Yeah, I've been meaning to post something like this for a while. Does anyone
have the scoop on why Caffery left and came back, or as to why Killdrums left
the band? I don't really feel like searching the web right now for a Sava-
    FAQ. ;-)

Thanks!! Oh by the way, I think that the lineup on TWoM is the same as DWD.
And... for those of you who haven't heard TWoM yet, I didn't think it could be
possible, but I think I like this album better than DWD! This album TOTALLY
    KICKS ASS!!!

    Peace...... Matt T.

Hey, have you taped this show, Matt??

And what about the Trans Siberian Orchestra? And Metallica on SNL?

Just for your information, my classes ended (so, I have some free time) and I'm doing noise reduction on the songs of that rare tape which includes "Trapped Under Ice". Let's see how it will sound. :-) And do you compiled your bootleg list? I'm very curious to know (BTW, have I replied to your earlier e-mail when you told me you liked the idea of doing the list?)

Yeah, but sometimes if you've got a stack of jams there, it's tough to make the call sometimes on whether a topic will be beaten to death by the time you finish the last one. Plus, if *I* was to wait until the end, I'd forget all the nasty comments I'd wanted to make in the first place. :) Think about the amount of work to consolidate, take notes, make notes, form witty replies, edit anything horribly out of date, etc. etc. etc......if I wanted to do that much work - I'd get a second job. :)

The reason people refer to LPs, cassetes, CD's, DAT's or any other media is the same reason that people ask "You want a Coke?" and then toss you a pepsi, RC, or Shasta. Say it with me now. Laziness. Not that this is a bad thing. And there is at least some credibility to the theory that if everyone calls something by a certain name, that name, even if incorrect, becomes correct. Anyway, my definition is correct. Check a dictionary. But, to be honest, it doesn't really matter. Call it what you want. :)

For all of those people who flamed away when I mentioned Drum Triggers in the same sentence as ACoS, here is an explanation.

    I&W featured annoying drum triggers.

ACoS was recorded during the I&W sessions as a demo. It was not produced by David Prater + DT like the rest of the songs--it was just a demo.

Therefore, the I&W ACoS demo will be minus the drum triggers.

Nowhere did I mention that ACoS, in any incantation, featured drum triggers. I simply stated that i am glad that the I&W ACoS demo features lyrics, kevmoore on keys, and no shitty trigger productions added.

Does this clear things up? I'm sorry if I offended anyone. ;-)

Well, actually most female singers in prog bands are like alts, though many of them have a much broader diapasone than the 'classical' opera voices. Anneke van Giersberger of The Gathering is a prime example - she sings both ethereally high and underworldly low.

Jon Anderson of Yes is not a soprano, technically he reminds more of the contratenores (or the castrates of the XVI century).

About The Gathering: Their last CD is 'Nighttime Birds', with a snowy-white cover. I've met descriptions of their style as (fasten your belts) 'atmospheric-gothic-doom-progressive metal'; although I'm sure no two people will interpret this soup in the same way. 'Nighttime Birds' is very melodic, which complex vocals, although the instrumental support is much simpler than in DT- or FW-style prog metal. Basically, the music is centered around Anneke's voice. Mandylion is much heavier, with a darker overall atmosphere.

If your definition of 'prog' is centered around DT's type of stuff (or Yes, or Shadow Gallery, or ...) - brilliant, complex, multipart instrumental music, then The Gathering won't sound very 'prog' for you. Rather, they are 'prog' in the sense of Marillion.

Hm. I hadn't considered that the 1992 Live ACoS used triggers. Listening to it again right now, it doesn't sound like it to me ...

    --

Also, if yer gonna trigger drum sounds, don't use Roland's Bass & Drum module. I've listened to it, and it's primarily designed for Rap / R&B type drums. Far too wimpy sounding for metal use. You'd be much better off with one of their dedicated drum modules, like the TD-5, TD-7T or, best of all, the TD-10 with a PD-120 "V-pad" for your triggering (if it's a snare. That way you get the dual head / rim trigger and the positional sensing)

Um, I'm a Roland freak, what can I say? (got the full catalog in my hands as I type this to get the model nummbers right)

    --

I got into Savatage after heraring EoT on the radio, tho it was after I got into DT. I like Zak's style, but do find him to be a bit "Generic" sounding, as someone else said. Jon is very technically rough but highly emotional. I don't really know who I prefer. I like em both, and will get WoM when I can.

Sympathies to Graham Borland for being confused with Graham Boyle.

