Hello all esp. UK Jammers :)
Back at work after a hectic night at the Forum. Didn't get home
till about 1.45am as I live in Brighton (a 110mile round trip to
London). So this morning, back in the real world, at work, body f
eels like cr*p, my ears are ringing, the throats rough, and a nice
splitting headache - AND IT WAS WORTH IT :)
Hadn't seen DT since early 1995, so it was great to see the guys
at work. I won't detail too much as other concert reviews have
captured the flavour well.
Vandan Plas was supporting. They received a good welcome from the
crowd and were well appreciated. Their sound is similar to
Angra and Conception, so it was good. However, the guitarist,
(and I write this as somebody who can't play an instrument to save
thier lives) led to flashbacks of Nigel 'it goes to 11' Tufnell
from Spinal Tap during the solos, with his writhing facial
expressions. Did anybody see the resembelance?
I managed to squeeze four rows from the front, but was it me or
was there loads of really big headbangers hogging the front - I'm
only 1.67m, which of you jammers was blocking my view? :) but
with the crowd stomping and swaying I eventually got a good view
through somebody's armpits.
Somebody mentioned earlier about the T-shirts being a bit boring,
yes, they are quite plain and simple, composed of a few squiggles
and whirls and some text. But I still forked out my cash,
and a fiver for the poster.
Did anybody else see the kicking this guy got when the drum
sticks were thrown into the crowd?; he crashed into somebody when
struggling to grab the sticks. I don't think he felt anything as
his mind was clearly on the sticks.
Has Derek been going to the gym lately? He's looking slimmer and
fitter, and looked really cool. I was impressed by the size of
that 'thing' that John Myung was handling last night - you could
almost feel inadequate. His playing recieved loud appreciation.
DT were, I think really enjoying themselves, there was loads of
smiles and grins and laughs esp. during 'Nightmare Cinema' (MP
was hilarious) . The music was great and I look foward to see them
in 1998

Is it just me or do you think that You Not Me is the worst DT song ever,
musically, it is not bad, but lyrically, it is so mindless and just sounds
like a stupid top 40 song.

I pray that they don't make it into a single.
On a brighter note, I picked up the album "Live in a Small Club" from
Amsterdam in a small CD store for a small fortune...my X-mas gift to myself,
and it's worth it to hear the original version of BMS and have a copy of Eve.

It was a joined song, but I can't for the life of me remember what it went into...any other UK jammers who were at the London gig remember? (Possibly YtseJam? Knackers, I wish I'd wrote down the set-list...)
The same happened with YtseJam, after Mike's drum solo, where it pauses, they went straight into New Milenium, and missed off the end of YtseJam...

funny, i think of all the things we do talk about, one of the most common denominators would be "music philosophy." i think it underlies most of the threads, including those surrounding FII vs. the older albums (and what direction DT is heading in), reactions and ensuing discussion about APSoG, and much of what's been discussed around here the last few months....
of course, i'm using a pretty broad interpretation of the term "music philosophy." but we think about music in so many ways, in terms of writing, listening, interpreting, etc., that thinking about the way we think about it (make sense?) seems really important.
hell, if i can't discuss music philosophy with DT fans, there's not a whole helluva lot of people left to discuss it with....

I have to agree with this. What were they thinking inviting Desmond Child into the songwriting process on this one? Pop-40 crap. The rest of FII lives up to my every expectation, but I cringe when I'm too far away from the CD player to hit the "SKIP this crappy track" button. The only semi-redeeming factor is that the lyrics closely match my emotions going through a divorce.

I just ate dinner. I'm sure all of you don't care about the contents of my stomach, so I'll proceed with what I came here to rap about. (Rap in the traditional sense, that is, ie, "speak on") All righty. This girl who I don't know was talking about how she dislikes Christmas carols, and somehow the conversation steered over to people playing Christmas carols on TV. She mentioned that she had seen Yo Yo Ma on Kathie Lee this morning and "some band called...Trans-Siberian Orchestra" on Rosie O'Donnell yesterday. She then went on to say they were a combination of "John Tesh and Van Halen". I started cracking up at this point, my typical reaction to remarks I find "humorous", or "funny", as they're calling it these days...
Thank you very much for the socks and money. I'm wearing them (the socks!) right now, and I promise I won't spend the money on crack like I did last birthday.

I didn't get a chance to respond to the original post, but I think it depends upon exactly how the band goes about writing lyrics about how much they hate the shitty world around them...some bands compose lyrics that are more "progressive" than others on this subject. By progressive I'm talking about the metaphorical aspect of the lyrics; the lyrics are almost poetic. <keep reading for my example>

Well, I will repeat, some bands write better lyrics in even this AREA than others (child abuse). My example right now would be Drain sth; their lyrics are quite "progressive" as far as metaphors go, even though they're not happy (see "Serve the Shame").
Hope? Love? BAH! Who needs that crud!? ;) Seriously though, I find it hard to write or think anything terribly positive, so I don't think that "progressive" should be positive only. As for DT's "newer" style of lyrics, well, go back to "Caught in a Web", "Lie," and sections of ACOS. They may have gotten a bit more down-to-earth with their lyrics, on FII, but it's not like they haven't said the same types of things.... I&W was different, yes, but they may have decided that the metaphors on top of metaphors thing was getting old, or that they couldn't come up with better ones, ne?
