No, there's no difference. Mine is the English one and the

Okay, fine; but *why*? Why is the music targeted that way? To make money. A "commercial" enterprise of *any* kind has the goal of making money. You make the most money by appealing to the most consumers.

    >Simplified, catchy choruses (chori?). Music calculated to generate sales by appealing to the >unwashed masses.

To generate sales=to make money. Otherwise, I'd just call it "pop" music.

    >Since this experiment was an "unmitigated disaster," I would be willing >to bet the band turns to its more progressive side on the next album, with >no more "Anna Lee" or "You Not Me" to be heard.

I'd be just as willing to bet that there *will* be an "Anna Lee" on the next album, just like there was a "Silent Man" on Awake. I've heard members of the band numerous times extolling the virtues of putting a "variety" of music on their albums. Rockers, mellow tunes, prog material, and yes - "pop" tunes. I don't see a *drastic* departure on FII, and I wouldn't be too quick to predict one in the future.

"The nineties bring new questions / new solutions to be found / I fell in love to be let down"

I heard the same complaint about that line in LTL way back when. But yet, years later, that song is still one of most fans' favorites.

Basically, you believe the band was pressured to alter the material to appeal more to the masses. On YNM, I might agree with you. But other than that, neither of us can prove it conclusively one way or the other. Hey --

I was looking into gathering some fellow Atlanta YtseJammers for a possible trip to the DT Jaxx show January 3. (Btw, Cashman, Jan. 3 IS on a Saturday so you won't have to worry about calling in sick :) I could do the driving unless somebody had a bigger ride than my Honda, which does fit four comfortably! How about the YtseVan huh? ;)

I am definitely willing to go as long as a few other Atlantans are as well. (I don't want to trip solo!) If you know that you are sure and confident into going to Jaxx, please e-mail me privately. I can go ahead and charge the tickets and you all can pay me back before the trip. This is the closest DT will be until Summer '98 and I can't wait that long!!!! And tickets will be gone soon I'm sure, so we must act fast!

So if you're SERIOUS into taking this journey up to VA, let me know. After that, then we can start on Step #2: Finding a place to crash! :) But let's get this 1st step goin', alright?!

Hope to hear from ya soon... Brian

PS If anybody, I mean anybody have any photos from past DT shows (preferably this tour's), e-mail me too. I can spin some tapes for your time. As long as they are in JPG or TIF formats, I can import them fine on Photoshop. I'm still thinking of the shots that "could have been" from the Atlanta show -- damn Masquerade security!!! Next time, I'll stand back several feet back further from the stage.

As me and my family get into the car to see Titanice today, what do I hear on the radio on 98 Rock in Baltimore but "you not me." I was so shocked as I don't get to hear too much DT on the radio. What do I hear after this song?

    Tom Sawyer.

Fucking amazing or what!! Up until now, the only DJ I've ever heard play my two favorite bands right next to each other was me at my school radio station.

I've seen a lot of messages on the jam about "commerciality" and pressing the skip button, etc. I must add my .2 cents... I think it really comes down to personal taste, subjectivity. For instance, the guy who said that JLBM won't be relevant in a few years: you made an interesting point, however, unless prog music changes, and the record industry (business) changes, JLBM will be entirely relevant. To me, the song paints a picture--it shows how many, many great bands with lots of fans are suffocated when it comes to MTV and Radio play because they don't fit the current popular trend...and trends do change...but the record industry doesn't. The MTV/Radio moguls will continue to spin songs that are trendy and ignore other bands who pursue an artistic direction that is doesn't fit the current tred.

As for the songs I absolutely like:

NM, PS, BMS, HK, LITS, TAMP, JLB, TOT

    Songs i always skip:

    YNM, HY, AL

I like the music somewhat on YNM; At least half-assed. The repetive chorus ruins the song and I could ask for a little bit more musical eloboration. Perhaps I would enjoy the Your Or Me demo better... At any rate, this song is the worst on the album IMO, followed by AL, then HY.

Now, back to our regularly scheduled programming...

Catchy choruses make a song commercial? I thought so too before I heard some power metal bands a few certain power metal bands <Rhapsody, G-Ray, and Awake era DT to name a couple> These catchy choruses are what make these my favorites... 100 miles from being commercial. Actually, what I've heard on the radio is exactly the opposite. I haven't heard a catchy chorus (though I've heard a bunch of poor ones) on the radio in 5 years.

    > Why would the record company put all the effort into the recording, > and then none into promotion?

Exactly. Nothing anywhere on the live gigs in town either. This isn't rocket science. It staggers the imagination what type of mindset is involved here. For one possible explanation, see below :)

    > I'll regard Desmond Child's presence on YNM as a potential reach for > some mainstream acceptance, but that's it.

Yeah, and then they decide to air BMS instead?(Not that there's anything wrong with BMS) What kinds of chemicals are the promotional people on? Interestingly enough, I have heard that YNM was played on one of the local stations recently. So I guess the chemical is of the barbituate class :)

I'd give JLMB a shot, and let the big machines take care of the rest :) It's got the balls 'n chunk early enough in the tune, that the newbie listener might go "hmmmm..., whatz dis shtuff?"

    Kevin:

    > "JLMB" is not going to be relevant in five years. It barely is now. > Its lyrical references are already dated.

Good thing time is subjective and ultimately what is irrelavent, 'cuz I'll still be listening to it. It's one of my favorite tunes on FII. When you go beyond the face value of the lyrics into the underlying theme, it is as old as rock itself! That big stage up the sky must be getting awfully crowded by now :| It's actually quite relevant as heroin use is on the rise once again, not only in the music industry.

Problem is no one is hearing the message 'cuz of the what Pat and others have already indicated...can't hear what isn't making much of a sound :|
