I'd like to add a few cents to the "Whats the best Fates CD to start off on?" (for those interested in the band of course ; not trying to cram fates down anyones throats..)... I have to disagree with those who say that "Chasing Time" is a good sampler to start from; especially for prog-heads on the list. Personally, my introduction to Fates Warning came with the 1991 release of Parallels. I was a DJ (--> I had a radio show at 2am that no one listened to :) ) at my college radio station (WFCS 107.7) and we hosted a record release party. It was pretty cool and both Frank Aresti and Joe Dibiase showed...
Anyways, about half of the tracks on 'Chasing Time' are pre-Ray Adler with John Arch on vocals. Now personally, I can't stand John Arch's vocals on anything..plus I can't say that I have any fondness for the "iron maiden-esque" stype of the pre-adler stuff.... If the first thing I heard from them was the "night on brokken" LP, I think I would have given up on fates. :(
I think I liked all the tracks on "Inside Out" from day 1. To me it was the logical progression from the Parallels CD. I think sometime around then I purchased "Perfect Symmetry" which is also a good album IMHO. (especially 'At Fates Hands' with Mr. Kevin Moore on keys)..However I noticed that Ray Adler does some *wierd* vocal stuff on some of the tracks.... And then there is "No Exit"..the first Adler-era CD.which I still can't get into that much...:(
Anyways, my recommendation for a Fates Starter would be Parallels or Inside Out....for the die hard prog heads you might want to try Perfect Symmetry...
One last point, I don't know if has been mentioned here, but Jim Matheos wrote ALL of the keyboard parts for apsog... Kevin Moore pretty much came in,learned them, and played them for the CD (I mention this because I remember someone bashing kevin or something awhile back for his apsog work)....

TWoM is easily the best non prog hard rock album I bought all year. Or, for those of you who think Savatage is prog (well they're kinda prog) it is the best prog album I bought all year, and I've bought a lot of discs this year.

So, which one is their newest one? Is it Mandylion? I just saw a copy of a Gathering disc at Tower, and it was dated 1997. It had a white snowy landscape on the cover (can't flipping remember the name). What does it sound like? Rough categorical description?

You can also get the Hollow Years CD single from CDnow (http://www.cdnow.com) and from several of the other online CD stores. I just ordered mine from CDnow, and it cost 15.92 (that includes shipping and tax). That's a bit higher than the $12 to $13 that Tim paid, but not by too much.

Actually after "Giant Steps" he more and more abandoned the concept of playing over changes to develop techniques of modal improvisation which finally became one of the paths along which Free Jazz developed as they kinda further developed this technique as to like playing "round about" the mode than "w/in" it. The other guy who got into Free by modal concepts (as opposed to the approaches of say Ornette Coleman, Don Cherry, Pharoah Saunders et al.), though different ones, was Miles Davis, BTW, who then further went to develop Electric Jazz/Jazzrock/Fusion which also had some impact on the development of Prog Rock.
Yeah, modal concepts have almost become somewhat discredited by people who think it was easier than playing over changes... historically w/ these really good players it has been just the other way round, though...

I was told that the new Symphony X will be out in Feb. I'm confident that after this CD, Symphony X will be the kinds of neo prog metal......... Yes, the song has singing, by James LaBrie (on the Antiquities disc) and by Chris Cintron (on the Scenes From a Memory disc) The lyrics are somewhat different, as is the music (which seems to take a more neoclassical stance in some part) Demo quality sound, but overal worth it.
