Well, there's John Bonham, for one. Some people thought

Also, there's any drummer from Spinal Tap. :)

The Dream Theater concert in London on Tuesday was, by a huge margin, the
best concert imaginable. Absolutely fucking mind-blowingly awesome. I
thought the show in Amsterdam earlier this year was pretty amazing, but the
London gig crapped all over it.

Since the release of Awake, it became my ambition to hear "Voices" played
live. It happened, and it reduced me to a shivering blubbering idiot. Utter
ecstacy! The rest of the set was wonderful also - Hollow Years was lovely,
Peruvian Skies was stunning, and the rest of it too.

Every single band member was spot on too . . . James couldn't have sung better.
Nightmare Cinema . . . I was really impressed with Derek's guitar playing!
    Cool as hell.

The band seemed genuinely delighted with the attendance and crowd reaction,
and the promises of a proper UK tour next year made me even happier.

It was great to meet everyone . . . Adrian L, Jeremy, Richard, Ben, Chloe, Tom,
Adrian H, Charlie, Nikki, Andy, and anyone else I may have forgotten!

Only disappointment? I was an idiot, and I got too drunk. I'm sure I can't
remember all the best bits. I also lost my watch. I woke up the next morning
to discover that I had all sorts of mysterious bruises and scratches all
over me. Possibly due to some vaguely-rememberd drunken incident when
I tried to jump over the guard rail to rejoin my fellow jammers at the start
of the queue, after a brief visit to Mother Nature.

So, everyone . . . two thousand letters of complaint to Kerrang? Who's
    up for it? :-)

    Graham

The Roland TB-303 and TR-606 (and its successors) were intended as a set of a "Bass Line" and a Rhythm Computer, introduced to the market in the early 80s, and pretty much flopped b/c they didn't lend themselves to realistically emulate a rhythm section. In the late 80s, however, techno DJs discovered them as they were cheap (back then, that is... these days they're part of the vintage craze...), and easy to program if you go along w/ what they kinda suggest -- which are those typical techno hooklines and rhythms that one usually wouldn't think of just sitting down w/ a piece of paper, Cakewalk (a software sequencer -- well, but this again suggests more of a typical "MIDI style") or one's keyboard. These days you can also get software emulating two TB 303s (one for melodies, one for hooklines) and one TR 808: Steinberg-Propellerhead Rebirth 338, or integrated hardware solutions like the Roland MC-303 Groove Box.

I sort of got a different vibe from it.

Lines in the sand, like the imaginary lines we draw for ourselves that we're not supposed to cross. That's kind of what the song represents to me in some ways. Limits being set and lines we shouldn't cross because it will somehow endanger us or others.

    Hi all

First off, a review of an album that has been mentioned here a couple of = times, and which was warmly recommended to me by my CD dealer a few days ago.

Black Jester - The Divine Comedy

To be perfectly honest, I was very apprehensive when I started listening = to this in the shop. Pretty cheap, poor quality artwork with lots of = angels, devils, serpents, clowns etc. I was very relieved to hear that the music = was, however, excellent. After the first 5 instrumental minutes I was = thinking 'OK, now some tight-trousered, high-balled transvestite is going to come screaming in and ruin everything'. I was disappointed - the singer is = one of the best I've heard for a prog band in years. If I hadn't known = better, I would have thought it was Fish. The music is very reminiscent of older Marillion and Genesis (when they still made good music) but heavier, = with occasional traces of Symphony X and huge helpings of Spocks Beard thrown in. How come the singer sings with an Irish accent when he's Italian? I haven't really bothered to listen to the lyrics yet, so I = don't know if they have anything to do with Dante's masterpiece, but I suppose = there must be some link, since the tracks are called 'Inferno', 'Purgatorio' = and 'Paradiso'. This is a must for anybody who likes the bands mentioned above and has orgasms when they see long song times: Inferno: 32 minutes 02 seconds Purgatorio: 15 minutes 11 seconds Paradiso: 24 minutes 24 seconds Overall, a very good album packed with good music, lots of time changes etc, some nice solos (but not over the top) and a pleasant singer. I = can't award top marks, however, for two reasons. One, the production is often poor, with a very muddy sound especially when they do vocal backing. Two, if you think the snare on 'A Change Of Seasons' is annoying, wait until you hear the dinky little tin can that gets bashed on this album! = 8/10.

Good news for the Theatre Of Tragedy fans on the list. Liv Kristine = Espanaes has officially rejoined the band (according to Massacre Records, and = they should know).

Prog cliche number 7,874: church organ.

And finally, a tip for all of the MTV bashers on the list. Point your = web browser to the following address and enjoy http://www.fitshaced.com/3/mtv.html This article is just dripping with hatred, poison and loathing. I think = it might have been written by the guy who writes the lyrics for Tool...

Sometimes life's a bastard - Dream Theater will be back in Germany when I'm in the Maldives for a three week scuba safari. Bollocks.

A final word to those English jammers saying that England will win the World Cup - please do it, if only to shut up the Germans. (will there be special doping rules for the Jamaican team?)

stay safe and happy listening Neil Gallop (nga@software-ag.de) (http://www.geocities.com/Yosemite/Rapids/2321) Currently playing: Black Jester - The Divine Comedy

I feel the need to share the funky-ass dream I had last night with some people, because for god's sake, it has just got to mean something.

