MP did not trigger any drums on Awake. I think that Awake has the best
pure drum sound of any DT album (including FII).

Only bad drummers have a lazy left foot. Mike's drumming is "good" enough
to avoid having to trigger his bass drums because of a weak foot.

I'll give you that one. I would never want to trigger a snare drum.

Most bass drums are recorded by placing the microphone inside the bass

This is up to the individual, but I do not like this method of miking
either.

This is one of the biggest problems with drummers. Most drummers don't
know how to tune a drumset, so they wind up muffling it until it sounds
like a cardboard box. Also, you will need to tune your drums differently
in the studio, than in a live situation.

snare drum head, you can wait on the one. The best snare drum heads are the
ones that are worn a little. <
Why do you think that an old snare head is better?

Ambassador heads are made of plastic.

Metal drumsticks are awful, rimshots or not. The only decent metal stick
(if you can call it that) are Easton drum sticks. They actually seem to
produce a brighter sound than conventional wood sticks, but I'll stick with
the wood.

Triggering is not a bad idea when you have a limited budget. For example a
bad drum set in a cheep studio, is inferior to a nice triggered set
(preferably d-drums). The triggered set also only takes up two tracks as
opposed to 10 to 12 tracks for an acoustic set. If a band is limited to 8
tracks (for financial reasons) electronic drums are the best way to go.

Could anybody give me any info on which Marillion CDs to start off with?
What are their best ones and is their style somewhat similar to DT? I hear
Marillion mentioned on the Jam alot and I am eager to hear more of their
music. The only one I distinctly remember is "Kaylee" [sp?] from the
mid-80s. Reminded me a little of Simple Minds. I guess back then their
music didn't hook me, and it definitely didn't sound "progressive". I'm
sure their styles change from album to album though.

I think Jordan wasn't into the extensive touring. He has a family and
great day-job so I think it would've conflicted with that so he opted to
go with Dixie Dregs. We need to ask him though to really know.
Unfortunately, poor Derek has to be compared to Kevin and
now Jordan . Kind of reminds me of how Steve Young has had to
follow up to Joe Montana for the 49ers. :)
The great thing for us fans is even though Kevin/Jordan left, we now
can get 3X more music. Kevin, Jordan, and Derek on separate
CDs.

which supposedly has a demo version of ACOS. Aside from DT, does anyone know

looking for the song "Christmas Ride" by his defunct band Fight (they were
AWESOME!). Any die-hard KISS or DT fans... I'd love to hear from ya!

OK. Upon hearing tons of references to http://www.thedj.com, I went to their web site. Realizing that my blind ass can't use Internet Explorer or Netscape very well, I used lynx to get the djplayer. Now, I've run into two problems. One, how do I see a list of channels? I want to find the progressive channel everybody is raving about. Secondly, why does the audio cut off a lot? I am using a 56K x2 modem, and it shouldn't happen like that. What the fuck is going on? If I shouldn't use the player, how do I find things through explorer? I have real player 5. Is there anything I shoudl do otherwise? Thanks.

Greetings friends, All this talk about YNM being a bad song and all, I thought I'd add something. I really enjoy YNM because it's catchy and still has some of the writing stile always used by Petrucci. I like the harmonies in the chorus, too. The song I dislike most on the CD is TAMP. Yes, yes, I know it's for his father and it's all emotional and all, but I think It's poorly put together. The lyrics just don't go with the happy sounding music. The one part that makes sense is the bridge going into the solow. That's some emotional shit. Otherwise, I see this guy with a serine smile on his face tapping on someone's limo window and saying, "Pardon me, but would you take away my pain?" And please, no flames about how, "Not all songs about pain and suffering have to be in minor keys" and shit like that. I know that, but they shouldn't be put to music more apropriate for a love ballad. Be well. Matt B

:D WOW. Hell of a show. Now I have a long sleeve Fates Warning shirt, and another great prog metal memory.
Once again, Fates hit the purple zit of Arizona, the Mason Jar, as their final stop. Kinda fitting, how it was the same place they started their tour so long ago. It was great just standing outside waiting for the fuckin' bouncers to let us all enter the building, talking about Dream Theater, Angra, Symphony X, Iron Savior, and how lame the American metal scene is with people I've probably met one other time in my life (the first Fates Warning gig). Hell, we even met up with some folks we stood next to at the other show; that dude who had his cigarette lit by Ray Alder tapped me and Vince on the shoulder and hung with us for half of the show!
Anyhoo, it was great seeing the Arizona Ytsecrew again. It's too bad I didn't have a camera to capture Kizer's face after that waitress brushed up against him asking if he wanted a drink! Heh heh. Thanks to Mike Bahr for the little post-show bootleg distribution, and for hangin' out with Vince, me and Rob at IHOP after the show. It's too bad your batteries died out in your DAT dude, it would've been an awesome bootleg.
Enough of this banter! THE REVIEW!
Band #1: This band was boring as all hell. Straight forward rock 'n roll, with He-Man on guitar and Wierd Al on drums. I think they had at least one song break their two chord envelope. :P The lead guitar was so tasteless it made me want to take the dude's crap ass guitar and hit him upside the head with it. Oh well, at least they're up there playing what they like to play....crap.
Band #2 (aka Poet Shaker): I was totally expecting a DT/Fates rip off band when these guys were setting up, with a keyboard, guitar, bass, drums and vocalist. Definitely progressive, and DEFINITELY KICK-ASS! I was very impressed with this local group, and I hope some executives will take the incentive to put this group on a label sometime. The singer was great, he conveyed the moods and emotions of the vocal lines beautifully. The keyboard solos and guitar/key harmonies were just AWESOME. I'd like to follow this band a little more. :)
Band #3: I wasn't expecting an Austrian group to be playing the Mason Jar. Oh well. They were pretty fun. I couldn't hear much of their mix from my point (on the side, behind the big fuckin' monitor blocking off the entire stage from view). Their songs sounded like Slayer with cookie monster on lead vocals. They ended their set with this cool Russian metal song that just made me wanna squat kick with my arms folded.
Band #4: Kiss cover band? You'd think, considering the amount of make up these posuers put on. I tell ya, they brought everything but talent and good taste to the stage. Smoke, flashing lights, and body parts hanging off your drum kit aren't a good substitute for musical talent. Need I say more? They didn't need to start whining about how oppressive Christianity is either. Shit, if yer gonna start whining about religion, get a little creative, like Type O's Christian Woman. :)
*****FATES WARNING*****
After joking with the underage side-of-stage crowd about how their fuckin' keyboard player got everybody sick, Ray Alder and company hit the stage.
They opened their set with A Pleasant Shade of Gray, ended with stuff from No Exit and other songs from CDs I don't yet own, and a cover of Armoured Saint that just rocked too hard!
I was standing behind the keyboard player (dude from Divine Regal, forgot his name) whose fingers were just FLYING all over the place, and was just impressed with how tight this band was. Zonder was the same beast on the drums he was last time, Ray hit his lines beautifully, Joey was the bad ass bass player I remembered him as (looked like he was growin' his hair out), and Matheos' guitar work was perfect.
I know I don't need to say it here, but these guys deserve a show in a place far far better than that shithole dive Mason Jar. Something more like Sun Devil Stadium. }:)
