    Hi,

To the person who said the setlist for the show they went to was shortened,
how long was the set? The normal set is right at two hours (:115-:120) if
    that's any help.

Just got done with two nights of seeing Yes here in the SF bay area
and if you didn't go you missed out big time! If you think Johnny Myung
is a good bass player you should see Chris Squire (sp?) play. He makes
Myung look like Courtney Love :) This was :165 of some of the best music
I've ever heard in my life (and some of you know how long I've been going
to concerts so that's saying a lot).

    Yep.

Mike Portnoy asked me to relay this message to you all of you so, here
    goes...

The Janruary 3rd (At the Strand) is no longer happening...'cause it's no
longer open. :) Instead, they're playing Jaxx in Springfield, Virginia.
    GET YOUR TICKETS NOW!

        Should be a great show!

Just a quick note... I may make a longer review of my back-to-back Fates shows if I get the chance...

Anyway, while at the Fates show at Jaxx this weekend, the signs inside and outside of the club have DT slated for 1/3/97.

    Any official word on this?

If anyone gets a chance to meet or talk with Petrucci, you would be doing me a great favor if you can ask him about the ACOS TAB that was handed to him a few months ago. In particular, I want to know:

    1) If he approves/disapproves of us doing this. 2) If he has had a chance to look it over (and his overall impressions) 3) If he can help us correct it.

Maybe someone could take him another copy of the TAB just in case.

I was hoping to go, but can't because of work. Mark Peters is going, and is going to try to talk with Petrucci. But I'm asking all who are going to try to increase the chances that we get some info from him.

Please let me know if you have _any_ success!

    Thanks,

I always interpreted them to be bass harmonics, like on the intro to Scarred, which sounds a lot like BV (and probably was spawned by it)

JM has done a few bass harmonics things, even recently, look at that part halfway through LITS. Before that: Scarred, The Ones Who Help to Set the Sun ...

This group is dedicated to DT and DT like bands so the Jam isn't 100% DT.

    Heyall, howzy?

    >>Anyhow, about my first Marillion experience...... I haven't listened to >>it thoroughly yet, but my first impression isn't too great. Is all of >>their stuff this mellow? It seems too.....sedate for my tastes.

Having just heard Marillion for the first time (in a sense) two nights ago, it doesn't bother me that they're this mellow. I prefer heavier music, but this kept my interest. Btw people, it was a double live album I had bought on vinyl 5 yrs ago (Theiving Magpie), having only played it once, it's been shelved since. Dug it out of the basement the other night after all the talk here. Put it on. Half way through the intro I stopped it, went to the store and bought 2 blank cassettes, then proceeded.

    >>Why does a DT digest only have a 15% DT context ?

Cause "Dream Theater" is shortened to "DT" which is a reduction to about 15% :-)

    >>A small amount of comments relating to other bands would be fine. >>Let us get back to the topic we all signed up for in the first place...

I understand your concern, however, it tends to get very repetetive talking ONLY about DT. I admit sometimes when reading a post about Fates I forget which list I'm reading, but there are a lot of bands who don't have their own lists.

    >>I think the internet can be a big factor. Look at what we are doing here.

Exactly. Since '92, these are the bands I've gotten into BECAUSE of the internet (and a stint at pre-internet prodigy):

Magellan, Shadow Gallery, Iced Earth, Blind Guardian, Gamma Ray, Mania, Chroming Rose, Iron Saviour, Ice Age, Quiet Room, The Gathering, Eternity X, Virgin Steele, Stratovarious, Airged Lamh, Cea Serin, Elegy, Echolyn, Skyclad, Ayreon, Kamelot, Rage, Hyperion, Pavlovs Dogs, Titan Force, Iron Fortress, you get the idea...

Here are the bands I got into WITHOUT the internet: Helloween, Savatage, Fates Warning, & Marillion. That's it. And these four came from a neighbor. Which list is bigger? In the future I'm convinced that the internet will do more for new bands than radio ever did.

    >>But the music companies would take steps to prevent that. >>Copyright laws, probably, or maybe they'd work out some sort of deal >>with the software companies. (In any event, Bill Gates makes more money.)

By then Bill Gates will have BOUGHT the record companies

Anyone here on Prodigy in '92 remember giving up their Magellan tape after buying the CD and mailing it to a guy in Ohio? Here's a five year anniversary thank-you.

    >Dumb question.

The only dumb question is the one that isn't asked.

    >Why does a DT digest only have a 15% DT context ?

Because we, as a group, are willing to open our minds to bands on this list that others have experienced. I love suggesting new bands, as well as rediscovering old ones, and I know for a FACT that I wouldn't know about TSO, Merry Axemas, Symphony X, Angra, and a whole slew of other bands and albums (would you like the list alphabetical or in order of preference?) that are well worth listening to.

Just because this is a DT-based list doesn't mean that ALL of the conversation has to revolve around DT. When you subscribe to a newspaper, do you only read the news and throw all the flyers, comics, sports, business, and classifieds out? I hope not - you're missing out on a valuable part of the newspaper. Same thing here. Plus, the people on this list are all, IMHO, well-versed, well-read, and extremely intelligent, with insights that are often surprising and very meaningful (and I'm not lumping myself in with that lot). It's a good idea to listen to what they have to say most of the time.

On a side note, I broke my EOJ cherry the other day. Woo Hoo! :)

It was really funny...I worked at a mall music store when they started playing Christmas Eve in Sarajevo...I like Savatage and it was funny watching the old people who did not know what they were getting themselves into buy the DWD...Man did we have so many returns in the store of the CD that year! I think the song DWD scared a lot of people. That's all for now, I'm unsubscribing for winter break Kelly

As all of us who own a DT album know, the credits state the lyrics being written by one band member, but the music is almost always written by "Dream Theater" supposedly meaning all five members of the band.(The two exceptions I can think of are Wait for Sleep, both lyrics and music by KM, and The Silent Man, both lyrics and music by JP.)

What I'm curious about is, how are they able to craft their songs so wonderfully if they've got five conflicting ideas running about? Does the one who wrote the lyrics come up with a musical idea and then they all add their own things to it? Is it a democracy? How does this work?

It just seems that it would be a great big mess. That's all.

I just recently got DWD, and I think that musically, it is wonderful! I particularly like "This Isn't What We Meant," "One Child," "Christmas Eve/Sarajevo 12/24," and "Not What You See." However, I think the lead singer's voice is a little too gravelly for my taste. Especially, in the title track, he sounds a little too much like James Hetfield. Any differing opinions?

Are there any other Savatage albums anyone would recommend? I already asked for "Streets" for Xmas, but I was wondering if any of the others would be a good investment.

Warning! Resurrecting old threads in one post! AAARRRGGGHHHHH!!!!!!

I was thinking about when HitNF came out, how some people were talking about fans expecting "Operation:Mindcrime II" and were upset when they didn't get it. That wasn't what I was expecting, but I was still disappointed.

    But that's beside the point.

Anyway, what I was thinking is that QR could put out an album with one 20 min suite, with a storyline(like Mindcrime, but a different story) and then put other songs on the same album.

    Opinions? Flames?
