    >AVALON - Not too bad, metal with a bit of prog, singer can be
annoying at times, I need to listen to 'Mystic Pieces' some more
though to give a proper opinion.
    >RHAPSODY - Without doubt these guys are amazing, brilliant
    symphonic/speed/power metal, a la Angra/Stratovarius.
    >VANDEN PLAS - 'The God Thing' is great, much more pwerfull
and progressive that 'Colour Temple' though I love that album too.
    >ELEGY - I only have 'State Of Mind', powerful metal with a 'touch'
    of prog, great guitar playing.
    >ROYAL HUNT - These guys really surprised me with 'Paradox' after
hearing a lot of negative comments on them, has a hint of 'christianity'
in the lyrics, music is great, especially the keyboards.

Speaking of Thelonius Monk, anyone know a good album to start with? I've
heard a greatest hits of his that wasn't too great--mainly his "Monk" CD and
that period--but I love some of his standards that others have
played--especially "Tinkle Trinkle" and other very syncopated, dissonant
    stuff.

    Hi all.

Got this morning's East Valley Tribune, and there are a few blurbs and
a photo of Fates Warning in prep for their Sunday appearance at the
Mason Jar. I will be there, DAT in hand, with a CD on my mind. :)
My only question is whether $50 will be enough to get the soundboard guy
to let me plug in, or if I'll have to go mics.

Any locals that are going to be there, let me know and also let me know
what CDs I still owe you (so I don't have to spend 2 hours lookin stuff
up) and I will bring them to you in person and thus save on postal
    expense. :)

This is also incorrect. The term ALBUM as used in this context refers to the printed sleeve, which often contains artwork, pictures, notes, etc, and sometimes even folds open in the middle, just like, you guessed it: a photo album. An album is a book, used to contain a collection of images or other mementos. The music is called *music*, not album, record, LP, etc.

    Hey all...

Sorry to post this, but I thought with the amazing amount of fluff in the past few jams a few lines of stupidity from me wouldn't be minded too much. <g> I seem to be missing Jams 3379 and 3381. Did anyone else miss these? And how, pray tell, can I request them from Majordomo? Yes, I know, I should have saved the letter that came with my 'Jam subscription 3 years, 2 houses, 5 computers, and 2 email programs ago. :)

<BITCH> Just to vent real quick, I wish people would actually go through ALL the jams they've received before replying to something. We get SO many people replying to a post that came out 3-4 Jams ago and asking questions that have already been answered and are in their inbox in the newest digests - if they'd just take the time to look. There's really no need for 10 different people to ask Rick Audet what he meant by "What triggers?" People, read ALL the Jams you've got and THEN, if your question/comment hasn't been addressed, reply. This isn't even in the realm of "Netiquitte" - it's more in the domain of that ever-elusive (for many on this list) "common sense" thang... Jeezum Peetes... </BITCH>

Hold it there Ace-of-Bass! Are you saying that MP does not, and did not at the time of the early version of ACOS (Only available live, as I understand it... the version that shreds way more than the studio EP, with the Yngwie rip off in the middle) use snare drum triggers live? Hmmm... I think you're probably wrong. It's my understanding that most drummers who play loud music play with triggers live. If I read the post correctly, it was referring to the early version of ACOS, and not the studio release you're referring to. Further, just because you don't hear the machine gun sound on the other studio albums after I&W doesn't mean they're not there. You can trigger any kind of sound... if you like Dave Weckl's snare sound more than your own, you can link up to the Roland Bass and Drums module, and it will sound like you're playing his snare. Triggers can be sensitive to different pressures... it doesn't always have to sound like the I&W Attack-Snare. I'm kind of curious as to why yall are jumping down someone's throat for making a statement that you feel was in error... why get your panties in a bunch over something so small and unimportant?

I'm not sure I agree with this printed sleeve theory. It's called an album because of the collection, not because it opens like a photo album. CDs are still referred to as albums, same with cassettes. They're albums because of the collection of songs, like the collection of pictures. Not because either of them look like a book, or fold out. Your definition above is pretty good, but in this case, the "other momentos" happen to be audio songs.

Stats! Don't get me started! They're misused and misinterpreted 95% of the time! ;-)

Anyway, you need to know WHY people joined the jam. Not just how many. I joined the jam because they (DT) were on tour. If anything, FII's release might make me unsubscribe. (Yes, I'm in that "dissappointed" camp.)

    <Start Rant Stat>

Being a long time fan of Metallica and Queensryche, it killed me to see the sales "stats" and how they were interpreted by the record companies, the media, and maybe the bands. Both TBA and Empire sold huge numbers immeadiatly upon release. Followed by statements such as "this is obviously a great new release and direction"! Give me a f**king break! Huge sales immeadiately upon release are the result of PREVIOUS work by the bands. Then they may bring in a few, new fickle fans (or sales) based on one of the "new, accessible songs" (ala Silent Lucidity).

But the band has lost half of their die-hard fans, and the people who bought based on songs like SL don't buy again, because the ONLY song they liked was SL.

    <End Rant Stat>

Ok, so TBA did bring a lot of new fans to Metallica. And I'm sure it increased the sales of previous albums (AJFA, RTL, MOP). I know quite a few people who started with TBA, and worked their way back. But when they bought Load, they said "what is this s**t!". I don't know anyone who bought Reload (yeah, I know, some of you out there did, and you like it...).

First of all, the 5 hr Drive SUCKED, but it was worth it, I'm not gonna get into any kind of review, Paul "Pellaz" Cashman is doing a fine job. The show ROCKED, Big Wreck was pretty cool if you dig Bluesy Rock with touches of Grunge and Country, interesting mix that they did one hell of a job bringing together. They sounded just like the CD, so they get a big WELL DONE. DT kicked ass, James was on, Mike fooled around (sped up the tempo on purpose before John M.'s solo in YtseJam), Mike's solo was too short, John P. shredded, John M. was cool as ice as usual (even when the tech forgot to turn on his wireless on one of his basses). Derek is better heard than seen IMOHO! He acted like a Heavy Metal Paul Shaeffer (SP?) but he played as well as everyone else.

One note, It seemed that he was a little (just a little) envious of the response that everyone was getting (he didn't much after his solo's). Well, I guess I lied I did do a review after all.

By the Way, Paul, I took off an headed home got outside Atlanta before crashin' at a hotel. You guys kick ass, (you know who you are).

I'm no authority on the subject, but had the impression that only happened with music that uses a lot of fast double bass, like death metal, or lousy drummers. Maybe there's some triggering on Awake, but, the fast double bass doesnt happen as often, and its usually low in the mix, so i dont see any reason for it. And i heavily doubt there were any triggers on FII.

I looked up the date of the DT House Of Blues gig in LA, and it's listed as November 11. But, wasn't the RA broadcast of the show near the very end of November sometime? I forgot the exact date, but I thought it was after Thanksgiving. I was under the impression that it was broadcast as it was performed. What's the deal? Did they broadcast the show later after it was recorded on the 11th? If anyone can confirm the actual show date, that would be cool. Thanks...
