    'nuff said. ;-) (Jus' kidding)

    Here's a suggestion - if ya *absolutely* have to post a top 10 -
            1) Do a Top 5 instead
            2) Just list your choices, don't explain them in detail
            3) Do it all on one or two lines instead of a bulleted list
            4) Definitely consider shortening the big-ass sig files. After
seeing my old one a few times, I shortened it myself.

    Example: My top 5 of 1997 -
1__Marillion, "This Strange Engine", 2__DT, "Falling...",
    3__Marillion, "Script...remaster", 4__IQ, "Subterranea", 5__Live, "Secret
    Samadhi"

There, see, that wasn't too bad. 3-4 lines, depending on your email
    program. Anyway, it's a suggestion.

Ok, I know this quote was made in jest but I would just like to point out
to people that the big black circle things are not ALBUMS. the music that
is contained thereupon is an ALBUM. An album is a collection. People
have photo albums, right? Are they on a big black piece of waxy vinyl? I
    think not.

    an album is a collection
a record is something that is recorded
an LP is something that is longer than an EP
    vinyl is vinyl

albums can be recorded onto whatever medium an artist deems neccesary, be
it CD or tape or DAT or minidisc or vinyl.

I picked up Trans-Siberian Orchestra's "Christmas Eve and Other Stories"
yesterday at Harmony House. I figured when I asked the employee there
about it he would've thought I was nuts, but lo and behold..... He came
    up with it!

Anyhow, I must say that this is a must-have disc. I can't stand
Christmas music (generally speaking), but this has singlehandedly
    changed my perspective!

Also, I must add that the others posting on this subject were correct:
Your Mom, and other rock-haters will like this CD too (just don't tell
her it's Savatage, until after she's said it's good. ;-) LOL!)

    Thanks guys (for recommending it)

    D-man: if you're in a faq-updating mood, i have an idea. Why don't you
make a "other bands you would like" section, like in the savatage faq,

Maaaaaan!!!!!! What can I say that I'm sure has or hasn't been said of this
Atlanta show? For one thing, this was my first DT experience (and certainly
won't be my last!!! :) Special thanks to Cashman for "scamming me up" to
the front of the line and Wes "Beavis" and a couple others I can't recall
off hand. Fortunately, Paul spotted the Griffith's YTSEJAM shirt! Met the
Vaiman and Co. later! (after the show, that is!) Sorry I missed ya, Adam
Pye!! And the lines outside to get in were just PACKED like sardines!!!
Btw, was the show deemed a sellout?

Paul, Beavis, some fellow Jammers and I were front of the line as we happily
crammed up at the very front wall at the stage. But not before coming out
once before prematurely as Big Wreck were still soundchecking. OOOOPS!!!!!
    Try it again, lads!!

I was pretty impressed with Big Wreck but I wouldn't go out of my way to see
them, y'know!! The guitarist/singer who, by the way, does have a striking
resemblance to Chris Cornell, played a really nice solo in that set. The
bassist did some good thumping and the drummer was decent, which looks like
a dwarf compared to the "beast" underneath the big tarp onstage (MP's
drumkit! :) They only played about 40 minutes or so! A fairly decent
appetizer, but now it was time for THE MAIN COURSE!!!

The Clockwork Orange has spun, the Rooster has finally crowed, the lights
are out and... the band takes the stage around 10:40. WOOOOOO
HOOOOOOOO!!!!! My first dose of DT magic is upon me! First, of course is
Derek. I must say he is truly one strange looking dude with that 70s
wardrobe he was wearing. I loved all the lava lamps and the white shag
carpets too! Long live retro!!! :) One by one, the rest come out and we
are off to the races! DT whipped into the intro with blistering furiocity!
Observing JLB closely, I can see how much of a domineering, confident
vocalist he actually is!! He is moving around constantly and looking deep
into the eyes of the audience with such vigor and passion. He truly loves
his job, I'm sure! JP (or "The Trooch" as I call him) was stage right and
taking command of his screaming guitar to the masses. Hail to the King of
Shred! JM was right in front of Paul and I. Who says JM's the "Silent
Man"?! I heard his bass just fine!! ;) MP is beating and pounding the
life out of those skins like the thunder of the drum gods! The DS-JP
syncopated harmony and the JM-MP rhythm section were in full force, ready to
tear down the walls of the mighty Masquerade. And this was only THE FIRST
    SONG. . . . . . . . . .

Well I'll skip through the rest of the show for now because it is late and
I'm tired as hell. Also, when I'm tired, I tend to blab endlessly :) Here
    is the setlist...

    * some security bastard confiscated my 1000-speed film. tried to con him
with an unused roll, but to no avail. i surrended my roll from my camera
too! (man, those shots of JLB and JM would've been sweet!) oh well,
    there's always memories... :)
** made a surprise reference to our "hero" Mitchell Foy. Oh yes, justice
    prevails!!!

All in all, there are not enough words to describe the magic of a DT
concert! This will probably serve as one of my TOP 5 BEST SHOWS EVER!!!
(IF NOT #1!!!) 'Da boyz were on fire and there was no sign of them cooling
off!! Nobody can describe their awesome technical prowess without seeing
them live! They all seemed to be enjoying themselves, even JM sneaked in a
smirk or two during the set! :) At the bus, they were just as nice and
down-to-earth! Met Vaiman out there too! Got our respective DT souvenir
wall posters signed, didn't have the $$$ for a Tour shirt :( Upon being
asked how he feels being in DT, Derek replied "What?! Are you kidding!?
They're the best!" A bunch of great guys and superb musicians!