Coltrane had an enormous influence on Wayne Shorter...who was instrumental in developing fusion in the 70s after Miles and Tony Williams and John McLaughlin set the genre in motion. And fusion had a significant impact on prog. Bozzio Levin Stevens, btw, sounds a little bit like fusion to me. BLS is incredible, IMHO. Not really songs, more like pure improv. This record took a lot of balls to make, even though it really is just a way for the three of em to make some extra money (hey, they could probably use it...it's not like they're Hanson or anything, cashing it in big time right out of kindergarten).

I was listening to Seven Wonders the other day, and fired up the WDADU outtakes from Darkest of Winters ("Dream And Day," and "A Vision"). Man, the latter in particular really sounds like it would fit well with the band's new sound. It's a wonderful song to begin with (Chuckie D actually sounds pretty good on it) and seems to me it's compatible with the FII stuff.

Are there any mp3s up on the Net of Cover My Eyes, Where Are You Now, You Or Me, etc.? Somebody please point me to them, if they exist....

About Liquid Tension...that's coming out in February right? Dammit dammit dammit!! *LOL* I'm rather anxious to hear that.

    >~Eckie ponders a snowball's chance in a flame war

Heh heh. What's the point of throwing snowballs at a mailing list anyway? (Guess he just wanted to piss off Graham. No, not the nice one.)

    >The day you can whip through some real jazz tunes (Not Autumn >Leaves) at 200BPM+ is the day I will bow before you. Go home and >practice!

*LMFAO!!* Can we get out Ornette's "Free Jazz," and have him play the opening few "measures"? *shakes his head* That shit is crazy. Just heard it for the first time about a month ago. I wanted to crawl under something and hide. (Btw, welcome back Chris!)

    >I just read some moronic article by some completely racist, >homophobic, Dennis Leary wannabe on the fitshaced web page.

I thought it was pretty hilarious actually....for the first few MEGS of space anyway. Jeez, that thing was long. No, seriously, it was funny for a while and the guy just went postal and just ended up being juvenile and deliberately offensive instead of being witty.

I hate to sound like an idiot but I usually do anyway so here goes...I've been playing drums for six years now and I still have no idea what triggers do...all I know is that they fucked up the sound of MP's snare on I&W and that's why the drags he does on LTL sound so loud and even instead of being light and soft. Anyway, if someone could explain the newfangled technology to me (I'm mostly self-taught) by private e-mail I'd appreciate it lots.

Interesting thought: a friend of mine who isn't a DT fan (he's got rather eclectic tastes...the only stuff he doesn't listen to is country, the wacked-out prog I listen to, and contemporary jazz/classical) but kinda likes them really digs FII.....in fact, he's borrowing it right now. (Doh.) Anyway, his girlfriend kinda digs it too...keep in mind that his girlfriend has, um, interesting musical tastes....(for Halloween she ran around with some of her residents as the Spice Girls...) I mean, she doesn't go for the balls'n'chunk stuff like JLMB, BMS, and parts of NM, but she really likes HY and AL, for example...Not that any of this is significant in the least *LOL!!* but such are the glories of an unmoderated list.

Sig-less of the jam, unite!! ;)

I'm in DOS, so no cut 'n' paste...

To the guy who repsonded to my query about how many new jammers there are, your post operates under the assumption that FII is a sellout album. Unless I miss my mark, you compared it to TBA and Empire, and that's why we should be *worried* if there's any new subscribers. Do I understand your point?

I don't think it's fair to second guess new listeners like that. It doesn't even seem like the most commercial track has gotten a whole lot of airplay, so people new to DT must be attracted some other way. What's more, if they're joining the jam, chances are they like more than just one song. They would have had to go out of their way and investigate, surf on the web, and eventually come across us. And most people don't do that just for bands they like, they do it for bands they LOVE. There's a lot of bands I like, and only one who's listserv I subscribe to. So, I think it's a safe assumption that anyone who went to that much effort, probably knows about the band and got a few earlier albums and such.

    So there. :)

Yes, he plays his fretless on the new songs live. He does a really good job, but there were a couple of places where he messed up in Atlanta. It wasn't that he lost it on a difficult passage, it seemed like he was trying a new voicing for the first time and didn't like it. On the other hand, when the others came back on stage after MP's solo in Ytse Jam, Myung was carrying his Stick. And, to my amazement, he played the fast runs on the Stick. That was -- surreal.

Was it just me, or did Derek screw up the beginning of Hollow Years?
