it's to be
expected, no matter how douche it is.....