Attn: Brandon Vaughn. I talked to JP about the ACOS tab project and to
paraphrase what he said: "Yes, I've received it but I am not working on it
right now. I'm presently working on [the tabs?] for FII." I guess he's
just putting it on the shelf for now. Still, he appreciates all the work and
    effort into your project!

Yawn! I am off to bed right now. I'll probably post a follow-up review to
this later, but not now -- for I am "waiting for sleep". Sweet music and
    sweet dreams....

    ZZZZZZZZZZZZZ...
    Take the time,

In the chorus of Hollow Years, after James sings
"Bury me in the sand", Mike sings something like
"up to the waves" or "into the waves" or
something waves. Does anyone know what the

Also where can I find the lyrics to "You OR Me"?
I wish Desomond would have kept the bass intro to this song.

OK, Jon Oliva has performed on every album. On Edge of Thorns, he just
does keys, as far as I know, and on Handful of Rain he's credited with
"additional keyboards". This isn't entirely accurate - he did all of the
drums (Steve Wacholz just popped in for the photo shoot and the promo video
for whatever the single was), some of the guitars and most of the bass, if
I remember correctly. Oh, and he co-wrote all of the songs (as he always
    does). Talented chap.

Johnny Lee Middleton joined the band for Fight for the Rock, replacing
Keith Collins. He's played on every album since then.

    >Since Edge of Thorns and Handfull of Rain(the two best albums, far and away)

I prefer Jon to Zak. Ask this on the Savatage mailing list and I think
most would agree with me. But that makes me sound pompous, so don't say I
    said anything.

    >And oh yeah, before C. Oliva's unfortunate death, he too was only in some of

    >of Magellan?

The line-up for WoM is the same as DWD, except that this time Jon is listed
as a band member and appears in the photos too.

Hope I got everything right. There's a FAQ at www.savatage.com which is
pretty good. Don't think it's been updated recently, though, and it still
doesn't answer a question I have about "Alone You Breathe" I've had - why
do the lyrics make it sound like Criss killed himself when he obviously
didn't? Must be too deep for me to understand.

OK, I'm heading back home for a 6 week holiday, and
I have to say that as far as the quality of this

    a better time.

In the last two jams I just read there was maybe
10% DT content (two gig reviews, thumbs up!),
80% flame content, 5% sports (hey, I like sports
but keep it elsewhere) and 5% other assorted crap.

I wish you all - especially the good guys such
as Rogerio, RTK Bahr, Dman and Dr.M - a merry
christmas and a happy new year - I'll be back in
    February.
I hope the loud minority that's making
the digests a pain to read can grow up and keep

T-65 days or so.. got me tickets and all.. can't wait!

Here follows a transcript of Kerrang's review of the Dream Theater gig in
    London last week.

Surreal or what? Two fans faint tonight during the show, and there's a
television set on top of one of the amps showing Aston Villa's UEFA Cup
match live - while the band are playing!

You don't expect anything like this to happen at a Dream Theater show, which
is supposed to be about po-faced, virtuoso talent and epic, unyielding songs.
But then, Dream Theater themselves are somewhat of a surprise. Sure,
there's an enormous display of amazing musicianship and, at times, it's
difficult to fathom when one song actually ends and another begins. But
they're also very heavy, very entertaining and very focussed.

Arguably the biggest progressive rock band of the '90s, the band draw equal
inspiration from Queensryche, Rush, Judas Priest and Slayer. Every song dips
and dives through a welter of emotions and styles, yet it all sounds so
natural and fluent. From "Lines in the Sand", through the likes of "Hollow
Years", "Peruvian Skies" and "Under a Glass Moon", they hold the capacity
crowd spellbound. Not only are this lot consummate musos, but they're also
performers who project character, humour and passion - and when they pull
a version of Deep Purple's "Perfect Strangers", it sounds even better than
      the original!

      Surreal.

      4/5 Malcolm Dome

This is definitely *not* what I'd normally expect from Kerrang. Maybe
Portnoy's ranting got the message across. ;-) Nevertheless, I still intend
to write in to complain about their woeful lack of DT coverage.

On a completely different note, I'd like to clear up some confusion. I
(Graham Borland, from Scotland) am not Graham Boyle from Australia. I
notice that Graham's been involved in a few "arguments" on the list
lately, and people have been quoting his posts under my name!

I'm not trying to cause trouble with this . . . I'd just appreciate it
if people could take care to ensure that they're quoting the correct
    person.

Both Monk and Coltrane were way out players in the jazz world. Coltrane and Charlie Parker were probably the biggest influences on jazz after the swing era ended, just about single handedly starting bebop as we know it. There were a lot of other influences, including Dizzy G. and Miles Davies, but these 2 took the art of improv over the top. Coltrane's most famous stuff includes Giant Steps, but I prefer his version of _My Favourite Things_, which got treated with a really weird Eastern vibe. Monk was a really fantastic player - I heard that he actually didn't know how to play but had perfect pitch, and basically busked every improv he did. Is this true, 'cos some of that stuff rules! I'd recommend anyone to go out and get some bebop - it'll give you an excellent source of ideas for your own improv - it breaks away from the typical scalar approach and extends into chord substitutions that actually work.(!) Other stuff to look at if you like that type of vibe is anything with Frank Gambale (Chick Corea's Elektric Band) as well as his solo albums.

Are there actually any other South African jammers out there?

Someone had posted a few jams back that they were having trouble getting WDADU. I was just at a local record shop last night and they had a copy of it there for like $11. Email me privately, I'd have no problem picking up the copy and shipping it (after christmas, the post office is a frigging mad house) to another jammer. Email privately.