I dreamt that it was the future, and we were engaged in a losing battle with Voltron. That's right. Voltron. So finally, all of earth just decides, "Hey, why don't we blow up the planet?" and the next thing I know I'm in some kind of transporter or something and as I'm beaming away, I see everything around me evaporate. The whole planet turns into empty space. And we all escape to another dimension or something...where...the whole planet is just like one big Doom level, except instead of a video game, it's all real.

It just gets worse from there.

A brief follow-up to my earlier post about the London gig . . .

Me and a couple of others said "Hi" to Dream Theater (minus James) on their way from the tour bus into the venue. I enjoyed that. Mike reciprocated with another "Hi", and I got a smile out of John Myung.

Was it just my imagination, or was Derek playing the opening chords to Eve at one point? I thought I was hearing things!

As is the case with many other British jammers, I also still ache.

It was really cool, but man did they look uncomfortable. I thought that one of them was going to fall over from boredom (the guitarist in the middle). Is he the singer? I only ask this because he looked really uncomfortable with that instrument in his hands. I thought it was really cool that they rocked out on the Rosie O'Donnell show. Come to think of it, the show was a highlight in my day. Not only did it have TSO, but I got to see a clip from the new Quentin flick...........Jackie Brown. >Peruvian Skies - Great music. But "There, there it is. I swear he's gonna >murder that poor kid"?! I just can't get into this. I kind of ruins the >great music that this song has.

After hearing the story on which these lyrics are based, I think they are well written. You can always count on JP for a good story.

    >Hollow Years - Once again, great music, but I can't get into these lyrics. >I can't really explain why. The verses don't flow well into the chorus.

That's because there is a pre-chorus separating the verses from the chorus. The line "and maybe you'll understand" runs perfectly into the chorus, especially the last time, when they hold the transition note out for 2 measures (as opposed to 1 measure the other times).

    On a different note:

I've seen people call this album James' best vocal perfomance ever, where I don't see it that way. What's the majority concensus here? Considering I can sing along to most of this album competently (and I'm no vocalist), I have to conclude that James simply isn't using all of his talent on this album. I think his true talent is shown much more on both I&W and Awake, than on FII. TAMP is a given, and we know what went wrong there. But what about the other songs. There just isn't a vocal performance like Voices on this album, at least to me. What do you guys think?

I'm pretty sure that the arm was accidentally amputated in the crash. It was re-attached by doctors, but later developed infection, and had to be re-amputated. This comes from the Def Leppard story, which was sold at the Hysteria shows as the tourbook. This book is like 200 pages long, and has a whole chapter dedicated to this crash/recovery.

    Greetings ye 'jamanoids...

To the fellow who wondered why Rick Allen wasn't fired from Def Lep after he lost his arm: It's called "class." The other band members worked with Rick to find a way for him to stay in the band and keep playing the music he loves so much. For the first few years, the solution was a mostly electronic kit, with triggering pads played by the feet. Rick's gone back to an acoustic kit as of _Slang_ (and he plays better with one arm than many people with two).

To the fellow who decided in a recent 'jam to see how many different people he could offend by insulting them all: Grow up. Take it to private email.

To everybody who's confused because they can't see what's so great about APSOG: I think the appeal of this album is more emotional than adrenaline-based. The melodies and compositions really evoke strong feelings in me, and I think that's the case for a lot of other 'jammers too. If you personally don't "get it," that's fine. It just means you don't like it, it doesn't mean you're missing anything. :)

To all the 'jammers who wrote in to "Poets, Artists, and Madmen" re: Mitchell Foy's stupid review: Good work. :) The Ytselegend grows...

Now, I need to correct somebody *else* in a local rag. The people at INsite decided to call Trans-Siberian Orchestra's "Christmas Eve and Other Stories" "the worst Christmas album ever, hands down" (among many other less complimentary things). That's fine; he's entitled to his opinion, but I thought I'd point out to him that the album is in fact NOT a new release, but actually a rerelease this year because it sold out everywhere last year! Does anybody have sales figures for TSO from last year (or, for that matter, this year)?

    Happy holidays, Phil

For those that, like me, were planning to see DT at the Strand on 1/3, this articile was in the Boston Herald today (12/11) (copied without permission)

    -----------------------------------

    "Providence Strand Closes:

Providence's financially troubled Strand nightclub, known for attracting big-name acts such as B.B. King and Sheryl Crow [cough], has closed. Karen Wright, vice president of Wright Productions, which runs the club, said earlier this week that the company "has been forced out of business due to outside influences." The company lost its lease in a dispute over back rent with building owner Robert Thibeault and was scheduled to be evicted Feb. 1 The Strand shut abruptly last week when, just hours before a show, the city failed to renew the club's liquor license because it owed back taxes to the state. Meanwhile, Thibeault has plans to sell the building to developers who hope to build a parking garage on the site. Mayor Vicent Cianci has vowed to block the garage proposal. Steven Wright, the production company president, said it was unlikely he would try to open a new theater in Rhode Island."

    -----------------------------------

IMNSHO, this situation blows goats. The Strand was one of the best clubs I have ever been to to see a show. It sucks that money-grubbing scumbags can be allowed to do things like this.

I'm particularly peeved because the owner wants to build a garage there, when there are already 3 huge parking garages within a couple of blocks, including one that is right next to it!

I have a particular attachment because the Strand was the first place I ever saw DT live (opening up the "Waking Up The World" tour). Big-time bummer. Hopefully, the 1/3 show will be rescheduled for somewhere else in the immediate area.
